#What It Means to Fall into the Way of Evil

Contents

The way of evil begins not from "I did a bad thing" but from "the words to explain a bad thing grew steadily easier."

#Introductory Fragment — The First Excuse

"Just this once."

When he first said so, everyone believed him. The situation was urgent, the enemy was cruel, and the options were few. Forcing open and looking into the prisoner's memory was horrific, but the castle gate was held.

The second time he said, "There is no other way."

The third time he said, "Look at the result."

The fourth time no one asked, and he did not explain. The prisoner became not a name but information, information became a tool, and a tool became a thing that wears down with use.

That night, he did not become a demon. He only found it a little more bothersome to see a person as a person.

#The Four Stages of the Way of Evil

StageQuestionScene signal
WoundWhat shook this person?A person lost, a salvation that failed, a cause that was betrayed.
ExcuseWith what words did he cross the first taboo?"Just this once," "for the great cause," "to end the suffering."
RepetitionHow did the same choice grow easier? The scenes grow shorter and the explanations fewer.
IdentificationWhat does he now call himself?A fiend name, a cult name, a byname of fear, the discarding of the old name.

This structure is not a rule stage. It is a frame for reading scenes.

#The Way of Evil Is Wider than Taboo

Crossing a taboo once does not mean everyone falls into the way of evil. Conversely, one can draw near the way of evil even without crossing a great taboo.

What matters is repetition and desensitization.

  • At first there is guilt.
  • Next there is a reason.
  • After that there is efficiency.
  • At last it becomes a taste.

When this change becomes visible, the way of evil becomes the center of the session.

#The Twisting of a Bright Heart

The way of evil often begins from the opposite side of a bright heart.

BeginningTwisting
LoyaltyThe command becomes more important than people.
CompassionWith the words of erasing suffering, the suffering person is erased.
Reverence for natureChoosing only the cruelty of nature, human ethics are discarded.
Non-attachmentIt becomes a license to take responsibility for no relationship.
The pursuit of knowledgePeople become cases and materials.
ArtIt demands blood for the sake of beauty.
BargainIt cannot understand what cannot be priced.

So a fiend NPC is strong when he is "a person one could once understand" rather than "a monster from the start."

#The Way of Evil and Power

The way of evil can grant power. The fiend classes of co show that fact in data. But what matters in this volume is not the price of power but the interpretation of power.

The Shurado is not a warrior grown strong. He is a man for whom, even when the war ends, nothing but war remains.

The Dokuchushi is not an assassin skilled with poison. He is one who sees the inside of another's body as his own workshop.

The Kaibutsu is not a holy defender. It is the shadow of a buddha that forces upon the whole world the fact that it cannot move.

The way of evil lies less in the name of the ability than in the way one sees the world with that ability.

#The Conditions of Stopping

For a story of corruption to be strong, there must be a moment when one can stop.

A good halting scene:

  • A former comrade makes a different choice with the same words.
  • The victim speaks a name.
  • The one the fiend PC tried to protect fears him.
  • It comes to light that the villain faction's victory differs from the first goal.
  • Descend further and you gain power, but one name to return to vanishes.

Stopping does not mean it must succeed. It may fail. Only the fact that it failed must be visible.

#GM Principles

When treating the way of evil, the GM keeps three things.

  • Room for choice: Let the player choose the dark side of his own character.
  • The presence of a mirror: Place a person who gives a different answer to the same question.
  • The persistence of traces: Let the choice remain in the world of the next scene.

The way of evil is not a sudden brand. It is a road built up from accumulated scenes.

Corruption is closer to a staircase than to a cliff — descend one step at a time, and you do not notice that you have descended.
