#The Five Treasures — Kaguya's Impossible Tasks [Variant]
Contents
This document belongs to the front. Every treasure is a Variant of
co-99-01— used only when the table adopts it. Grades, tags, and check formulas follow the canonco-07-02 Masterworksandco-07-03 Divine Treasures. GM approval is recommended for Divine-Treasure-grade treasures (Master grade + Faith / Three Ways and Six Hearts match condition).
How to read: a masterwork technique may be used only by a Master (4 points) or higher in the relevant skill. A Divine Treasure records only the blessing/curse + 1 representative [masterwork] + 1 [devotion] in the co-07-03 structure as an excerpt; base techniques such as Attack A/Attack B/Defense/Licensed simply use the ordinary techniques of the weapon/accessory category the treasure grants (abridged opt-in data). Each treasure has both a genuine and a counterfeit version — just as none of the five noble suitors reached the genuine article, in a campaign too the counterfeit appears first.
#Data — The Principle of Genuine and Counterfeit
The five treasures of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter are "the genuine article you cannot obtain." So this catalog places each treasure on two layers.
| Layer | Nature | Game Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine (真) | Obtained only by surpassing the guardian (03). Masterwork-to-Divine-Treasure grade. | Apply the specs below. GM approval recommended (Divine-Treasure grade). |
| Counterfeit (贋) | Can be bought or made. Looks identical on the outside. | No techniques or blessings whatsoever. An ordinary ornament. Exposed by an authenticity-sight check (2d10 + Wits + Perception proficiency >= 15). |
The counterfeit's trap. A counterfeit is expensive (it must look like the real thing). If you pass off a counterfeit as genuine and present it to Kaguya (or the patron) — as in the original, the counterfeit drags its own provenance along. The craftsman comes to collect his pay, the merchant demands a refund, and one who knows the genuine sneers. The best scenario is when a PC who failed the sight check clutches the counterfeit, full of confidence.
#Data — The Five Treasures
#1. Buddha's Stone Begging Bowl (仏の御石の鉢) — Sacred Vessel of Tenjiku
A black stone bowl that Shakyamuni used in Tenjiku (天竺, India). It was said to hold light, glowing faintly even in the dark. Prince Ishitsukuri could not go to Tenjiku, so he brought a soot-stained bowl from another temple — and was exposed because it did not glow.
- Classification: Divine Treasure (tool — bowl, one hand) — though of Tenjiku (India) origin, Buddhism is a faith registered in the
co-07-03Japanese faith table (Buddhism → Way of Emptiness 慈/虛), so it is classified as a native Japanese Buddhist Divine Treasure. Therefore, unlike the Jeweled Branch of Horai (Taoism / Way of the Immortals), the [Understanding] gate does not apply. - Origin faith: Buddhism (devotion condition: Way of Emptiness 慈/虛)
- Guardian: Spiritual Being of Tenjiku — Shadow of the Venerable Binzuru
- Counterfeit detection: The genuine glows in the dark. The counterfeit does not glow (sight check automatic).
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Blessing [aptitude] | Vessel of Compassion — Medicine/Exorcism checks +2 in the holder's zone (Exorcism includes purification). Water held in the bowl becomes purified water (Disable Curse/poison 1 stage, 1 per lull). |
| Curse [aptitude] | Precept of Non-Possession — the holder cannot take monetary reward directly (must share or give it away). |
| Technique | Type | Energy | Check | Effect | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [masterwork] Pure Light (淨光) | Kata | 3 | automatic | Disable Curse/defilement 1 stage on all allies in the same zone + negate the next 1 instance of mental damage. | 1 per combat |
| [devotion] Land of Tranquil Light (寂光土) | Kata | 5 | automatic | Turn the same zone into a Pure Land: for 3 rounds, allies recover 1 Wounds each lull, yoma cannot recover. | 1 per session |
#2. Jeweled Branch of Horai (蓬莱の玉の枝) — Branch of the Immortal Land
A branch of a tree said to grow on Mount Horai (蓬莱山), the immortals' isle beyond the eastern sea. The root is silver, the trunk gold, the fruit white jade. Prince Kuramochi had craftsmen make a counterfeit, but the craftsmen, unpaid, exposed it.
- Classification: Exotic Sacred Object (accessory — branch, held in hand) — Horai / the Way of the Immortals (仙道) is a non-Japanese-sphere (Taoist) faith, so it is classified under the canon
co-07-04Exotic Sacred Objects. - Origin faith: Taoism / Way of the Immortals (仙道) (devotion condition: Way of Mystery 眞)
[Understanding] gate. Because Horai / the Way of the Immortals is non-Japanese-sphere (Taoist), the devotion techniques open only when you satisfy the [[Understanding] path of
co-07-04](../co/co-07-weapons/co-07-04-exotic-artifacts.md#이해-理解-메커닉) — a Master of cultural understanding such as Bearing/Stratagem, or 1 feat slot of [Exotic Adaptation: Chinese myth such as Fengshen Yanyi, Saiyuki]. The gaijin does not get automatic understanding (automatic understanding is limited to the European/Nanban lineage — it does not apply to Horai / the Way of the Immortals). The gaijin, like any other culture, receives only half understanding, adapting to 2 cultures at once with 1 feat slot of [Exotic Adaptation] (co-07-04 gaijin bonus). Claims of broad understanding by celestials, modern persons, and the like are void, and if unmet the devotion techniques cannot be used.
- Guardian: Guardian of Horai — Crane of the Immortal Land
- Counterfeit detection: The genuine branch does not wither and gives off a scent. The counterfeit has metal seams (sight check +0; immediate if a Master of fine craft looks at it).
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Blessing [aptitude] | Leaf of Agelessness — the holder gets Wounds recovery +1 on rest. Immune to aging/disease states. |
| Curse [aptitude] | Longing for the Immortal Land — the holder yearns for Horai; staying in the same camp for 1 season or more gives -1 to social checks other than Grace (美) checks (sunk in longing). |
| Technique | Type | Energy | Check | Effect | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [masterwork] Jade-Leaf Scatter (玉葉散) | Kata | 3 | 2d10+Grace+Bearing >= enemy 2d10+Might | 1 Wounds on all enemies in the same zone + Energy -1 on the next round (intoxicated by the scent of the immortal land). | 1 per round |
| [devotion] Horai Summoning (蓬莱招來) | Kata | 5 | automatic | Mist of the immortal land on the battlefield: for 3 rounds, all allies get stealth +2, enemies get ranged -2. | 1 per session |
#3. Fire-Rat Robe (火鼠の裘) — A Hide Robe That Does Not Burn
A robe woven from the hide of the fire-rat (火鼠, kaso), said to dwell beyond Tenjiku or Morokoshi (唐土, China). Thrown into fire, it does not burn but instead is cleansed. Abe no Miushi paid a fortune to buy it — but when Kaguya put it into the fire, it burned up. It was a counterfeit.
- Classification: masterwork (armor — outer robe, worn over armor)
- Guardian: Fire-Rat (火鼠) — the fire-rat
- Counterfeit detection: The genuine does not burn when put into fire. The counterfeit burns (verification equals destruction — a cruel trap that cannot be tested at purchase).
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Grade | masterwork outer robe (worn over armor) |
| Defense modifier | +0 (does not add to Defense — being a hide robe, it is not armor) |
| Blessing [aptitude] | Fireproof — the wearer takes flame damage halved (round up). Exempt from movement/Infiltration penalties in flame zones. |
| Curse [aptitude] | Absence (a pure blessing). |
| Technique | Type | Energy | Check | Effect | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [masterwork] Walk Through Fire (火中行) | Kata | 2 | automatic | For the next 1 round, the wearer completely negates flame/heat damage + can move through flames. | 1 per round |
#4. Five-Colored Jewel from the Dragon's Neck (龍の頸の五色の玉) — A Jewel Set in the Dragon's Neck
A jewel said to be set in the neck of the Dragon (龍) who governs sea and sky, shining with five colors. Otomo no Miyuki had his retainers try to capture the dragon, but he met a storm at sea, nearly died, and gave up. The most dangerous genuine article among the five treasures.
- Classification: Divine Treasure (accessory — jewel, bosom/neck)
- Origin faith: Dragon-God (龍神) faith (devotion condition: Way of Mystery 眞)
- Guardian: Dragon (龍) — Master of the Five-Colored Jewel (strongest of the five guardians)
- Counterfeit detection: The genuine holds all five colors at once. The counterfeit holds one color (usually colored glass, sight check +0).
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Blessing [aptitude] | Dragon's Protection — exempt from check penalties in underwater/waterside/storm zones, Defense +1. Negate drowning/water-pressure damage. |
| Curse [aptitude] | Dragon's Wrath — if the holder attacks a dragon-god-lineage yoma, the jewel's blessing/techniques cannot be used for that combat (the dragon seeks to reclaim the jewel from its own neck). |
| Technique | Type | Energy | Check | Effect | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [masterwork] Five-Colored Thunder (五色雷) | Kata | 4 | 2d10+Wits+Sorcery+2 >= Defense | 1 Wounds on all enemies in the target zone + paralysis (cannot act on the next breath). 2 Wounds in underwater/storm zones. | 1 per combat |
| [devotion] Dragon-God Manifestation (龍神顯) | Kata | 6 | automatic | Storm summoning: on activation, 1 Wounds on all enemies across the whole battlefield (ranged/flying enemies take an extra 1 Wounds) — single burst damage on 1 activation (co-07-03 area-devotion convention). Afterward, "storm" terrain persists for 3 rounds (enemies forced to relocate, ranged/flying -2) — but no additional Wounds damage. | 1 per session |
Balance note (GM). The Five-Colored Jewel is the strongest of the five — because its guardian (the dragon) is the strongest too (
03). The devotion techniqueDragon-God Manifestationis powerful as a storm area effect, so always keep the conditions of 1 per session, Master + Way of Mystery (眞). In a conflict, the Divine Treasure cap ofcotakes priority. The check-formula modifier +2 of
Five-Colored Thunderis a Divine-Treasure-grade fixed modifier added to attribute/proficiency (following the licensed-technique fixed-modifier convention ofco-08-02). +2 is the cap of the Shuten-doji "Swallow the Mountain" tier, and +3 is reserved for Enmadoji-grade apocalyptic Licensed so it is not added to a masterwork slot. Given that its area-paralysis intensity is on par with Divine-Treasure grade, this technique is used only at a table that has adopted the Divine Treasure (Five-Colored Jewel), and even then under GM approval (Way of Mystery 眞 + Master).
#5. Swallow's Easy-Birth Shell (燕の子安貝) — Shell of Safe Childbirth
The koyasugai (子安貝, koyasugai — cowrie shell) that a swallow is said to hold when laying eggs. A talisman that aids safe childbirth. Isonokami no Marotari climbed into a basket to rummage through a swallow's nest and fell to his death — what he held in his hand was not a shell but the swallow's old dung. The smallest, and most futile death, of the five.
- Classification: masterwork (accessory — talisman, in the bosom)
- Guardian: Things of Sea and Sky — Warden of Swallow and Shell
- Counterfeit detection: The genuine is warm when held in the hand. The counterfeit (or swallow dung) is cold (sight check +2; almost immediate on touch).
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Blessing [aptitude] | Blessing of Safe Birth — allies in the holder's same zone have bleeding/poison progression automatically eased by 1 stage each lull. Medicine checks +2 when protecting the weak/wounded. |
| Curse [aptitude] | Absence (a small, gentle talisman). There is no restriction on simultaneous activation with other masterworks/Divine Treasures, but it occupies 1 accessory slot (co-07-02 equipment slots). |
| Technique | Type | Energy | Check | Effect | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [masterwork] Safe Childbirth (安産) | Kata | 2 | automatic | Stabilize 1 ally on the brink of being downed (Wounds 1): for this combat, that ally acts 1 more round even at Wounds 0 (the final beat). | 1 per combat |
