"To burn is to send. What remains after the sending — that is the true subject of this school." — The hermit of Ash-Light (灰光)

#§ Scent (香) — School Philosophy, Origins, and Teacher

#The Path to Embodying Scorching Heat Hell Through Exorcism

Shonetsu (焦熱) is the sixth of the 8 Great Hells. "Tapana" — the hell of "burning." In the interpretation of Drift of the Spirit Realm, the essence of Shonetsu is not "the moment of burning" but "after becoming ash" — reduction (Buddhist 8 Great Hells GM Guide § 4).

Shonetsu-ryu is the school that transposed this hell's essence into Exorcism. Exorcism is the skill of purifying and sending away yoma. The Exorcism of Shonetsu-ryu uses an eternally inextinguishable fire as its medium, reducing the yoma's body through that fire. Not burning — but turning it to the state of ash after burning.

#The School's Core Principle — Return (還)

The Exorcism schools of the main rules each hold a different principle. Shugendo holds Nature, mantra holds Sound. The principle of Shonetsu-ryu is Return (還) — reduction, going back.

The heart of Return has three elements.

First, the endless hellfire. A Shonetsu-ryu exorcist carries "hellfire" in a single ritual implement — usually a khakkhara (錫杖) or a staff (拄杖). This fire is not physical fire. It cannot be extinguished and requires no fuel. However — it does not burn just anything. It burns only what possesses karma (業). It cannot burn a human body. It burns only the karmic body (業體) of yoma.

Second, the purifying function of ash. What remains after burning a yoma with hellfire is ash. This ash is different from ordinary ash. It is the "purified residue" of the yoma. How this ash is disposed of is the center of Shonetsu-ryu practice. If properly buried, a purity (淨) takes root in that place. If mishandled — the ash awakens again and begins burning other things.

Third, the practitioner themselves also becomes ash. This is the heavy cost of Shonetsu-ryu. Each time hellfire is used, the practitioner's own karma burns away little by little alongside it. Used briefly, only ash accumulates in the body — but used for long, part of one's past, memories, and identity is reduced to ash. A master of Shonetsu-ryu must be — one who is prepared to lose.

#Origins — The Monk Who Guarded a Burning City

The origin of Shonetsu-ryu lies in a single monk. About 150 years ago, during a war, a great temple was burning. The temple's abbot — did not extinguish the fire, but rather accepted it. Within the fire, he purified hundreds of yoma-transformed departed souls. The temple burned to the ground, but only ash remained on that spot. The place where the ash was gathered together — was filled with a clear, pure energy.

However, the abbot himself also became ash. No body remained. Only the khakkhara he had used — half-burned — remained in the ash. At the tip of the khakkhara, a small fire still burned. This fire did not go out.

That khakkhara passed through many hands afterward. Most could not endure the fire, and soon perished. The few who survived — have carried on "Shonetsu-ryu." Not a school — but a flow of khakkhara succession.

#Teacher — The Hermit of Ash-Light (灰光)

The Shonetsu-ryu teacher in the basic scenario of Drift of the Spirit Realm is Kaikou (灰光). The name means "light of ash."

Appearance: a male in old monk's attire. Beard and eyebrows white, and the skin mottled as if covered in grey ash. In hand, a half-burned khakkhara, with an inextinguishable small fire at its tip. He speaks little; his voice is low and dry.

Kaikou is — a hermit. He resides in a ruined temple outside the domain. That temple has already burned and only ash remains, but Kaikou stays there, guarding what has already disappeared. If asked why, he answers: "Even ash has things that must be guarded."

Kaikou is a living human. Not a ghost. However, his lifespan ran out long ago — he burned away his own sense of lifespan as a side effect of hellfire. So he remains in the temple in a state of neither dying nor living. To the PC he appears as an "old human," but in reality he is close to a mythic being.

When one who wishes to receive transmission comes, Kaikou asks a question. "What are you prepared to lose?" Depending on the PC's answer — Kaikou decides whether to transmit. Abstract answers ("I am prepared to lose everything") are grounds for refusal. Kaikou desires concrete loss — some memory you currently hold, some relationship, some pride — can you put that into the hellfire?

#§ Law (法) — School License, Secret Arts, and Transmission Stages

#School Basic Information

Type: Secret Transmission | Skill: Exorcism | Finesse Cost: 1 slot

Bonus: A connection to Kaikou the hermit. Advice during crises (GM hint). Save against the ash-reduction gimmick — when a PC's possession is ash-reduced, 1d10 ≥ 7 protects 1 item (GM rolls). When passing through the edge of Scorching Heat Hell, yoma hostility -1.

Restriction: Karma (業) expenditure every time a Shonetsu-ryu technique is used. Per 1 use of a licensed technique, reduces 1 "memory fragment" of the PC to ash (the GM causes one of the PC's background elements to fade — complete loss occurs after secret art use). When the secret art is used, 1 major loss (PC player chooses or negotiates with GM). In addition, a Shonetsu-ryu practitioner gains +1 on Wounds recovery checks during lulls (the body is light as ash) — this is both a benefit and a warning. As recovery becomes easier — it is a signal that the body is already disappearing.

#Intermediate Stages — Novice → Trained → Master

StageEffectTransmission Condition
Novice (1 pt)Unskilled penalty lifted (same as ordinary Exorcism)Experience of Shonetsu Depth 1 or higher + first contact with Kaikou + declaration of readiness to lose
Trained (2 pts)+1 bonus + Ash Perception (advance warning when nearby ash-reduction gimmick activates)Experience of Shonetsu Depth 2 + 1 or more ash-reduction gimmick experiences
Licensed (3 pts)+2 + Replaced with School License ManeuverSurvive Shonetsu Depth 2 + first loss experience (1 PC background element faded)
Secret Art (4 pts, Master)+3 + Replaced with School Secret ArtExperience of Shonetsu Depth 3 + pass Kaikou's khakkhara succession test
Saint (5 pts)Automatic success (same as ordinary Exorcism)N/A (Shonetsu-ryu has no additional effect at 5 pts)

#School License Maneuver — Hellfire Finger (業火の一指)

[School License Replacement] Hellfire Finger (業火の一指)
Type: Kata | Energy: 3 | Limit: 1 breath
Effect: Designate 1 yoma target. 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+2 >= Defense.
On success — 2 Wounds damage + attach **hellfire mark** (persists 2 rounds).
Hellfire mark: target expends 1 additional Wound each breath
(Energy +1 when taking attack/defense actions).
Also, when the target's Wounds reach 0 — the target is immediately
**reduced to ash** (ordinary yoma: complete annihilation; Lord-grade
and above: also cannot revive until the next lull).
Against human targets: 1 Wound only (hellfire cannot burn a human body).
After use, the PC has 1 memory fragment designated by the GM —
    that memory fades.
"The fire at this fingertip is something you do not have. You are already
one who has melted into this fire."
Resolution: 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+2 >= Defense.
Limit: 1 breath. Hellfire mark cannot stack on the same target. Full effect
    on yoma only.

Maneuver replacement relationship:

StageBase ManeuverShonetsu-ryu Replacement Maneuver
LicensedYoma +2 attack[Kata] Hellfire Finger (業火の一指): 3 Energy, 1 breath. Yoma target 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+2. 2 Wounds + hellfire mark (Energy +1 per breath, reduced to ash at Wounds 0). 1 Wound against humans. User: 1 memory fragment faded.

Commentary — The main-rules Shugendo license technique "Goma Formation" creates a Holy Fire environment at the zone scale. The Shonetsu-ryu license is a single-target sustained annihilation technique. The effect of directly reducing the yoma's body is powerful — but the practitioner's own memories are the cost. Over the long term, the PC's past fades. This "fading" is the narrative weight of Shonetsu-ryu.

#School Secret Art Maneuver — Reduction (還元)

[School Secret Art Replacement] Reduction (還元)
Type: Kata | Energy: 5 | Limit: 1 time per combat + natural recovery up to
1 time per campaign; permanent cost for 2 or
                  more uses
Effect: All yoma within own Zone + 2 Zones as targets. Each 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+3
    >= Defense.
On success — 3 Wounds + **hellfire mark** + yoma of Lord-grade and
below are immediately reduced to ash (regardless of whether Wounds are 0).
    Lord-grade (Lord/Elite) yoma: 3 Wounds + hellfire mark only.
Also valid against incorporeal yoma (Incorporeal) (Shonetsu hellfire
    acts on the soul layer).
    No damage against human targets.
On use — the PC permanently loses one **gravely significant something**
    of their own.
This "something" is chosen by the PC player or negotiated with the GM.
    Examples:
     - All memories with one NPC (that NPC no longer knows the PC)
     - 1-step decrease in one skill (permanent)
     - Complete loss of one background element (e.g., memory of one's clan)
     - Part of a specific sense of the PC (e.g., cannot remember a specific
      person's face)
"The heart of the sender becomes the same as the one being sent.
That is the cost of this school."
Resolution: 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+3 >= Defense, per yoma.
Limit: 1 time per combat. 1 time per campaign for natural recovery (re-use
possible after lull). 2 or more uses per campaign — the teacher also
gradually becomes ash (long-term play failure trigger; see §Long-term
    Impact below).

Maneuver replacement relationship:

StageBase ManeuverShonetsu-ryu Replacement Maneuver
Secret Art+1 Wound when hitting yoma[Kata] Reduction (還元): 5 Energy, 1 time per combat. All yoma within 2 Zones. Each 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+3. 3 Wounds + hellfire mark. Lord-grade and below immediately reduced. Also valid against incorporeal Incorporeal beings. User: 1 major loss (memory/skill/sense permanently lost).

Commentary — The main-rules Shugendo secret art "Great Sealing" is a 1-target sealing technique. The Shonetsu-ryu secret art "Reduction" is an area-of-effect instant-annihilation reduction. Damage and range are both powerful, but the practitioner's cost is extreme. Using it once per campaign is the "appropriate" level — using it twice or more causes the PC itself to gradually become ash. This is by design the "nuclear weapon" role for 1 climax battle in the campaign's latter half.

#Resolution Flow Example for the Secret Art

Situation: PC with Shonetsu-ryu secret art (exorcist). Chapter 4 climax battle. A yoma horde (1 Lord, 2 Elite, 3 Veteran, 5 Minion) attacks the domain.

  1. PC declares "Reduction." Expend 5 Energy. PC player pre-declares their "loss" — "I will forget my teacher's face." (GM records)
  2. All 10 yoma within 2 Zones as targets. Individual checks.
  3. Lord 1 — 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+3 vs Defense 20 → success. 3 Wounds + hellfire mark. The Lord is not immediately reduced.
  4. Elite 2 — each check succeeds. 3 Wounds + immediately reduced to ash (complete annihilation).
  5. Veteran/Minion 8 — 6 succeed among the checks. Each immediately reduced. 2 fail (no damage).
  6. Combat result: Lord 3 Wounds + mark, 2 Elites annihilated, 6 Veterans/Minions annihilated. 2 surviving.
  7. After use: The PC forgets the teacher's face. At the next meeting with that NPC — when greeting, the other recognizes who they are, but the PC cannot recall the face. The NPC is saddened. This sadness becomes a narrative seed for the campaign's latter half.

#§ Transmission Conditions — Detail

#1. Hell Experience Conditions

StageExperience Required
NoviceEnter Shonetsu Depth 1 or higher (edge of the burning city)
TrainedStay at Shonetsu Depth 2 + experience ash-reduction gimmick (1 or more possessions reduced)
LicensedSurvive Shonetsu Depth 2 + declare "readiness to lose" to Kaikou
Secret ArtExperience Shonetsu Depth 3 + Kaikou's khakkhara succession test

#2. Yoma and Ghost Teachers Available for Negotiation

TeacherTypeLocationContact Condition
Kaikou (灰光)Human hermit (sense of lifespan burned away)Ruined temple at the edge of Scorching Heat HellExorcism 2 pts or more + Negotiation Target Number 15 + declaration of a specific thing to lose

Kaikou is a teacher who is difficult to contact. When one approaches the temple he stares in silence. The PC must speak first for dialogue to begin. That first word of dialogue — is Kaikou's criterion for evaluation.

#3. Declaration of Readiness to Lose

When receiving the Shonetsu-ryu license transmission, the PC declares 1 specific thing they are "prepared to lose." This declaration satisfies the following format.

  • Specific: Not "something" but a concrete element such as "regret over my mother's death"
  • Something of actual value: Something it would hurt the PC to actually lose. Formalistic answers are refused.
  • Something with in-game effect: Something implementable as a mechanism (one of: memory, skill, background element, sense)

This declaration does not cause immediate loss upon the license transmission itself. However, when the secret art is used, the declared item is the first to become the target of loss. If the secret art is never used, the declared item is theoretically maintained.

#4. Acquisition Dan

ConditionValue
Minimum acquisition dan6th dan
Recommended acquisition dan6th–8th dan

Shonetsu is the hell of Chapter 4, and Chapter 4 is the PC 6th–8th dan range. Assigning the Finesse slot to Shonetsu-ryu at 6th-dan promotion is the most natural path.

#§ Heart Shifts on Use (Q9 Decision Reflected)

#Corresponding Hearts for Shonetsu-ryu

Kōdō HeartGendō Heart
Truth (眞) — reduction in service of truth (sending yoma to true peace)No Heart (無心) — indifferent elimination (simple clearing/removal purpose)

Shonetsu-ryu is a technique of purification, but the motivation for purification determines the heart.

#Heart Shift Situations

Use SituationHeart Shift
Reduction to give yoma true liberation (religious compassion)眞 +1
Reduction to release a suffering soul眞 +1
Reduction after understanding and sending a vengeful spirit's cause眞 +1
Reduction for "clearing" purpose with no emotion (instrumental use)No Heart +1
Simple elimination to protect allies (yoma = obstacle)No Heart +1
Reduction as completion of personal revenge魔 +1 (rare case — Shonetsu-ryu is ill-suited to 魔, but possible)
Pure defense (no other option)No heart shift

#How to Declare Heart Shifts

When the PC declares Reduction or Hellfire Finger, the GM asks "Why are you sending this yoma?" If the answer is along the lines of "because this yoma suffered such pain in the past," 眞; if "because it is blocking the way," No Heart.

#The Difference Between 眞 and No Heart

This difference is the deep theme of Shonetsu-ryu. 眞 is the heart that acknowledges "this yoma also had meaning in its existence." No Heart is the heart that says "this yoma is a phenomenon. Remove it." Both can use Shonetsu-ryu, but in a long campaign — which direction accumulates will clearly change the PC's character.

眞-direction PC: Offers a brief prayer when a yoma is annihilated. Performs a ritual of gathering the reduced ash and burying it.

No Heart-direction PC: Yoma annihilation is a task. Moves on to the next battle. No interest in the ash.

#§ Example Scenarios

#Scenario 1 — "The Question at the Ruined Temple" (Chapter 4 Early Phase, 1–2-session length)

Premise: The PC party enters the edge of Scorching Heat Hell. Introduced by the domain abbot to visit the ruined temple's hermit (Kaikou). One PC (holding Exorcism 2–3 pts) has experienced the ash-reduction gimmick.

Development:

  1. The party reaches the ruined temple. Kaikou is waiting in front of the gate. He says "I knew you were coming."
  2. Kaikou asks the relevant PC: "What are you prepared to lose?"
  3. The PC player answers. Abstract answers are refused by Kaikou with silence. Kaikou waits indefinitely until a concrete answer emerges.
  4. When a concrete answer emerges, Kaikou shows the PC the fire on his khakkhara. "This fire does not go out. This fire will take part of you. You can still turn back."
  5. If the PC does not turn back, Kaikou moves one small spark from the fire at his khakkhara's tip to the PC's hand. The PC gains Shonetsu-ryu Novice. This small spark expands at the subsequent License/Secret Art stages.
  6. Kaikou says: "It is your fire now. Each time you use it — you become a little more ash. How much you are willing to lose is your choice."

Side event: During training, 2 ash yoma of Scorching Heat Hell attack the temple. The PC uses hellfire for the first time. On success, the first experience of witnessing 1 yoma immediately reduced to ash.

#Scenario 2 — "A Face Never Seen Again" (Mid to Late, 2–3-session length)

Premise: A PC holding the Shonetsu-ryu secret art decides to use "Reduction" in a critical combat situation. The target to lose — memories with a specific NPC in the domain (e.g., a retainer or a resident).

Development:

  1. During combat the PC declares Reduction. Selects "all memories with retainer X up until yesterday" as the target to lose. GM notes.
  2. Combat result: the yoma horde is annihilated in large numbers. Party victory.
  3. Post-combat lull. The PC returns to the domain. The retainer greets the PC. "Ah, you have returned. I wonder whether the advice I gave you yesterday was of help…"
  4. The PC player has no idea what that advice was. The relationship with that retainer up until yesterday — is blank.
  5. The retainer immediately notices the PC's change. Is saddened. "…You seem to have forgotten something. Do you remember who I am?"
  6. The PC gives an awkward answer. The retainer quietly withdraws.
  7. In subsequent sessions — rebuilding the relationship with that retainer becomes a sub-plot. Can the PC recover what was lost? Or begin a new relationship?

Side event: The cost of Reduction gives the PC player real feelings of loss in this scenario. The GM treats this loss carefully — neither overly harshly nor overly easily.

#§ School and Long-term Campaign Impact

#Return to Scorching Heat Hell

A Shonetsu-ryu PC — perceives visions of ash at every lull.

SituationEffect
Lull recovery check+1 bonus (body becomes lighter) — but this is a warning: "Your body is already drawing close to ash"
Passing near Scorching Heat HellYoma hostility -1 + occasional ash in the PC's footprints (description)
Within 24 hours after hellfire useA faint burnt smell in the PC's breath — detectable by other NPCs
After 1st secret art useFirst loss complete. Part of the PC's body (some hair, nails, etc.) permanently grays
After 2nd secret art usePart of the PC's skin turns grey. Attracts notice in human society (Negotiation -1 permanent).
After 3rd secret art useAshing process accelerates. Long-term play failure trigger — the PC itself is a signal of campaign conclusion.

#Warning on Cumulative Secret Art Use

The Shonetsu-ryu secret art "Reduction" has a natural recovery ceiling of 1 per combat + 1 per campaign. A 2nd use is possible, but the cost is severe. From the 3rd use onward, the PC gradually becomes like Kaikou — burning away their sense of lifespan and becoming a permanent being in ash form. This is a campaign-conclusion signal similar to a Renown Title (though it is not a Renown Title — it is Shonetsu-ryu's own path).

The GM must inform the PC player of this point in advance. Before the 2nd secret art use, give the warning that "if you use it again next time, the character will gradually disappear."

#Ash Management — Ecological Responsibility

A Shonetsu-ryu PC bears responsibility for the ash they create. If ash is neglected — a "Revived Ash" event occurs in the campaign's latter half. The ash of yoma reduced in the past — awakens somewhere in a ruin and becomes a new yoma. This is a crisis that arises from the PC's responsibility.

If ash is properly managed (burial, sealing, flowing into a river, etc.) this event does not occur. However, if the PC is busy with activity it is difficult to manage all the ash — priorities must be set.

#Kaikou's Dissolution

When Kaikou completes the secret art transmission to the PC — he finally burns himself and dissolves. The fire in his khakkhara goes out, and only ash remains. This dissolution scene is great drama. The PC inherits Kaikou's khakkhara. Now it is the PC's responsibility to guard the fire in the khakkhara.

#§ Expulsion Rules — When Loss Is Refused

#Expulsion Triggers

Loss-related ActionResult
Refusing loss when using the secret art (refusing to pay the cost)Technique activation fails. 5 Energy expended. Secret art unusable until next combat.
Forcing use of technique without readiness to loseDisordered hellfire — 1 random ally in the relevant Zone instead loses a memory fragment (GM rolls). Causes conflict within the party.
Attempting to use Shonetsu-ryu techniques effectively against human targetsKaikou's wrath — school check -3 (permanent).
Dozens of uses while completely neglecting ash managementRevived Ash event repeats. Kaikou abandons the PC. Readmission impossible.

#Readmission

Shonetsu-ryu is the hell school with the most difficult readmission. Kaikou has likely already dissolved, and there is no other teacher.

The only readmission path: the PC themselves becomes a new teacher, transmits their own khakkhara to another disciple, and dissolves following Kaikou's path. This path is the PC's self-sacrifice.

#§ Fellow Practitioners and Rivals

#Fellow Practitioners — Kaikou's Lineage

Kaikou's own teacher before him has already become ash. Kaikou himself is becoming ash. The PC is likely Kaikou's last disciple. This loneliness is the characteristic of Shonetsu-ryu.

The ghosts of those who once received a brief transmission from Kaikou but failed the test and perished — occasionally appear before the PC. They are less "fellow practitioners" and more "ghosts of seniors." They warn the PC, or sometimes tempt the PC (urging them to use it more).

#Rivals — Shonetsu-ryu's Natural Enemies

Shonetsu-ryu is a technique of reduction, and targets that are not reduced are its natural enemies.

Rival School/TechniqueReason
Hanyo bloodline (Renown Title "Arch-Yoma")A being that moves between the borders of Humanity and yoma nature. Shonetsu hellfire does not clearly take effect. At reduction, the PC only loses more.
Tsuchimikado (Curse/Astronomy)Curses are not the yoma's body but a spiritual connection — burning with hellfire leaves the curse intact while the PC weakens
Shugendo (Mountain Exorcism)Philosophical opposition between nature technique and hellfire technique — though direct combat clashes are rare

#§ GM Operation Hints

#Loss Is the Material of Story

What the PC has lost is not a mere penalty. It is the beginning of a new narrative. If the PC has lost the teacher's face — the scene where that teacher appears again and introduces themselves to the PC is drama. If the PC has lost memories with a retainer — that retainer tries to meet the PC again and rebuild the relationship.

The GM does not discard what was lost, but weaves it back into the story.

#Respect Kaikou's Weight

Kaikou is not a simple teacher NPC. He is already nearly a mythic being. His appearances should be rare, and his words must carry weight. If Kaikou appears frequently — his mythic quality is consumed. Approximately 3–5 appearances in one campaign is appropriate.

#Gamify Ash Management

Managing the ash the PC has reduced can be handled as a small mini-game within the session. "What will you do with this ash?" Options: burial, flow into a river, collection in a sealed box, scatter on the wind. The long-term results of each choice differ.

#Negotiate the Secret Art's Cost with the Player

The "loss" when the Shonetsu-ryu secret art is used is best agreed upon in advance through an out-of-session conversation with the player. What can be lost, what is an interesting loss for the player — this conversation enriches the drama of the campaign's latter half.

#§ Derived Techniques — Variations by the Nature of Loss

#Variations by Type of Loss

The staging of Shonetsu-ryu and the tendency of heart shifts change depending on the nature of the declared loss.

Loss TypeVariation NameHellfire ColorHeart Tendency
Loss of memory (specific memory lost)Thought-Fire (念火)Ash-brown flame眞 direction strengthened
Loss of relationship (memories with a specific person)Bond-Fire (緣火)Blue-grey flame眞 or Compassion (慈)
Loss of skill (1-step skill decrease)Finesse-Fire (技火)Deep grey flameNo Heart strengthened
Loss of background (clan/origin elements)Origin-Fire (源火)Flame mixed with red ash眞 or Void (虛)
Loss of sense (part of a specific sense)Sense-Fire (感火)Near-transparent flameNo Heart or Void (虛)

The type of loss is chosen by the PC player. Each type — creates a different form of "deficiency" in the subsequent campaign. Loss of memory is severance from the past, loss of relationship is severance from the present, loss of skill is reduction of ability, loss of background is transformation of identity, loss of sense is change in world perception.

#Kaikou's Hidden Counsel

Kaikou leaves — one final piece of counsel to the PC after completing the secret art transmission.

"You can use it as many times as you wish. But — decide the number of those times beforehand. If you do not decide, you will become ash without knowing it. Like me."

A PC who takes this counsel seriously — makes a promise to themselves. "In this campaign I will use the secret art only X times." This promise is the player's self-discipline, and is not enforced. However — a player who keeps this promise gains better control in the campaign's latter half.

#What Kaikou Guards — An Unseen Being

When Kaikou says at the ruined temple that he "guards what has already disappeared," what that is remains unspecified. After the PC has built a long relationship — Kaikou can tell them once.

"What I guard is the ash of my first disciple. His ash is buried beneath a small stone behind that temple. If I leave this place, that ash scatters on the wind — and he truly disappears. That is why I remain here."

A PC who hears this confession — understands Shonetsu-ryu's true weight. Loss is not the end. Guarding what has been lost is — a harder thing than not losing it.

After this scene, the PC — feels the duty to manage the ash of the yoma they have reduced more heavily. The narrative cost of management failure grows larger.

#§ Ash Management — Detailed Rules

#Methods of Ash Storage

The ash of yoma the PC has reduced — requires management after each session. Main management methods:

MethodEffectDifficulty
Burial in earthStable. Left buried long-term, purity (淨) energy takes root in that place.Easy (choose one Zone)
Flow into riverAsh dissolves in water. Stable but no purity energy.Easy
Collection in sealed boxGathers ash in one place. Space required. Risk of seal weakening with large-scale collection.Moderate (sealed box must be crafted)
Scatter on windAsh disperses. Convenient but — Revived Ash event probability increases.Very easy
Donate to templeTemple monks manage it. Most stable.Moderate (temple relationship required)

#Revived Ash Event

If ash management is neglected — an event activates in the campaign's latter half. Probability varies by management method.

Accumulated Management MethodEvent Activation Probability (per session)
Almost all burial/donationAlmost none (under 5%)
Half-and-half managementModerate (10%)
Almost all scatteringHigh (25% or more)

When the event activates: 1 of the yoma the PC has reduced in the past — awakens from ash and forms as a new yoma. Weaker than the original (70% of original Wounds), but comes seeking the PC. Includes a grudge against the PC. A combat or pursuit battle of 1-session scale is added.

#Ash Repose — 3 Stages

If ash is well managed — "repose" is reached through 3 stages.

StageConditionEffect
Stage 11 campaign season since ash was buriedA faint purity energy in that Zone. Yoma Approach -1
Stage 21 ritual (PC's prayer) over the ashPurity energy spreads. That Zone becomes a "purified ground." Exorcism check +1 (that Zone only).
Stage 3Practice in the purified ground for 1 or more roundsPC's Exorcism check +1 (that Zone only, permanent). Also, if the PC dies in that Zone — possibility of revival (GM discretion)

Stage 3 is a very rare attainment, but it is a narrative reward for the PC to have "their own purified ground" at the end of the campaign.

#§ Shonetsu-ryu's Relationship with Other Hell Schools

#Contrast with Toukatsu-ryu

Toukatsu-ryu is rising; Shonetsu-ryu is disappearing. An extreme contrast. Giving both schools to the same PC — amplifies inner contradiction. One who seeks to rise while seeking to disappear — this is a state of mental fracture. The GM decides whether to use this as drama, or to recommend only one school.

#Combination with Kokujo-ryu

Black Rope (黒縄) is principle; Shonetsu is loss. If one PC holds both schools — they are structured to keep principles while also accepting loss. This is close to a stable combination. Principle defines the PC's "what is kept," and Shonetsu-ryu defines "what is discarded." The separation of the two functions is clear.

#Contrast with Kyoukan-ryu

Kyoukan-ryu is a technique of maintenance; Shonetsu is a technique of loss. The philosophical opposition is greatest. Giving these two schools to the same PC — leads to seeking to maintain while seeking to lose. This is not a psychologically sustainable state. The GM does not recommend this combination, or handles it only as short-term drama.

#Succession to Mugen Path

When a Shonetsu-ryu PC reaches 10th dan and chooses Mugen Path — the path of loss leads to the path of transcending existence. If Shonetsu-ryu is "losing little by little," Mugen Path is "already nothing." This succession is natural. Kaikou's path itself — is close to the progression of Shonetsu-ryu → Mugen Path.

Kaikou himself — does not hold official Mugen Path, but his state is effectively close to Mugen Path. He is "one who burned away their sense of lifespan." A PC following Kaikou's path to enter Mugen Path — is the most meaningful succession narrative.

#§ Detailed Combat Situations — Shonetsu-ryu Application Examples

#Situation A — Hellfire Finger, First Memory Lost

PC (Exorcism 3 pts, Shonetsu-ryu Licensed). Before first secret art — License use only. Declared "readiness to lose": "The memory of my father's first teaching."

Combat: 1 yoma (Veteran-grade) invades around the domain.

Round 1:

  • PC declares Hellfire Finger (3 Energy, 1 breath). Veteran as target.
  • 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+2 vs Defense 18 → success. 2 Wounds + hellfire mark.
  • Veteran has Energy +1 penalty when taking actions this breath.
  • GM: "This technique use fades 1 of your memory fragments. Your 'readiness to lose' is not yet released — this is simple License use, so it is a small memory other than the episode you designated in advance."
  • The PC receives the GM's designation. "The face of a childhood friend grows indistinct. You remember the name but the face does not surface."

Round 2:

  • Veteran's attacks weaken from Energy expenditure. PC finishes with a normal attack. Veteran Wounds 0. Immediately reduced to ash.
  • Ash: grey ash remains on the ground.
  • PC says a brief prayer — "Even this ash had a name." GM determination: this ritual performed → 眞 +1 (in service of truth).

Narrative staging: After the Veteran is annihilated, a small Ash Pile remains. The PC closes their eyes briefly — at that moment feels a small Void of "I cannot remember a certain friend's face."

#Situation B — Reduction, Major Loss

Campaign climax. PC (Exorcism 4 pts, Shonetsu-ryu secret art). Chapter 5 late phase. A yoma horde attacks the Domain Barrier.

The PC has not used the secret art until now. "Readiness to lose" declaration: "All memories over the past 1 year with one of the domain's retainers (Elite Masakazu)."

Yoma: 1 Elite, 2 Veteran, 3 Minion.

Round 1:

  • PC declares "Reduction" (5 Energy, 1 per combat). "Loss" reconfirmed — 1 year with Masakazu.
  • All 6 yoma within 2 Zones as targets.
  • Checks:
  • Elite: 2d10+Wisdom+Exorcism+3 vs Defense 20 → success. 3 Wounds + hellfire mark. Elite not immediately reduced.
  • Veteran 1: success. Immediately reduced to ash.
  • Veteran 2: success. Immediately reduced to ash.
  • 3 Minions: each check succeeds. Immediately reduced to ash.
  • GM determination: 眞 +1 (in service of the truth of domain protection).

Round 2:

  • Only Lord-grade remains. Wounds reduction proceeds. Party collectively brings Elite's Wounds to 0. Reduced to ash.
  • Combat ends. 6 piles of ash. PC barely standing.

Narrative aftermath:

  • Return to domain during lull. Masakazu greets the PC. "…My lord? What is wrong? Do you remember where we met?"
  • The PC freezes. All of Masakazu-related memories from 1 year ago until now are a blank.
  • Masakazu with a hurt expression: "It seems the counsel I gave you — was meaningless."
  • Another PC explains the situation. In subsequent sessions, reconstruction of the relationship between the PC and Masakazu begins.

Narrative staging: At the moment of Reduction, a massive circle of hellfire surrounds the PC. 6 yoma each reduced to ash. Ash piles up quietly on the ground. The PC in that instant — realizes they can remember only the name "Masakazu" and cannot picture the face. They want to cry — but even the memory of what crying feels like has grown faint.

#Situation C — Ash Management Neglect → Revived Ash Event

The PC uses Reduction 10 times during the campaign. 7 of those are handled by "scattering on the wind" (management neglect). Only 3 donated to the temple.

GM dice: Each session 25% probability of Revived Ash event — activates after 3 sessions.

Event scenario: 1 Veteran yoma the PC once reduced — re-forms in a rock crevice at the domain's Flank Zone. Weaker than the original (Wounds 3, original Wounds 5), but approaches with a grudge against the PC.

  • This yoma attacks the domain entrance. It cannot pass through the Barrier — but engages with the guard squad.
  • PC party deploys. Combat begins.
  • This time proper management is essential. The PC resolves to donate the ash to the temple this time.

Narrative staging: The yoma looks at the PC and says "You are trying to send me again. This time do not discard my ash." The PC realizes their own negligence. An opportunity for narrative growth.

#Situation D — Kaikou's Final Counsel

Near the campaign's final session. The PC has already used the secret art 1 time. Is facing a final battle where they need to use it again.

Kaikou's visit:

  • PC visits the ruined temple. Kaikou waits. Already mostly in ash form.
  • Kaikou: "You intend to use it again this time. Do you know you will become like me?"
  • The PC's answer matters here.
  • Choice 1: "I know, but this battle is important." → Kaikou nods. +1 bonus on the next Reduction.
  • Choice 2: "Is there no way to avoid using it?" → Kaikou presents alternatives. Other techniques, party member support, etc.
  • Choice 3: "I don't mind if my body becomes ash." → Kaikou is silent. No Heart +1 or Void +1. This is the direction Kaikou worries about.
  • Kaikou passes the small fire from his khakkhara to the PC's khakkhara one more time. The fire in the PC's khakkhara brightens slightly. "I respect your decision."

Narrative staging: Even with half of Kaikou's body already ash — he is tranquil. A final smile to the PC. "Go. Whatever you become — you are you." This phrase is imprinted in the PC. A narrative moment immediately before the campaign's conclusion.

#§ Shonetsu-ryu Ritual Implements, Attire, and Symbols

#Symbolic Tool — The Khakkhara of the Small Fire

A Shonetsu-ryu practitioner inherits a khakkhara from Kaikou. At the khakkhara's tip is an inextinguishable small fire. Normally a weak fire of about 1 candle's brightness, but it expands when hellfire is used.

If the khakkhara is lost, Shonetsu-ryu secret art checks -3 (permanent, if Kaikou cannot provide a new khakkhara). After Kaikou has dissolved, if the khakkhara is lost — the PC must make their own khakkhara. The cooperation of a blacksmith and a monk is required (each Target Number 18 crafting check).

The moment of khakkhara succession is the PC's acquisition of the secret art. This scene is very solemn. Kaikou hands over his khakkhara, and the fire moves to the tip of the PC's khakkhara. Kaikou's khakkhara afterward becomes an ordinary wooden stick — and Kaikou soon enters preparation for dissolution.

#Attire Changes

PeriodAttire Change
Novice to LicensedOrdinary monk/shugenja attire
Start of License useFaint grey in part of beard and eyebrows
After 1st secret art useNails grey. Faint permanent ash marks on part of the skin (back of hands, etc.)
After 2nd secret art useConsiderable portion of skin turns grey. Attracts notice in human society (Negotiation -1 permanent)
After 3rd secret art useMostly grey. PC is in "half-ash state" — campaign conclusion at this point

These changes are gradual but definite. The GM updates the PC's visual description every session.

#Ritual — The First Fire Ceremony

At Shonetsu-ryu Novice initiation, the PC performs a ritual. Kaikou passes one spark from the small fire of his khakkhara into the PC's hand. The PC must swallow that spark — or, must keep it from going out in their own palm.

This spark is fire but is not hot (it does not burn the PC). However, it always leaves a subtle warmth in the PC's body. Afterward the PC's body temperature is about half a degree lower than an ordinary person (the process of becoming ash). A difference that another NPC can notice if they hold the PC's hand.

#Ash Ritual — After Each Reduction

A Shonetsu-ryu practitioner — must perform a brief ritual every time they reduce a yoma with hellfire. A simple prayer: "Even this ash had a name." About 20 seconds.

If a habit of skipping this ritual develops — the PC accumulates heart shifts strongly in the No Heart direction. If the ritual is performed with care — 眞/Compassion direction accumulates. The GM does not observe this choice at every reduction, but confirms the overall accumulated tendency at session end.

#§ Closing — On Ash

Shonetsu-ryu is the school of those who lose. While sending yoma, one also sends oneself little by little. One who has learned this school — will someday become ash themselves. This is not failure but completion.

"To burn is to send. What remains after the sending — that is the true subject of this school."

Kaikou repeated these words all his life. And now, leaving these words for his last disciple — he is preparing to become ash himself.

The ash that remains in your body — is what you have sent. You do not forget them. But — you accept that you yourself will soon be like them. This acceptance is the true attainment of this school. Without fear, yet not without heart — holding fire in that quiet place in between.

This is the law of Shonetsu.

You who are reflected in the mirror of Shonetsu (焦熱), you are the sender and the one being sent. The hands that handle ash walk the path of becoming ash themselves. But remember — in Kaikou's small smile — that this path is not tragedy alone. To lose is not to be robbed. It is to give. And the hands of the giver are freer than the hands of the receiver.
