#Scent — History Is Written in Blood

The Sengoku period did not begin overnight. Across a century, the emperor's authority collapsed, daimyo took up blades, gates to the Spirit Realm opened, and yoma set foot in the human world. This timeline records that flow.


#Law — Timeline

#100 Years Ago: Spirit Realm Tremor (靈界震動)

  • The first abbot of Mount Hiei sealed Enma-doji (閻魔童子). The Archfiend War ended.
  • In the aftermath of the seal, the Spirit Realm became unstable. Over the next 100 years, fissures slowly widened.
  • The first head of the Kagura house received territory for his role in the sealing. Kagura Domain was established.

#80 Years Ago: Spirit Realm Encroachment Begins

  • Yoma sightings increased throughout the Sengoku. Lesser yoma (zaki/gaki) appeared from the mountains.
  • Hiei League organized "exorcism patrols." The age of warrior monks began.
  • Emishi (wildlander) tribes detected the yoma encroachment first. They warned that "the kamuy are angry." They were ignored.

#60 Years Ago: Establishment of the Oni Mountain

  • Shuten-doji built a fortress in the mountains. Ko-oni and lesser oni gathered.
  • The first mountain village raid. Human and oni conflict began in earnest.
  • Kagura Domain began absorbing nearby lands under the cause of "yoma extermination."

#50 Years Ago: Tengu Warning

  • Sojobo of Muhyeon Band (tengu) sent an envoy to the human world. "The balance of the Spirit Realm is collapsing."
  • Hiei League classified tengu as "yoma." The envoy was expelled. Tengu distrust of the human world deepened.
  • Enryokan was founded. The scholar Ashikaga house opened a "yoma research school." Hiei League treated it as heresy.

#40 Years Ago: Arrival of Teppo

  • Nanban (Portuguese) merchants brought teppo to Tanegashima.
  • Artisans in Kunitomo village succeeded in domestic production. Sengoku warfare began to change.
  • Some daimyo feared that "teppo are weapons of the thunder god." Discrimination against foreigners (gaijin) began.

#30 Years Ago: Biu Mountain Infiltration

  • Tamamo-no-Mae (nine-tailed fox) infiltrated human society. Smuggling with Sakai Guild began.
  • Yoma-material smuggling routes were established. Gold flowed from yoma hands to human hands, and information flowed the other way.
  • Hiei League suspected the smuggling existed but could not find evidence.

#20 Years Ago: Hannya Awakens

  • Grudge condensed on a great battlefield. Hannya (般若) was born. The battlefield of the dead formed.
  • The onryo of the war dead organized. Hannya Altar was established. A new threat grew stronger as war continued.
  • Honganji Shonin of the Pure Land monks (Ikko-ikki) began a popular uprising. "Amida Buddha alone is the answer."

#10 Years Ago: Gate of the Spirit Realm

  • A Gate to the Spirit Realm was observed in the Hakurei Mountains. Myoan (sealer) was dispatched to Sekimori Fortress.
  • Fragments of Konryu emerged from the fissure. The existence of the Throne of the Spirit Realm was recognized for the first time.
  • Kagura Domain placed a garrison in the fortress. However, with the main force committed to the western front, the garrison was minimized.
  • First Spirit Realm Wandering Treasure appears: a samurai in the Hakurei Mountains finds a famed sword of unknown origin. The blade bears the name of an "Edo-period master smith." But that period has not yet come. Scholars were baffled, and onmyoji trembled. It was the first proof that a Gate to the Spirit Realm had opened backward through time.

#5 Years Ago: Spread of Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures

  • More weapons, armor, and books beyond time begin flowing out of the Gate to the Spirit Realm. Future famed swords and near-future commanders arrive with their names.
  • Sakai Guild enters the trade in Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures. They sell them to daimyo at high prices as "origin unknown, power guaranteed."
  • The Onmyoryo develops a ritual to identify Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures. A business of authentic/fake appraisal begins.
  • One feng shui master warns: "If too many Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures gather, a time fissure will occur." Kagura Domain ignores the warning.

#Present: Sengoku Chaos

  • The Kagura Domain vs Ikko-ikki war intensifies. Hiei League is isolated from both sides.
  • Oni activity from Shuten Mountain increases. Ibuki Garden's spider territory expands.
  • Biu Mountain's yoko infiltration spreads beyond Sakai Guild into daimyo houses.
  • Spirit Realm fissures expand to 3 places across the Sengoku. The appearance of Konryu's avatar is imminent.
  • Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures drift through the Sengoku: Miyamoto Musashi's two swords (still a child), Tokugawa Ieyasu's jinbaori (not yet ruler of the realm), and Naoe Kanetsugu's formation manual (not yet written) may reach the PCs' hands. The danger of meeting a former owner becomes a core scenario hook.

#The Year of the "Present" — 5 GM Recommendations

Konsei Reiyotan is a world branched from real history. Therefore, it does not pin the "present" to an exact year. However, so the GM can reference the ages and events of major historical warriors and figures when their names appear in a campaign, this section presents 5 recommended options. The choice is at GM discretion.

Each option assumes "the branched history of Konsei Reiyotan," so some divergence from real history is acceptable. Figures can appear while not yet famous or having chosen another fate.

GM Use Guidelines:

  • To introduce the 5 swordmasters (Ito, Yagyu, Bokuden, Kojiro, Musashi) in scenarios such as co-09-10. Fiend Reincarnation, option 4 or 5 is natural.
  • The Spirit Realm Wandering Treasure mechanism (future famed swords) works more strongly in options 1~3 (the paradox of the present obtaining the blade of someone not yet born).
  • To call Yi Sun-sin as a heroic spirit, options 1~4 all work (the Imjin War of 1592 is a "future that has not yet come").
  • Options may be mixed. A split such as "base 1582, but scenario A is a 1570 flashback" is allowed.

The concrete locations for the phrase "expanded to 3 places across the Sengoku" are not fixed. The GM chooses 3 of 8 candidates (or more) to fit the campaign map.

#Selection Guidelines

  • Default Campaign: use the 1st 3 candidates as-is → "Hakurei, Shuten Mountain, Ibuki Garden."
  • Region-Focused Campaign: take 1 candidate from the 1st group centered on the region + replace with 1~2 candidates from the 2nd group. Example: for a Kii theme, "Hakurei, Kumano, Ibuki Garden."
  • Final Expansion: to activate the "fissures ≥ 4" condition in Enma-doji Seal Weakening Conditions, add Mount Kurai as the 4th location (directly tied to the sealer's trail).
  • The GM may create new locations. The 8 above are only recommended options with existing setting connections.

History repeats. The seal from 100 years ago is about to break, and new heroes are needed.
