#1st Dan — Child of the Mountains
#Scent
A young hunter of Ainu blood. He belongs to no society. He uses neither armor nor sword, but catches bears with bare hands. He believes kamuy, the gods of nature, dwell in his body.
#Background — How the Adventure Began
Aterui was born in a mountain village of Ezochi (蝦夷地). He is one of the last generation to know Ainu traditions. At thirteen, he performed Iyomante, the rite of taking a bear and sending it to the gods, and in that rite he felt kamuy enter him.
In the year he turned nineteen, his village was forced to move by the expanding borders of Japanese settlers. The village elders complied, and Aterui left south alone. The reason was simple: if there is something that must be fought, fighting it alone is still the way of kamuy.
On his way south, he first encountered yoma in a border village. When one Shurado retainer attacked the village, he broke its neck with his bare hands. The villagers thanked him, and instead of answering, he took off his bear-tooth necklace and hung it around the youngest child's neck. "May kamuy guard you."

#5th Dan — Warrior of Kamuy
#Scent
A wildlander whose name has begun to be known even in southern Japan. Kagura Domain tried to hire him as a border guardian, but he refused. He does not believe in the concept of contracts, because nature does not contract.
#Background — How He Came This Far
After 1st dan, Aterui volunteered for yoma hunts in the border mountains for four years. During that time, he defeated five oni, eighteen ko-oni, and three Tatarigami retainers with his bare hands. In the third year, he completed the Kamuy's Blessing aptitude: during combat, his Defense temporarily becomes the sum of 10 + Physique + Courage. It is a phenomenon where divine protection physically wraps his body.
In the fourth year, he introduced the Iyomante technique into combat. It applies the rite he used while hunting in the mountains to battle, inflicting fear on large yoma. At the first demonstration, one oni fell into fear and began attacking its own companions.
Around this time, Aterui happened to meet Ichi, an autonomous automaton. Ichi asked him, "Are you human?" Aterui answered, "I am kamuy." Ichi tilted his head and said, "Then what am I?" That conversation began a long friendship between them. Machine and wildlander: both stood outside human society.

#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — "Aterui, King of the Earth"

A legend carried from Ezochi to the southern end of the realm. Oni flee when he passes. The Yamato court tried to give him an official title, but he refused. Renown Title: Class Capstone — King of the Earth.
#Background — How He Earned the Renown Title
Aterui's legend was completed in the stopping of the Hokuriku great advance. When a great yoma of Hannyakai tried to drive south through Hokuriku, Aterui waited for it alone halfway up the mountains. For two days, he fought the great yoma with only bare hands and makiri. He could not kill the great yoma, but it abandoned its southward advance and returned to the mountains. In the mountains, kamuy were on Aterui's side.
When the Yamato court tried to grant him the Renown Title King of the Earth, he refused, saying, "Names are given by kamuy." But the common people began calling him "King of the Earth" on their own, and that spread before the court's title did.
Aterui now lives in the mountains between Ezochi and Kagura Domain. Bears and wolves are always around him. His people call him kamuy, or simply "elder brother."
