#Opening Vignette — The Adversary's Name

An onryo was weeping backstage. The audience believed it was the actor's performance and broke into applause; the shogunate inspector was counting heads; the Hundred-Tale Society's emissary was listening to learn what name that weeping would fetch.

"That is what must be cut." The young swordsman pointed behind the curtain.

The inspector shook his head. "Cut only that, and the theater owner puts up a different Kaidan tomorrow."

The theater owner flushed. "We only ran a business."

"Was the money paid to the censor also business?"

The censor in the back of the house rose from his seat. Beside him stood a kept ronin with a fine blade concealed on his person. The ronin smiled and said, "People make far more noise than an onryo."

The weeping behind the curtain shifted to laughter. Someone was stoking it. The more fear swelled, the more vivid the yoma became; the more vivid the yoma, the more the crowds paid for a seat.

"Then who is the enemy?" the swordsman asked.

The inspector folded his fingers one by one. "The onryo. The one who sold the onryo. The one who concealed it. The one who used it to move others. And the one trying to claim a new name from the opening it left."

That is why the Edo Adversary Catalog does not look only at Wounds and Defense. It looks not at the single monster standing before the blade, but at the people, yoma, and organizations that hold the center of an incident together. The names that must be defeated are always more than one.

#Scent — The Enemy at the Center of the Incident

Edo's adversaries become dangerous not by their size as monsters but by their position within an incident. Dojo disciples, a possessed daimyo, a black-badge oyabun, a yoma sitting like the master of someone else's house — each draws blades in a different way.

#Law — Adversary Data

  • Do not create new data when existing co adversaries are sufficient.
  • New adversaries are limited to those used repeatedly in Edo incidents.
  • Human Lord-grade entries follow the co stat formula; yoma Lord-grade entries follow the co yoma format.

#Detailed Documents

"Adversary data is not just numbers — it is the reason an incident keeps going to the end."
