#Shinseiki Scenario Seeds
Contents
Scene Tool + Fiction-Only. Each seed provides only a skeleton expandable to 1–3 sessions. Numbers and developments are adjusted at the GM's discretion.
#Scent — Five Nights the Gods Stir
It is rare for a god to wield a blade directly. Instead — they move people. An old woman in a village, two samurai at war, the shadow of a fox at a ruined shrine, a holy image hidden underground, a bear coming south across the sea. The five seeds each begin at the moment a god lays a hand on one person's back.
Each seed is worth 1–3 sessions. You can draw it out into a long arc, or end it as a single-night one-act play.
#Seed 1 — The Hidden Ujigami
#Scent
Something strange is happening in the small village of Torikawa (鳥川). One old woman is uncannily immune to illness. No epidemic spreads near her, and her field never knows a lean year. The villagers think of her only as "the lucky grandmother."
The lord has heard this rumor. He wants that blessing for himself. Word arrives that the lord's cavalry has begun moving toward the village — they will arrive in three days.
"No one suspected her. She did not even suspect herself." — A candidate opening reading for the GM
#Rules
#Featured Gods
- Torikawa Ujigami — the old woman = herself. Divinity 2, Minor God. She does not know it.
- Domain: "Torikawa Village · Plague Repulsion"
- Divine Authority: automatically blocks plague and crop failure within the village.
- The lord — wants to take this "blessing" by conquest or detention. Samurai rank 5.
#Key Checks
- Can the PCs notice the old woman's true nature first (observation / spirit-sight check)?
- How will they respond when the lord's forces reach the village?
- Should they tell the old woman she is a god — the heaviest choice. The moment she is told, she may have to leave the village.
#Branches
| Branch | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Do not tell | The village stays protected, but the lord may yet kill or abduct her. |
| Tell | The old woman is moved to a shrine and the village's blessing is made official. But her "ordinary grandmother's life" is over. |
| Remove the lord | A war / assassination branch. The divine aid works only within the village. |

#Seed 2 — Hachiman on the Battlefield
#Scent
Two samurai prayed at the same Hachiman shrine before going to war. They belong to different daimyo, and tomorrow they must cut each other down.
That night, shards of Hachiman lodged in both of them. Hachiman is on no one's side. He merely watches over all who draw a bow.
The PCs are in the same unit as those two samurai, or stand as mediators, or are the retainer of one side. Tomorrow morning two bows take aim at each other.
"Hachiman is no one's ally. He is only the ally of those who keep their word." — A samurai house precept
#Rules
#Featured Gods
- Hachiman (Great God 4 / Domain: war, archery, protection of warriors, imperial legitimacy)
- In this scenario he sends two shards. Hachiman himself does not decide whose side to take.
- The two samurai — ranks 6 and 7 respectively + a Hachiman shard (Divinity 1–2).
#Key Checks
- The PCs are on one of the two samurai's sides, or mediators between both.
- How to resolve it when Hachiman's protection triggers for both at once on the battlefield.
- When the one bearing Hachiman's shard falls, where does that shard go?
#Branches
| Branch | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Take a side | The shard tilts toward the samurai on the PCs' side. The other shard is annihilated. |
| Mediation succeeds | The two samurai's duel is averted. Hachiman accepts both their oaths and binds them as a relationship that is no longer enemies. The shards coexist in both bodies. |
| Both fall | The shards return to Hachiman's main shrine. The PCs recall for the rest of their lives why they could not intervene. |

#Seed 3 — The Tatari-Turned Inari
#Scent
A small Inari shrine on the outskirts of Kyoto has fallen to ruin. Fox shadows appear in the village night after night, stealing food and bewitching people. Those who go to investigate do not return, or return having gained madness.
The Inari of this shrine was forgotten and betrayed. And Inari's "Change" domain has flipped toward Tatari. The grain domain became "starvation," the commerce domain "plunder," the change domain "phantoms of madness."
"A forgotten god quietly becomes a Tatari. Not out of wrath, but out of hunger." — An onmyoji's maxim
#Rules
#Featured Gods
- Inari (Great God 4 → mid-Tatari conversion, temporarily dropped to around Divinity 3)
- Domain mutations:
- "Grain" → Starvation
- "Change" → Phantoms of Madness
- "Commerce" → Plunder
- Class transition: arahitogami → Tatarigami (co class transition).
#Key Checks
- Investigate the reason Inari turned to Tatari (shrine destruction, priest's death, an oath of betrayal — which?).
- Speak with, seal, or purify the Tatari-state Inari?
- If purification is chosen: an Izanagi-line Misogi Sorcery is required (
fc01-04-00-divine-regalia-and-rites.md).
#Branches
| Branch | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Seal | Seal the Tatari Inari in an old torii. A stopgap. It will awaken someday. |
| Purification succeeds | Inari returns to its original form. But one of the PCs is bound to Inari for life. |
| Purification fails · Annihilation | The Tatari Inari is annihilated, but all grain and foxes of the region are absent for 3 years. |
| Dialogue succeeds | A way to release Inari's grudge is obtained (usually shrine restoration + avenging the priest). |

#Seed 4 — The Kirishitan's Holy Mother
#Scent
A Kirishitan community lives in hiding in a seaside village in Kyushu. It is not long after the ban on the faith was issued. A "Maria Kannon" statue is discovered beneath the village, and the sick who pray before it are miraculously recovering.
The lord's patrol regards this as a heretical faith and moves to subjugate it. A monk at a nearby temple — one in whom a shard of Fudo Myoo dwells — also denounces it as heresy. Yet the "Evil Repulsion" domains of Maria Kannon and Fudo Myoo actually overlap, creating a subtle tension.
"Kannon is Maria, and Maria is Kannon. Only while hidden." — A Kakure Kirishitan saying
#Rules
#Featured Gods
- Holy Mother Maria (Maria Kannon) — after the Outside-god attenuation, Middle God 3 · within Japan
- Domain: "Mercy · Motherhood · Refuge"
- Divine Authority: detection penalty for the community, healing of the sick, etc.
- The monk in whom a shard of Fudo Myoo dwells — holds a Middle God 3 shard.
- The "Evil Repulsion" domain overlaps with Maria's — the conflict must be resolved.
#Key Checks
- Stand with the Kirishitan community, with the lord and shogunate, or mediate?
- How is the domain conflict resolved between Maria Kannon and Fudo Myoo (the same field, but different traditions)?
- The moment the patrol reaches the village (there is a time limit).
#Branches
| Branch | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Protect the community | They succeed in hiding the Kirishitan. Maria Kannon's "Refuge" domain grows stronger. But they become wanted by the shogunate. |
| Informing | They report to the lord. The community is destroyed. Maria Kannon's shards remain scattered, drifting among several holy images. |
| Mediation · Private accord | A pact in which the monk (the Fudo Myoo shard) and the Maria Kannon shard ignore each other. The community keeps living in hiding, but public activity is forbidden. |

#Seed 5 — The Kamuy's Descent South
#Scent
Kimun Kamuy (the Kamuy of the mountains · the bear) of Hokkaido, enraged at the Wajin's (mainlanders') southward settlement, has come down to the northern tip of Honshu. These are not small bears — it takes the form of a giant white bear. Samurai and farmers of the region alike are in a panic.
This is no mere appearance of a beast. The Kamuy itself has manifested. The gods of Japan are belatedly realizing that a foreign god has entered their land. The region's Sanno Okami is being pushed back, and the local Ujigami has gone into hiding.
"That bear is not a bear. The size of that bear tells you it is no bear." — A warning from an Ainu trader
#Rules
#Featured Gods
- Kimun Kamuy — originally a Great God 4, temporarily a Middle God 3 due to the descent into mainland Japan
- Domain: "Mountain · Bear · Oath of the Hunt"
- Divine Authority: bear summoning, mountain dominion, demanding renewal of the hunting oath.
- The local Japanese gods — shards of Sanno Okami, the local Ujigami, and others are pushed back by the Kamuy.
#Key Checks
- Can the PCs uncover Kimun Kamuy's true nature first (intelligence from Hokkaido natives and Ainu traders)?
- Drive it away by combat, make it withdraw through dialogue, or hold an Iyomante (bear-sending rite)?
- If Iyomante is chosen: finding someone qualified to perform the Ainu traditional rite is a subtask.
#Branches
| Branch | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Combat | Nearly impossible. The cooperation of the gods of mainland Japan is required. They barely drive it away, but several PCs suffer Wounds depletion (grievous injury). |
| Dialogue | Succeeds only if a daimyo accepts the Kamuy's demand (an oath to halt the Wajin's southward push). A political task. |
| Iyomante | Recruit an Ainu trader or a miko of Ainu lineage → hold the bear-sending rite in Honshu → Kimun Kamuy is satisfied and returns to Hokkaido. A peaceful ending. But this region's Sanno Okami earns the disgrace of "having yielded to a foreign god." |

#Rules — Advice on Using the Scenario Seeds
#To the GM
- Each seed can be expanded to 1–3 sessions. A single act is also fine.
- Opening the data cards of the gods featured in a seed right before the session is enough.
- Do not forget the principle that outside its domain, a god is not a god — this is what creates the scenario's tension.
#Hints for PC Motivation
- Seed 1 (The Hidden Ujigami) · Seed 2 (Hachiman on the Battlefield) — a samurai campaign.
- Seed 3 (The Tatari-Turned Inari) — onmyoji / miko-centered.
- Seed 4 (The Kirishitan's Holy Mother) — a political / Kyushu campaign.
- Seed 5 (The Kamuy's Descent South) — a northern / frontier campaign.
