#10 Famous Sengoku-Period Japanese Squads

Complies with the core squad-grade standard. Adds only unique aptitudes/tactics.

Morale notation convention: in this file, "squad Cohesion ±N" / "Cohesion ±N" / "morale ±N" all follow the 00-05 §12 mapping — core alone = squad Cohesion, 1st-expansion campaign = domain morale, using the 30-03 variant = this expansion's morale. The body uses the unified notation "squad Cohesion."

#25-02-01. Akazonae (赤備え) — the crimson elite of the Takeda/Sanada/Ii houses

Akasonae crimson elite: a dense line of mounted warriors mid-advance, curved helms, forward lances, heavy cross-hatch armor, blank banner

Grade: Veteran-grade / Wounds 3 / Defense 13 / Equipment: yari/mounted

  • Unique Aptitude [Terror of the Enemy Line]: adjacent enemy squad Cohesion -1 (always-on).
  • Unique Tactic [Enemy-Line Breakthrough]: [Tactic:stance] Energy 2. On the next round's charge, ignore the enemy's Defense +3. 1 time per session.

Hire:

  • "Crimson Standard-Bearer" renown, or
  • ties of 3 stages or higher with the Takeda/Sanada/Ii houses, or
  • a warrior-house PC with renown value 15+
  • Cost: core Veteran-grade × 3× (standing stipend)
  • Loyalty: immediate disband upon dishonor/treason

#25-02-02. Shinsengumi (新選組) — the Bakumatsu Kyoto shogunate guard

  • Source: Shinsengumi (formed in 1864, led by Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo)
  • Era: Bakumatsu (1864~1869)
  • Cultural Sphere: late-Edo Japan

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 10 / Equipment: katana

  • Unique Aptitude [Group Sword Formation]: when 4 or more squad members are adjacent, Swordsmanship check +2.
  • Unique Tactic [3-Man Cell]: [Tactic:stance] Energy 3. Squad scope. A cell of 3 in 1 group pressures 1 target. Target evasion -3. 1 combat.

Hire:

  • Bakumatsu-era campaign only
  • "Shogunate Guard" renown or official shogunate appointment
  • Cost: core Minion-grade × 2×
  • Loyalty: disband upon violation of loyalty to the shogunate

#25-02-03. War-God Night Raiders (武神 夜襲隊) — the elite of the Uesugi house

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 11 / Equipment: tanto/Ninjutsu tools

  • Unique Aptitude [Night Vision]: in night combat, all checks +2 (enemies -2).
  • Unique Tactic [War-God's Single Strike]: [Kata] Energy 4. Night only. The whole squad makes a simultaneous surprise attack. First-round attack +5. 1 combat.

Hire:

  • ties with the Uesugi house or "Heir of the War-God" renown
  • Cost: core Minion-grade × 2×
  • Loyalty: refuses honest dealings (night-raid specialists)

#25-02-04. Shimazu Withdrawal Formation (島津 退格陣) — the Shimazu house's rearguard fire team

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 10 / Equipment: matchlock

  • Unique Aptitude [Rear Volley]: when in a rear position, firearm attack +2.
  • Unique Tactic [Hoshisei (奉矢制)]: [Tactic:stance] Energy 3. Squad members fire to the rear in a single line. Neutralizes the enemy's pursuit. 1 combat.

#25-02-05. Honda Four Armies (本多 四軍) — the retainer elite of Honda Tadakatsu

Grade: Veteran-grade / Wounds 3 / Defense 13 / Equipment: spear/heavy armor

  • Unique Aptitude [Undefeated Renown]: renown bonus + enemy squad Cohesion -1.
  • Unique Tactic [Undefeated 1-Strike]: [Kata] Energy 4. Triggers when the squad has 0 deaths in 1 combat. Attack +4. 2 times per campaign.

  • ties with the Tokugawa/Honda houses
  • "Heir of the Four Armies" renown
  • Cost: core Veteran-grade × 2.5×
  • Loyalty: loyalty to the Tokugawa

#25-02-06. Iga Fuma Regiment (伊賀 風魔 連隊) — an Iga-ryu Ninjutsu collective

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 10 / Equipment: Ninjutsu tools/tanto

  • Unique Aptitude [Shadow Stealth]: the whole squad's Infiltration/concealment check +3.
  • Unique Tactic [Fuma Single Raid]: [Kata] Energy 4. night/concealment + on Critical Hit + simultaneous squad = 3 limiting conditions. The whole squad makes an instant-death check on 1 target (Fate+Presence >= 11). 1 combat. Complies with 00-05 §10 Attack-Bonus Limitation.

Hire:

  • an Iga-ryu core school or a 14-02 Fuma-ryu license
  • a secret commissioner is possible
  • Cost: core Minion-grade × 3× (secret dealing)
  • Loyalty: keeping the commission secret

#25-02-07. Hozoin-ryu Spear Monks (寶蔵院流 槍僧) — the martial monk order of Hozoin temple

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 11 / Equipment: cross-spear

  • Unique Aptitude [Cross Grip]: enemy weapon-grab check +2.
  • Unique Tactic [Weapon Seal]: [Kata] Energy 3. Seal 1 target's weapon for 1 combat. 1 combat.

Hire:

  • ties with Hozoin temple
  • a Hozoin-ryu license is recommended
  • Cost: core Minion-grade × 2×
  • Loyalty: adherence to the temple's teachings

#25-02-08. Oda Teppo Corps (織田 鐵砲隊) — Oda Nobunaga's firearm elite

Grade: Veteran-grade / Wounds 3 / Defense 11 / Equipment: matchlock

  • Unique Aptitude [3-Rank Fire]: deploy the squad in 3 ranks. Every round, 1 rank volleys.
  • Unique Tactic [Oda Volley]: [Tactic:stance] Energy 4. Squad scope. For 3 rounds, volley every round (3 times total). 1 combat.

  • ties with the Oda house or "Descendant of the Teppo Corps" renown
  • Cost: core Veteran-grade × 3×
  • Loyalty: gunpowder supply required

#25-02-09. Yokai Hunter Band (妖怪狩り團) — a yoma-hunting squad under an onmyoji

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 11 / Equipment: talisman/sword/bow

  • Unique Aptitude [Yoma Aptitude]: all checks against yoma targets +2.
  • Unique Tactic [Sealing Rite]: [Kata] Energy 5. 1 combat 1 time + yoma only + on Critical Hit = 3 limiting conditions. Seal 1 yoma (1 session). When the seal breaks, GM discretion. Complies with 00-05 §10 Attack-Bonus Limitation.

  • the onmyoji class or ties with an onmyoji main house

  • Loyalty: the mission of yoma-hunting

#25-02-10. Ashigaru Unification Squad (足軽 統一隊) — a commoner integration squad

Grade: Minion-grade / Wounds 1 / Defense 12 / Equipment: yari/ordinary (core ashigaru convention: co-00-02-axioms §9)

  • Unique Aptitude [Group Will]: when there are 6 or more squad members, squad Cohesion +2.
  • Unique Tactic [Unified Charge]: [Tactic:stance] Energy 2. Squad scope. A simultaneous charge. First-round attack +1 · relocation +1. 1 combat.

Hire:

  • main-class dan 5 or higher, or a commoner-mobilization merit
  • commoner mobilization
  • Cost: core Minion-grade × 1.5× (commoner-friendly)
  • Loyalty: commoner-friendly

  • Distribution of 10 squads: Veteran-grade 3 (Akazonae/Honda/Oda) + Minion-grade 7 (varied).
  • Era diversity: Sengoku 8 + Bakumatsu 1 (Shinsengumi) + commoner 1 (Ashigaru).
  • School/class linkage: directly linked to this expansion's schools, such as Hozoin-ryu, Iga-ryu, and the onmyoji class.
