Contents
  • Lifespan: 1489~1571 (age 82)
  • Era: Early Sengoku
  • School: Kashima Shinto-ryu (鹿島新當流)newly added in fc03
  • Aliases: Sword Saint (劍聖) · his childhood name (幼名) is said to be Yoshikawa Tomotaka (吉川朝孝), and his adult name Takamoto (高幹)

Historical basis: This volume treats Bokuden as the founder of the Kashima Shinto-ryu (鹿島新當流). The "Katori Shinto-ryu" notation in co-09-adventures/co-09-10-mahoujin-reincarnation.md is treated as a game variation for the demon-transformation scenario.

#Fiction Intro — "The Duel on the Boat"

Tsukahara Bokuden, sword saint of no-victory, complete upper body from head to waist, hand relaxed away from the sword, boat rail suggested by one horizontal line, victory through.

The 1560s. A small ferry on Lake Biwa (琵琶湖).

A young swordsman, his blade half-drawn, glares at an old man. The old man sits with his eyes closed. He is already past 70.

"Let us settle it in a single stroke, Bokuden."

The old man speaks silently to the boatman.

"Take me to that small island."

The boat reaches a small uninhabited island. The young swordsman leaps off first. He draws his sword and takes his stance.

"Come, now!"

The old man is still inside the boat. He says to the boatman.

"Now then, row."

The boatman works the oar and pushes the boat back toward the inner lake. The young swordsman is dumbfounded.

"Wh-what is this!"

As he drifts away, the old man leaves a single line.

"This is the essence of my school. The way of winning without fighting."

This is the legendary "Mutekatsu-ryu (無手勝流)" — the tale of winning without using the sword.

#Scent — A Life in History

#Life

Tsukahara Bokuden — born into the Yoshikawa family, he later became an adopted son of the Tsukahara house. He is said to have been born in 1489, near the Kashima Shrine. He is reported to have learned the Kashima Kochu-ryu from his birth father Yoshikawa Kakuken and his grandfather, the Katori Shinto-ryu from his adoptive father, and the sword from Matsumoto Bizen-no-kami as well.

His life is summed up in three musha shugyo (武者修行) — journeys of seeking out the dojos and swordmasters of the Sengoku, repeating duels and exchanges. By tradition he reached 19 real-blade duels and 37 sorties, and is said to have never been defeated.

In his late years he founded the Kashima Shinto-ryu (鹿島新當流). He made the Kashima Shrine his home base.

A figure often mentioned in the disciple tradition: Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru (足利義輝). There is a tradition that Bokuden taught him strategy, or transmitted to him the Single Sword. Yoshiteru was killed in the Eiroku Incident of 1565, and Bokuden died later, in 1571.

#The Real Story

"Ichi-no-Tachi (一之太刀)" — his secret transmission (秘傳). A technique that "puts everything into a single stroke." In his lifetime he transmitted it to only three disciples.

"Mutekatsu-ryu (無手勝流)" — the anecdote from the fiction above. In reality Bokuden left behind several duels won without the sword. The essence of his swordsmanship is "not winning is winning" — the wisdom of avoiding unnecessary fights.

Relationship with Shogun Yoshiteru: The tradition that Bokuden taught Yoshiteru strategy is widely spread. Yet whether he was the foremost disciple, and whether his final melee was directly the result of Bokuden's instruction, is hard to assert from the sources. The story that Yoshiteru, in the Eiroku Incident, gripped several swords in turn and stood his ground to the end remained as a representative tale that, in later ages, cemented his image as a warrior-shogun.

#Tales

"The Boat on Lake Biwa" — the same anecdote as the fiction above. The name of the opposing swordsman differs by tradition, but he is generally depicted as "a young swordsman who chases only fighting." As a didactic tale it became greatly popular in the Edo period.

"How Bokuden Judged Disciples" — an anecdote of testing three disciples. He placed a wooden pillow (木枕) at the doorway and watched the disciples' reactions as they entered.

Bokuden transmitted the Ichi-no-Tachi to the third disciple alone.

  • First disciple: kicked it aside with his foot.
  • Second disciple: stepped over it on the way in.
  • Third disciple: stopped before the door, set the wooden pillow politely to one side, and then entered.

"Mahoujin Reincarnation crossover": In co-09-adventures/co-09-10-mahoujin-reincarnation.md, he returns as a Kaibutsu (怪仏) × Tatarigami. This volume holds the historical original version.

#The Difference Between the School Secret Art Shinmyoken and the Unique Technique Ichi-no-Tachi

  • Shinmyoken — a school secret art of the Kashima Shinto-ryu. Automatic Critical Hit + [Pierce All]. Usable by a disciple who has learned the school and risen to Master of swordsmanship.
  • Ichi-no-Tachi — Bokuden's personal secret transmission. Transmitted to only three disciples. A unique feat.

#Fighting the Swordmaster

#Matchup

  • Head-on duel: Extremely difficult. His base Defense depends on armor, but because of Ichi-no-Tachi and the Mutekatsu-ryu philosophy, the moment you are struck first the contest tips.
  • Core problem: He usually does not fight. No matter how much a PC challenges him, if he does not judge it "worth fighting," he quietly leaves the spot.

#Three Paths to Victory

#Path 1 — Head-on Duel (recommendation ★)

  • You must corner him in a place he cannot avoid (e.g., inside the main sanctuary of the shrine, his disciple held hostage).
  • A long battle, pressing with squad attacks to make him spend the 5-Energy Ichi-no-Tachi first.
  • After Ichi-no-Tachi is triggered 1 time, there is a slight opening. Aim for that opening.

#Path 2 — Earning Recognition (recommendation ★★★)

  • To one who resonates with his Mutekatsu-ryu philosophy, he chooses dialogue instead of battle.
  • If a PC refuses the fight first — he may say, "You have won."
  • Paradoxically, the easiest way to beat him is not to fight.

#Path 3 — Bypass (recommendation ★★)

  • The political situation of his disciple Ashikaga Yoshiteru (Shogun). It can move him.
  • Threaten the Kashima Shrine and he comes out.

#Taking the Swordmaster as Your Master

#Approach

You visit the Kashima Shrine. Normally 3 refusals is the baseline. Bokuden "chooses his disciples" — a PC must pass an unexpected test such as his wooden-pillow trial.

#Conditions

  • Way of Truth (眞) Three Ways and Six Hearts is required.
  • A disposition that avoids unnecessary fights — a belligerent PC is refused.
  • Patience · Restraint · Reverence — these three are the points of observation.

#Course of Study

  • Years 1~2: Cleaning the shrine, repeating only a single basic form with a wooden sword.
  • Years 3~5: Transmission of all the forms of the Kashima Shinto-ryu.
  • A select few: Transmission of the Ichi-no-Tachi secret (up to 3 in a lifetime).
  • Full licensure: An average of 7~10 years.

#Rewards

  • Transmission of the Kashima Shinto-ryu: At full licensure, Kashima Immovability. Thereafter, if you rise to Master of swordsmanship, Shinmyoken.
  • Very rarely, transmission of Ichi-no-Tachi — limited to 3 times in Bokuden's life. Historically the three disciples are already filled by Ashikaga Yoshiteru and 2 others, but by the GM's scenario discretion a PC may become the fourth (an exceptional break).
  • The name "disciple of Bokuden" is the highest pedigree in the world of swordsmanship.

#GM Notes

Bokuden is the representative of the "swordmaster who does not fight." More than combat scenes, Negotiation · Persuasion · Avoidance are his true domain. Even though he has been given a Lord-grade sheet, it should rarely lead to an actual duel.

Scenario hooks:

  • A PC, as a young swordsman, challenges him to a duel → a re-enactment of the Lake Biwa boat anecdote.
  • His disciple faces the threat of murder → a PC seeks out Bokuden and asks for help.
  • An encounter with the historical original just before the Tatarigami transformation of co-09-10 Mahoujin Reincarnation.

"To win is not to end a fight. It is to keep a fight from beginning." — Tsukahara Bokuden
