#Outsider Samples (異邦人見本) — 3 Types
Contents
People who do not belong to this age: Modern Person / Heroic Spirit / Celestial. Each fell into this age in a different way. Through the Adaptation (適應) mechanic, they borrow traits from other classes.
Narrative Axis: An outsider's story is a question of belonging. Why are they in this age (1st Dan), how did they become part of this age (5th Dan), and how did they become legend (10th Dan)?
#1. Modern Person — Takagi Sayaka
"I thought they meant a Chinese-style doctor."
#Scent
A 3rd-year student in the main course of Tokyo Medical University. One night on her way home from school, her train was caught in a Spirit Realm vibration and fell into the Sengoku age. In her bag were several textbooks, a first-aid kit, a portable flashlight, and one knife: a fruit knife bought at a convenience store.
#Background
#1st Dan — How the Adventure Began
Sayaka fell into a border village of Kagura Domain. For the first two days, she could not understand what had happened. There were no electric lights and no phones. People treated her as a "foreigner" because of her clothing, and within half an hour she accepted that she was in the past. (Like a medical student, she was logical.) On the third day, when a child in the village collapsed with a high fever, Sayaka used an antipyretic and saved the child. In that moment, Sayaka learned that she could be useful in this age.
The villagers called her a "Chinese-style doctor" because she carried things that did not exist in Japan, and Sayaka accepted the title for the time being. With modern medical knowledge, she could perform simple treatment. Deep trauma was different. She began formally learning the Medicine skill.
#5th Dan — How She Came This Far
After 1st Dan, Sayaka worked for four years as a field doctor of Kagura Domain. During that time, she used Adaptation three times: converting the noncombat skill "medical knowledge" into this age's combat-usable Medicine. She understood the way Adaptation worked like this: "I have to rewrite what I have in the language of this age."
In the third year, she asked herself for the first time whether she wanted to return to the age she had lived in. She postponed the answer. Sayaka still keeps her medical-school bag, but she opens it less often.
#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — How She Gained a Renown Title
Sayaka's legend was completed during the Great Shikoku Plague. While Miko's (arahitogami's) healing light handled the spiritual side, Sayaka suppressed the physical side of the plague with modern medicine + this age's medicinal materials + sanitation management. Through their cooperation, twelve villages in Shikoku survived. After the plague, Sayaka is no longer called a "Chinese-style doctor", but the "foreign woman physician."

"A medical student fell into the Sengoku age. Ridiculous. Ridiculous, but interesting."
#2. Heroic Spirit — Karna (कर्ण)
"I am not a person of this age. But this bow is here."
#Scent
A hero from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata. Son of the sun god Surya, slain by Arjuna in the Battle of Kurukshetra. He was summoned into this age through a gap opened by the Spirit Realm gate. His relic, the Vijaya bow, manifested in this age, and he remains here with that bow as his anchor.
#Background
#1st Dan — How the Adventure Began
When Karna arrived in this age, he already knew what he was, because he had been summoned while retaining the memories of the Mahabharata. His mission was to stand on this age's battlefields together with the Vijaya bow. Immediately after the summoning, he spoke to those around him in Karna's language, Sanskrit. Fortunately, the local scholar Sosui helped with partial communication.
His first battle was a yoma-clearing operation on the border of Kagura Domain. With the Vijaya bow, Karna brought down three oni, each with a single shot. No Japanese archer could match either its range or accuracy. He became an object of awe to the people of this age, but he described himself only as a "visitor" from Tenjiku (天竺).
#5th Dan — How He Came This Far
After 1st Dan, Karna spent four years crossing the battlefields of this age. His Adaptation differs from ordinary Adaptation: he does not learn techniques from this age, but translates techniques from his own age into the language of this age. Some of Tenjiku's battle methods were transmitted in forms the people of this age could understand.
Around that time, Karna revealed that he carried Vasavi Shakti, the one-use divine spear received from Indra, in reserve. He has not used it yet. "Until an opponent worthy of this age appears." (It is Chekhov's gun.)
#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — How He Gained a Renown Title
Karna's legend was completed in single combat against a great majin of the Hannyakai. At the height of the Edoku Cataclysm, when one great majin broke through Kagura Domain's barriers and marched to the main castle, Karna stood before it alone. At last, he threw Vasavi Shakti. The one-use divine spear pierced the great majin's core, and with it, Karna's age anchor as a heroic spirit weakened. The great majin fell, and Karna was also somewhat diminished.
After that, Karna remains in this age only through the Vijaya bow. No one knows when he will return. As a heroic spirit, he is complete, but the people of this age record him as the Hero of Tenjiku.

"You of this age will not know my story. Even so, we stand beneath the same sky."
#3. Celestial — Uzuki (卯月)
"I am descending. I cannot stop."
#Scent
A celestial (天人) descended from the heavens. She originally held the role of mercy in the heavenly realm, but out of compassion for the suffering of the human world, she chose descent. Descent advances at each even rank-up, not every time Divine Authority is used. Divine Authority is a 5-use miracle with no natural recovery, and divine nature disappears when Divine Authority reaches 0.
#Background
#1st Dan — How the Adventure Began
Uzuki manifested in this age just after the Spirit Realm gate opened. Her first form was a pillar of light, a woman with a holy aura. The village where she first set foot was suffering from both plague and yoma miasma, and by instinct she used one celestial Divine Authority to purify the zone. What she lost in exchange was not an attribute, but 1 use of Divine Authority that would not return.
The second Divine Authority was used on a battlefield when a yoma curse began to spread. Uzuki purified the zone again, and the falling ashigaru squad gained time to retreat.
For the first time, Uzuki understood the weight of her own choice. Descent cannot be reversed. Divine Authority does not cut attributes away, but once spent, it does not naturally return.
#5th Dan — How She Came This Far
After 1st Dan, Uzuki wandered this age for three years. She used Divine Authority two more times, and the descending curve also advanced. Her overwhelming first light weakened, but the people of this age accepted her as an in-between being, neither god nor human. The heroic spirit Karna told her a Tenjiku proverb: "A god's one step is a human lifetime." Uzuki heard it and cried for a long time. For the first time, she properly understood the meaning of her choice.
In the fourth year, Uzuki settled in Kagura Domain. Miko the arahitogami told her, "You are descending. I am ascending. Perhaps one day we will meet in the same place." Uzuki nodded.
#10th Dan (Tatsujin) — How She Gained a Renown Title
Uzuki's legend was completed by the use of her last Divine Authority. In the final moment of the Edoku Cataclysm, just before the Hannyakai's great majin fell, it cast a final curse over all of Kagura Domain. Uzuki used her final Divine Authority to purify the zone, then fixed that purification into this age's legend through the Tatsujin Renown Title Ascension.
Now she is a celestial who did not return to the heavenly realm. She lives with humans in a village of Kagura Domain, choosing to remain in this age rather than the heavens. People call her Renown Title Ascension, but for Uzuki it names remaining in the present world, not returning.

"There was a reason when I descended. I cannot remember it now, but that is fine. It was enough."
Three outsiders. People with three different ages. And in this Sengoku age, all of them became human.
