#Training-Method Framework

Contents

Not a school. The core 04-character/skills/04-07-dedicated.md states that "dedicated skills are by default not subject to schools." This section adheres to that convention and newly establishes a separate concept called the training method (修行法).

#§ Scent — Why It Is Not a School

A dedicated skill is a special skill in 1:1 correspondence with an attribute. It is not "a discipline that can be learned from outside" like Swordsmanship or Sorcery — it is inner cultivation that arises within oneself. So the core forbids a school system.

Yet a campaign often wants to say "this person is no ordinary warrior — they have done some deeper cultivation." So this expansion newly establishes training methods (修行法) in place of schools.

A training method is one person's inner self rather than a dojo, oneself rather than a master, a lifetime of cultivation rather than a license.

#§ Law — The Conventions of Training Methods

#1. Difference From Schools

AxisSchool (10~19)Training Method (20)
unitdojo · house · sectpersonal cultivation
structureLicensed · secret-art maneuvers1 core effect (aptitude)
masterexternal master · senioroneself or a fragmentary teacher
recognitionofficial license issuanceinformal — self-certification
learning time1~3 dana lifetime after Master (4 points)

#2. Approach Conditions

Every training method:

  • holds Master (4 points) or above in the relevant dedicated skill
  • additional condition: a narrative background for each training method (background · Renown Title · region · religion · experience, etc.)
  • time: 5 or more sessions of cultivation within the campaign (in a suitable environment)

A PC below Master may "attempt training" but the effect does not manifest.

#3. Effect Limit (★ no encroachment on the core Saint stage)

  • Effects stay within a bound that does not unlock the core Saint (5 points, Tatsujin-only) stage.
  • Narrative · limited benefits only. Numeric bonuses are small or restricted.
  • When stacking with class techniques, Renown Titles, and oni-relics, only 1 applies (balance safeguard).
  • A maximum of 1 simultaneous training method per PC (emphasis on focus).

#4. Training-Method Types (a classification separate from the 4 school types)

TypeDescription
Personal Transmission (一子相傳)1 to 1 master-to-disciple transmission. A very narrow lineage.
Self-Taught Cultivation (獨學修養)solitary self-honing. No master.
Oral Mind-Method (口傳心法)small-group oral transmission. Limited to a house or society.
Foreign Training (異國修行)overseas tradition. Foreign Adaptation or origin background recommended.

#5. Form of Presentation

Each training method is composed of the following 5 elements:

  1. Type (from the 4 types above)
  2. Cultural origin (source)
  3. Approach condition (Master + additional)
  4. Main effect [aptitude] (narrative · limited)
  5. Achievement narrative (the PC's change upon completion)

A training-method file provides only 1 core [aptitude] without Licensed/secret-art maneuvers.

#6. Use of Renown Titles · Oni-Relics · Scenarios

  • Training methods can be extended via core Renown Title branching · oni-relic use · scenario rules
  • Example: upon completing the Fighting Spirit training method "Zen Seated Meditation," branching to the Renown Title "Path of the Zen Monk" becomes possible
  • Some oni-relics and foreign Divine Treasures gain strengthened effects when a specific training method is held (part of 45-foreign-relics)

#7. Core-Convention Adherence Checklist

  • [ ] No founding of schools — a training method is not a school. No Licensed/secret art.
  • [ ] Prerequisite of Master stage or above — a PC below Master gains no effect.
  • [ ] No encroachment on the Saint stage — effects stay only at the Master + α level.
  • [ ] Stacking applies 1 — only 1 when stacking with class techniques, Renown Titles, and oni-relics.
  • [ ] 1 at a time per PC — one PC may have only 1 simultaneous training method.

#§ Design Perspective

  • Strict observance of core conventions: this framework explicitly adheres to the core 04-07-dedicated.md conventions. It blocks the risk of violation.
  • Clear distinction from schools: absence of Licensed/secret art. Only 1 core aptitude. When writing, take care that a training method does not turn into something like a school.
  • A narrative tool: a training method's core is narrative branching rather than numeric bonuses. The GM uses it for campaign depth.
  • Foreign · multicultural: emphasis on the foreign-training type — consistent with this expansion's identity.

"A gate stands by license. Cultivation stands by one's own breath. Breath cannot be taught."
