#Scent — Climbing the Keep

#GM Read-Aloud Box (Session Opening)

"Night ends, and night comes again. Time is thin in the city of Shonetsu — the concept of morning comes for a moment, then disappears. You leave the mansion and walk toward the keep."

"Haibi walks ahead. He says nothing. He is walking this road for the first time in 200 years. 200 years ago, he walked this road behind his lord. Today he walks before you."

"The street is quiet. Even the sound of fighting has vanished. The entire city is watching you. Waiting."

"The keep comes into view. 7 stories. A pillar of flame. At its top — an unmoving shape sits."

#Four Core Direction Points

  1. Weight of ascent. The keep has 7 stories. Each floor has a different trial. Gradual ascent is the main structure of Act 4.
  2. First impression of the Great Dharma King. He was Kitami Masanobu. But he has almost forgotten that name. He is now the Great Dharma King of Shonetsu — lord-grade yoma-level. Yet he does not even know he is a yoma.
  3. First appearance of heat. This entire chapter has emphasized "not hot." In the second half of Act 4 — heat appears for the first time. That is the Great Dharma King's true form.
  4. Partial reveal of the truth. The existence of the Enmadoji Seal is made explicit for the first time. 2 map axes are revealed.

#4.1 Lower Keep — Corridor of Hellfire

Location: 1st floor of the keep. A wide corridor. Flames live on both walls like murals.

#Environmental Check

The corridor's flames move after the PCs. A "chasing flame" forms in response to one PC's movement. This flame does not actually burn. However, if it hits, Reversion Residue +1 round.

  • Evasion check: Finesse Target Number 13 (2d10+Finesse)
  • On success: move while avoiding the flame. No reversion accumulation.
  • On failure: reversion +1 round. One piece of equipment weakens.

#Hellfire Soldier Encounter

In the middle of the corridor, 3~5 Hellfire Soldiers(業火兵) wait. They are Kitamiyama's transformation-faction soldiers — the final defense line protecting the lord.

  • Combat stats: 3 minion-grade Hellfire Soldiers + 1 veteran-grade (13-06 Yoma Bestiary reference)
  • Combat gimmick: Hellfire Soldiers reflect exorcism attacks. If a PC uses talismans or spells, that power reflects and returns to the PC.
  • Resolution: solve with physical attacks, not exorcism. Or call the Hellfire Soldier's name — if the PCs guess and shout his true name from 200 years ago, his resistance weakens (Wisdom Target Number 15 to infer the name).

#Activating Izanagi's Technique

If a PC received Izanagi's technique in Act 3, they can activate it for the first time in this battle. Technique name: "Weeping Sword(泣の剣)" — each time it is swung, the name of the one being cut comes to mind. If one Hellfire Soldier was an old friend of Izanagi, the fight weighs heavily on the PC.

#4.2 Middle Floors — Battle with Ash Renshu(煉首)

Location: 2nd~3rd floors of the keep. Spiral stairs. The battle occurs on the stairs.

Renshu: general-grade transformed bodies of Kitamiyama. The lord's guards. Once human.

  • Combat stats: 2 veteran-grade Renshu + 4 minion-grade (13-06 reference)
  • Combat gimmick: Renshu accelerate reversion. If standing near a PC, that PC's reversion rounds increase 2 times as fast.
  • Special ability: one Renshu is an old comrade of loyal retainer Haibi. If Haibi accompanies the PCs, he recognizes the Renshu. The Renshu also recognizes Haibi. Haibi says: "Brother. I chose. You have not yet chosen."

#Negotiation Opportunity

Negotiation with the Renshu is possible. Target Number 15 (Negotiation + Haibi accompaniment modifier +2):

  • Success: 1~2 Renshu move aside. Combat stats decrease.
  • Failure: full combat.

#After Victory

As a Renshu vanishes, it provides 1 core. The moment a PC holds that core, they see a scene — the Renshu's final memory from life. The moment just before transformation.

#4.3 4th-Floor Study — Finding the Enmadoji Map ★ Gain Return Clues 2 and 3

Location: 4th floor of the keep. Study. Thousands of books. Most have become ash. Only a few survived.

#Structure of the Study

  • Central desk: the seat the Great Dharma King uses for "research." One map is spread out.
  • Left shelves: Japanese geography books, records from 200 years ago
  • Right shelves: research related to Enmadoji — gathered by the Great Dharma King over 200 years
  • Rear wall: seal map — the positions of all 3 axes are drawn (2 axes confirmed, 1 axis guessed)

#Checks — Map Decoding

  • Basic decoding: Wisdom or Geography Target Number 15. On success, understand the map's basic structure.
  • Deep decoding: Wisdom+Sorcery/Barrier Target Number 18. On success, gain exact locations of 2 of the 3 axes.
  • Complete decoding: Target Number 20. On success, also gain a speculative clue for 1 of the 3 axes (terrain traits of the question-mark area).

#Information on the Map

  1. Axis 1 (record) — Kagamiyama Mirror Pond. Already known.
  2. Axis 2a mountain in Hida. Exact coordinates. This is the already-loosened axis. The cause of the Kagamiyama drift.
  3. Axis 3somewhere in the southwest of the core world. Specific location unknown. However, it is recorded as a "triangle vertex" relationship. If Axis 1 and Axis 2 are connected, Axis 3's rough location can be estimated.

#Great Dharma King's Research Notes (Handout)

On the desk in the study are notes written by the Great Dharma King over 200 years. The final passage:

One day in the Oei 20s. I learned the truth.
We did not fall here by accident. One axis of the seal had loosened,
and our domain stood in that place. We were a side effect of the seal.

Since that night I have studied this city. What might be possible
to keep my domain alive. And I learned —
if someone comes to lock the seal again, we can be released.
But that person has not come for 200 years.

I became king of this city. I burn my residents.
I hate this role. But I cannot stop.
I am their lord.

Whoever comes. Whoever you are. If you read this book —
stop me.

Shock points for the players:

  1. The Great Dharma King understands his own role
  2. He wants release
  3. "This drift was not an accident" is made explicit

#10th-Dan Advancement Deferral Direction

During study decoding, one PC (especially academic or spiritual-power type) shows signs of reaching 10th dan. At this moment, the GM says:

"You can take one more step. Knowledge lifts you. But — something inside you stops. Not yet. That realm waits for you elsewhere. You know this."

The 10th-dan boundary from the design notes. Advancement is deferred. The PC remains 9th dan.

#4.4 5th-Floor Uta's Room — Surviving Drifted Mixed-Blood

Location: 5th floor of the keep. A small room. Tatami. A few toys. And inside it — a child.

#Introducing Uta

The child's name is Uta(唄). She appears to be 7~8 years old. But her way of speaking is much more mature. Her clothes are not of the Kitami house — modern(=PC era) children's clothing. Worn down by the city's ash.

  • She is not a person from Kitamiyama 200 years ago
  • The Great Dharma King placed her in this room recently (a few years ago)
  • Uta is a survivor from another drifted domain — one very small domain recently fell here, and only Uta survived

#Uta's Words

"You're new arrivals, aren't you. Like me. I've lived in this room for a very long time. At first I was a little bigger too, but time is strange in this city, so I don't grow."

"The king treats me like his daughter. He's not scary. He doesn't burn me. He reads books to me. And sometimes he cries."

"You came to meet the king, right? You came to stop him, right? Please stop him. So he won't cry anymore."

#The PCs' Dilemma

Uta is a drifted mixed-blood — after several years in the Spirit Realm, her body is already half close to a Spirit Realm being. Can she be taken back to the core world? She has no family.

PC choices:

ChoiceEffect
Promise to take Uta to the domainfollow-up story in Chapter 5. Domain resident +1 (child). However, her Spirit Realm reactions must be managed.
Leave Uta in this roomafter the Great Dharma King's disappearance, Uta risks being absorbed into the city's ash. But this also respects her choice.
Give Uta the right to chooseUta answers, "If you stop the king, I'll decide" — reprieve until Act 5
Ignore Utaencounter fails in this room. Begin the 4.5 boss battle.

#4.5 Top of the Keep — Facing the Great Dharma King of Shonetsu ★ Boss Battle

Location: 7th floor of the keep. Top hall. Throne. On it, the Great Dharma King.

#Entering the Scene

"You climb the stairs and push open the final door. The hall opens. It is vast. Vast enough that the end cannot be seen. At that end — a throne. On the throne — he sits."

"He has human shape. But his body is living flame. His crown is seven tongues of fire. His eyes are — his own domain. In those eyes, you see Kitamiyama burning. Forever."

"He looks at you. And speaks:"

> "So you have come. I have waited 200 years for you. Let me rest."

#Boss Battle — 3 Phases

Great Dharma King stats: lord-grade yoma. See 13-06 for details.

#Phase 1 — The King's Test

At first, the Great Dharma King does not fight. Instead, he asks the PCs questions. If the PCs cannot answer, move immediately to Phase 2 (the Great Dharma King's anger).

"Did you also stand before a choice? What decision did your domain make? Speak. I will listen."

The PCs answer based on what they saw in the three streets. The faction mirror of Act 3 is reflected in this scene.

  • Compassionate answer (affirming return or settlement): the Great Dharma King kneels and weeps. "Was my decision wrong?" Skip Phase 1 and go directly to Phase 3 (release scene).
  • Firm answer (reject transformation, condemn the lord): the Great Dharma King becomes angry. Enter Phase 2.
  • Neutral/investigative answer (withhold judgment, request more information): the Great Dharma King gives a test of wisdom. He turns questions about Enmadoji back on the PCs. If the PCs answer using knowledge from the study, peaceful conversation continues.
#Phase 2 — The King's Anger

The Great Dharma King rises. All of his flames pour onto the PCs. At this moment — Shonetsu becomes hot for the first time.

GM read-aloud:

"Throughout this chapter, you have felt that it was 'not hot.' Now — that changes. The Great Dharma King's flame burns your skin. It truly burns. You take burns."

  • Combat gimmick: the Great Dharma King's attacks deal combined physical+spiritual damage. He has exorcism reflection — PC spells come back.
  • Weakness: attacks from one who calls his own domain name (Kitamiyama) get a -3 defense modifier.
  • Weakness 2: a PC who saw all three streets in Act 3 has a "mirror imprint" and gains +2 resistance against the Great Dharma King's attacks.
#Phase 3 — The King's Release

At Wounds 7 or below, or when a PC shouts a specific line ("you may rest now," etc.), enter Phase 3. The Great Dharma King stops moving. He sinks down.

"I... I am tired. I guarded this city for 200 years. I forgot what guarding meant. I am a king. I was human. I — who was I?"

PC choices:

  • Kill — cut down the Great Dharma King and erase him. Gain his core (1 lord-grade). However, the domain's souls are not released.
  • Release — tell the Great Dharma King "you have done enough" and let him go. The Great Dharma King becomes ash of his own will. All souls of Kitamiyama are released. Gain the core + the residual energy of the entire city.

GM recommendation: release is the narratively correct ending. But respect player choice.

#4.6 The Great Dharma King's Last Words — Partial Reveal of the Truth

Just before the Great Dharma King becomes ash (or just before he is killed), he leaves his last words.

"You must know. This drift was not an accident."

"Wherever the seal loosens, a domain falls. My domain did. Your domain did. And — other domains will."

"The three axes of Enmadoji. One is loose. Two remain. If 1 more axis loosens — it will awaken. I do not know its name. But I felt it. For 200 years."

"I was a king. I am no longer a king. You — you can choose. More wisely than I did."

"Read my books. Take the map. And — remember. I loved my domain. That was my sin."

His body shines brightly one last time. Then it becomes ash.

Core information revealed:

  1. The drift is not an accident — it is a phenomenon linked to the seal
  2. Of Enmadoji's 3 axes, 1 axis is already loose — the cause of the Kagamiyama drift
  3. If another axis loosens — "it" awakens (the sealed target)
  4. Take the map — the study map is a return clue for the PCs

This information becomes the direct motive for going to the gate of Chapter 5 Mugen.

#4.7 Descent · City Changes

The moment the Great Dharma King disappears, the city shakes. The flames weaken. The falling direction of ash returns to normal (from above to below).

#The City's Change to Ash

  • The transformed residents stop their final dance. Their laughter becomes real laughter. And — they turn to ash. Peacefully.
  • Izanagi lowers his sword at the east gate. For the first time in 200 years, his face becomes the face of someone resting. He turns to ash.
  • The Half-Ash make their final murmur — "thank you" — and turn to ash.
  • Loyal retainer Haibi says farewell to the PCs: "I can rest now. Thank you." He turns to ash.

#Atobe Reika's Ash

Reika's ash at the shrine speaks one last time:

"After 200 years, my sacrifice has become meaning. You are that meaning. Remember — eternity is not salvation. A short life is precious. Protect your domain. Do not fail as I did."

Her ash scatters.

#Uta's Choice

Uta reveals her decision to the PCs:

  • "I'll go with you" — settlement in the domain (Chapter 5 direction material)
  • "I'll stay here" — Uta becomes the last citizen of this city. The only human in a city turned to ash. (A sad but beautiful ending)
  • "Send me to another domain" — the PCs promise to use the Enmadoji map to move her to another drifted domain (Chapter 5 side-quest material)

#Boss Battle Rules — Great Dharma King of Shonetsu

#Great Dharma King Profile (Summary)

  • Type: lord-grade yoma (final transformed form)
  • Wounds: 18 (3-phase split: Phase 1 no combat, Phase 2 Wounds 11, Phase 3 Wounds 7 or negotiation ending)
  • Defense: physical -2 resistance, spiritual -5 resistance (exorcism reflection)
  • Attacks:
  • Hellfire Flood (area attack, 2d10+8 >= Defense, on hit 1 Wound [Incorporeal])
  • King's Gaze (single target, on Mental Save, Target Number 18 failure, Fear state)
  • Throne Summons (every 3 rounds, summon 1 Hellfire Soldier)
  • Weaknesses:
  • Name — shout "Kitami Masanobu" to impose a -3 defense modifier for 1 round
  • Mirror imprint — attacks from PCs who saw all three streets deal +2 additional damage
  • Release declaration — condition to enter Phase 3. "You may rest now" or a similar line

#Narrative Structure of the Battle

This boss battle aims for narrative completion, not numerical victory. The PCs:

  • understand the Great Dharma King
  • release the Great Dharma King
  • hear the Great Dharma King's last words

Even if his Wounds reach 0 numerically, if the PCs do not declare release, the Great Dharma King disappears without last words. In this case, part of the Enmadoji information is lost (Axis 3 speculation unavailable).

#Exorcism Reflection Rule [This Whole Act]

Every transformed yoma in Shonetsu reflects exorcism attacks.

  • If a PC uses an exorcism talisman or spell and fails the check, 50% of that damage goes to the PC.
  • Exception: a PC carrying Atobe Reika's ash is immune to reflection. Reika's spiritual power protects them.

#Acquiring the Enmadoji Map in the Study — Formal Rule

Decoding levelAcquisition
Basic (Target Number 15 success)map appearance · understand 3-axis structure
Deep (Target Number 18 success)Axis 2: exact coordinates in Hida region · Axis 1: Kagamiyama reconfirmed
Complete (Target Number 20 success)Axis 3: core-world southwest area · "triangle vertex" relationship clue

The PCs take the physical map. It is the core clue for entering Mugen in Chapter 5.

#10th-Dan Advancement Block Rule [Strict in This Act]

  • If a check result meets a 10th-dan advancement condition → handle as "deferred"
  • GM read-aloud: "You could have taken one more step. But that step is not for now."
  • A PC who misses advancement feels "something almost reached" — unlocked just before Chapter 5 Act 4

#Direction — Session Management

#Session Opening — 5 Minutes

  • Read the keep ascent box. Emphasize loyal retainer Haibi's silence.
  • Check each PC's current state (reversion value, axis movement, exposure).

#Middle 3 Hours — 1st Floor to 5th Floor

  • Manage the time for each floor. Prevent overrun.
  • Secure at least 40 minutes for the study(4.3) scene. This scene is the only point for gaining Return Clues 2 and 3.
  • Run the Uta(4.4) scene with high emotional intensity. Let the players become emotionally invested in the child.

#Boss Battle — 90 Minutes

  • At the Phase 1 question, secure player time. Let them answer slowly.
  • During Phase 2 combat, the GM plays the Great Dharma King's pain. He speaks while fighting — about his residents, about his daughter.
  • The Phase 3 release scene comes with long silence. The climax is the moment one player says, "You may rest now."

#Session End — 20 Minutes

  • Read the descent and city-collapse scene.
  • Uta's choice scene.
  • Hook sentence: "You hold the map. Three points are drawn on it. One of them is your domain. The other two are — places you have not yet found."

Release (Phase 3 conversation ending)complete Enmadoji information. At the gate of Mugen in Chapter 5, +2 modifier as "ones who have already released someone once"
Kill (Phase 3 combat ending)partial Enmadoji information. No Chapter 5 modifier. The Great Dharma King core is strong.
Defeat (PC party wiped out or retreats)must return to the domain and retry. If reversion accumulation is high, PC Mental Save modifier -1

#Direction Tips Box

#Tip 1 — Turning "Not Hot"

In Phase 2 of 4.5, clearly tell the players that "heat appears for the first time." "The hell you have felt until now was false. The real fire begins now."

#Tip 2 — Directing the Great Dharma King's Humanity

The Great Dharma King is not a villain. He became this because he loved his domain too much. Play him as grief-stricken. Everything he does is "for the domain." That madness should call forth pity.

#Tip 3 — Directing Uta

Do not play Uta as too clever. She is a child. She uses simple words. But her words move the players' hearts. The GM should try playing her with the voice of a real 7-year-old child.

#Tip 4 — Physical Enmadoji Map

Prepare the map as real paper and place it on the table. A Japanese map with three points. Two points in red ink, one in hazy gold. A map the players can actually touch becomes this chapter's keepsake.

#Tip 5 — Silence in the Release Scene

When the Great Dharma King hears "you may rest now," the GM stays silent for more than 1 minute. Let every sound in the room stop. When describing the Great Dharma King slowly becoming ash, use few words.

#Akihisa's Reactions (All of Act 4)

If Lord Akihisa accompanies the party in Act 4, his reactions determine the climax of this chapter.

#Akihisa's Three Choices

During the Great Dharma King confrontation, Akihisa steps forward. The Great Dharma King recognizes him — the face of a lord who stood in the same place.

Akihisa's actionEffect
Kneels before the Great Dharma King and declares, "Your failure is also the failure of my ancestors"Akihisa's heart(心) axis "Duty·Truth" confirmed. Return Ending favored. PC party gains Way(道) modifier +2.
Points his sword at the Great Dharma King and declares, "I will not become you"Akihisa's heart axis "Blood" confirmed. Return Ending favored. However, Akihisa becomes the Great Dharma King's first attack target.
Declares to the Great Dharma King, "I will release you"Akihisa's heart axis "Feeling·Bond" confirmed. Release ending guaranteed. All PCs' mirror imprints strengthened.

Akihisa's choice is one of this chapter's strongest moments. Give the player (lord controller or lord NPC handler) enough time.

#Akihisa's Change

At the end of Act 4, Akihisa's appearance changes subtly. He is no longer a "young" lord. His speech becomes firmer. Some PCs notice this immediately.
