#Scent — The Person Called Akihisa

#Appearance

Sixteen. His build is a handspan smaller than samurai his age. His face is still young, but the line of his jaw has already begun to harden. He ties his forelock neatly back, and a faint new wrinkle crosses his forehead. It appeared after the drift.

His eyes are too calm. They are not eyes a sixteen-year-old should have. Yet it is clear that this is neither performance nor training — those are the eyes of someone who has already given something up.

In formal settings he wears black kamishimo. In daily life, dark indigo hakama and a gray everyday kimono. He always wears the wakizashi inherited from his father at his waist. He believes he has not yet earned the right to wear a katana.

#Speech

Brief. A single sentence never becomes two paragraphs. He says what is needed, listens, and moves to the next decision. His polite speech does not change by listener — not for old soldiers, farmers, or shinobi his own age. That is not distance. It is his default respect.

Yet very rarely, when he is alone at night, he writes a diary with his father's brush. Those sentences are much longer and much more honest. If a PC finds the diary (he has not hidden it; it is simply that no one reads it), they see another side of him.

#Symbolic Props

  • Wakizashi: his father's keepsake. A small inscription on the blade reads "soundless 無聲."
  • Brush: a relic from his mother's line. Not the brush his father used, but the one used by his mother, who died when he was young.
  • Kettle: an old kettle he uses to brew tea alone at night. Its handle has been repaired many times.
  • One scroll from his father: still sealed. He has not opened it either. His father died suddenly 2 years before the drift — who can say what cause and effect lie between?

#Growth Track

Akihisa grows alongside the PCs during the campaign. Dan by arc:

ArcExpected DanAutomatically Learned Trait
Chapter 11st~2nd danBattlefield Flower 1 time (borrowed from performer)
Chapter 23rd danschool swordsmanship "Jigen-ryu" license (if his teacher dies)
Chapter 34th~5th danCommand (borrowed from scholar)
Chapter 46th~7th danenhanced retainer summons
Chapter 58th~9th dancondition to gain a Renown Title — campaign-ending device

Important: Akihisa does not reach a 10th-dan Renown Title. At the campaign ending, he remains "one who lived out the role of lord." His growth speed is deliberately tuned so that PCs can reach a Renown Title.

#Crossroads of Three Ways and Six Hearts

At the starting point, Akihisa's Heart (心) is not fixed. His Heart is decided by PC influence during the campaign.

#Heart-Shift Triggers — Each Chapter Climax

ChapterHeart Choice PresentedHow PCs Influence It
Chapter 1Loyalty (house) vs Compassion (residents)witnesses the PCs' first choice
Chapter 2Truth (truth) vs Void (secret)result of negotiation vs betrayal
Chapter 3Hegemony (lordship) vs Compassion (coexistence)response after discovering past sins
Chapter 4Demon (transformation) vs Loyalty (continuation)mirror of a previous drifter's choice
Chapter 5final Heart fixedreflects the PCs' ending choice

After each chapter climax, Akihisa's Heart tilts by 1. At the end of Chapter 5, the Heart with the strongest tilt becomes his fixed Heart.

#Influence Check

When a PC makes a major choice in front of Akihisa (handling an NPC, choosing an ending branch, and the like):

  • the PC's Heart direction gives Akihisa a +2 tilt
  • if all PCs disagree, Akihisa judges for himself (Presence +0 basic check)
  • Fate Intervention can be used — Akihisa himself, 1 time / campaign

#Akihisa's Reactions by Major Event

#Seeing Off an Expedition (Always)

Akihisa stands beside the stone wall in the courtyard. It is closer to roll call than farewell. He calls each person's name.
After each name, he says briefly:
 "Toma, return."
 "Kagemitsu, return."
 "... Return."
Last, each PC's name once. Then he lowers his head. Even after you pass by, he does not raise it.

#Expedition Return — Everyone Survived

"Good work." (briefly)
Then he enters his study without another word. 20 minutes later, he leaves the study and returns to work.
(During those 20 minutes, he writes in his diary. If a PC later reads it: "Today I did not lose even one. Today.")

#Expedition Return — Casualties Occurred

He hears the names of the casualties. He lowers his head. He closes his eyes.
"Understood. I will go to his house myself."
That night, the lord personally visits the bereaved family and tells them directly. This grants resident morale +1.
A PC may accompany him in this scene — tilt Three Ways and Six Hearts toward Compassion.

#Barrier HP Crisis (Barrier HP 20 or lower)

For a while, he says nothing. Then:
"... Please do not sleep tonight, onmyoji-sama."
Then he also climbs above the castle gate and stays awake through the night.
A PC may come to be with him — the conversation that night is one of the few chances in this campaign to see the "real Akihisa."

#Resident Morale Crisis (morale 3 or lower)

He stands in the village square in person. He gathers all residents.
"I know what I cannot promise you. I cannot promise that we can return,
nor that everyone can live. The only thing I can promise is
that I will remain in this place until the end."
Morale +2 (speech effect). However, this speech can be used only 1 time per campaign.

#Akihisa's Diary (Player Reward)

When PCs meet certain conditions, they can read part of Akihisa's diary. The GM should share one passage from the diary at an appropriate moment.

#Conditions and Revealed Passages

Condition 1 — Affinity 3 or higher with Akihisa (negotiation/companionship):

"It was a late-spring night. Half the cherry blossoms had already fallen, and only white remnants remained in the courtyard. That night, the earth split, and the veranda where I stood tilted. The onmyoji came running from the shrine. I could not move. I am still ashamed that it was not I, but he, who moved."

Condition 2 — After the Chapter 2 climax:

"Father taught me that 'to govern is to listen.' Today I decided without asking. I still do not know whether that decision was right. If making decisions is what it means to govern, then governance is a lonely thing."

Condition 3 — After cumulative resident deaths reach 5:

"It was the fifth. I visited the family and bowed. The grandmother of that house took my hand and said, 'Young lord, you may cry.' I did not cry. In that house, even in that house, I did not cry. What am I?"

Condition 4 — Just before entering Chapter 5 Act 4:

"I want to send all these people back to the core world. That is all I want. But if the price of sending them back is myself, would I hesitate? I hope I would not. If I am one who hesitates, I was never qualified to be lord."

#Akihisa's End (By Ending Branch)

#Return Ending

Akihisa returns to the core world with the domain. Heart fixed:

  • If tilted toward Loyalty → continues as the Kagamiyama kokujin. Joins the retinue of a prospective domain lord.
  • If tilted toward Compassion → after a pardon for the domain, supports a monastery → shifts into resident welfare policy.
  • If tilted toward Void → covers up the truth of the drift. Tells residents only that "it was a nightmare."

#Settlement Ending

Akihisa is renamed "lord of the Spirit Realm." Formal coronation at age 18.

  • Establishes a new legal system for the Spirit Realm (PCs advise)
  • Attempts "shadow trade" with the core world
  • In the long term, becomes a legend of the human domain in the Spirit Realm

#Transformation Ending

If some PCs choose transformation, Akihisa remains in the core world but creates a ritual to cross into the Spirit Realm once each year and reunite with the PCs. That becomes his new duty.

#Tragedy Branch

Conditions under which Akihisa can die (use with care):

  • shares fate with the domain when Barrier HP reaches 0 (ending fixed)
  • in an onmyoji sacrifice ending, Akihisa chooses "I will go instead" (if PCs permit)
  • in Chapter 4, follows the path of a previous drifter (extreme Demon Heart)

These branches are recommended only when all players consent.

#Akihisa and PC Relationships — Affinity Axis

(Separate from core fame and relationships, this supplement tracks individual Affinity between Akihisa and each PC. Romance System can apply.)

#Akihisa Romance (Option)

Romance with Akihisa becomes possible after close retainer (Affinity 5+). Details are handled in Romance System and Human Partners.

Note: Akihisa is 16. Tables sensitive to young-age romance themes should disable this option. Alternatively, stop at "romantic trust" (a promise of union after adulthood).

#GM Operation Tips

#How to Keep Akihisa Alive

  • Keep words scarce and judgment firm: his lines should be short.
  • A lord's grief does not show in public: he only collapses when alone. A scene where a PC sees that collapse is relationship depth.
  • Show growth through appearance: dan increase = changing from wakizashi to katana, shaving the forelock and tying formal hair, voice growing lower.
  • Take the threat of death seriously: leave open the possibility of Akihisa's death in the final chapter. If he is safe, the weight disappears.

#Easy Mistakes

  • RPing Akihisa as if he knows every answer: he is 16. He does not know. He asks. He hesitates.
  • Exaggerating the lord's dignity: a kokujin is not a daimyo. He does not swagger.
  • Staging him as ruling over the PCs: he is closer to "the party's patron." Not commands, but requests.
  • Overplaying emotion: he is someone who endures. A single line of emotion he lets slip is heavier than a long speech.
