#Modern Yoma Data
Contents
A modern yoma is not a copy of some famous work of fiction, but the workings of urban legends and media kaidan turned into a Konsei Reiyotan yoma.
#Opening Vignette - The 25 O'Clock Station
The last train had already gone.
Yet on the platform an arrival notice was displayed. Next train, 25:61. The destination was blank. Across the tracks a black mountain could be seen, and atop the mountain stood an old castle. There was no such mountain in the city.
The speaker came on.
"Those who alighted, please leave your name behind."
The passenger took a ticket from a pocket. The ticket had neither departure station nor arrival station. Instead, the passenger's own name was written on it.
He could not tear the ticket. It felt that if he tore it, the road home would tear as well.
#Scent - Modern Yoma Are Saved
Old kaidan grew weak when forgotten. Modern yoma are saved before they can be forgotten. Screenshots, video, comments, search terms, and location data become the new gravestone of the kaidan.
#Law - Common Tags for Modern Yoma
[Media Kaidan]
Effect: If two or more witnesses have seen the same kaidan, Domination +1 on its first appearance.
Weakness: If you find the first eyewitness account or the original medium and, rather than deleting it, "reveal its identity," Domination -1.
Taboo: If a per-kaidan taboo is broken, that person becomes the priority target in the next scene.
#Tactic Cost Basis
Modern-yoma squad tactics use the same cost rules as co squad tactics. The cost to activate a tactic is squad order cost + tactic additional cost. An additional cost of base means there is no Energy beyond the squad order cost. [Tactic:Stance] is released when the commander dismisses it or the squad moves, and if a tactic has its own separate release condition, that condition applies as well.
#Operation - Placement Order for Modern Yoma
For a modern yoma, the path of transmission comes before its stats. Place it in the order below.
- Decide the first eyewitness account.
- Decide the transmitting medium.
- Decide the taboo.
- Decide the original place.
- Decide why deletion does not solve it.
Following this order makes a modern yoma not a mere new monster but an incident in which a rumor moves.
#The Nameless Station (無名驛) - Elite
#Scent
The hour when the last train has already gone, and yet an arrival notice still hangs on the platform. Next train, the twenty-fifth hour, sixty-first minute; the destination box is blank. The station sign has had its letters all wiped away to a white surface, and across the tracks one can see a black mountain that is not in this city, and atop it an old castle. The fluorescent lights do not flicker but stay uniformly cold, and that very evenness is what unsettles a person.
The sound comes from the speaker. A crisp, measured announcement calls to a person, and tells those who would alight to leave their name behind. The ticket clutched in hand has neither departure nor arrival station, only one's own name written on it, so one cannot bring oneself to tear it. To tear it would seem to tear the road home as well. Each time the clock slips out of joint, the darkness at the end of the platform presses one step inward, and the boundary between the original station and the spirit realm grows ever more blurred.

Special: 25:61 - Time slips with each lull phase. After the third lull, if the original kaidan has not yet been found, the battlefield's Flank Zone turns into a Spirit Realm interface.
#The Smiling Mask (笑面) - Veteran
A Veteran-grade Media Kaidan squad. It appears as several smiling faces, masks, and wrong answers.
#Scent
Several approach with the same smile. A white mask with its mouth split to the ears, or a bare face fixed as if it wore one. They ask whether they are pretty, and while they wait for the answer the scissors clutched in hand cry faintly in the dark. They go first for the one who answers at once, and before the one who stays silent or asks back, the smile falters for a moment. The instant a whole group tilts its heads to the same angle all together is the signal of this kaidan.

Special: Taboo of the Answer - Against a target who immediately answers the question "Am I pretty?", first attack +1. No effect if they stay silent or ask back.
#The Corridor Inside the Screen (畵面廊) - Elite
#Scent
A corridor that should be behind the screen runs on out beyond it. A passage in footage you feel you have seen somewhere — the same door repeats at even intervals, no end is in sight, and at each spot where the image smears into coarse blur, a single span of depth cannot be read. Step inside, and the door you just passed through is gone; look back, and another door has filled its place.
The sound is out of joint. Footsteps catch up a beat late, and now and then are heard running backward as if rewound. From outside the frame, at an edge that should not be visible, a single white hand thrusts in and drags a person along. Where that hand is attached is never, in the end, caught on the screen. Until the cut-off opening scene is found and joined back on, the doors of this corridor open again no matter how often they are closed.

Special: Original Footage - If the original footage is found and the first cut-off scene is restored, it loses Erase One Door.
#The Bent Field (曲野) - Veteran
A Veteran-grade Place Kaidan squad. The whole field looks like the enemy, but by the rules it is operated as a single squad.
#Scent
At a glance it is just a broad field, but the moment you rest your gaze on it the grain begins to go awry. The grass lies down in one direction only, with no wind, and a single white line drawn across the distance sways slowly at the edge of sight. Whoever looks at that line head-on feels a dizziness as if the ground beneath the feet were bending, and the next step grows heavy. The harder one tries to put into clear words what one saw, the more the field calls to a person again, and so those who have seen it would sooner leave it only as a picture or in figures of speech.

Special: Taboo of Explanation - If someone who has seen this yoma tries to describe it exactly, it appears again in the next scene. It weakens if recorded as a drawing or a simile.
#The Empty Elevator (空箱) - Veteran
A Veteran-grade Space Kaidan squad. It looks like a single elevator, but the buttons, doors, mirror, and floor indicator move together.
#Scent
When the door opens, an empty car with no one in it waits for a person. One's own reflection in the mirror follows a beat late, and the number on the floor indicator lights up at a button no one has ever pressed. Step inside and the door closes smoothly, but the place it arrives at is never the floor that should be there. Whoever speaks aloud the forbidden floor stands, before he knows it, alone in a corridor he has never once seen, with only the sound of a door closing behind him fading away.

Special: Taboo of the Floor - A target who speaks the forbidden floor number aloud, next move check -1. This effect vanishes if the origin of the floor number is found.
#The Third Reply (三返書) - Minion Squad
A Minion-grade Media Kaidan squad. Texts, comments, transcripts, and forwarded messages move as one bundle.
#Scent
At first it is a single short line of text you feel you have seen somewhere. Each time it is copied and carried along, it goes awry by one letter, and the same sentence returns from every direction in the same voice. The sentence sticks fast in the head of the one who read it and will not come loose, and the one who passed it on to another verbatim finds the next step somehow thrown off. Lay the first text and the third-altered text side by side, and only then does it come clear what was added and what was erased.

Special: Original-Text Comparison - If the first post, the first transcript, and the third variant are laid side by side, Cohesion -2.
#The White Tall Shadow (白長影) - Elite
#Scent
Seen from far off it is a white figure stretched abnormally tall. The distance is always the same; draw near and it withdraws by just that much, flee and it follows by just that much. Its outline is not clear but blurred like a photograph out of focus, and that very blur is what keeps the eye from looking away. When a single white line stretches out long behind one who has been left alone, it means the thing has already come close.
There is almost no sound. Only the footsteps of one who has fallen from the group ring out distinctly, while the voices of the companions sound strangely far away. To whoever tries to copy its form exactly onto paper, it returns the next night as a sharper shape, and so those who have seen it record it only in a rough map marking the place, or in figures of speech. The very attempt to see it exactly summons this being.

| Out of Focus | [Technique] | reservation 2/improvised 3 | 2d10+Fate >= enemy attack | The hit is negated. After success, infiltration state | 1 breath |
Special: Do Not Draw It Exactly - If this yoma's form is left as a concrete drawing, Domination +1 in the next scene. It weakens if recorded indirectly, as a simile, a symbol, or a positional map.
#The Unbroken Call (不切聲) - Veteran
A Veteran-grade Voice Kaidan squad. A ringtone, silence, and a delayed voice move within the same call.
#Scent
A ring sounds, yet the phone to answer it is nowhere to be seen. A call one thought had ended comes back to life a beat late, and from beyond the receiver, after a long silence, a voice flows out calling one's own name. That voice somehow resembles one's own. The ringtone clings most stubbornly to the one who ignored an earlier call, and however thoroughly the call log is erased, it does not cut off. Until who placed the first call is brought to light, this ring does not stop.

| Silent Answer | [Tactic:Kata] | base | 2d10 >= target Defense | On a hit, instead of damage, 1 target cannot say its own name for 1 breath. | 1 round |
Special: The Unanswered Call - Against a person who ignored the phone in the warning scene before combat, first attack +1. Erasing the call log does not resolve it; you must reveal who called first.
#The Gate of the Spirit Realm and Factions
Most of a modern yoma's gates are media passages. Yet their roots can still touch the old gates. The nameless station is a modern form of the pass that does not return, and the corridor inside the screen has the same structure as a castle gate that will not open.
| Lineage | Modern-Yoma Response |
|---|---|
| Kagura lineage | Tries on-site lockdown and record deletion. Slow to reveal identity. |
| Hiei lineage | Looks for the grudge and the taboo. Weak against media manipulation. |
| Enryokan lineage | Tracks the original and its variants. Becomes endangered by viewing too much. |
| Biu Mountain lineage | Uses the anonymous rumor network most skillfully. |
#Closing Line
A modern yoma comes even when you do not walk the night road. Because someone has saved its name.
