#Onmyoji Sample: Abe Seika (安倍晴華)

Contents

"What the eye cannot see moves the world."

Abe Seika, an onmyoji, upper body portrait, holding a folding fan and a small star chart, calm and calculating gaze, one faint shikigami at her side.

#1st Dan — Young Onmyoji

#Scent

A low-ranking disciple of the Abe house. She left home young and spent several years studying scripture at a Kyoto branch shrine. She knows nothing of direct combat, but can handle one shikigami. Her eyes are clear and her voice is low. She is calmer than her peers and does not find silence awkward.

#Background — How the Adventure Began

The Kyoto Abe main house preserves the name of Abe no Seimei. Seika was a collateral child of that main house — the second daughter of the fifth branch. Her mother sent her to the Kyoto branch shrine at age seven. The reason was unclear. One story says it was because rumors spread in that region that the girl dreamed in her mother's place. Another says it was because, when the family's third son was bewitched by a yoko, only Seika did not leave his side.

The ten years at the branch shrine were years of scripture, paper, and ink. Seika first learned how to read her teacher's shikigami. She was taught that shikigami are not commanded, but "persuaded." She received her first shikigami in the spring of the year she turned seventeen — a small sparrow-shaped shikigami. Its name was Suo (蘇緒). When Seika spoke to it, Suo tilted its tiny head. In that moment, Seika understood why she was here.

She received her first official Onmyoryo mission at eighteen: an investigation of a yoma incident in Kagura Domain. At the scene, she met the esoteric monk Enku for the first time. Looking into each other's eyes, they learned that scripture and mantra were different things. Enku said to her — "Why do your shikigami's eyes look so sad?" Seika could not answer. That question made it impossible for her to leave the field.

#5th Dan — Tsuchimikado Inheritor

#Scent

She returned to Kyoto and received the Tsuchimikado main house's Secret Transmission (秘人秘伝). She has contracts with five shikigami and summons up to three of them in each combat. She speaks even less now. She spends more time observing than praying. Background route: Path of the Righteous Monk (B) — she has chosen to become one who mediates between yoma and humans.

#Background — How She Came This Far

After 1st dan, Seika stayed in the Kagura Domain region for four years and investigated or resolved six yoma incidents. Most could have ended with simple exorcism, but Seika always investigated the origin of the yoma first. Why did the onryo arise? Why did the yoko disguise itself as human? Where had the ko-oni come down from? What Seika discovered through that work was that most yoma had been created by human actions.

In her third incident, she voluntarily chose sealing instead of exorcism. The onryo belonged to a dead farmer, and he had surviving family. If the onryo was sealed instead of cut down, the family could hold memorial rites for him each year. Enku objected, but Seika did not bend her judgment. That incident caused her name to reach the Kyoto main house, though the evaluation split in two: "rare talent" and "one to watch."

The head of the Tsuchimikado main house summoned her. "You bear Abe blood, yet you walk the Tsuchimikado path." In that way, the Tsuchimikado-ryu Secret Transmission — Curse(check -3 debuff) — was transmitted to her. Seika received it, but has never used it once. The head had told her that Secret Transmission includes not using it.

Her shikigami also increased: four more besides Suo. Kurashi, wolf type; Mizuki, owl type; Shizuka, snake type; and Kumoyo, butterfly type. Each was called from a different scripture. Seika does not treat them as simple tools. Every dawn she calls their names, and when parting, she says farewell.

When she opened the Path of the Righteous Monk route, Seika wrote this: "Yoma are not answers, but questions. I am trying to answer those questions."

#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — "Yosen (妖仙)"

Abe Seika, the "Immortal Sage," seated amid drifting talismans and a faint shikigami, dressed in flowing court robes; she has never drawn a blade.

#Scent

An immortal sage who commands yoma. Advisor to the Kyoto Onmyoryo and honorary onmyoji of Kagura Domain. Her shikigami can no longer be distinguished from yoma. Outside the Abe house, outside the Tsuchimikado path, she has become the boundary itself between humans and yoma.

Renown Title: Skill Saint — Yosen. Sorcery automatically hits, deals +1 Wound, and costs 1 less Energy(minimum 1).

#Background — How She Earned the Renown Title

The incident that made Seika a legend is called the Year of the Hundred Demons' Sealing. When a Night Parade of a Hundred Demons (百鬼夜行) began at Kyoto's outskirts and advanced toward the capital over twelve nights, the Kyoto Onmyoryo and the esoteric Buddhist headquarters argued for direct exorcism. Seika opposed them alone. Those yoma, she said, were all "beings with reasons." Grudges, regrets, promises. Each one had to be untangled.

She spent twelve nights on the road with five shikigami. On the first night, she sealed seventy-nine onryo without fighting. On the seventh night, she negotiated with eleven yoko. On the final night, she sat across from the old Obaa who led the hundred demons and shared tea. After drinking, Obaa entered the sealing talisman of her own will. "If this age no longer wants us."

What made all of this possible was the fact that Seika never took up a sword. She did not use sorcery; she spoke. The reason she received the Renown Title Sorcery Saint was paradoxical: Kyoto had to honor "the sorcerer who did not use sorcery" as the one who understood the essence of sorcery most deeply.

Now Seika serves as an advisor among Kyoto, Kagura Domain, and one unnamed yoma community. Guests come to her house: humans and yoma alike. It is impossible to tell who is who. And she likes that boundary.
