#Opening Vignette — Those Who Changed Their Names

Five people gathered in the dojo yard, each giving a different name. A hatamoto retainer, a wandering monk, a craftsmen's guild repairman, an interpreter from Nagasaki, a pleasure-quarter musician. The inspector heard those names and still did not open the sealed letter.

"In Edo, affiliation comes before name." He said. "So I'll ask again. Whose people are you?"

The hatamoto retainer smiled. "We belong to whoever needs a sword."

The wandering monk gripped his prayer beads. "We are those who block the road the dead travel back upon."

The repairman drew a small gear from his sleeve. "If a door is broken, I fix it — and if it cannot be fixed, I break it."

The interpreter bowed his head. "In Nagasaki, words draw blood before swords do."

The pleasure-quarter musician plucked a shamisen string once. "I know the songs people try to keep hidden to the very end."

Only then did the inspector unfold the sealed letter. Inside the paper there was no name of a dojo master, no riverside warehouse, no sealed well. Instead, a single sentence was written: The base class does not change. Only the name the era uses to call that class changes.

"Good." The inspector said. "From today, move under those names."

In the Warring States era they would have gathered under a battalion's banner. In Edo, household registries, affiliations, licenses, performance schedules, and transaction ledgers introduce them instead. This chapter does not prohibit any class. It reads the face that the era of Edo places upon each class.

#Scent — A New Name Tag

Even the same class is called by a different name once it enters Edo. The battlefield commander becomes an inspector's retainer, the mountain exorcist becomes a highway guide, and the yoma bloodline lives hidden among the household registries.

#Law — Character Application

  • Do not change the stats and traits of the core 18 classes.
  • Each class is given an official face, a hidden face, and access authority for entering incidents.
  • Party affiliation provides commissions and constraints rather than combat bonuses.
