#Esoteric Monk Sample: Enku (圓空)

Contents

"Namu Daishi Benzaiten. This sutra is armor."

Enku, a mikkyo monk, complete upper body from head to waist, prayer beads wrapped around one hand, a vajra held low, robe edges dissolving into white, silent exorcist posture.

#1st Dan — Exorcist Monk of a Mountain Temple

#Scent

A trainee monk from a Mount Hiei branch temple. Quiet, with a blunt, solid build. His voice when reciting sutras is loud and low. His body moves first and thought follows afterward. He does not fear grappling with yoma in the Core Zone.

#Background — How the Adventure Began

Enku's real name was Ichitaro (市太郎). He was born the third son of a farming family in Mikawa. During a year of poor harvest, when there was not enough food for the whole family, his mother entrusted him to a temple. He was nine. The temple was a Mount Hiei branch temple, and the branch had an old custom of taking in poor children and assigning them to training.

Ichitaro was not good at memorizing sutras. He was not unintelligent, but sitting in front of books did not suit his body. Instead, he was the child who found yoma traces first when going to gather firewood. The branch elder assigned him to special training: exorcism training. "You seem better suited to learning in the mountains than in the library."

At fifteen, he faced his first real exorcism. One small onryo, and one fox-type yoko at a remote mountain pass. Ichitaro discovered that his tanto and fists moved before the sutra, and he was not ashamed of it. The elder said — "The Buddha's compassion has many paths. Your path is the fist. Change your name."

In that way he received the name Enku (圓空) — "round emptiness (空)." It meant one whose scripture and body draw a single circle.

His first full mission came at eighteen. A band of ko-oni had come down from the mountains in the Kagura Domain region and was attacking villages. At the scene, he encountered a young onmyoji named Abe Seika. She read scripture and he threw punches — that was the moment a relationship began in which they did not understand each other, yet completed each other.

#5th Dan — Monk of Vajra

#Scent

After several years of field exorcism, he gained the Adamantine Body. He received a Shugendo-ryu license from the Mount Hiei head temple and became a member of the warrior-monk corps (僧兵團). Several yoma claw scars remain on his face. Sutras still come after his fists, but those fists now carry compassion. Background route: Warrior-Monk Path (A).

#Background — How He Came This Far

After 1st dan, Enku was assigned to the Kagura Domain borderlands as a resident exorcist monk for three years. During that time, he handled nine yoma incidents. Two of them were with Seika. During their first cooperation, Enku said, "While you read the scripture, I will block the front." Seika remembers those words even now.

In the autumn of the second year, Enku was dispatched to purge a yoma lair in Shikoku. There he fought one retainer of a Tatarigami. The retainer had physical form, and Enku's tanto could not land a finishing blow. Enku set the tanto down and broke the retainer's arm with his bare hands. In the moment Unarmed Combat worked more strongly than scripture, Enku saw the possibility of Adamantine Body for the first time. A body for an instant that did not lose Wounds. The moment the Buddha's compassion entered the body.

Because of that incident, the Mount Hiei head temple summoned Enku. The elder granted him a Shugendo-ryu license and at the same time urged him toward the Warrior-Monk Path. Warrior monks are both practitioners and warriors. They are the ones who draw blades first when the temple is attacked. Enku did not refuse. "My fists are already being used as the Buddha's tools."

On the Warrior-Monk Path, Enku learned Lotus Meditation: sitting during a lull, reciting sutras, and recovering Wounds. He also received a vajra, a ritual weapon specialized for yoma. With the first swing, one yoma was split in two. Enku began calling the weapon by a new name: Onigoroshi (鬼殺).

#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — "Human Weapon"

#Scent

A legendary warrior monk. The practical battlefield commander of Mount Hiei. More spells are engraved on his body than on his face. Those who have seen him fight while reciting sutras say, "I did not know the Buddha's compassion could look so terrifying." Renown Title: Class Capstone — Vajra Guardian.

#Background — How He Earned the Renown Title

Enku's legend was completed in the Mount Hiei Assault Incident. When a yoma group allied with Hannyakai attacked the Mount Hiei head temple directly, most of the temple elders were immersed in scripture. Enku stood alone on the stone steps before the main hall. What he protected was the temple's principal image and the lives of twelve children, all five years old: young trainee monks who had not managed to evacuate.

Enku held the stone steps for six hours. Three oni, eighteen ko-oni, and two retainers of a Tatarigami. Blood never stopped running from his body, but his feet did not move. Adamantine Body continued, and just before breaking, his body returned to its original state again, six times. Meanwhile, the head temple elders completed the barrier ritual, and the remaining yoma were sealed.

When Enku came down from the stone steps, the children were alive. Seventeen new scars had appeared on Enku's face. He was still reciting sutras. He had not stopped even once.

After that day, the Mount Hiei head temple gave Enku the Renown Title Vajra Guardian. Vajra Guardian is the name of the Buddha's protector who guards a temple entrance. Enku said, "I am not a guardian. I was only standing in front so the children would not be afraid." But one young trainee monk who heard him murmured, "That is why you are a guardian."

Now Enku is the liaison between Kagura Domain and Mount Hiei, and the one dispatched as a Front Zone combatant when large yoma invasions occur. Those who have seen him say, "When that man is standing there, children are not afraid."
