#Scent — The Mountain Road of Red Horns

The mountain road narrowed. Woods blocked both sides. Through the mist, shapes appeared — one, two, five. Behind them stood a shape of a different size. Twice the height of a human. Horns rose above the fog.

"I will hold." Genzaburo drew his blade. He stepped forward and lowered his stance. On this narrow road, he would not give ground.

Kuro nodded and vanished toward the trees. Enku gripped his uchigatana and walked straight ahead.

The ko-oni charged. Genzaburo lowered his stance, and the narrow road closed behind the point of a single sword. Enku leapt into their formation and swung, but the ko-oni braced their clubs together and held.

Akamaru's kanabo came down. Enku caught it with his sword, but was driven back. His arm went numb. Still, he did not fall.

Kuro appeared from the woods. He had circled behind the enemy and drove his blade into Akamaru's flank. As the oni turned, Genzaburo released his stance and charged into the enemy line.

Genzaburo's Horizontal Cut was followed by Kuro's ninjato driving in again. Akamaru dropped to one knee.

The ko-oni held their clubs for a while after losing their leader. Then their formation wavered, and at last they scattered in every direction.

No one died. This time.

Enku1010 (tie: allies first)

#Count 12 — Kuro (PC)

Kuro: "Kuro (PC) moves to the Flank Zone. 2 Energy. Going to strike from behind later."

Walk (ally Front Zone→Flank Zone): 2 Energy. Remaining: 12→10

#Count 11 — Genzaburo

Hana: "Declare Immovable Formation! And reserve a parry!"

Kuro: "Immovable Formation (2) + parry reserve (1) = 3. Within the basic limit 5. Domination: Genzaburo (+1.5, Commander-grade) + Enku (+1.5, Commander-grade, same zone) + Immovable Formation (+4, Front Zone) = 7. Enemy Front Zone Domination is Akamaru (+4, Elite) + ko-oni squad (+2) = 6. Allies 7 vs enemy 6, so the allies have advantage. To break through the allied Front Zone, the enemy uses the base Target Number 13 plus +2 from Immovable Formation, for 15."

Immovable Formation (2) + parry reserve (1) = 3. Remaining: 11→8

#Count 10 — Enku (tie: allies first)

Hana: "Enku breaks through into the enemy front!"

Kuro: "The enemy completely controls that Front Zone, so Breakthrough costs 3 Energy. 2d10 + Courage(+1) >= 13."

Hana: "[6,7]+Courage(+1) = 14. Success! He cuts at a ko-oni with Horizontal Cut. 2 Energy."

Hana: "The Horizontal Cut check is [5,4]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+0) = 10. ...Miss! Short of Defense 11 by 1."

Breakthrough (3) + Horizontal Cut (2, miss) = 5 [limit]. Remaining: 10→5

#Count 10 — Akamaru

Kuro: "Akamaru uses Kanabo Smash(monster technique, 3) on Enku. [8,3]+Courage(+3) = 14 >= Defense 10. Hit! Wounds 5→4. Then he gives a squad command (2) to the ko-oni. Their volley attack has no modifier: [2,3]=5. Miss."

Smash (3) + squad command (2) = 5. Remaining: 10→5

Remaining: 12→8

Mei: "So ambush was that strong..."

#Count 11 — Genzaburo

Hana: "Release Immovable Formation (0). Break through into the enemy front!"

Breakthrough (3): [7,5]+Courage(+2) = 14 >= 11. Success! Horizontal Cut (2): [9,4]+Courage(+2)+Swordsmanship(+1) = 16 >= 14. Hit!

Kuro: "Akamaru is defeated. The ko-oni squad loses its commander and drops from Cohesion 3→2. Starting next round, it rolls on the leaderless frenzy table at count 1."

#Scent — The Oni at the Gate

Genzaburo stood before the gate. Five spearmen raised their spears behind him. From a high place, Sosui held his fan and looked down on the battlefield.

Ibaraki-doji came. Alone. No followers.

"Set spears." At Genzaburo's order, five spears barred the gate.

Sosui's fan fell. "Loose." Archer arrows struck the oni's shoulder, but Ibaraki-doji only frowned.

Genzaburo lifted his sword high. He wagered everything on a single blow. He brought it down with all his strength. The blade grazed Ibaraki-doji's arm. Blood scattered. But Genzaburo's body swayed. He had pushed too hard. His sight blurred and the strength left his arm.

Sosui folded his fan and opened it again. He nodded toward Genzaburo. That single nod filled Genzaburo's body with strength, as if he had taken one more breath.

Genzaburo raised his sword again.

The gate was held. Not by strength, but by judgment.

#Count 12 — Ibaraki-doji (moves first!)

Kuro: "Ibaraki-doji has Energy 12. Genzaburo has 11. The enemy goes first."

Breakthrough (3): [6,5]+Courage(+4) = 15 >= 11. Enters the allied Front Zone!
Kanabo Smash(monster technique, 3): [7,4]+Courage(+4) = 15 >= 14. Hit! Genzaburo Wounds: 5→4
Breath total: 6 → overload! 2d10+0-1 >= 11 → [8,6]-1 = 13. Success!

Remaining: 12→6

#Count 11 — Genzaburo Attempts Overload!

Hana: "Immovable Formation (2) + Horizontal Cut (2) + spear squad command (2) = 6. Over the limit... I attempt overload!"

Overload: 2d10 + Physique (+1)-excess (1) >= 11
→ [5,4]+1-1 = 9. Failure!
→ Actions are still executed. Remaining Energy is all lost + exposed!

Kuro: "Overload failure! Every maneuver is still executed, but all remaining Energy for this round is lost. Exposed (Defense 14→10)."

Spear squad volley attack: [5,6] = 11 < 15. Miss.

Hana: "The horizontal cut landed, but the overload failed... Genzaburo is exposed."

#Count 10 — Sosui (the Scholar's Role)

Mei: "Archer command! Wisdom+3 gives a cost discount, so 1 Energy."

Archer volley: [9,8] = 17 >= 15. Hit! total 17+ → against Elite/Lord targets, 1 Wound+exposed!
Ibaraki-doji Wounds: 4→3. Exposed applied!

Mei: "And Energy Transfer! Spend 2 Energy and give Genzaburo 2 Energy."

Sosui: command (1) + transfer (2) = 3. Remaining: 10→7
Genzaburo: Energy 0 → 2 (restored by transfer!)

Hana: "Genzaburo can act again!?"

Kuro: "That's the Scholar's Energy Transfer. You share your own Energy. Even when overload burns everything out, the Scholar can bring someone back."

#Count 6 — Ibaraki-doji (the Price of Overload Success)

Kuro: "Ibaraki-doji pays the price for overload success: this breath limit is 3."

Kanabo Smash(monster technique, 3): [3,5]+Courage(+4) = 12 >= 10 (exposed). Hit! Genzaburo Wounds: 4→3
Remaining: 6→3

#Scent — The Opening Gate

Beneath the main hall of the abandoned temple, there was a fissure. Cold blue light leaked through the cracked stone floor. The gate to the Spirit Realm.

"What's inside?" Hayame asked.

Renge answered. "One armored onryo. Ten lesser onryo. All non-corporeal. Even when blades reach them, half pass through."

"I don't have Exorcism."

"I know. That is why I came. I will seal it. You buy time."

Kage's voice came from the dark. "I will go first. From behind."

Hayame walked in. He thrust his tanto toward an onryo's body. The blade passed through. It had no substance. The second thrust did the same. Half might strike true, but bad luck could still leave him cutting empty air again and again.

Kage appeared. Behind the onryo warlord, in an instant. His ninjato flashed. This time it did not miss. It sank deep.

The onryo warlord turned and thrust with its spear. Hayame tried to block, but the insubstantial spear pierced through the ninjato. Armor did not matter. Something cold passed through his chest.

Renge entered the main hall. She raised the hand holding her prayer beads. "Namu Amida Butsu." The onryo flinched. Renge walked before the fissure and closed her eyes. The sealing began.

"Buy time." Hayame and Kage stood in front of her.

Three clashes passed. The onryo warlord fell. The onryo vanished. The fissure closed.

The gate closed. The dead returned, and the living remained.

#Law — Session Transcript

Kuro: "Rules check. Non-corporeal: when a physical attack hits, roll d100 once; on 01~50, it is negated (50%). Exorcism Novice (1 point)+ is exempt. [Incorporeal] attack: bypasses Defense itself. With no Exorcism, the attacker still rolls against Target Number 10; Novice (1 point) uses normal Defense -2, Trained (2 points) uses normal Defense -1, and Licensed (3 points)+ uses fully normal Defense. This party does not even have an Exorcism Novice. It faces both the 50% non-corporeal gamble and [Incorporeal] attacks against Target Number 10. A textbook case of a party with no Exorcism meeting spiritual foes."

#Round 1 — Count 12: Kage's Ambush

Kuro: "Kage, Shinobi 1st-dan talent Shadow Crossing: move from the Outside Zone to anywhere as a 0-Energy [Kata]. He enters the Core Zone directly!"

Mei: "Outside Zone→Core Zone move+attack = enhanced ambush. First attack roll +2, and the target cannot use reaction techniques."

Kuro: "With the Shinobi 3rd-dan talent [Ambush], it would be a true automatic Critical Hit (no roll needed), but Kage is 1st dan, so only the enhanced ambush +2 and no-reaction clause apply."

Shadow Crossing (0) + Ninjato Reverse-Grip Cut (1): [9,9]+Courage(+0)+Ninjutsu(+1)+2 (ambush) = 21 >= 15. Hit!
raw [9,9] = double → Critical Hit! Because the weapon is `[Light]`, it deals 1 Wound.
non-corporeal d100 → 80. Valid!
onryo warlord Wounds: 3→2
Remaining: 12→11

#Count 12 — Hayame (Entering the Core Zone)

Free Core Zone entry (2, ronin) + Tanto Thrust (1): [6,8]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+1) = 16 >= 14. Hit!
non-corporeal d100 → 30. 01~50 negated!
Tanto Thrust (1): [7,5]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+1) = 14 >= 14. Hit!
non-corporeal d100 → 20. 01~50 negated!
Hayame breath: 4. Remaining: 12→8

Hana: "Both attacks hit and were negated!? The blade passed through!"

Kuro: "Non-corporeal. Half miss."

Raw Core Zone Domination: Hayame (+1.5)+Kage (+1.5) = 3 vs onryo warlord (+4)+onryo A (+2) = 6. After cancellation, allies 0 vs enemies 3. Enemy advantage.

#Count 8 — Onryo Warlord ([Incorporeal] Attack)

Grudge Spear → Hayame: `[Incorporeal]` attack [6,5]+0 = 11 >= 10. Hayame Wounds: 3→2
onryo A → Kage: `[Incorporeal]` attack [7,4]+0 = 11 >= 10. Kage Wounds: 3→2

Hana: "Armor means nothing?"

Kuro: "It is the [Incorporeal] tag. It bypasses Defense itself. Even 1 point in Exorcism Novice would let you use normal Defense -2, but this party does not have even that. From Licensed (3 points) onward, you use fully normal Defense. In the next PC build, someone should take at least 1 point of Exorcism."

#Round 2 — Warlord Defeated, Core Zone Seizure Begins

#Count 12 — Kage Finishes the Warlord

Ninjato Reverse-Grip Cut (1): [8,6]+Courage(+0)+Ninjutsu(+1) = 15. Hit! d100 → 40. Negated!
Ninjato Reverse-Grip Cut (1): [9,7]+Courage(+0)+Ninjutsu(+1) = 17. Hit! d100 → 70. Valid!
onryo warlord Wounds: 2→1.
Ninjato Reverse-Grip Cut (1): [7,8]+Courage(+0)+Ninjutsu(+1) = 16. Hit! d100 → 90. Valid!
onryo warlord Wounds: 1→0. Combat incapacitated!
Onryo A/B lose their commander and drop from Cohesion 3→2. Starting next round, they roll on the leaderless frenzy table at count 1.

Mei: "3 hits, 2 valid. The non-corporeal roll can swing the battle sharply."

#Count 12 — Hayame Presses Onryo A

Tanto Thrust (1): [5,9]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+1)=16. Hit! d100→60. Valid! Defeats 1 onryo A. 4 bodies.
Tanto Thrust (1): [8,3]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+1)=13. Miss.
Tanto Thrust (1): [6,7]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+1)=15. Hit! d100→20. Negated!
Tanto Thrust (1): [4,8]+Courage(+1)+Swordsmanship(+1)-1(4th-hit fatigue)=13. Miss.

Hana: "4 thrusts, and only 1 mattered..."

Raw Core Zone Domination: allies 3 vs onryo A (4 bodies, +1.6). After cancellation, allies 1.4 vs enemies 0. Ally advantage!

#Count 10 — Renge Enters the Core Zone

Forced Core Zone breakthrough (3): 2d10 + Courage (+0) >= 13 → [8,7] = 15. Success!

Raw Core Zone Domination: allies 4.5 vs enemies 1.6. After cancellation, allies 2.9 vs enemies 0. Seized 1/3 rounds!

#Rounds 3~4 — Maintaining the Seal

Onryo A and B have lost the onryo warlord, so they cannot receive a discretionary Enter Core command. Each rolls on the leaderless frenzy table at count 1 every round.

Round 3: onryo A/B each roll 1d10→7 — hold position.
Onryo A Domination 1.6→0.8(halved). Raw Core Zone values 4.5 vs 0.8 → after cancellation allies 3.7 vs enemies 0. Seized 2/3 rounds.

Round 4: onryo A/B each roll 1d10→7 — hold position.
Raw Core Zone values 4.5 vs 0.8 → after cancellation allies 3.7 vs enemies 0. Seized 3/3 rounds.

Kuro: "Ally Domination advantage for 3 consecutive rounds achieved! The gate to the Spirit Realm closes. Combat ends."

Mei: "So we won by Domination, not by wiping them all out."

Kuro: "The point is not 'kill the enemy.' It is 'seize the zone.'"

#Bonus Demonstrations — 4 Rules

#Demonstration 1 — Reduced Fatigue for Short-Weapon Flurries

Kuro: "In the Core Zone, Combo Fatigue for short weapons (kodachi/tanto/ninjato, etc.) is reduced to -1 instead of -2."

Hayame (ronin, Courage+1, Swordsmanship Trained(+1)): repeatedly attacks a Veteran-grade enemy (Wounds 3, Defense 12) in the Core Zone with Kodachi Flurry(1 Energy).

1st hit (1): total 16. Hit. [3→2]
2nd hit (1): total 14. Hit. [2→1]
3rd hit (1): total 15. Hit. [1→0] Defeated! (no fatigue through the 3rd hit)

If not defeated:
4th hit (1): fatigue -1 (normal -2). total 13-1=12. Defense 12. Hit!
5th hit (1): fatigue -2 (normal -4). total 15-2=13. Defense 12. Hit!
5th hit total = 5 Energy [one-breath limit].

#Demonstration 2 — Forced Charge

Kuro: "Forced Charge costs 5 Energy by default, but mounted characters reduce it to 4. It is a gamble that crosses straight from the Front Zone to the Rear Zone."

Masamune (Samurai 5th dan, Courage+3, Finesse+1, mounted): tries to smash the enemy rear supply team.
Enemy Front Zone Domination 6, enemy Rear Zone Domination 4.

Forced Charge: 4 Energy. Check: 2d10 + Courage(+3) + Finesse(+1) >= enemy Front(6)+enemy Rear(4)+5 = 15
→ [9,8]+3+1 = 21. Success!
→ Enters the enemy rear at once. Exposed for 1 breath. Normal from the next count.

On failure:
→ Stops Defenseless in the middle of the enemy Front Zone. Energy 0. Next round Energy -3(Exhaustion).

#Demonstration 3 — Pincer Attack

Kuro: "This triggers when allies attack simultaneously from adjacent zones on both sides. All 3 conditions must be met."

[Ally Front Zone: Masamune] ←→ [Enemy Front Zone: enemy samurai] ←→ [Enemy Rear Zone: Kage (flanking)]

1. Allies occupy adjacent zones on both sides ✓
2. Both sides take attack actions in the same round ✓
3. Both sides activate [Kata/Technique] ✓

→ Pincer attack! Enemy front: **Defense -2** (debuff), cohesion checks -1, breakthrough (escape) +2

#Demonstration 4 — Drawing into the Core Zone + Reserved Defense

Kuro: "A technique that forcibly draws an enemy into the Core Zone. 3 Energy. You must break through the enemy's reserved defense first."

Enemy Front Zone:
  Kage(Shinobi, Physique+0, Ninjutsu+1) and an enemy samurai occupy the same zone.
  The enemy samurai(Domination contribution 5.5, Finesse+2, Swordsmanship+1) has Immovable Formation and a parry reserved.
  The Core Zone is adjacent to the enemy Front Zone.

Kage declares Draw In and pays 3 Energy.

1) The parry reservation triggers first.
   Kage: [8,7]+Physique(+0)+Ninjutsu(+1)+Free Core Entry(+3) = 19.
   Samurai: [5,4]+Finesse(+2)+Swordsmanship(+1) = 12.
   19 > 12 → Kage breaks through the reserved defense. The reservation is consumed.

2) Kage makes a fresh standard Draw In check.
   Target Number: 11+Domination contribution(5.5) = 17.
   Kage: [7,6]+Physique(+0)+Ninjutsu(+1)+Free Core Entry(+3) = 17.
   17 >= 17 → success. The enemy samurai is forcibly moved into the Core Zone.

→ Immovable Formation automatically ends (movement = stance release).
→ Enemy front Domination: 5.5 → 0. Ally front breakthrough is now free!

Mei: "So Immovable Formation is not an iron wall."

Kuro: "Every defense has a way through it, and every attack has a way to stop it."

If you have read these three battles and four demonstrations, standing on the battlefield should no longer frighten you. Draw your blade.
