#Outside Deities — Entry Set
Contents
Canon — Outside deity values. The values of the gods below are based on their original system. When they operate within Japan, apply the principle of attenuation (a drop of 1 step) from
fc01-03-00-foreign-index.md. Cthulhu is an exception under the special clause.
#Lovecraftian Lineage — Cthulhu
#Scent
Cthulhu. The center of cosmic horror created by the 20th-century American writer H.P. Lovecraft. He sleeps in the deep-sea city of R'lyeh and awakens when the alignment of the stars is right. An alien Outer God / Great Old One that cannot be understood within the categories of human or god.
His form is a composite shape of a giant cephalopod, dragon, and human — merely seeing his exact form is madness. His dreams mix into human sleep, and now and then an artist or a madman draws and leaves behind his figure.
In the setting of Konsei Reiyotan (混世霊妖譚), one can set it that one of the otherworld gates opened by the trembling of the Spirit Realm was the gate of the Cthulhu system.
"He is not dead. He is merely dreaming. The day that dream ends is to be feared." — The Necronomicon
#Law
#Base Values
- Divinity: fixed at 4, Great God (special — attenuation is not applied)
- Domains: 3
#Domains and Divine Authority
| Domain | Divine Authority |
|---|---|
| Deep Sea | Summons of the Deep — temporarily converts one zone into the underwater deep sea (the target makes breath and pressure checks). |
| Madness | The Price of Looking — a target who sees Cthulhu makes a madness save. On failure, Wounds -N (mental blow) and a state of being unable to think (cannot act for N rounds). |
| Sleeping Dream | Manipulation of Dreams — enters a target's dream and manipulates it. |
#Special Clause (Canon - Re-emphasized)
- Combat impossible. Only "encounter, evasion, madness save," with no checks.
- No return. Does not move for years at a time.
- If a PC tries to "defeat" Cthulhu, the GM provides no victory condition at all — the scenario is survival, sealing, evasion.
#GM Note
Cthulhu is a being who breaks the game system. Do not handle him with the ordinary combat rules; use him only as the shock of an encounter scene. 1 encounter changes a PC's life.
The Japanese gods, too, are powerless outside their own fields before Cthulhu. However, Izanami's Yomi Domain overlaps with Cthulhu's "Sleeping Dream" and is the only field that can counter him — "Dream and death are sisters."
#Greek Mythology — The Guests of Olympus
#Scent
The gods of Greece are too human. And so, when they come to Japan, they look like gods who are too human — they have dignity, but that dignity is not quiet like the gods of Japan. They hurl thunderbolts, love, envy, and deceive.
"The gods of Olympus speak with thunder. The gods of Japan speak with silence." — A comparison of foreign divinities
They usually reach Japan as tradition carried aboard the ships of the Nanban. There is almost no actual offering; they are sustained by the prayers of sailors and merchants alone.
#Zeus — Ζεύς
Scent: King of the 12 gods of Olympus. Thunder, sky, kingship, the oath. The supreme god who guarantees the order of the human world. Famous for countless tales of love and offspring.
Law:
- Original Divinity: 5, Imperial God / Attenuation within Japan: 4, Great God
- 4 Domains: Thunder/Sky - Kingship/Justice - The Oath - Hospitality to Strangers
- Divine Authority:
- Thunder → 1 thunderbolt (lightning strike).
- Kingship → automatically succeeds rule and command checks.
- The Oath → automatically detects a broken oath and triggers its punishment.
- Hospitality to Strangers → automatically succeeds the checks of travelers and merchants.
#Hades — Ἅιδης
Scent: Zeus's brother. King of the underworld (the netherworld). Cold and composed, but not evil. A judge who rules the souls of the dead with fairness. His wife is Persephone.
Law:
- Original Divinity: 4, Great God / Attenuation within Japan: 3, Middle God
- 3 Domains: The Netherworld - Wealth (riches underground) - Quiet Fairness
- Divine Authority:
- The Netherworld → summons the souls of the dead.
- Wealth → detects the location of ore veins and treasure.
- Quiet Fairness → automatic checks for judgment and verdict.
- Note: Domain overlap with Izanami — both govern the land of the dead. Within Japan, Izanami takes priority. Hades sits quietly as "an immigrant within Japan."
#Apollo — Ἀπόλλων
Scent: Zeus's son. Sun, prophecy, music, medicine, the bow. The god of the Delphic oracle. A symbol of sculpture-like beauty.
Law:
- Original Divinity: 4, Great God / Attenuation within Japan: 3, Middle God
- 4 Domains: The Sun (Greek style) - Prophecy/Oracle - Music/Poetry - Medicine
- Divine Authority:
- The Sun → automatic checks of light (however, overlaps with Amaterasu — does not work within Japan).
- Prophecy → 1 hint of the future (Greater Divine Authority).
- Music → automatic checks for art and negotiation.
- Medicine → automatically succeeds healing checks.
- Note: Within Japan the Sun Domain is monopolized by Amaterasu — Apollo's Sun authority is blockaded. Only the remaining 3 Domains are active.
#Heracles — Ἡρακλῆς
Scent: Zeus's son. A hero born in a human body who performed the twelve labors and was elevated to a god. The archetype of the demigod → god elevation narrative. He is similar in grain to Japan's Susanoo — a hero-type Great God.
Law:
- Original Divinity: 3, Middle God / Attenuation within Japan: 2, Minor God
- 2 Domains: Monstrous Strength - Hero of Hardship
- Divine Authority:
- Monstrous Strength → a die fixed at 10 on physical strength checks.
- Hero of Hardship → automatic success 1 time when carrying out an "impossible labor" (a 1-per-lifetime Greater Divine Authority).
#Norse Mythology — The Gods of the Blizzard
#Scent
Odin, Thor, Loki. The gods of the blizzard and the Viking ship. Gods who came from the farthest place of all from Japan. A very few reached it by way of the Korean Peninsula along the northern trade routes of Siberia, Mongolia, and Russia.
Their story ends with Ragnarök — the doom of the gods. The gods of Japan begin from the "root" and endure forever, but the gods of the North are "gods with an end." This difference makes the difference in tone.
"The gods of a land where much snow falls are gods who know the end." — Northern tradition
#Odin — Óðinn
Scent: King of the Aesir gods. War, wisdom, magic, poetry, the dead. He sacrificed one of his eyes to drink the water of the well of wisdom. He keeps two ravens (Huginn and Muninn). Fated to be devoured and to die by Fenrir at Ragnarök.
When he comes to Japan, it is good to have him appear in the form of a "wandering old man."
Law:
- Original Divinity: 4, Great God / Attenuation within Japan: 3, Middle God
- 4 Domains: War (Norse style) - Wisdom/Letters (runes) - Magic (seidr) - The Calling of the Dead
- Divine Authority:
- War → automatic morale checks.
- Wisdom → automatically succeeds checks of hidden knowledge and riddles.
- Magic → 1 hint of foresight.
- The Dead → summons the souls of the fallen (a rare Divine Authority).
#Thor — Þórr
Scent: Odin's son. Thunder, battle, the protection of farmers. With the hammer Mjolnir he smashes the giants.
Law:
- Original Divinity: 4, Great God / Attenuation within Japan: 3, Middle God
- 3 Domains: Thunder - Battle - Protection of Farmers
- Divine Authority:
- Thunder → 1 lightning strike.
- Battle → automatic Critical Hit on attack checks.
- Protection of Farmers → automatic checks to protect a village.
- Note: Domain overlap with Takemikazuchi (thunder) — within Japan, Takemikazuchi takes priority. Thor is only something like "a foreign brother from abroad."
#Loki — Loki
Scent: The trickster god. On the border between the Aesir gods and the giant race. Deceit, transformation, chaos. Ultimately the enemy at Ragnarök.
When he comes to Japan, he settles as a heretical, negative Middle God. He resembles Inari, but if Inari is "benevolent caprice," then Loki is "destructive mischief."
Law:
- Original Divinity: 3, Middle God / Attenuation within Japan: 2, Minor God
- 3 Domains: Deceit - Transformation - Catalyst of Chaos
- Divine Authority:
- Deceit → automatically succeeds checks to catch lies + strengthens his save against being seen through.
- Transformation → temporary transformation (similar to Inari's fox transformation, more extreme).
- Chaos → shakes an ordered structure once.
- Strong Tatarigami nature — within Japan he is treated almost as belonging to the side of the tatari.
#Indian Mythology
#Surya — सूर्य
Scent: The sun god of the Veda. He crosses the sky in a golden chariot drawn by seven horses. He was passed indirectly to Japan as well by the route of Buddhism's transmission.
There is already a "fragmented trace" in Japan through Buddhism. He is not a wholly foreign god, but it is rare for him to be enshrined as a divinity in his own right. He can appear under the premise of being summoned by a foreign Zen monk.
Law:
- Original Divinity: 4, Great God / Attenuation within Japan: 3, Middle God
- 3 Domains: The Sun (Indian style) - Healing - Revealing the Truth
- Divine Authority:
- The Sun → (because of overlap with Amaterasu, restricted in operation within Japan).
- Healing → automatically succeeds healing checks.
- Truth → automatic checks to see through lies and concealment.

#Scent — In One Sentence
"An Outside deity works at half within Japan. Because their shrines are not here, and those who know their words are rare."
