#Fiction Intro — "The First Lesson of the System"

Chiba Shusaku, systematizing sword teacher, complete upper body from head to waist, bamboo practice sword and instruction posture, orderly training hall implied by two sparse.

Around 1822. The Chiba dojo in Edo. Just after its opening.

The young Chiba Shusaku stands before dozens of trainees. One thing differs from the existing swordsmanship dojo — a blackboard. He writes on the blackboard the names and numbers of the forms (kata).

"Form One · Form Two · Form Three ... there are 68 forms in all. From today, you will learn them in number order, one form a month. In 5 years 8 months you can master every form."

One trainee raises a hand.

"Master, until now the dojo learned the forms naturally."

"That is a waste."

Chiba answers firmly.

"Learning naturally takes 10 years. My method is 5 years 8 months. Make a chart and follow it — that is all."

This was the first systematized teaching method in the history of Japanese swordsmanship. Chiba's true achievement.

#Scent — Life in History

#Life

Chiba Shusaku — born in Shimosa Province in 1794. A poor family. In his youth he learned Ono-ha Itto-ryu. He had talent, but was disillusioned by the inefficient teaching method of the traditional dojo.

Around 1822, he moved to Edo. He opened his own dojo, the Genbukan (玄武館), and founded his own school, Hokushin Itto-ryu (北辰一刀流). "Hokushin" is the North Star — the reference for every direction.

The Genbukan's morning begins in quiet order. The disciples look at the wooden tags hung on the wall and confirm the number of the form they will learn that day. The master gives no long explanations. When one pair dons armor and clashes, another pair watches the movement and waits its turn. It is not a dojo where only those who stay long learn, but a dojo where anyone who follows the order reaches the same gate.

His innovations come from this scene:

  • Numbering the forms (kata) — assigning numbers to the 68 forms for sequential education.
  • Compilation of a textbook (kyohon) — the first systematic swordsmanship book set down in writing.
  • Expanded use of the shinai and armor — fierce training without actual injury became possible.

The result: hundreds of trainees. One of Edo's 3 great dojo — "Chiba of Technique."

Famous among his disciples:

  • Sakamoto Ryoma — the architect of modern Japan.
  • Todo Heisuke — captain of the Shinsengumi's 8th unit.
  • Ito Kashitaro — staff officer of the Shinsengumi.
  • And countless Restoration patriots — many of the Restoration's leading figures came from the Chiba dojo.

In short, Chiba is the man who designed the bakumatsu's sword. His system made the Restoration's blade.

Died at age 61.

#The Real Story

The significance of systematization: Swordsmanship before Chiba was a matter of "stay long in the dojo and you learn." Chiba changed this to "follow the chart and you learn." This was a form of modernization — making knowledge systematizable and reproducible.

The expansion of armor (bogu): armor existed before that as well, but in Chiba's age it was applied to large-scale training. The origin of modern kendo (剣道) lies here.

The "three dojo" of the bakumatsu:

  1. Chiba of Technique — Chiba Shusaku's Genbukan. A technical system.
  2. Saito of Power — Saito Yakuro's Renpeikan. Shinto Munen-ryu. A sword of strong force.
  3. Momoi of Rank — Momoi Shunzo's Shigakukan. Kyoshin Meichi-ryu. Dignity and form.

The three dojo, exchanging with one another, made the bakumatsu's sword.

#Night Tales

"The disciple changes the age" — Chiba has no history of taking part in combat himself. Yet his disciples achieved the Restoration. There is even a saying: "Without Chiba's disciples, there would have been no Restoration."

"The 68 forms" — the 68 forms of Hokushin Itto-ryu that Chiba organized are still the basis of Japanese kendo today. His systematization led the "standardization" of Japanese swordsmanship.

"The meeting with Sakamoto Ryoma" — when the young Ryoma came to the Chiba dojo, Chiba was already an old man. There is a tradition that Chiba, recognizing Ryoma's talent, told him, "You should walk a path other than the sword." Ryoma became a statesman even while being a swordsman.

#To Fight the Swordsman

#Matchup

  • Flexibility: with his 68-form system, he adapts to any opponent. Formulaic attacks do not work.
  • Old age: died at age 61, with almost no record of actual duels. The chance of the PCs fighting him is extremely remote in scenario terms.

#The Three Paths to Victory

#Path 1 — Head-on Duel (recommendation ★)

  • Extremely difficult. As an instructor rather than a man of actual battle, he has the stamina issues of old age, but his understanding of swordsmanship is supreme.
  • Surprise Attack + squad + multiple weapons.

#Path 2 — Win His Regard (recommendation ★★★)

  • Show an understanding of the system and he will acknowledge you.
  • He respects PCs who propose new forms · new methods.

#Path 3 — Circumvent (recommendation ★★)

  • A connection through his disciples (especially Sakamoto Ryoma).
  • The people who question his system — you can exploit the tension with conservative swordsmen.

#To Take the Swordsman as a Master

#Approach

The Edo Genbukan dojo. Chiba's dojo is open to the public. Anyone can register. There is, however, a monthly fee — the poor may substitute it with cleaning and the like.

#Conditions

  • You need not stand out — Chiba teaches equally.
  • The patience to keep the order of learning.
  • An attitude that respects the system.

#Course of Study

  • 1 form per 1 month — with 68 forms, all forms are completed in 5 years 8 months.
  • Real armored sparring along the way.
  • Full licensure (menkyo kaiden): 5 years 8 months or more + an additional 1~2 years. Roughly 7 years.

#Rewards

  • Transmission of Hokushin Itto-ryu: Thousand Forms at full licensure. After that, Single-Stroke Short Beat once you reach swordsmanship Master.
  • A copy of the textbook Chiba made (useful when the PCs later open their own dojo).
  • The title "Chiba's disciple" — the most powerful pedigree of the bakumatsu.
  • In addition, a fellow-disciple (domon) network — connection as a peer with Sakamoto Ryoma, Todo Heisuke, and others.

#GM Notes

Chiba Shusaku is "the swordsman who designed an age." He does not fight himself. Instead, he makes those who will fight in the future. His scenarios are generally set in his dojo. A narrative in which the PCs become his disciples and exchange with Ryoma and others.

Scenario hooks:

  • A newcomer at the Genbukan dojo — the PCs start as Ryoma's peers.
  • A dojo raid by conservative swordsmen who oppose Chiba's systematization.
  • A plot by both the shogunate and Restoration sides to draw away the Chiba dojo's disciples — Chiba himself tries to keep his neutrality.

"Swordsmanship is not art. It is technique. Technique must be teachable. What cannot be taught is not the real thing." — Chiba Shusaku
