|---|---|
| Barrier HP | irrelevant (the domain synchronizes with the forest) |
| weakening | irrelevant |
| domain morale | not applicable (the domain sinks into stillness) |
| resident reaction | quiet resignation |
| relationship with the forest | unity — the domain becomes the boundary of Black Rope |
| result | campaign ends or resumes at a macroscopic scale |

#3. Experience and PC Growth
#3.1 PC Dan at Chapter End
- Standard: early 4th dan (Chapter 2 starts mid 2nd dan → early 4th dan).
- Good: late 4th dan (with active RP and combat participation).
- Fatal: late 3rd dan (if the chapter fails).
#3.2 Three Ways and Six Hearts Tendency Summary
Each PC's Three Ways and Six Hearts shifts through accumulated choices in the chapter. Below are the main tendencies by route.
#PCs Who Chose the Hegemony Route
| Axis | Tendency | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 覇 | +2 | solved through combat |
| 慈 | -1 | forced disappearance |
| 眞 | ±0 | depends on circumstances |
#PCs Who Chose the Truth·Compassion Route
| Axis | Tendency | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 眞 | +1.5 | pursuit of truth |
| 慈 | +1 | performed empathy |
| 覇 | -0.5 | avoided combat |
#PC Who Chose the Void Route (Sacrifice)
| Axis | Tendency | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 虛 | +3 | yielded their place |
| 慈 | +1 | saved another |
| remaining axes | ±0 | existing state maintained |
#Void Route (Non-Sacrifice PCs)
| Axis | Tendency | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 慈 | +1 | accepted a companion |
| 忠 | +0.5 | duty toward a companion |
| 虛 | +0.5 | indirectly felt the sacrifice |
#3.3 Possibility of Confirming a Heart(心)
At the end of Chapter 2, a particular PC may be able to confirm a Heart(心). Conditions:
- one axis has shifted +3 or higher.
- behavior on that axis continued for 3 or more sessions.
- See the core Three Ways and Six Hearts confirmation rule.
On confirmation, that PC unlocks 1 unique Heart ability. See the core rules for details.
#4. Domain Events — 1~2 Weeks After Chapter End
#4.1 Immediate Events (Day of Return)
#Event 1. Resident Reaction
Resident reaction when the PCs return. It differs by route.
| Route | Reaction |
|---|---|
| Hegemony | cheers. The lord gives a speech. A celebration can be held. |
| Truth·Compassion | suspicion. Fear toward the new alliance. The lord explains carefully. |
| Void | silence. The absence of one person. The lord proposes a rite to remember the dead. |
#Event 2. Onmyoji Reaction
- Gensho's analysis: He hears the full story from the returned PCs and writes a ritual prayer.
- On the Truth·Compassion route: he analyzes the Black Rope-colored Barrier thread. "This thread will strengthen the Barrier... but it will also change what our Barrier is."
- On the Void route: he engraves the sacrifice PC's name in the Barrier's "guardian roster."
#4.2 Weekly Events (Within 1 Week)
#Event 3. Grip Mother Visit (Truth·Compassion Route Only)
If the Truth·Compassion route succeeds, Grip Mother visits the domain within 1 week. Her first visit is late at night and quiet. Gensho senses her first.
- Purpose of Visit: greeting, thanks, confirming the promise.
- Domain Reaction: wary at first. Acceptance grows over time.
- Interaction: reunion with PCs. Kokujo-ryu teaching rite can begin.
#Event 4. Sacrifice PC Resonance (Void Route Only)
If the sacrifice PC has become the forest's new mother, a resonance phenomenon occurs in the domain within 1 week.
- A black star pattern appears at one point on the Barrier.
- When touched, the sacrifice PC's voice can be heard.
- "It's all right. I am here. As long as you remember me, I will not disappear."
- Domain morale +1. Onmyoji weakening -0.5 (recovery through resonance).
#Event 5. Daimo Remnant Attack (Hegemony Route Only)
On the Hegemony route, if some of Daimo's remnant chains survive, they can attack the domain within 1 week.
- Attack scale: mid-grade. Domain Barrier HP -5.
- Repel difficulty: medium.
- Response: defend with squad slot A. Can be handled without PCs.
#4.3 Long-Term Events (2~4 Weeks)
#Event 6. Kokujo-ryu Teaching Begins
If the teaching requirements are met (see 22-02 for details), teaching begins. Duration 30 days. 1 onmyoji or PC with Chivalric Love 3+.
#Event 7. Spirit Realm Intelligence Alliance Entry
If the Truth·Compassion route succeeds, one or both of Grip Mother and Kokujo Daimo are registered in 8 Spirit Realm Intelligences — Negotiable Others. They can reappear in the later campaign.
#5. Conditions for Entering Chapter 3 (Kyoukan)
#5.1 Standard Entry (Recommended)
Enter Chapter 3 normally if the following conditions are met.
- [ ] Chapter 2 ending route confirmed.
- [ ] Barrier HP 45 or higher.
- [ ] weakening 3 or lower.
- [ ] at least 2 PCs alive.
- [ ] at least 1 Kokujo-ryu core held.
#5.2 Difficult Entry
- [ ] Barrier HP 30~44.
- [ ] weakening 4.
- [ ] 1 PC absent (sacrifice or settling).
Under these conditions, insert the "onmyoji crisis" subplot early in Chapter 3 Session 9. The onmyoji temporarily collapses, and the Domain Barrier is unstable for 1 week.
#5.3 Crisis Entry
- [ ] Barrier HP below 30.
- [ ] weakening 5 or higher.
- [ ] remnant attacks continue after Daimo's defeat.
- [ ] Grip Mother permanently hostile.
In this case, Chapter 3 begins as a "domain defense battle." Before entering Chapter 3's Kyoukan theme, run a 2-session "crisis management" sub-arc.
#5.4 Standalone Conclusion (Campaign End or Branch)
If all PCs are dead, the domain settles, or the players agree to end, do not proceed to Chapter 3. In that case, stage the epilogue:
"The domain remained. Or perhaps it did not. Either way — in one valley of the Kii Peninsula, the memory of a place that once existed remained. Memory is a chain, and chains are memory. That was Black Rope's final lesson."
#6. Bridge Narrative — From Chapter 2 to Chapter 3
#6.1 The Three Bridge Threads
When entering Chapter 3 (Kyoukan), the following three elements connect naturally.
#Thread 1: Black Rope's Afterecho
The question the PCs faced in Chapter 2, "everyone is bound somewhere," returns in another form in Chapter 3 — "how far does the scream of the bound reach?" Kyoukan is a hell of pain, and it contrasts with Black Rope's stillness.
#Thread 2: Seed of the Seal
The old shrine trace from Chapter 2 — "there were those who fell here first" — appears in Chapter 3 as complete ruins. Those ruins hold a clue for returning.
#Thread 3: Experience of Negotiation
The negotiation skills the PCs accumulated in Chapter 2 become a major way to avoid combat in Chapter 3. However, Chapter 3's yoma are more violent. Negotiation Target Number +2 by default.
#6.2 Preview of the First Scene of Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Session 9 begins as follows.
"After leaving Black Rope, you walked a couple of rounds south through the Spirit Realm. The air changes. This time the quiet disappears — from far away, a scream can be heard. Not one. Thousands overlap. That is the Flank Zone of Kyoukan(叫喚)."
#6.3 Chapter 3 Opening Variations by Route
#Hegemony Route
- Insert the Daimo remnant attack subplot at the start of Chapter 3.
- Each PC can RP about the "feel of the weapon in their hand."
- The screams of Kyoukan sound stranger.
#Truth·Compassion Route
- Start Chapter 3 with the Grip Mother visit event.
- She "worries" about entering Kyoukan. "There is no stillness there. Be careful."
- She may provide the remains of the bronze mirror (if it was not used in Act 4).
#Void Route
- Start Chapter 3 with sacrifice PC resonance awakening.
- The sacrifice PC is replaced by a new PC, or the remaining PCs deepen.
- When entering Kyoukan, the sacrifice PC's voice warns, "Be careful."
#7. Standalone Endings — If the Campaign Ends in Chapter 2
#7.1 Ending A — "Pact of Stillness"
If the Truth·Compassion route succeeds + the domain accepts the Black Rope alliance.
"One more Black Rope-colored thread is woven inside the domain's Barrier. Whenever the wind blows, that thread sings low. The residents now use that song as a bedtime lullaby. As years pass, the domain slowly comes to resemble the forest. But the forest also slowly comes to resemble the domain. It is the process by which two places become one place."
#7.2 Ending B — "The Weight of Those Who Protected"
If the Hegemony route is victorious + the domain is stable.
"Even after 1 year, the echo of the defeated Daimo enters the residents' dreams. Once each month, the lord climbs to the shrine and offers a ritual prayer. 'We protected it. But what does it mean to protect?' That question continues into the next generation."
#7.3 Ending C — "The Person of Memory"
If the Void route + 1 generation passes.
"In the domain, one person's absence remained as an eternal place. His name is passed down to children in every generation. When someone asks, 'Why did he remain?' the adults answer this way — 'Because for us to be here, he had to be there.' That answer becomes the spirit of the domain."
#7.4 Ending D — "Village of Settling"
If the domain unites with Black Rope.
"One morning, the Barrier vanished. But the domain did not vanish. The domain itself had become the Barrier. The residents no longer fear yoma. Yoma no longer harm the residents. The domain became one zone of Black Rope, and Grip Mother became the eldest of the domain. On maps of the Kii Peninsula, that place slowly faded away, but the domain itself remained. Somewhere else."
#8. GM Note — Chapter-End Staging
#8.1 Chapter-End Rite
A GM-led rite at the end of Session 8.
- Read description aloud: read the route-appropriate ending scene (2~3 minutes).
- One line from each PC: each PC briefly expresses their own impression.
- Return to the domain scene: welcome words from the lord (Akihisa).
- Gensho's ritual prayer: the onmyoji speaks one passage of the ritual prayer.
- End the session: "Chapter 2 is over. See you in Chapter 3."
#8.2 Collect Feedback
5 minutes of player feedback after Session 8 ends.
- "What was the most memorable moment in this chapter?"
- "What did your PC learn?"
- "What do you want to see in the next chapter?"
Reflect the feedback in Chapter 3 preparation.
#8.3 Chapter 2 Experience Summary
Core notes the GM should add to the campaign record.
| Item | Record |
|---|---|
| route | choose from Hegemony/Truth·Compassion/Void/settling |
| final Barrier HP | value |
| final weakening | value |
| Grip Mother relationship | hostile/neutral/friendly/revered |
| Kokujo Daimo state | vanished/seal maintained/integration/coexistence/relocation |
| Kokujo-ryu unlocked | O/X |
| bridge-thread state | state of the 3 threads |

#10. Next-Chapter Preview
#10.1 Chapter 3 — Kyoukan(叫喚)
"You enter the hell of sound. Here, silence is a sin."
Chapter 3 takes place in the hell of pain, Kyoukan. It sharply contrasts with Black Rope's stillness. The PCs test the negotiation skills they learned in Black Rope inside Kyoukan — but Kyoukan yoma do not listen. They respond only to their own screams.
#10.2 Expected Session Count for Chapter 3
- 4 sessions (Sessions 9~12).
- PC 4th dan → 5th dan target.
#10.3 Core New Elements of Chapter 3
- Kyoukan Hell zone gimmicks (sound-based checks).
- New school: Kyoukan-ryu(叫喚流).
- Increased attacks from outside the domain (Barrier HP pressure).
- Full exploration of the old shrine ruins.
See Chapter 3 - Screaming Hell (叫喚) for details (reference when writing that chapter).

- Truth·Compassion route succeeds (easiest route).
- Hegemony route victory + Grip Mother Affinity friendly or higher.
- Void route succeeds (sacrifice PC is the teacher).
#B.2 Teaching Target
- Onmyoji Gensho (most natural).
- PC with Chivalric Love 3 or higher (strict).
- Qualified scholar in the domain (candidate).
#B.3 Teaching Process
- Place: shrine clearing (during Chapter 2) or domain shrine (post-visit).
- Duration: 30 days of domain time.
- Materials: 2 or more Kokujo-ryu preparation-grade cores + 1 1st-dan core.
#B.4 Learned Techniques
- 1st dan "First Chain" — attempt to bind 1 enemy.
- 2nd dan "Dress of Chains" — summon defensive chains.
- 3rd dan "Bound Heart" — wide-area mental-stabilizing ritual.
See Kokujo-ryu (黒縄流) for details.
#Appendix C — Chapter 2 Design Retrospective
#C.1 Design Intent
Chapter 2 was designed as "the hell of negotiation." It advances one step beyond Chapter 1's "mirror of wounds" and makes PCs feel the weight of choice and responsibility.
#C.2 Central Lessons
- "Releasing someone may not be the answer." — shown through Mizuki and Sakai.
- "A promise is a thread. If cut, it bleeds." — shown through the Grip Mother contract.
- "Obsession is a chain, and chains become selfhood." — shown through Kokujo Daimo.
#C.3 Expected Difficulties
- If players approach with the habit that "all heroic spirits should be released," the GM should adjust with the Sakai and Osushi scenes.
- Groups unused to RP may struggle in Act 3. The GM should present choices clearly.
- If the Void route is attempted, emotional load on players — safety agreement required.
#C.4 Feedback Reflection
The structure of this chapter can be adjusted after playtesting. In particular, the weight of the Act 4 threefold choice and the details of the Truth·Compassion route's 3-step negotiation can be revised according to feedback.
#Appendix D — Final Words
#D.1 Summary in Three Sentences
"Chapter 1 was the mirror of wounds. Chapter 2 was the forest of chains. You — now know your own chains."
"In the next chapter, it will be time to hear your own scream."
"And before you hear that scream, look back once more at this chapter — at what you now hold."
#D.2 Final Greeting to the GM
Thank you for running Chapter 2. This chapter has a difficult balance between RP and checks. Breathe slowly with the players, and do not hurry. Black Rope's theme is stillness. Let that stillness dissolve into the rhythm of the session itself.
Final GM Note: A group that completed Chapter 2 has now become players who can try to solve any difficulty through conversation. That is a reward, and also a danger. In Chapter 3 they will meet those who cannot be reached by conversation. How the PCs react then — that is the test of whether Black Rope's lesson has truly taken root.
#Next Steps
- Chapter 3 Overview: Chapter 3 - Screaming Hell (叫喚)
- Kokujo-ryu Details: Kokujo-ryu (黒縄流)
- Spirit Realm Intelligence Update: 8 Spirit Realm Intelligences — Negotiable Others
- Campaign Index: Drift of the Spirit Realm (靈界漂流記)
Three Sentences for Closing the Chapter:
1. "Whether you loosen chains or bind them, you know chains."
2. "Knowing is a burden, a weapon, and a promise."
3. "That is what Chapter 2 gave you. — Now you have confirmed it."
