#Yoma Scenes and d100 Tools
Contents
A kaidan scene begins not with "what comes out" but with "what turns strange first."
#Opening Fragment - The Black Table
The children of the village school made a table on every rainy day.
In the first column they wrote a place. Well, bridge, storehouse, grave, castle gate, mountain path. In the second column they wrote a sound. Weeping, laughter, drum, bell, water sound, footsteps that should not be there. In the third column they wrote a thing not to do. Do not look back, do not count, do not answer, do not say a name.
It was a game.
But one day, after a child filled in all three columns, he did not come home. On the table it was written:
Storehouse. Laughter. Do not count.
After that the adults could not burn the table. Each time they tried to burn it, one more child's laughter rose inside the storehouse.
#Scent - Three Columns Are Enough to Raise a Kaidan
A kaidan works even without a complicated setup. With only a place, a sign, and a taboo, you can begin the first scene. Then add the yoma's name, the Gate of the Spirit Realm, and a faction's involvement, and it becomes a campaign hook.
#Law - Quick Assembly Procedure
- Decide the place.
- Decide the strange sign.
- Decide the taboo.
- Decide the yoma's food.
- Decide the relationship with the gate.
- Decide one faction that will intervene.
#d100 Kaidan Seeds
| d100 | Seed |
|---|---|
| 01-05 | From inside the well comes the name of a living person, not a dead one. |
| 06-10 | The armor in a ruined castle turns to a different direction each night. |
| 11-15 | A waymark on the mountain path points to the same spot three times. |
| 16-20 | A name tag floated down the river burns without getting wet. |
| 21-25 | The old vessels in the storehouse are set out one more than the number of guests. |
| 26-30 | The shadow under the bridge greets you before the person does. |
| 31-35 | A drum sounds from a battlefield grave, but there is no drum. |
| 36-40 | The last verse of the song the children sing changes every day. |
| 41-45 | Each time the temple bell rings, one of the village dogs loses its voice. |
| 46-50 | Count the footwear before the mountain gate and one is always missing. |
| 51-55 | In every house that bought a fox mask from the market, they have the same dream. |
| 56-60 | On a rainy night, knock the door handle three times and the answer comes not from inside but from behind you. |
| 61-65 | The procession inside the old folding screen steps forward one pace a day. |
| 66-70 | A headless horse outside the castle gate searches for its master. |
| 71-75 | In the inn's guest register there is the name of someone who has not yet come. |
| 76-80 | A discarded doll grows larger in proportion to its owner's age. |
| 81-85 | At the end of the tunnel there is the same village once more. |
| 86-90 | Writing erased from the notice board is pasted on the door like a talisman the next day. |
| 91-95 | A corridor inside a video erases one room of the actual house. |
| 96-00 | A kaidan no one has ever made is already in everyone's memory. |
#Operation - The Truth Level of Clues
| Truth Level | Use |
|---|---|
| True | Points to the yoma's weakness or taboo. |
| Half True | The direction is right but the details are wrong. |
| False | Someone spread it. It may be the trace of a human faction rather than the yoma. |
| Dangerous Truth | A correct statement, but following it as is carries a heavy cost. |
Not all kaidan clues need to be real. But if every clue is false, the incident becomes unfair. Of three clues, always keep one true.
#The Gate of the Spirit Realm and Factions
In a quick incident, attach the gate and the faction as follows.
| d10 | Gate | Intervening Faction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Well | Hiei League |
| 2 | Ruined castle | Kagura Domain |
| 3 | Mountain path | shugenja, tengu |
| 4 | River | Ryugu emissary or kappa |
| 5 | Storehouse | Sakai Guild |
| 6 | Shrine | arahitogami, minor kami |
| 7 | Battlefield grave | onryo faction |
| 8 | Picture, book | Enryokan |
| 9 | Mask, pleasure quarter | Biu Mountain |
| 10 | Screen, post | modern yoma |
#Closing Line
With one place, one sign, and one taboo, the night is already a gate.
