#1. Map of Faith — The Spiritual World of the Sengoku
#Scent
Sengoku Japan is not a world ruled by a single religion. Shinbutsu-shugo (神佛習合), the syncretism of kami and buddhas: the kami of Shinto (神道) and the buddhas of Buddhism are enshrined in the same temples, divination from Onmyodo (陰陽道) determines the day a warrior marches, and the loyalty and filial piety of Confucianism (儒教) grip the sheath of a samurai's blade.
In Konsei Reiyotan, one more fact is added: yoma's existence proves faith empirically. Kami truly exist, Buddhist sutras truly repel yoma, and Daoist talismans truly create barriers. "Do gods exist?" is not the question. The question is "which god will you follow?"
#Law — 5 Major Faith Systems
| Faith | Root | Three Ways Link | Core Function | Related Factions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shinto (神道) | native Japan | Way of Mystery (玄道) | Faith, barriers, exorcism | Muhyeon Band, wildlanders |
| Buddhism (佛教) | India→China→Japan | Way of Emptiness (空道) | exorcism, sutras, barriers | Hiei League, Ikko-ikki |
| Onmyodo (陰陽道) | Chinese Daoism+Japanese native practice | Mystery/Emptiness | curses, shikigami, divination | Enryokan, Tsuchimikado |
| Confucianism (儒教) | Chinese learning | Way of Rites (禮道) | no direct function. Ethical system. | Kagura Domain, scholars |
| Kirishitan (吉利支丹) | European Christianity | independent system | Faith (variant), healing | foreigners, Saikai region |
#2. Shinto (神道) — The Way of Kami
#Scent
Kami (神) dwell in all things: mountains, stones, trees, rivers, even old blades. Humans coexist with kami and perform rites (祭) to avoid their anger.
In the Sengoku period, Shinto is not a purely ceremonial religion. The appearance of yoma makes the existence of kami a physical reality. Tengu are messengers of mountain kami, kappa are river spirits, and Ryugu messengers are divinities of the seabed. From a Shinto perspective, yoma extermination is either "the price of disrespect toward kami" or "a trial from kami."
#Core Concepts
| Concept | Meaning | Game Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Kamuy (神威) | the awe and power of kami revered by Emishi/wildlanders | Wildlander kamuy faith, Way of Mystery conflict, source of northern sacred objects. |
| Kegare (穢) | impurity (不淨). Death, blood, yoma taint. | Shinto interpretation of the Spiritual Taint condition. |
| Harae (祓) | purification rite. Washes away kegare. | Shinto form of exorcism/barrier checks. |
| Yorishiro (依代) | medium in which a kami dwells (sacred tree, stone, human). | An arahitogami is a yorishiro for a kami. |
| Aramitama/Nigimitama | rough aspect/gentle aspect of a kami | The same kami is calamity as aramitama and blessing as nigimitama. Cause of yoma transformation? |
#Shinto and Game Rules
- The Faith resource of the arahitogami class is rooted in Shinto. The belief that they are revered as a living god is itself the source of power.
- Wildlander (Emishi) kamuy faith is a prototype of Shinto. Are "Ainu kamuy" and "Yamato kami" the same or different? This can be a campaign theme.
- Sacred ground = manifestation of a kami. Fear immunity and prevention of Cohesion collapse within the zone. The kami protects that land.
- Kegare: Spiritual Taint is interpreted in Shinto as "impurity." Harae (purification) is the Shinto expression of exorcism.
#Representative Kami and Impact
| Kami | Domain | Game Impact | Related NPC/Faction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amaterasu (天照) | sun, imperial line | legitimacy of the emperor. Light-aspect barriers. | imperial court (朝廷) |
| Hachiman (八幡) | war, martial skill | guardian deity of warriors. Prayer before battle → first-breath Energy+1. | Kagura Domain |
| Inari (稻荷) | abundance, foxes | kami of an arahitogami miko. Ambiguous relationship with yoko. | arahitogami, Biu Mountain |

| Sojobo (僧正坊) | king of tengu | leader of Muhyeon Band. God, or yoma? | Muhyeon Band |
#3. Buddhism (佛教) — Path of Liberation and Exorcism
#Scent
Buddhism in the Sengoku period is not a religion of pure meditation. Warrior monks of Mount Hiei take up naginata and cut down yoma. Farmers of the Ikko-ikki shout "Namu Amida Butsu" and take up blades. Esoteric Buddhist monks seal yoma with mantras and mudra (印), while Pure Land monks raise squad morale through the power of sutras.
Buddhism is also a political power of the Sengoku period. Hiei League is a religious power with military force, and the Ikko-ikki is a fanatical popular uprising of Jodo Shinshu.
#Sects and Game Impact
| Sect | Traits | Game Impact | Related Class/Faction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tendai (天台宗) | Mount Hiei. Fusion of esoteric and exoteric Buddhism. Comprehensive Buddhism. | Ideological base of Hiei League. Combat Buddhism of warrior monks. | esoteric monk, Hiei League |
| Shingon (眞言宗) | Esoteric Buddhism. Mantra+mudra+mandala. | Root of Shingon Exorcism-ryu. Sweeps away yoma with the power of Dainichi Nyorai. | esoteric monk, Shingon Exorcism-ryu |
| Pure Land/Jodo Shinshu | Amida Buddha faith. Rebirth in paradise through a single "Namu Amida Butsu." | Sutra abilities of Pure Land monks. Ikko-ikki fanaticism. | Pure Land monk, Ikko-ikki |

| Shugendo (修驗道) | mountain asceticism. Extreme form of shinbutsu-shugo. | Shugenja class. Spiritual base of austerity. | shugenja, Shugendo-ryu |
#Core Buddhist Concepts
| Concept | Meaning | Game Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Karma (業, karma) | accumulated actions decide the next life | Buddhist interpretation of Three Ways and Six Hearts shifts. A change in Heart = accumulation of karma. |
| Form Is Emptiness (色卽是空) | form is emptiness. | Doctrinal basis for physical negation against non-corporeal yoma. "Because there is no form, the blade does not work." |
| Bodhisattva Practice (菩薩行) | saving others before oneself | Doctrinal root of Pure Land monk healing/support traits. |
| Goma (護摩) | esoteric fire ritual | Holy Fire zones of Shugendo-ryu. Spiritual fire, not physical fire. |
| Mandala (曼陀羅) | diagrammatic expression of the cosmos | Buddhist form of barriers. Drawing a mandala creates a barrier. |
#4. Onmyodo (陰陽道) — The Principles of All Things
#Scent
Onmyodo is an independent system combining Chinese Daoism, yin-yang five-phase theory, and Japanese native magic. Onmyoji command shikigami, read the stars, cast curses, and create barriers. Descendants of Abe no Seimei divine the fate of the state beside the emperor, and the Tsuchimikado house observes the heavens to predict yoma appearances.
Onmyodo is closer to technology than "religion." Not faith, but principle (理法): a discipline for understanding and manipulating how the world works. An onmyoji can therefore "use it without believing." Yet when they reach the end of those principles, when they touch the world's secrets, the boundary between "god" and "human" blurs.
#Five Phases and the Game
| Element | Generation | Overcoming | Game Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood (木) | water→wood | wood→earth | east, spring, healing. Herbs/medicine. |
| Fire (火) | wood→fire | fire→metal | south, summer, destruction. Fire attacks/goma. |
| Earth (土) | fire→earth | earth→water | center, seasonal change, stability. Barriers/walls. |
| Metal (金) | earth→metal | metal→wood | west, autumn, weapons. Blades/armor. |
| Water (水) | metal→water | water→fire | north, winter, concealment. Ninjutsu/curses. |
Optional Rule — Five-Phase Compatibility: If the GM wants, when a yoma's element (five phases) and an attack's element are in an overcoming relation, apply +2; when in a generating relation, apply -2. Example: attacking metal (metal yoma) with fire (goma) gives +2.
#Core Onmyodo Concepts
| Concept | Meaning | Game Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Shikigami (式神) | familiar with a soul breathed into paper/a doll | Core technique of onmyoji. Great shikigami art of Abe-ryu. |
| Array (陣) | ritual formation imitating the arrangement of stars | Onmyodo form of barriers. Five-direction array = 5-point barrier. |
| Astronomy (天文) | reading the stars to predict the future | Tsuchimikado-ryu secret art: astral observation (reveals enemy actions). |
| Curse (呪詛) | magic that sends calamity to a target | Tsuchimikado-ryu licensed maneuver. Dark Onmyodo. |
| Ley Line (靈脈) | flow of spiritual energy through the earth | Core of feng shui masters. Ley-line activation/taint becomes a battlefield gimmick. |
#5. Confucianism (儒教) — Human Principle
#Scent
Confucianism is an ethical system more than a "religion." No kami, no buddhas; only the principle (道理) between humans. Loyalty (忠), filial piety (孝), benevolence (仁), righteousness (義), rites (禮). A samurai's blade is governed by Confucian ethics.
In the Sengoku period, Confucianism lives as bushido (武士道). Loyalty to one's lord, filial duty to one's house, righteousness toward enemies, benevolence toward the weak. These four pillars make a samurai a samurai.
But Sengoku chaos shakes the order of Confucianism. "What if the lord is foolish?" "What if the enemy is righteous?" "What if loyalty and benevolence collide?" These questions shake the Way of Rites (禮道) between Loyalty and Hegemony.
#The 7 Virtues of Bushido and the Game
| Virtue | Kanji | Meaning | Game Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Righteousness (義) | 義 | what is right | Criterion for Three Ways and Six Hearts judgment. "Is this the right thing?" |
| Courage (勇) | 勇 | courage | Courage (勇) ability. Fear resistance. Breakthrough checks. |
| Benevolence (仁) | 仁 | compassion | Possible shift from Loyalty to Compassion. "Mercy toward the enemy." |
| Rites (禮) | 禮 | courtesy | Basis of negotiation checks. Status system. |
| Sincerity (誠) | 誠 | truth | Ethical standard for detecting lies. |
| Honor (名譽) | 名譽 | honor | Fame system. Honorable action = Fame+. |
| Loyalty (忠) | 忠 | loyalty | Bright heart of the Way of Rites in Three Ways and Six Hearts. Itself. |
#6. Kirishitan (吉利支丹) — The God Across the Sea
#Scent
In 1549, Francisco Xavier arrived in Satsuma. What he brought was not only teppo (鐵砲), but the word of Deus (天主).
Kirishitan (切支丹): Christianity. A foreign religion first brought to Sengoku Japan. The idea of "one God" was revolutionary in a land where eight million kami and countless buddhas coexist. "Kami and buddhas are false. There is only one true God." Some were moved by this declaration, and some were enraged.
Some daimyo in Kyushu (九州) converted. Kirishitan daimyo. In their domains, temples were burned and crosses were raised. Hiei League warned that this was "heresy among heresies," while Enryokan saw it as "one more subject for coexistence."
In Konsei Reiyotan, Kirishitan occupy a special position. Does prayer to Deus repel yoma? It does. Just as sutras work on yoma, prayer works as well. Does this mean "all faiths have equal power," or does it mean "there is one true God and all else is illusion"?
#Law — Kirishitan Rules
Kirishitan Faith: characters with the foreigner class or a Kirishitan background may choose this.
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Three Ways and Six Hearts | Kirishitan do not belong to the Three Ways. Treat them as an independent system, the "Way of the Heavenly Lord (天主道)." Bright heart: Faith (信), believing in and following one God. Dark heart: Madness (狂), falling into fanaticism and denying everything else. |
| Exorcism Effect | Prayer (oratio) can be used for exorcism checks. 2d10+Presence+Exorcism (Kirishitan only). Equivalent to Buddhist exorcism. |
| Healing | "Laying on of Hands (按手)": restore 1 Wound through prayer (1 time per lull). No medicine skill required. |
| Cross | Holy object. Grants fear immunity while carried (self only). Negotiation with yoma -3 (yoma dislike it). |
| Social Cost | In Hiei League/Ikko-ikki territory, negotiation -3 (heresy). In Sakai Guild, negotiation +1 (foreign merchants welcome). In Kagura Domain, -1 (suspicion toward foreign thought). |
#Kirishitan NPCs
| NPC | Role | Three Ways and Six Hearts |
|---|---|---|
| Padre Rodrigues | Missionary. Saikai base. Performs healing and conversion work. | Faith (信) |
| Arima Jintaro | Child of a Kirishitan daimyo. Both warrior and believer. | conflict between Faith (信)↔Loyalty |
| Isabella | Kirishitan nun. Foreigner. Medicine and prayer. May be an old companion of Maria. | Faith (信)/Compassion |
#7. Heresies and Minority Sects — Forbidden Teachings
#Scent
Teachings that depart from orthodox doctrine: dark Buddhism, cults (邪教), forbidden Onmyodo. These are not "formal schools," but "teachings whispered underground." Hiei League suppresses them, Kagura Domain forbids them, and the court declares them heretical.
Yet heretical teachings are sometimes stronger than orthodoxy. The forbidden is forbidden for a reason, and often that reason is "too dangerous."
#Law — Heretical Traits (Variant Traits)
Heretical/minority sect traits replace traits from an existing class. The acquisition cost is the same (1 trait slot). However, there is a social cost.
Common Rule for Heretical Traits: If use of a heretical trait is discovered, Fame with that faction -3. In Hiei League/Ikko-ikki territory, the character is subject to arrest/execution.
#Esoteric Monk Heresy: Outer Path Esoterica (外道密教)
Orthodox esoteric Buddhism teaches "exorcism for the sake of compassion." Outer Path Esoterica teaches "exorcism that uses the power of yoma." It does not seal yoma; it absorbs yoma energy to strengthen the user.
| Before Replacement | After Replacement (Heresy) | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond Body (3rd-dan aptitude) | Absorb Demon (吸魔) | When dealing Wound damage to a yoma, recover your own Wounds by half the damage (round up). | Each use, d100: on 01~10, "yoma encroachment"; during the next round you are also treated as yoma (weak to exorcism). |
| Lotus Seat (5th-dan upkeep) | Dead Spirit Absorption (死靈吸收) | During a lull, absorb the remaining energy of 1 incapacitated yoma in the zone. Recover 2 Wounds + Energy +2 (next round). | The absorbed yoma's memories appear in dreams. After 3 or more uses, the GM triggers a "yoma personality encroachment" event. |
Three Ways and Six Hearts: learning Outer Path Esoterica pulls the character from the Way of Emptiness (空道) toward the Way of Mystery (玄道). They move closer to Demon.
#Pure Land Monk Heresy: Akunin Shoki (惡人正機)
Orthodox Pure Land teaching interprets "if good people attain rebirth, evil people do even more so" as compassion. The heretical Akunin Shoki sect interprets it in the extreme as "evil deeds are also part of salvation." "Amida Buddha made vows for evil people, so evil itself becomes prayer."
| Before Replacement | After Replacement (Heresy) | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amida's Shield (1st-dan aptitude) | Sutra of the Evil | Ally healing/Cohesion recovery effects can also be applied to enemies. You can restore the Wounds of 1 enemy. Instead, each time you heal an enemy, all allies gain Cohesion +1 (strange morale surge). | Allies become confused. "Why are you treating the enemy?" |
| Great Dharma Assembly (5th-dan Kata) | Infinite Light (無量光) | 5 Energy, 1 time per battle. Everyone on the battlefield (friend or foe) recovers 2 Wounds + removes fear + Cohesion +2. "Amida's light does not distinguish enemy from ally." | Allies may protest healing enemies. Three Ways and Six Hearts: conflict with Loyalty/Hegemony characters. |
Three Ways and Six Hearts: the extreme of the Way of Emptiness. Danger of crossing from Compassion into Void. "If all things are equal, is there a reason to fight?"
#Onmyoji Heresy: Kido (鬼道)
The dark branch of Onmyodo. Forbidden magic that goes beyond commanding shikigami and manipulates human souls. Recorded in "forbidden books (禁書)" sealed by the Tsuchimikado house.
| Before Replacement | After Replacement (Heresy) | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shikigami Command (1st-dan aptitude) | Hitogata (人形, human effigy) | Command human souls instead of shikigami. Seal the soul of an incapacitated enemy/ally into a paper doll. Use it as a minion-grade unit (Wounds 1, original weapon techniques usable). | Soul command causes an immediate 1-step shift toward Demon in Three Ways and Six Hearts. If the original owner of the commanded soul is alive, permanent enmity with that NPC. |
| Curse (Tsuchimikado license) | Ikiryo (生靈) | 3 Energy, 1 time per round. Separate the ikiryo of 1 target (the grudge of a living person). Target Wounds -2 + ikiryo appears as a minion-grade unit (Wounds 1, grudge attack: [Incorporeal], 1 Wound. Apply §Exorcism Exemption Table). | Separating an ikiryo shortens the target's lifespan (narrative effect). Using it on a noncombat NPC creates scenario catastrophe. |
Three Ways and Six Hearts: learning Kido locks the character in the Demon Heart. They cannot shift to another Heart without a release event.
#Arahitogami Heresy: Yomotsu-gami (黃泉神)
Orthodox arahitogami teach that "aramitama is also part of kami." The Yomotsu-gami variant worships kami of Yomi (黃泉, the world of death). Children of Izanami. It borrows the power of kami that rule death.
| Before Replacement | After Replacement (Heresy) | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manifest Divine Authority (1st-dan stance) | Yomi Manifestation | Sacred ground forms as normal. Additional effect: incapacitated units inside the sacred ground (friend or foe) revive as minion-grade undead (Wounds 1, lasts 1 round). | Faith cost is 2 times normal. Revived undead are uncontrollable (attack the nearest living unit). |
| Light of Healing (5th-dan Kata) | Life Drain (吸命) | 3 Energy, 1 time per round. Absorb 2 Wounds from 1 target → your Wounds +2 + Faith +1 recovered. | Can be used on allies (consent required). If used on a non-consenting target, Three Ways and Six Hearts shifts to Demon. |
Three Ways and Six Hearts: Yomotsu-gami is the extreme of the Way of Mystery. The shift from Truth (眞) to Demon (魔) is natural. "Death too is part of nature."
#8. Cult Rules (邪教/Cult Rules)
#Scent
In Sengoku chaos, cults (邪教) grow beneath the shadow of orthodox religions: fanatics who worship yoma as gods, apocalyptic believers trying to open the Gate to the Spirit Realm, alchemists trying to transform humans into yoma. A cult can be used as an NPC faction or as a corrupted path for players.
#Law — Cult Structure
4 Elements of a Cult:
| Element | Description | Game Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cult Leader (敎主) | Center of the cult. Charismatic leader. | Elite~Lord-grade NPC. Has unique heretical techniques. |
| Doctrine (敎理) | Teaching believed by the cult. | Distorted interpretation of Three Ways and Six Hearts. Shinto fanatics follow. |
| Ritual (儀式) | Secret ritual of the cult. | Pre-combat buffs, summoning, mutation, etc. Scenario objective. |
| Followers (追從者) | Fanatic squads. | Minion/veteran squads. Special: no Cohesion collapse (fanaticism). Instead, all self-harm when the leader is incapacitated. |
#Special Rules for Cult Squads
| Rule | Effect |
|---|---|
| Fanaticism (狂信) | Cohesion fixed at 5. Does not decrease. Instead, when the cult leader is incapacitated, everyone self-harms (Wounds 0). |
| Self-Detonation (自爆) | A minion squad charges an enemy and detonates. Everyone in the same zone takes 1 Wound. The squad is destroyed. |
| Ignore Taboos | Perform acts forbidden by normal schools/classes (poisoning, human sacrifice, etc.) without restriction. |
| Yoma Offering | Ritual summons/strengthens yoma. During a lull, the leader performs a ritual (3 Energy) → 1 yoma gains Wounds +2, or 1~3 minions are summoned (GM decision). |
#3 Representative Cults
#Cult 1: Hannyakai (般若會)
"Only by becoming an oni can you defeat oni."
An extreme ideology that humans should transform themselves into yoma to fight yoma. A radical faction of Hannya Altar.
| Item | Content |
|---|---|
| Cult Leader | "Hannya Shrine Maiden." Name unknown. A woman wearing a Hannya mask. Veteran~elite grade. |
| Doctrine | To surpass human limits, one must accept yoma power. Yoma transformation is evolution. |
| Ritual | "Hannya Mutation": ritual participants swallow a yoma core and become hanyo. Success rate 20%. On failure, death or yoma transformation (turns enemy). |
| Followers | Hannya fanatics (minion squad). Fanaticism rules apply. Some are successful hanyo transformations (veteran, Wounds 2+1 yoma technique). |
| Scenario Hook | "People keep disappearing from the village. Screams come from underground." The Hannyakai's mutation ritual. |
#Cult 2: Spirit Gate Sect (靈門敎)
"If we open the Gate to the Spirit Realm, the dead will return."
An apocalyptic cult that intentionally opens the Gate to the Spirit Realm to call the dead (souls) back to the present world.
| Item | Content |
|---|---|
| Cult Leader | "Gatekeeper." Name unknown. Former onmyoji. Lord-grade. User of Kido (heretical Onmyodo). |
| Doctrine | The boundary between the Spirit Realm and the present world is artificial. If the boundary is broken, all the dead will return and the world will become eternal. |
| Ritual | "Spirit Realm Opening": d10-hour ritual on a ley line → Spirit Realm fissure forms. Konryu fragments appear. Final goal: fully open the Gate to the Spirit Realm. |
| Followers | Spirit Gate believers (minion squad). Reappear after death as onryo (when incapacitated, revive after 1 round as onryo (minion)). |
| Scenario Hook | "Strange sutras are heard from a temple on a ley line. The Spirit Realm fissure is widening." |
#Cult 3: Heavenly Lord Mad Order (天主狂團)
"Deus alone is the true God. Kami and buddhas are all devils."
A radical Kirishitan faction. Unlike ordinary Kirishitan, who seek "coexistence," the Heavenly Lord Mad Order denies and tries to destroy every other faith. They burn temples, break shrines, and execute monks.
| Item | Content |
|---|---|
| Cult Leader | "Judge Gaspar." Foreign cleric. Elite grade. Kirishitan exorcism + madness. |
| Doctrine | "Kami and buddhas are disguises of devils (demons). Yoma prove it. All must be purified by the judgment of Deus." |
| Ritual | "Heretical Interrogation": interrogation ritual on a prisoner/NPC. Presence >= 13 opposed. On failure, "forced confession" → gain the NPC's secret information. However, the target suffers mental damage (Wounds -1 permanent). |
| Followers | Heavenly Lord zealots (minion squad). Crosses equipped. Fear immunity (fanaticism). Specialized in fire attacks (burning heretical temples). |
| Scenario Hook | "A mountain temple in Kii (紀伊) is burning. An armed group led by a foreigner cries 'judgment of God' and destroys the temple." |
#9. Crossing Faith and the Three Ways and Six Hearts
#Moments When Faith Changes the Heart
| Event | Three Ways and Six Hearts Change | Scenario Hook |
|---|---|---|
| Kirishitan conversion | shift from existing Way (道) to Way of the Heavenly Lord (天主道) | "The teachings of Deus shook my heart." |
| Learn a heretical technique | move 1 step toward Demon | "Touch forbidden power and you cannot return." |
| Join a cult | Heart fixed. Cannot shift. | "Once fanaticism takes hold, doubt disappears." |
| Leave a cult | reset Three Ways and Six Hearts (to No Heart) | "Begin again from a place where everything is doubted." |
| Crisis of faith | 1 step toward the opposite side of the current Heart | "I believed in Buddha's compassion, but Buddha was silent." |
| Heresy purification (exorcism ritual) | return 1 step from Demon | "As sutras wash away darkness, the heart is washed clean." |
Is god (神) one, or eight million? The answer depends on the heart of the one who takes up the blade.
