#Kirishitan — Prayers and Hymns

Contents

Kirishitan — Prayers and Hymns cover

Scope declaration / opt-in. This issue carries the gaijin's alternate path and prayer/hymn data, along with the history and atmosphere of the Kirishitan. The new paths and data are all Variant content under co-99-01 — valid only when the table adopts them, with no effect on the baseline before adoption. When numbers conflict, co always takes priority. New paths, prayers, and hymns are strong in concept, so GM approval is recommended. Attributes, skills, checks, proficiency, Energy, Wounds, and tags all follow the canon as written; this issue does not replace the gaijin class but adds a way to hold it in another hand.

#Brief — What This Issue Is

The gaijin is by origin a teppo sniper — one who ignores armor with Foreign Gunpowder and nullifies the decisions of the realm from 200 paces away. But gunpowder was not the only thing the Nanban ships carried to Japan. On the same deck, at the same port, a single book and a single line of prayer came ashore as well.

This issue asks — how does a gaijin who does not pull the trigger fight? The answer is not gunpowder but Faith. A hand holding a cross, a prayer recited in Latin, a hymn ringing in a small chapel by the harbor. This gaijin does not shoot enemies dead. Instead they lay benediction upon allies, weaken yoma with a hymn, and recite the last prayer at the bedside of the dying.

There are three strands (the front is set apart as a guide).

  • What is the Kirishitan — from Xavier's arrival in 1549 through persecution and the Kakure Kirishitan, and how an alien faith touches this world's yoma and Spirit Realm. (01)
  • How to reshape the gaijin — an alternate build that forms the gaijin via the "Prayers and Hymns" path instead of teppo techniques. (02)
  • What prayers and hymns do — blessing, Exorcism, last rites, purification. Individual effect data. (03)

Avoiding overlap. The canon ex2-01-03 covers the alternate techniques of the 3 Outside classes (modern person, heroic spirit, celestial) and the Commoner — it does not cover the gaijin. This issue's gaijin "Prayers and Hymns" path is a new path that does not overlap that document.

#Note — One-Line Thesis

"The gaijin is an interpreter between two worlds. Take gunpowder in one hand and you become one who ends an age; take prayer in the other hand and — you become one who interprets a god this land never had."

#Production Notice

This issue is Issue 8 of the Konsei Reiyotan zn (one-shot) series. The history of the Kirishitan and the Jesuit Order — Xavier's arrival in 1549, its merger with Nanban trade, the conversion of Kirishitan daimyo, persecution and the Kakure Kirishitan — is based on actual facts of 16th-century Japan. Real religion is treated with respect within the frame of the historical Kirishitan, and faith itself is not demoted into a game ability. The passages where an alien faith touches yoma and the Spirit Realm, and the game effects of prayers and hymns, are fiction of this setting and opt-in Variant content. All numbers were designed atop the check formulas and tags of the canon gaijin · esoteric monk · 36 skills.

#Scent — One Sentence

"Gunpowder kills a person from 200 paces away — but prayer reaches, at a hand's breadth, the one already dying."
