#3 Fortune Training Methods
Contents
⚠ Not a school. Presupposes Master (4 points) or above in Fortune (天運, mapped to Fate).
#§ Scent — What Fortune Cultivation Is
Fate is something given from outside. But the same Fate can be received differently — some let good Fate slip away, and some turn small luck into a great result. Fortune cultivation is refining the very self that receives Fate.
#§ Law — The 3 Training Methods
#20-07-01. Mastery of the I Ching (周易通達) — Self-Taught Cultivation · Universal
Cultural origin: the deep mastery of the I Ching (周易). Separate from the 19-05-01 Yin-Yang Divination school — the self-cultivation of the depth of the I Ching.
Approach: Fortune Master + a scholar profession or 5 or more sessions of I Ching study.
Main effect [aptitude] — Intuition of the I Ching:
- 1 time per 1 session, you may reroll 1 die on a Fate check.
- Backlash: the next Fate check within the same session -1 (balance of Fate).
Achievement narrative: the PC becomes "one who has seen the flow of Fate." But take care not to rely too much on your own Fate.
#20-07-02. Orthodox Astrology (占星術正統) — Foreign Training · Arab · Europe
Cultural origin: the astrology of the Arab world · Europe. Analyzing destiny by the positions of constellations · planets. Deep learning + mysticism.
Approach: Fortune Master + Arab or European origin + learning from a scholar + astronomical tools (40-02-03 a quadrant, etc.) recommended.
Main effect [aptitude] — Intuition of the Constellations:
- At the start of 1 session, the GM reveals to the PC 1 line of "today's constellation" (narrative hint).
- 1 time per 1 session, Fate check +2 (when the constellation matches).
- When the constellation does not match, Fate check -1 (trap of mysticism).
Achievement narrative: the PC becomes "one who receives the guidance of the constellations." But there is a risk of depending on the constellations.
#20-07-03. North American Indigenous Vision Quest (Hanblecheyapi) — Foreign Training · North America
- Source: the Lakota · Dakota peoples (Sioux tribes) — the Hanblecheyapi rite
- Period: the tradition dates from several centuries earlier, still active in the late 16th century
- Cultural sphere: North American plains tribes
Route of arrival: arriving by Manila galleon via the Spanish colony of Nueva España.
Cultural origin: the vision quest (Hanblecheyapi) of the Lakota · Dakota (Sioux tribes). Fasting in the mountains + a spiritual vision. Discovery of one's own guardian spirit.
Approach: Fortune Master + New World origin or Foreign Adaptation (free) + a 1st vision quest (scenario event).
Main effect [aptitude] — Companionship of the Guardian Spirit:
- In a crisis situation (reaching Exhaustion or Energy 0), 1 time Energy aid B-2 (1 additional Energy action from a 0 count — the guardian spirit's last beat).
- Used 1 time per 1 session. After use, one-breath limit -1 for the next 1 session (backlash).
- Activated only after the vision quest rite.
Achievement narrative: the PC becomes "one who walks together with a guardian spirit." Branching to the Renown Title "Companion of the Indigenous Soul" becomes possible. Almost imaginary media.
#§ Design Perspective
- 3 training-method types: Self-Taught Cultivation + Foreign Training 2.
- Diversity of ideas: I Ching (East) · astrology (West · Arab) · vision (New World) — 3 different ideas of Fate.
- Benefit + cost: all are limited to 1 time per 1 session + a backlash.
- GM tool: all 3 training methods are narrative-hint · decision tools for the GM.
"Fate takes a different shape depending on the one who receives it. So the same luck produces a different result."
