#Edo Yoma

Contents

Canon. New yoma and variants of existing yoma needed for Edo-era campaigns.

#Scent — Yoma Raised by the City

Edo's yoma grow not from mounds of battlefield dead but from the mouths of the people. When Kaidan are repeated, prints are sold, and the theater curtain rises, a yoma acquires its form. The Hundred-Tale Society collects those forms and imposes order on the city's nights.

#Law — Using Yoma Data

  • The stats below follow the co-08-02 format. They do not replace existing yoma; they provide variants needed for Edo-type incidents only.
  • Urban yoma are placed alongside their sightings, locations, names, and rumors — not just their combat stats.
  • Nurarihyon is the head of the yoma faction but should not be used only as the final adversary of every incident. Keep negotiation and mediation scenes available.

#Scene Commentary — Set the Yoma's Haunt First

Edo yoma carry a haunt and a name together. Nurarihyon sits at the head of someone else's house; the Okiku-type onryo is bound to a well and plates; Mokumokuren makes the house itself its body. Before pulling out the data, establish where the yoma is remembered — that deepens the scene.

Urban yoma are not all targets to kill and eliminate. Some are dangerous but maintain the rules of the city's night; some onryo will only disappear when their grudge is resolved. A yoma the Hundred-Tale Society has touched leaves name-and-rumor cleanup after the fight ends.

Yoma placement questions:

  • At what location does this yoma grow strongest?
  • Who is spreading this yoma's name?
  • Is there a way to resolve rather than exterminate?

#Session Use — Give the Name and Location Together

  • Opening scene: the yoma always appears first as a rumor attached to a specific location.
  • Complication: eliminating that yoma also erases one of the city's night rules.
  • Final question: will the PCs erase the yoma's name, or move the danger to another place and accept the risk?

#Nurarihyon (滑瓢) — Lord

An old-man yoma seated at the head of another's house, a sake cup and an empty folding screen.

#Scent

No one knows when he came in. He never knocked, never made a sound, yet somehow there is an old man seated at the head of the room, pouring tea. His head trails back into the shape of a long gourd, and his silk robe is one grade finer than the master of this house's own. Everyone who sees him falls into the same illusion — was this elder always the master of this seat, and was I the guest?

His voice is low and unhurried. He never grows angry, never gives orders. He simply accepts the finest cushion and the warmest sake as though it were his due, and the people of the house, far from stopping him, fret that they cannot bring him anything better. When he leaves, only an empty bottle remains, and no one remembers what he said. They know only that one sliver of that night's fear is gone — as though someone swallowed it in their place.

A mansion, a bathhouse, a brothel quarter, a theater, a tenement. Wherever people gather and chatter, his seat at the head is there. Anyone who would cut him down first forgets why they drew the blade, and soon finds himself offering the old man a cup of tea instead. The way he governs the city's night is itself his weapon.

#Oiwa-type Onryo (於岩怨霊) — Elite

A single eye and flowing hair behind a theater curtain, the body dissolving into blank space.

#Scent

First the hair appears. Long black hair spills down from the ceiling, from behind a lantern, from the gap in a theater curtain. Then the face comes — one side lovely, the other ravaged by poison, the eye so swollen it cannot close. That face bears silent witness to the truth that the powder and the poison given to her by the man who betrayed her in life came from the same hand. Below the waist she dissolves into darkness, formless.

To those who are not the targets of her grudge she appears as a grieving woman; to those who are, she fills the entire ceiling with her face. She grows strongest where something reflects — a mirror, a lantern, a stage curtain. Where she appears, the rank smell of medicine lingers, and the more her story passes from mouth to mouth among those who saw her, the clearer she becomes. Cutting her down does not end it — she vanishes only when the grudge is resolved, or when every mouth that remembers her has been closed.

Special:

  • Kaidan's Cast: When appearing in a theater, brothel quarter, or mansion, witness rumors grow with each lull phase. The GM may introduce the Hundred-Tale Society or shogunate censors in the next scene.

#Okiku-type Plate Onryo (お菊怨霊) — Elite

Okiku plate-spirit: long wet hair over a well rim into white, a pale hand counting porcelain plates, the tenth place an empty void; no gore

#Scent

When the night grows deep, the sound of counting plates rises from the bottom of the well. One, two, three... and after she counts to nine she pauses a single beat, then breaks off into the weeping of a woman who cannot find the one that is missing. Her wet hair hanging loose, she rises slowly, one hand braced on the well's rim, and from her fingertips water falls without cease. She grips a broken plate in one hand, yet anything that hand touches slips away and shatters.

She is bound to the false charge that drove her to her death — a single vanished plate. Until that one plate is returned to its place, she rises again over the well the next night no matter how many times she is cut down. Wells, canals, and the flooded courtyards of mansions are her domain. The first impression is closer to sorrow than to terror, but that single beat of silence when the count halts at nine sends a chill down the spine of anyone who hears it.

Special:

  • One Is Missing: Until one item from the incident is returned to its place, after being incapacitated the onryo reappears in the next lull phase with 1 Wound. Ends with exorcism or grudge resolution.

#Noppera-bo (野箆坊) — Veteran

#Scent

Ask the way of a traveler standing with his back to you, and the face that turns to answer has no eyes, no nose, no mouth. There is only smooth, blank skin that catches the lantern light in a soft round glow. The next person you flee to, startled, turns slowly with the same face, and so does the one after that. When they infiltrate in a group, even witnesses can never afterward recall how many there were. Their weapon lies not in claws but in shattering the very belief that one person can recognize another.

Wounds 2, Defense 12. Domination +3 (squad of 3).

Techniques:

  • Faceless [Kata] — when commanding. 2d10+Presence vs target 2d10+Courage. A failing target takes attack target designation -1 for 1 breath.
  • Witness Replacement [Stance] — while held. When the squad is in Infiltration state, ordinary witnesses cannot accurately recall the number of Noppera-bo.

#Mokumokuren (目目連) — Veteran

Mokumokuren: a torn shoji and wood-grain wall, dozens of small eyes opening in the tears and knots; no creature body

#Scent

You take the old paper screens of an abandoned house for merely dark — until the moment you realize that small eyes have sprouted across them panel by panel, and your spine goes rigid. In every torn hole in the paper, every knot in the wood, every crack in the wall, pupils crowd in and track the intruder all at once. Beneath those hundreds of unblinking stares, no footstep and no held breath can be hidden. Mokumokuren has no separate body — the house itself is its body. So when the walls collapse and the pillars burn, those eyes go dark along with them.

Wounds 2, Defense 13. Domination +3 (1 haunted house or mansion).

Techniques:

  • Eyes in the Walls [Stance] — while held. Enemies inside the same building take -2 to Infiltration checks.
  • Oppressive Gaze [Kata] — when commanding. All targets in the designated zone make a Courage roll. Failing targets pay +1 Energy for their next move.

Special:

  • One with the House: Immediately incapacitated if the building catches fire or a main wall collapses.

#Jorogumo (絡新婦) — Elite

Jorogumo: an elegant kimono shoulder in profile, silk threads off-frame resolving into faint spider-legs, a beckoning fingertip

#Scent

Beside a bridge railing, or where the spray of a waterfall wets the eaves, at the bend in the road where a person glances away for a moment — she is always there first. Anyone who glimpses the extra pair of legs beneath the silk-sheened hem of her robe does not live to speak of it. Her voice is low and warm, tender just enough to make the listener lower the bar across the heart. Whoever meets her first feels not danger but attraction.

The web is invisible. Only, after speaking with her, the feet grow a little heavier, and the direction of the way home keeps slipping out of mind. Brothel quarters and bridges and watersides — the places where people keep allure and death close at hand are her hunting ground. While she smiles, her opponent cannot turn his gaze elsewhere, and in that span the unseen thread has already wound once around the ankle.

Special:

  • Predator of Bridges and Brothels: When appearing at a bridge, waterfall, brothel quarter, or inn, Domination +1 for the first round.

#Mikoshi-nyudo (見越入道) — Elite

Mikoshi-nyudo: a tiny traveler at the base looking up, the monk's form telescoping off the top of the frame, only the hem and long neck

#Scent

In the dark of a mountain pass or a highway, at first it seems only a small monk has stepped out to block the road. But the more you look up at it, the larger it grows. The higher you follow it with your gaze, the more its neck stretches and its shoulders swell, until at last a black shadow that blots out the sky looks down upon you from overhead. As the neck of the one looking up bends back, that shadow slowly presses down from above.

Night roads and passes, checkpoints — places where a person must halt and peer upward are its stage. The trick has been handed down from of old: do not follow it up as it grows, but cry "I have seen it all" first and look down upon it from above, and it shrinks. To anyone who does not know the trick, Mikoshi-nyudo is the endlessly growing night itself.

Special:

  • Look Up and Lose: If a PC knows Mikoshi-nyudo's true nature and creates a scene of "looking down first or calling its name," Mikoshi-nyudo's Presence rolls take -2 for the first round.

#Akaname Variant

Scent: A small yoma that crouches in the corners of bathhouses and kitchens on the nights when people sleep, licking up old grime and mold with its long tongue. It dwells only where filth has piled up, and once that place is made clean it quietly disappears.

Akaname receives no separate stat block in this volume. When the filth of a bathhouse, kitchen, or sewer — or neglected grime — is the cause of an incident, use co lower-tier tsukumogami or lower-tier yoma data with only the following variants added.

  • Grime-Lick: During the lull phase, remove one filthy-location gimmick. If the removed gimmick was a grudge or poison, Akaname's next roll +1.
  • Filthy Slide: First movement-obstruction roll in a bathhouse, sewer, or kitchen +1.

"Edo's yoma feed on names before blood, and linger in rumor long after the blade."
