#Yoma of the Village, Road, and Mountain

Contents

Village road mountain yokai, roadside grass, a shrine stone, and a long nonhuman shadow stretching uphill.

Yoma are not only on the battlefield. The night dwells also in the well where a child draws water, the pass a merchant crosses, and the hoe an old man uses every day.

#Opening Fragment - The Pass That Does Not Return

Cross the pass and the next village should appear.

But that day, the woodcutter returned to his own village. Thinking he had taken the wrong road, he crossed the pass again. His own village appeared once more. The third time he crossed, the villagers all looked at him with eyes that did not know him.

"I am the man who set out this morning."

When he said this, the oldest woman shook her head.

"Every morning, one man comes saying just that."

The woodcutter looked back. On top of the pass stood a tall monk. His face was hidden under a sedge hat and could not be seen. With his finger, the monk traced the road three times.

From that day on, those who crossed the pass did not ask for directions. For they feared the road might answer.

#Scent - Living-Space Yoma Are Small but Last Long

The yoma of the village, road, and mountain usually do not overturn the world like a Lord-grade boss. Instead they torment the same people on and on. The well water turns strange, the paddy eats human footprints, the mountain path will not return, and the tools in the storehouse shift place night after night.

For such yoma, repairing the relationship matters more than killing. Gather up the discarded tools, reconnect the broken rites, give a name to the nameless grave, and restore the mountain's taboo, and it can end without combat.

Forestkodama, kamaitachi, tanukiIf there is a trace of a human harming it first, the yoma's Domination +1.

#Operation - Start Small and Widen

Living-space yoma do not inflict great harm from the start. Grow them in three stages.

  1. Trivial anomaly: the taste of water, footprints, the position of a tool.
  2. Repeated harm: name loss, getting lost, missing livestock.
  3. Collapse of the community: suspicion, the halting of rites, the breaking of taboos.

Use this flow and the yoma incident becomes not a simple monster hunt but a story that lays bare the village's cracks.

#The Gate of the Spirit Realm

The gate of a living space hides in small habits. The hour water is drawn each day, the rite held every year, the custom of bowing twice before crossing the pass, the words of thanks before discarding an old tool. When such a habit breaks, the gate opens.

#Faction Responses

FactionResponse
Kagura DomainHandles even living-space yoma as a matter of military discipline and public order. Fast but rough.
Hiei LeagueStrong at rites, funerals, and restoring taboos. Easily earns the village's trust.
EnryokanListens to the yoma's demands and seeks conditions for coexistence. It takes a long time.
Biu MountainDeals with tanuki, yoko, and bakeneko, and seizes control of the village rumors.
Sakai GuildIntervenes with talismans, medicine, and tool repair. A commercial solution sometimes makes a bigger problem.

#Closing Line

A great yoma topples a castle, but a small yoma makes the village people suspect one another.
