#People of the Land — Wildlander Supplement

People of the Land — Wildlander Supplement cover

Scope declaration / opt-in. This issue is a supplement to the canon wildlander class. The class's attributes, skills, checks, proficiency, Energy, and Wounds all follow the canon, and this issue only adds cultural introduction and a few options on top of it, without replacing the canon. The newly added alternate paths, dedicated techniques, and items are all Variants under co-99-01, valid only when a table adopts them. Before adoption they have no effect on the base rules, and when a number conflicts with the canon, the canon ([co]) always takes precedence.

Respect notice — read this without fail. The peoples this issue treats, including the Ainu and Ryukyu, are living, real cultures and people today. They are not the game's monsters, nor yoma, nor foreign curiosities. This issue does not turn them into specters, monsters, or exotic exhibits. It introduces their faith, life, and worldview seriously and on a factual basis, while guarding against both exaggeration and romanticization. As far as possible it calls names and concepts by the words of that culture, and clearly distinguishes this setting's fiction (the passages entangled with the Spirit Realm and yoma). A table that cannot keep this tone would do better not to open this issue.

#Brief — What This Issue Is

The canon wildlander says it in one line — "A wild warrior carrying on the blood of the Emishi and Ainu." Behind that one line are the people who lived on this archipelago long before the age of chaos that the Yamato (大和) court called "Sengoku" ever came. This issue looks at those people, and at the wildlander class that carries on their bloodline — across one issue.

The wildlander is a lonely class. The nature of that loneliness is becoming the last person of a vanishing world. Yet the canon could speak only briefly of what that "world" was. This issue fills that empty space. Who is the wildlander's kamuy (god), what songs does the wildlander sing, and whose bloodline is it that the wildlander carries on?

There are three strands.

  • People of the Land — the Ainu, Ryukyu, Emishi, and Kumaso. It introduces their worldview, faith, and life with respect. (01)
  • The Wildlander's Other Roads — a few alternate paths and dedicated techniques added to the canon wildlander. (02)
  • Things Held in Hand — the wildlander's items, such as the makiri, patterns, and everyday tools. Centered on cultural context. (03)

#Note — A One-Line Thesis

"Before the wildlander is a single word in a class square, it is one person's bloodline. That bloodline has a name, has a god, has a song — only once you know this do you finally know the weight of that fist."

#Production Notice

This issue is Issue No. 6 of the Konsei Reiyotan zn (one-shot) series. The descriptions of the faith, life, and worldview of the peoples including the Ainu and Ryukyu are based on facts about real cultures, but were organized with respect as the top priority within the limits of depth that a single dark-fantasy resource can reach. The passages entangled with the Spirit Realm (霊界) and yoma, and the game numbers, are this setting's fiction, and that boundary is clearly marked in the text. The character rules use the canon wildlander as is. Descriptions concerning real cultures should be supplemented and corrected by that culture's primary sources and the voices of those concerned.

#AI Use Notice

A considerable part of this material was produced with the help of generative AI (LLM) in the processes of planning, drafting, sentence cleanup, and proofreading. The GPT Image 2 model was used in the image-generation process. Claude Code and Codex were used for the Japanese and English translations. Final editing and the responsibility for publication rest with the producer.

In the event of changes to domestic or foreign law regarding AI-assisted works, that law shall be followed.

#Scent — One Sentence

"People lived before Sengoku began, and people live after Sengoku ended — the wildlander is one person standing between the two, trying not to be forgotten."
