#RP Aid for the Religious Classes
Contents
A class says what one can do. Thought says why one does it.
#Opening Fragment — Same Battlefield, Different Prayers
When the yoma appeared before the castle gate, the six of them saw the same battlefield, but they did not see the same thing. The onmyoji saw the stars and the direction of the gate; the esoteric monk saw the darkness gathered on the yoma's brow. The Pure Land Monk saw the trembling lips of an ashigaru; the shugenja pressed the old scar on his own wrist.
The feng shui master said in a low voice, "The gate is not the problem. The ground is sinking inward."
The scholar spread out a map. "There are three routes of retreat. But if we open the north gate, the households fall first."
The esoteric monk took up his vajra. "Then I will stand in the Front Zone."
The Pure Land Monk shook his head. "The Front Zone alone will not hold. Call the names of those soldiers first. What collapses is the heart, before the gate."
Folding his talisman, the onmyoji said, "Let each of us do our own work. Even facing the same enemy, we are not standing here for the same reason."
In that scene, a class was not an ability chart. What each one sees first, what each one fears, what each one uses their strength for — that was already making half of the RP.
#Scope
This document is an RP aid for existing classes. It does not make new traits, new sorcery, or new schools.
The targets are mainly the following classes.
As reference classes on the Way of Mystery and xian side, we also look at wildlander and arahitogami.
#Onmyoji
The onmyoji is not explained by only one of the Confucian, Buddhist, or Xian. Onmyodo is a system of technique and learning that mixes Daoism, Shinto, esoteric Buddhism, astronomy, and ritual.
| Axis | RP Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Confucianism | The official onmyoji who values court, house, duty, license, and ritual procedure. |
| Buddhism | The onmyoji who handles defilement and onryo, borrowing esoteric mantra and Barrier. |
| Zen | The contemplative onmyoji who reduces words and reads the stars and the breath. Used as a supporting color. |
| Way of Mystery | The onmyoji who follows the stars, directions, spirit-veins, kami, and the law of the world. |
The core question of the onmyoji is "the responsibility of the one who knows." When you see the future, will you speak it? When you know a Curse, will you use it? When you see a way to coexist with yoma, will you report it to human order?
Sample speech:
- "The star is ill-omened. Yet even beneath an ill-omened star, a person chooses."
- "This Barrier is not faith but calculation. Only, at the end of the calculation, the name of a god remains."
- "Does a future left unspoken also become a sin?"
#Esoteric Monk
The esoteric monk is the combative face of Buddhism. Wrapping the body in sutra passages, mudra, mandala, and the image of Fudo Myoo, he goes into the Core Zone.
| Axis | RP Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Way of Emptiness / Compassion | He does not forget salvation even while cutting down yoma. |
| Way of Emptiness / Void | Seeing too many deaths, he loses the meaning of the sutra passage. |
| Way of Rites / Loyalty | He follows the commands of temple and master. The order of the warrior-monks. |
| Way of Mystery / Truth | Through mountain temples and natural austerity, he sees body and world as one. |
The core question of the esoteric monk is "Is a monk who has taken up the blade still a monk?"
Sample speech:
- "This fist is not anger. It is the protection of the Dharma."
- "Yoma, I have seen your suffering. Therefore I will stop here."
- "On the day I cut without chanting the sutra passage, I cease to be a monk."
#Pure Land Monk
The Pure Land Monk is a class that holds the name of Amida Buddha and the hearts of the common people. In combat he sustains cohesion; out of combat he binds people's lives together.
| Axis | RP Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Way of Emptiness / Compassion | He prays for the rebirth of all beings. The most natural direction. |
| Way of Emptiness / Void | When salvation fails, the nembutsu feels like an empty sound. |
| Way of Rites / Loyalty | He gives loyalty to the temple organization, the commoner community, and the cause of the uprising. |
| Way of Rites / Hegemony | A religious power that coerces others in "the name of the Buddha." |
The core question of the Pure Land Monk is "Can one protect a person by prayer alone?"
Sample speech:
- "Namu Amida Butsu. Call the name, and you are not alone."
- "Chant the nembutsu before you take up the spear. It is so that you do not hate."
- "If we trample people while speaking of the Buddha's compassion, what do we become?"
#Shugenja
The shugenja is a person of mountain and suffering. Shugendo is the height of the fusion of kami and Buddha, so it is hard to bind it to only one of the Confucian, Buddhist, or Xian.
| Axis | RP Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Buddhism | Austerity, enlightenment, self-sacrifice. |
| Shinto / Way of Mystery | Union with mountain, kami, waterfall, and nature. |
| Zen | The practice of realizing with the body rather than with words. |
| Confucianism | The discipline of master and lineage, of the community of practice. |
The core question of the shugenja is "For whom is my suffering?"
Sample speech:
- "The mountain does not answer. Instead, it teaches the way to endure."
- "This wound is not a price but a path."
- "I will carve myself away to open a path. After that, you walk it."
#Feng Shui Master
The feng shui master reads the order of the land. The order of Confucianism, the nature of the Way of Mystery, the law of Onmyodo, and the spirit-vein sense of xian thought all touch here.
| Axis | RP Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Way of Mystery / Truth | He respects the flow of the great earth and adjusts only as much as needed. |
| Way of Rites / Loyalty | He designs geography to protect castle and domain. |
| Way of Rites / Hegemony | He seeks to rule the land. He turns nature into a system of command. |
| Way of Emptiness / Compassion | He reads the spirit-veins to reduce the suffering of the people living on this land. |
The core question of the feng shui master is "To whom does the great earth belong?"
Sample speech:
- "This castle was not built on a strong place. It was built where it does not go against the flow."
- "Twist the spirit-veins, and somewhere a price comes due."
- "The land does not obey commands. One only persuades it."
#Wildlander and Arahitogami
The wildlander and the arahitogami are good supporting axes when you wish to understand 仙. Both touch a power older than the norms of human society.
| Class | Interpretation of Xian |
|---|---|
| wildlander | Through mountain, forest, kamuy, hunting, and survival, he knows an order beyond the human. |
| arahitogami | A being in which a kami borrows a human body. It stands between human rites and the majesty of nature. |
The wildlander's question is "Is a life outside civilization also a way?"
The arahitogami's question is "Can one bear, in human words, the responsibility for the flow of the gods?"
Sample speech:
- "The mountain did not permit it. That is why the path closed."
- "Your law ends at the edge of the village."
- "Before you say it is the will of the gods, see from whose mouth those words came."
#Scholar
The scholar is connected most directly to Confucianism. But the moment a scholar handles strategy, geography, prophecy, and medicine, he also meets other ways.
| Axis | RP Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Way of Rites / Loyalty | He uses knowledge for his lord and his domain. |
| Way of Rites / Hegemony | The self-righteousness of "I know best." He sees people as numbers and placements. |
| Way of Emptiness / Compassion | A strategy that reduces the harm of war; knowledge for the welfare of the people. |
| Way of Mystery / Truth | Through geography and Fortune, he understands the flow of the world. |
The core question of the scholar is "the responsibility of the one who commands while knowing."
Sample speech:
- "With this operation we win. Those words mean I can also see who will die."
- "A victory without cause is the seed of the next war."
- "Knowledge is not cleaner than a blade. It is only a blade that cuts from afar."
