#Scent — The One Who Dissects Yoma
If Enryokan "observes and records" yoma, Yorijin goes one step further. They cut yoma open with a blade, take them apart by hand, classify them, and reassemble them. They apply the natural philosophy brought from Nanban: anatomy, taxonomy, and mechanism. To Yorijin, an oni horn is not "something terrifying," but "biological tissue with hardness 7 and spiritual conductivity 0.3."
Yorijin's workshop keeps yoma parts in order: tengu feathers, kappa plates, fragments of an oni core, and condensed Konryu fluid. They combine these to make tools. A fan made from tengu feathers raises wind, and a mirror made from fragments of a kappa plate reflects illusion arts. The same is true on the battlefield. When a yoma falls, Yorijin tears parts from the corpse and makes improvised tools.
The Hiei League defines Yorijin as "a blasphemer who does not revere yoma," and Ikko-ikki brands them "a heretic who bargains with yoma." Yorijin does not care. "The age of facing yoma with superstition and prayer is over." To Yorijin, exorcism is an unscientific rite, and faith is the abandonment of understanding. Only observation and experiment reach truth, even if the process crosses human ethics.
- Recommended Weapons: dissection knife (special short weapon), Nanban gun (also for observation), none (tool creation is the real work)
- Recommended Schools: none (independent "Yorijin studies")
- Recommended Faction Traits: Enryokan extremists, Sakai Nanban academic circle, independent researcher
#Law — Trait List
#1st Dan: Yoma Analysis (妖魔解析) [aptitude]
[aptitude] Yoma Analysis (妖魔解析)
Effect: Scientific analysis ability against yoma. Constant effects:
- Automatically identify the weaknesses of all yoma appearing on the battlefield (GM immediately reveals weakness information).
- Automatically check yoma Wounds, Defense, and special techniques at battle start (Wisdom >= 10 check unnecessary).
- Can share weakness information with all allies (1 Energy, free action).
- Cannot use exorcism techniques ("I do not use unscientific means").
#3rd-Dan Class Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dissection (解體) | [Kata] | 2 | 1/round | Anatomical attack against 1 adjacent yoma. Wisdom+Finesse >= target Defense. On success, Wounds -2 + gain 1 "dissection part." Even on failure, gain 1 additional weakness clue. |
| Nanban Observer (南蠻觀測器) | [aptitude] | — | — | Can view exact Wounds/Energy values of all units within 2 zones. Also detect hidden/infiltrating units (Wisdom >= 11). "Even if you hide, heat detection catches you." |
| Taxonomy Lecture (分類學講義) | [Kata] | 2 | 1/lull | Brief all allies on current battlefield yoma weaknesses. Briefed allies gain a +1 bonus when attacking those yoma until combat ends. |
#5th-Dan Class Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Improvised Yoma Tool (卽席妖具) | [Kata] | 3 | 1/round | Spend a "dissection part" to craft a yoma tool during combat. Choose 1 from the tool list (crafting spends 1 breath, and you are Defenseless during it): [Wind Fan] force 1 enemy to move, [Reflecting Mirror] reflect 1 sorcery, [Ghost-Fire Bullet] next shot +3 Wounds, [Poison Smoke] everyone in the zone Defense -2. |
| Weak-Point Snipe (弱點狙擊) | [Kata] | 3 | 1/round | Against a yoma whose weakness is identified, roll 2d10+Wisdom+Finesse >= Defense. [Pierce 3] (weak point exposed). On success, 3 Wounds. "Joint gaps, spiritual fault lines, exposed core: aim exactly there." |
| Biological Analysis Report (生體分析報告) | [aptitude] | — | — | Each time you gain parts through Dissection, the GM reveals 1 hidden technique of that yoma type. Afterward, you teach allies how to counter that technique: Defense +2 against that technique. |
#7th-Dan Advanced Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete Dissection (完全解體) | [Kata] | 5 | 1/combat | Against 1 target yoma, Elite-grade or lower, roll 2d10+Wisdom+Stratagem >= Defense+5. On success, instant death. Fully disassemble the yoma. On failure, 1 Wound + 2 parts. "If you fully understand the structure, taking it apart is simple." |
| Yoma Chimera (妖魔合成獸) | [Kata] | 4 | 1/combat | Spend 3 parts. During combat, synthesize and summon 1 artificial yoma (Minion-grade, Wounds 3, Defense 13). Lasts 1 round. It follows Yorijin's commands. |
| Reverse-Engineered Barrier (逆設計結界) | [Kata] | 3 | 1/round | Spend 1 part. Create a barrier dedicated to that yoma type. Only yoma of that type cannot pass through it + on contact, Wounds -1. "A wall that turns yoma structure against them." |
#9th-Dan Advanced Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand System of Yoma (妖魔大系) | [aptitude] | — | — | Yorijin's research reaches completion. Attack +2 against all yoma; Dissection success rate +3. Whenever you gain dissection parts, always gain 2. Allies' weakness-attack bonus rises to +2. "I have classified every yoma in the world." |
| Forbidden Self-Transplant (禁斷の自家移植) | [Kata] | 5 | 1/session | Transplant 2 parts into your own body. You can use 1 special technique of the transplanted yoma for 1 combat. However, after transplantation, at each lull roll Physique>=13. On failure, Wounds -2 (rejection). "Scientists always experiment on their own bodies." |
#Extreme Strengths
- Automatic yoma weakness reveal: dramatically raises the whole party's ability to answer yoma. Information is power.
- Dissection part economy: the longer the battle, the more parts pile up and the more tools appear. Resource-management play.
- Tool creation during combat: make the right tool for the situation on the spot. Flexible response.
- Complete Dissection: instant death against Elite-grade or lower yoma. Excellent for clearing guards of Lord-grade yoma.
- Ally synergy: weakness sharing raises the whole party's firepower.
#Extreme Weaknesses
- Automatic hostility from Hiei League: treated as a heretic by all faith factions. Enter a temple/shrine and hostility begins immediately.
- Defenseless while crafting tools: when using Improvised Yoma Tool, cannot act for 1 breath + Defenseless(-4). A guard is essential.
- Cannot use exorcism: rejects exorcism techniques as "unscientific." The only answer to spiritual beings is physical dissection.
- Rejects faith healing: refuses healing from Arahitogami and Mikkyo monks as "superstition." Excludes self from allies' healing targets.
- Temptation to dissect humans: the impulse to apply yoma-dissection logic to humans as well. The extreme of Truth leads to "anything, if it is for understanding."
#Typical Breath Pattern (5th Dan, Dissection Focus)
Count 12 — First breath:
Dissection(2) + share weakness information(1) = 3
→ yoma 2 Wounds + 1 part + allied weakness-attack bonus
Count 8 — Second breath:
Improvised Yoma Tool(3, spend part) = 3
→ tool creation (Defenseless for 1 breath; ally guard required)
Count 5 — Third breath:
Weak-Point Snipe(3) = 3
→ 3 Wounds (weakness bonus applied)
Remaining Energy: 11 - 3 - 3 - 3 = 2 (store)
#Zone Bonuses
| Zone | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Front Zone | Dissection targets are close, but direct combat power is low, so it is dangerous. Guard required. |
| Rear Zone | Safe tool-crafting space. Analyze the whole battlefield with the observer. Home position. |
| Core Zone | Entry only by forced Breakthrough. There are many strong yoma to dissect, but survival is difficult. |
| Outside Zone | Noncombat research. Rarely goes there in combat. |
#Three Ways and Six Hearts Conflict
Yorijin's central drama is madness at the end of knowledge.
- "Can understanding and reverence coexist?" The more Yorijin dissects yoma, the more they admire the beautiful structure. But dissection is destruction. Is it right to destroy in order to understand?
- "Does science have an ethical limit?" What if the logic of yoma dissection is applied to humans? To hanyo? To Arahitogami? The thought seeps in: "Humans, too, can be understood by dissection."
- Conflict with Enryokan: Enryokan says, "Observe, but do not intervene." Yorijin says, "If you do not intervene, you cannot understand." A philosophical clash between observation and experiment.
- Collision with faith factions: When a Mikkyo monk exorcises with a sutra, Yorijin asks, "Explain why that works." If the answer is "the power of Buddha," it is insufficient for Yorijin.
- Forbidden Self-Transplant: putting yoma parts into your own body. If hanyo have "yoma blood from birth," Yorijin "becomes yoma by choice." Drama at the moment of crossing that boundary.
"God made it? No. If there is structure, there is a blueprint. If there is a blueprint, it can be copied. If it can be copied, there is no need for god."
