#Ronin Sample: Hayame (疾風, "Gale")

Contents

"The name is false. There is no past. Only the blade is fast."

Hayame, a wandering ronin, complete upper body from head to waist, travel cloak loose over one shoulder, hand near a plain katana grip, tired eyes turned sideways, road dust.

#1st Dan — Like the Wind

#Scent

No lord, no house. She does not say where she came from. In taverns she pays for food with her blade, and on battlefields she appears like wind and vanishes like wind. When she enters the Core Zone, she returns alone even from places that are hard to escape.

#Background — How the Adventure Began

"Hayame" is not her real name. Those who know her real name are dead, were killed, or do not know.

She first gripped a katana at the burned remains of a border village in summer. A dispute between local clans burned the village to the ground, and only one thirteen-year-old girl survived by hiding in a well. The next morning, when she picked up a masterless ninja-to from beneath the collapsed dojo floor, the girl decided to abandon her name. If she had a name, someone would come looking; if someone came looking, she would lose something again.

For five years after that she wandered without a teacher. Border mountain roads, villages behind battlefields, and areas around spirit veins (靈脈) where yoma often appeared. She learned swordsmanship not in a dojo, but by surviving. Not too fast, not too slow, like wind.

The name "ronin Hayame" was given during a bandit-suppression job on the Izumiyama road. When five guards fell during a merchant escort, she remained alone and cut down eight. The merchant asked, "What is your name?" She answered, "Write that I was as fast as gale (疾風)." From then on, she was Hayame.

#5th Dan — Nameless Swordmaster

#Scent

She has wandered the Sengoku and passed through dozens of battles. She enjoys combat in the Core Zone. Without a school, she builds her own sword: Self-Taught Style. Background route: Wild Sense (B), reading danger by instinct.

#Background — How She Came This Far

For three years after 1st dan, Hayame stood on seventeen battlefields. The employer was different each time: daimyo, merchant, temple, and sometimes a village militia facing yoma. The condition was one thing: advance payment, five days' worth, cash. No deferred payment. Trust is a luxury.

During that time, two people entered and left Hayame's life. The first was a young commander of Kagura Domain, a man named Masamune. When they faced five ko-oni together on a border bridge, his immovable stance completed Hayame's ambush. As they parted, Masamune said, "Let us meet again someday." Hayame did not answer. She only turned her eyes to his back.

The second was Kage, a shinobi. When assigned to the same job and forced to cover each other's blades at the perimeter, the two matched timing without words. After that, they met three more times. Each time they met, there were more things they did not ask.

Self-Taught Style is not a school. A school is inheritance, and inheritance is a name. Self-Taught Style is simply the accumulation of "how to use this blade." Hayame had fast-decision armor fitted to her. She chose the ability to move more within one breath over Defense. She chose the Wild Sense route before thirty, on the day she avoided a yoma pack's ambush by scent alone. She can now detect like a beast as naturally as breathing.

#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — "Muyeonggaek"

#Scent

A legendary swordswoman. No one knows her true name. When she appears on a battlefield, the enemy Front Zone collapses; when she enters the Core Zone, no one comes out alive. Her epithet means "faster than shadow": Muyeonggaek (無影客).

Renown Title: Class Capstone — Shadowless Guest (無影客). Ignores all Domination/Breakthrough. Always initiative rank 1.

#Background — How She Earned Her Renown Title

Hayame became a legend in a single night.

The night Tatarigami of the Hannyakai raided Izumo Shrine, binding priests and dozens of pilgrims to the altar and preparing a great rite. Kagura Domain's regular army was still five hundred ri away, and the esoteric monk corps that should have arrived as guards had strayed from the route. The first person to reach that shrine was a passing ronin: Hayame.

That night, she entered the Core Zone and moved for three hours. According to the testimony of survivors, "only wind was visible." Only she knows what moved her. Only the result was recorded: all pilgrims survived, priests rescued, Tatarigami's retainers annihilated, Tatarigami's main body avoided (it could not be sealed).

After that night, people began calling her Muyeonggaek (無影客). It means "faster than shadow." In truth, it is closer to meaning one who leaves no shadow. In the Core Zone, the places she passes hold only enemy corpses; no trace of her remains.

When she received a Renown Title, she chose the class capstone Shadowless Guest (無影客). Even at 10th dan, she did not take a name. She refused daimyo and estates alike. She still wanders. But now, on any battlefield, when someone sees her for the first time, an old commander says: "Run before that woman draws her blade."

Her only remaining words: "I have no name. Does the wind have one?"
