#Commentary — Why Shrine Priests and Miko Are Not a Class

Konsei Reiyotan's classes are sorted by role, not by concept (co-04-07-00). It is not "samurai or onmyoji" but "what do you do on the battlefield" that comes first. Yet a shrine priest or miko is not a battlefield role but a social standing. It is the identity of "where you belong" — belonging to a shrine, taking root in a village, presiding over rites.

So when a shrine priest or miko takes the field, what they actually do divides into roles that already exist.

  • Raising barriers and warding off defilement → control/protection (the domain of onmyoji and feng shui masters)
  • Lifting morale with kagura and pacifying spirits → support/requiem (the domain of entertainers and Pure Land Monks)
  • Reading what lies ahead through an oracle → foresight (the Prophecy skill)
  • Having a god descend directly → divinity (the domain of the arahitogami)

Instead of making one more class slot, Konsei Reiyotan leaves this dispersal to the freedom of the build. Even the same "miko" can grow into a dancer (entertainer) for one player, a medium (onmyoji) for another, and a vessel (arahitogami) for a third. Below are those paths.

Oracle Miko (medium)arahitogamiGrace/WitsSorcery · ProphecyA vessel a god descends into directly — tip too far, and the villain itako

Reskin principle. Call the Pure Land Monk's "Amida's Shield" "Kami's Blessing" and the esoteric mantra a norito, and the numbers stay the same while only the mood shifts to Shinto. Use the canonical skills and checks, but redress the depiction in the shrine's own idiom — that is the lightest path.

#Example — A Real Build: The Barrier Priest "Kannushi"

A 1-dan character, base onmyoji (Wits), with 9 skill points (co-04-09-00: 3 Novice (3 points) + 1 Trained (2 points) + 2 background points + 2 free points = 9 points) allotted to a shrine-guardian concept.

  • Class automatic skills (onmyoji): Sorcery Trained + Exorcism, Barrier, Prophecy Novice → with the depiction as "reciting norito and handling shikigami (式神)" (shikigami servitude is held separately as a 1-dan feat).
  • 2 free points: Barrier Enhancement (2 points) — raising the Barrier Novice already held automatically up to Licensed opens the Sealing Barrier (preemptive sealing of a zone).
  • 2 background points: Medicine Novice + Culture Novice → "a shrine cleric who cuts off defilement and tends to people" (Exorcism and Prophecy are already held automatically by class).
  • Three Ways and Six Hearts: the Truth of the Way of Mystery — "the order of the kami, coexistence with yoma." (co-02-02)

Result: a shrine priest who, from the Rear Zone, locks down a zone with a barrier, scouts with shikigami, and purifies defilement. With not a single line of new rules, the "shrine guardian" is complete. As you advance in dan and raise Barrier to Licensed→Master (Guardian role: allied Defense +2 within the barrier), you become more and more a shrine priest who "wards off in advance."

If this build feels like enough, this issue may end here. "Even so, I want that one slot called 'Shrine Keeper'" — then go to 03.
