#Lore (世界觀)

Contents

A Sengoku era overrun by yoma. A world of blades and monsters.

#Scent — About This World

#The Opening of the Sengoku

The time is Sengoku (戰國). The authority of the emperor has long since collapsed, and daimyo (大名) across the land shed blood for rule over the realm. Ashigaru (足軽) die in the front ranks, samurai charge enemy commanders with blades in hand, and shinobi seek throats from the shadows of night.

Yet the chaos of this Sengoku age is not only a war among humans.

#The Gates to the Spirit Realm Open

When the blood of war sinks into the earth, gates to the Spirit Realm (靈界) open. Oni (鬼) descend from the mountains, tengu (天狗) watch from the sky, and the grudges of the war dead become onryo (怨靈) that wander the battlefield. Starving gaki (餓鬼) tear into corpses, while yoko (妖狐) take human shape and move between camps.

To answer these supernatural threats, daimyo hire onmyoji (陰陽師), ask esoteric monks (密教僧) to perform exorcisms, and soothe soldiers' fear with the prayers of Pure Land monks (淨土僧). War is now human against human and human against yoma at once.

The gates to the Spirit Realm do not release only yoma. The Spirit Realm is a dimension where the human world's past, present, and future all exist at once — where time itself flows differently. The moment a gate opens, famous arms and treasures begin to flow backward through time. Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures (靈界鬼物). A sword that a future master smith will forge, a jinbaori that a future hero will wear, a formation manual that a future strategist will use; all appear in the hands of samurai in this era before they have even been made. Cracks in time take the form of masterworks. → Spirit Realm Wandering Treasures details

#Gunpowder and Foreigners

Foreigners from Nanban (南蠻) brought a new force: gunpowder. Teppo (鐵砲) pierce even oni hide, and cannons bring down castle walls. Some daimyo eagerly adopt this foreign technology; others reject it and cling to tradition.

#In the Middle of It All

Players stand in the middle of this chaos. You can be a warlord acting under a daimyo's command, a ronin who has lost his lord, an exorcist monk from a mountain temple, a gunslinger from a foreign land, or a shinobi ranging across the battlefield. You can lead a small elite force, hunt yoma, bring down an enemy daimyo, or exploit the power of yoma to seek rule over the realm.

#Law — Rules of the World

#Era

  • Era: late Sengoku period ~ Azuchi-Momoyama. The age when Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu are active. One difference from historical fact: yoma are real.
  • Technology Level: katana, yari, bows, teppo. Armor is tosei gusoku (當世具足). Stone castles.
  • Social Structure: a status order of warriors, farmers, artisans, and merchants. Monks are a separate class. Shinobi are unofficial.

#Yoma (妖魔)

  • Spirit Realm (靈界): a spiritual world overlaid on the human world. It is normally unseen, but gates open where war/death/anger are concentrated.
  • Types of Yoma: oni (violence), tengu (surveillance/arrogance), onryo (grudge), gaki (hunger), yoko (deception), kumo (capture), nue (chaos). See Yoma Bestiary.
  • Yoma and Humans: most yoma are hostile to humans. Some (yoko, tengu) can be negotiated with. Hanyo (半妖) are beings caught between the two worlds.

#Supernatural Systems

  • Onmyodo (陰陽道): shikigami summoning, barriers, sorcery, prophecy. The foundation of the Onmyoji.
  • Esoteric Buddhism (密教): mantras, mudra methods, vajra. Exorcism and physical enhancement. The foundation of the Esoteric Monk.
  • Pure Land Buddhism (淨土宗): faith in Amida Buddha. Morale maintenance and fear resistance. The foundation of the Pure Land Monk.
  • Feng Shui (風水): controlling the flow of earth veins. Terrain alteration. The foundation of the Feng Shui Master.

#Scale of War

  • Scale of This Game: not a large-scale battle, but tactical engagements by small units. 2~4 protagonists + several squads vs a swarm of yoma or an enemy unit.
  • Typical Scenarios: yoma hunts, fortress assaults and defenses, wagon escorts, assassination prevention, barrier defense, Spirit Realm incursions.
