#Prayers and Hymns — Effect Data [Variant]
This document belongs to the front. Every effect is a Variant under
co-99-01— used only when the table adopts it. The grain of the mechanics is in the same lineage as the canon esoteric mantras and onmyoji Sorcery — the Energy/limit/tag systems are identical. Because the concept is strong, GM approval is recommended.
How to read: type tags ([Aptitude]/[Kata]/[Stance]/[Upkeep]), Energy, limits, and tags ([Incorporeal], Defense -N, Wounds) all follow canon. Effects that require a check are rolled with the canon 36 skills. Bearing, Exorcism, Prophecy, Negotiation, and Medicine are all canon skills (Bearing is its own dedicated 6 skills), and this issue creates no new skill. Difficulty target numbers use the canon ladder 5/7/9/11/13/15/17/19.
#Data — Per-Dan Effect Catalog
This corresponds to the per-dan replacement table in 02 Alternate Path. Within the same dan, choose 1 (same as the canon gaijin slot).
#Dan 1: Blessing Prayer (降福祈祷) [Upkeep] — Path Automatic
[Upkeep] Blessing Prayer
Timing: Lull Phase | Limit: 1 per lull | Energy: no cost (lull only)
Effect: Place Deus's benediction on 1 ally in advance. Nullify the next
curse or status ailment that ally suffers, 1 instance. (Lasts until the next lull)
Check: none (automatic). At Bearing Licensed or above, 2 targets.
The basic prayer a Faith gaijin holds from dan 1. It takes the place of the canon gaijin's [
Foreign Gunpowder] slot. "If you know what is coming, you can ward it off."
#Dan 3 (choose 1)
| Technique | Type | Energy | Limit | Check | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exorcism Hymn (退魔聖歌) | [Kata] | 2 | 1 per round | 2d10+Wits+Exorcism >= target number | All yoma in the same/adjacent zone Defense -2 (1 round). Applies to incorporeal yoma too (not immune). "Hearing a prayer for the first time, the yoma do not know how to block it." |
| Solace Hymn (慰撫聖歌) | [Kata] | 2 | 1 per round | 2d10+Grace+Bearing >= target number | All allies in the same zone Fear immune + next damage taken -1 Wounds (minimum 0, 1 round). |
| Conversion Plea (回心勧告) | [Kata] | 3 | 1 per battle | 2d10+Grace+Negotiation vs enemy will | Preach to 1 enemy footsoldier/mook squad. On success, that round they cannot attack (hesitation). No effect on Veteran or above. The Faith staging of Surrender Plea (Negotiation Licensed). |
Exorcism Hymn is in the same lineage as the esoteric monk's
Exorcism Sutra(yoma Defense -2), but differs in that the check skill is Exorcism and it reaches incorporeal yoma too (not immune).
#Dan 5 (choose 1)
| Technique | Type | Energy | Limit | Check | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baptismal Purification (洗礼浄化) | [Kata] | 3 | 1 per round | 2d10+Wits+Exorcism >= target number | Immediately Disable 1 curse, defilement, or status ailment on 1 target in the same zone. Also used to purify NPCs or places eaten away by kegare (穢れ) (non-combat). The Faith version of onmyoji purification. |
| Choral Benediction (合唱加護) | [Upkeep] | — | 1 per lull | none | In the Lull Phase, all allies in the same zone get +1 to all checks for the next 1 round. A prayer recited together like a choir. |
| Cross Ward (十字守護) | [Stance] | 2 | sustained | none | While sustained, self and 1 adjacent ally take Defense +2 against yoma attacks. Can relocate. "Under the shadow of Deus." |
#Dan 7 Advanced (choose 1)
| Technique | Type | Energy | Limit | Check | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Last Rites (終傅聖事) | [Kata] | 1 | 1 per battle | none | A benediction at the bedside of a dying/near-death (Wounds 1) target. If the target reaches Wounds 0 in that battle, delay being incapacitated by 1 round (during that 1 round, treated as Wounds 1; after a last breath, incapacitated at round's end — see note below). Or, after a target who has accepted death dies, Blockade onryo transformation (怨靈化) — sealing the road by which they become an onryo defiled by kegare. "Do not be afraid." |
| Great Exorcism Hymn (大退魔聖歌) | [Kata] | 4 | 1 per battle | 2d10+Wits+Exorcism >= target number | All yoma in the target zone take 2 Wounds + yoma entry Blockade (2 rounds). Applies to [Incorporeal]. The Faith lineage of the esoteric monk's [Great Exorcism Array]. |
| Sanctuary Consecration (聖域奉獻) | [Upkeep] | — | 1 per battle | 2d10+Wits+Prophecy >= target number | Before battle begins, make one zone a temporary sanctuary. Allies in that zone Defense +2, yoma entry target number +2. A variant opened by Faith without the Barrier skill (same effect as the canon Barrier Master Guardian Ward, different source. Defense modifiers in the same zone do not stack; only the single highest value applies). |
Last Rites is not a damage or healing technique. It neither directly raises nor lowers Energy (action economy) or Wounds (durability) — the "last breath" is not making someone act while incapacitated, but a staging that delays the onset of incapacitation by 1 round. During that 1 round the target is not incapacitated (treated as Wounds 1), and it is handled in the same lineage as the canon esoteric monk's
Nirvana Stillness("revives even at Wounds 0 → incapacitated after 1 round") — an authorized opt-in that delays incapacitation by 1 round after reaching Wounds 0. However, whereas Nirvana Stillness is full Wounds recovery and normal action, Last Rites is treated as Wounds 1 and only a last breath, so it is weaker. That is, it does not overrideco-03-05's "incapacitated = cannot act," and is bound by a limit (1 per battle).
#Dan 9 Advanced (choose 1)
| Technique | Type | Energy | Limit | Check | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resurrection Prayer (復活祈祷) | [Kata] | 5 | 1 per battle | 2d10+Wits+Medicine >= target number | Immediately revive 1 incapacitated ally — half of maximum Wounds (rounded). "It is not yet your time." |
| Martyr's Light (殉敎の光) | [Kata] | 0 | 1 per session | none | Declared when self becomes incapacitated. All yoma in the same zone 3 Wounds + yoma in adjacent zones 1 Wounds ([Incorporeal] applies), all allies Fear immune for 1 round. Self rests as is. "My death is the last prayer." |
| Apostle (使徒) | [Aptitude] | — | 1 per session | — | Bearing/Exorcism/Prophecy checks treated as automatic success (Saint-tier staging) + Faith aura applied to the battlefield. 1 time per 1 session. The moment a hundred years of Kakure Kirishitan orasho settles into one person. |
Resurrection Prayer has a greater recovery range than the Medicine Master Resuscitation (Wounds 1 revival,
co-04-09-01), but it is a Faith variant offset by being the dan 9 peak and bound to 1-per-battle.
Dan 9 effects are all bound by a 1 per session/battle limit. Just as Renown Title is not a numeric bonus, "Apostle"'s automatic success is not a permanent ability either, but a peak staging usable 1 time per 1 session.
#Rule — Operating Rules (brief)
1. What you roll with. All prayer/hymn checks are the canon 36 skills — aggressive effects (Exorcism Hymn, Great Exorcism Hymn, Baptismal Purification, Resurrection Prayer) are on the Wits axis (Exorcism/Prophecy/Medicine), and social/benediction effects (Solace Hymn, Conversion Plea, Choral Benediction) are on the Grace axis (Bearing/Negotiation). This is why 02 recommended Grace and Wits as the core.
2. Handling incorporeal targets ([Incorporeal]). Effects that reach yoma also apply their effect to incorporeal yoma (not immune). Attack-type effects that deal Wounds damage (Great Exorcism Hymn, Martyr's Light) carry the canon [Incorporeal] tag to bypass an incorporeal target's Defense, and debuff-type effects (Exorcism Hymn Defense -2) apply to incorporeal yoma as is. This is where the Faith gaijin parts ways with the native exorcist — an unfamiliar prayer reaches even a bodiless spirit (霊) without knowing its proper form. However, physical-bypass tags like [Pierce N] and [Direct N] (and the equipment-damage aid [Break]) do not attach to prayers/hymns (this is not gunpowder).
3. Limit first. Strong effects like preemptive benediction, automatic success, and revival are all bound by 1 per lull/1 per round/1 per battle/1 per session limits. When granting an effect, check the limit first (same principle as the canon co-04-09 Energy/limit system).
4. Spirit Realm politics hook. As the Scent of 01 goes, the Faith gaijin is a guest to the kami. The GM can let slip scenes where a shrine Barrier turns cold toward them, or where the kami withdraw cooperation in a domain whose idols they have broken. Prayers and hymns are strong against yoma, but balance is struck by giving a penalty when borrowing the help of native spirits.
5. Respect. This is a place that handles a living faith. The effects are pinned only within the frame of the historical Kirishitan (orasho, last rites, baptism), and do not mock or demean the faith itself. The GM removes any part that is uncomfortable at the table.
This is as far as the gaijin's other face goes. What remains in the hand that has set down its gunpowder is — a single line of prayer. → to front
