#Scent — The Buddha Sitting in the Mountains
Deep in the mountains of Kumano. In a place human beings cannot reach, something has been sitting since long ago. It has the form of a monk. Its robes are covered in moss, and its hair has grown long enough to reach the ground. Its eyes are closed, but it is not dead. Its lips do not move, but the sutras never stop. This is the Kaibutsu: one who achieved sokushinjobutsu.
The extreme practice of esoteric Buddhism passes through tree-eating, earth-eating, and lacquer-eating, removing all water and fat from the body, and finally entering meditative absorption while seated. Usually, the practitioner dies. But in extremely rare cases, someone does not die. The body is like a mummy, but the heart still beats, sutras still resound, and barriers are still spread. The divinity of an Arahitogami combines with esoteric practice, giving birth to a being that is "human and yet a buddha." Villagers worship it as a mountain god, and yoma go around it.
The Kaibutsu does not fight. No, it cannot fight. Decades of seated meditation have stiffened its limbs and dried its muscles. It cannot stand, cannot walk, and cannot speak. Yet even without moving, its existence itself is the battlefield. Centered on the place where the Kaibutsu sits, the light of Holy Fire spreads, yoma power weakens, and barriers unfold automatically. Its Wounds are infinite. Only exorcism techniques can reduce the Kaibutsu's Wounds. Therefore, defeating a Kaibutsu is not a "combat," but an "exorcism ritual."
- Recommended Weapons: none (cannot move, cannot attack)
- Recommended Schools: none (does not perform combat actions at all)
- Recommended Faction Traits: deep Kumano mountains (isolated holy ground), abandoned Hiei League temple (buddha remaining in a deserted temple)
#Law — Trait List
#1st Dan: Sokushinjobutsu (卽身成佛) [aptitude]
[aptitude] Sokushinjobutsu (卽身成佛)
Effect: A living buddha. Constant effects:
- Infinite Wounds. Ordinary attacks/techniques cannot reduce Wounds.
- Only exorcism techniques reduce Wounds (1 exorcism hit = Wounds -1).
- Base Wounds 20. If reduced to 0 by exorcism, it enters deathly peace (入寂): the soul attains Buddhahood and disappears.
- **Cannot move**: Kaibutsu cannot move on its own. Ordinary forced movement is also invalid.
- **Cannot speak**: Kaibutsu cannot speak. Language-based actions such as negotiation, intimidation, and incitement are impossible.
- **Cannot enter the Core Zone**: Kaibutsu cannot enter the Core Zone.
- If removed from its seat by an exorcism ritual or scenario condition, Wounds immediately decrease to 5 and the Sokushinjobutsu state is released. After that, it fights with combined ordinary Esoteric Monk+Arahitogami stats.
#3rd-Dan Class Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holy Fire Domain (聖火領域) | [aptitude] | — | — | The zone where the Kaibutsu is located has a constant Holy Fire effect. Yoma in that zone have Defense -2. Each lull, yoma remaining in that zone lose 1 Wound. |
| Automatic Barrier (自動結界) | [aptitude] | — | — | Automatically creates a constant barrier in the zone where the Kaibutsu is located. Targets inside the barrier, when hit by [Incorporeal] attacks, are treated as if their Exorcism skill were 1 stage higher. Destroying the barrier requires Exorcism>=17. |
| Austerity 3rd Stage (苦行三段) | [aptitude] | — | — | Permanent austerity state. Damage from all physical attacks against the Kaibutsu -2 (minimum 0). Complete immunity to elemental attacks such as fire/cold/electricity. "Blades mean nothing to a mummy's body." |
#5th-Dan Class Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silent Sutra (無言の經文) | [stance] | 0 | Maintain | During the lull, 1 ally in the Kaibutsu's zone recovers 1 Wound. While maintaining the stance, spend 2 Energy for 1 ally in the same zone to recover 1 Wound. The effect disappears if the ally leaves the zone. "Even if the mouth does not move, the sutra resounds." |
| Spiritual Reflection (靈的反射) | [aptitude] | — | — | When a spell/curse technique hits the Kaibutsu, it is automatically reflected: the caster is hit by the same effect. The Kaibutsu's spiritual barrier returns the attack. |
| Protection of Kumano (熊野の守護) | [Kata] | 3 | 1/round | All allies in the Kaibutsu's zone gain Defense +3 (lasts 1 round). "The buddha of the mountain protects you." |
#7th-Dan Advanced Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mandala Manifestation (曼荼羅顯現) | [Kata] | 5 | 1/combat | A mandala (曼荼羅) appears across the whole battlefield. For 3 rounds: all yoma on the battlefield Wounds -3, and all allied Exorcism checks +3. "The buddha's world overlaps the battlefield." |
| Flame of Fudo Myoo (不動明王の火焰) | [Kata] | 4 | 1/round | Spiritual flame erupts within 1 zone around the Kaibutsu. Against all yoma in the zone: 2d10+Wisdom >= Defense, 3 Wounds. Harmless to humans. "Fudo Myoo's wrath burns only evil things." |
| Deepened Absorption (入定の深化) | [aptitude] | — | — | Wound reduction from exorcism decreases from -1 to -0.5 (round normally)**. 2 exorcism hits = Wounds -1. "The buddha's discipline deepens." |
#9th-Dan Advanced Traits (choose 1)
| Trait | Type | Energy | Limit | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nirvanic Stillness (涅槃寂靜) | [Kata] | all | 1/combat | The Kaibutsu declares voluntary entry into deathly peace. Its Wounds become 0 and it attains Buddhahood (disappears). At that moment, all yoma across the battlefield immediately suffer Wounds -10. All allies fully recover Wounds. "The buddha's death purifies the world." Character lost. |
| Sokushinjobutsu Complete (卽身成佛完成) | [aptitude] | — | — | The Kaibutsu's existence reaches complete buddhahood. Holy Fire Domain expands to the entire battlefield. All attacks other than exorcism are completely negated, including physical, spell, curse, and [Incorporeal] attacks. However, exorcism hits now increase to Wounds -2. |
#Extreme Strengths
- Infinite Wounds: it cannot be killed by ordinary attacks. Without an exorcism specialist, defeating it is impossible.
- Holy Fire Domain: purifies the zone where the Kaibutsu sits. Yoma weaken in that zone and cannot endure there for long.
- Automatic Barrier + Austerity: turns the area around the Kaibutsu into a defensive stronghold. The barrier does not erase
[Incorporeal]attacks completely; it raises the stage of Exorcism checks. - Silent Sutra: not party-wide recovery during combat, but lull recovery and single-target recovery while maintaining stance, helping allies endure.
- Exorcism ritual narrative: an assault on a Kaibutsu is not an ordinary lord-grade defeat, but an exorcism ritual, creating a distinctive scenario.
#Extreme Weaknesses
- Cannot move: cannot move under any circumstances. The battlefield must form around the Kaibutsu.
- Cannot speak: negotiation, intimidation, surrender demands, alliance proposals: all impossible. There is no conversation with NPCs.
- Cannot enter the Core Zone: cannot participate in Core Zone combat at all. Powerless against enemies fighting in the Core Zone.
- Wounds plummet on movement: if forced to move, Wounds drop sharply to 5. It completely loses the power of buddhahood.
- Vulnerable to exorcism specialists: if Esoteric Monks and shugenja concentrate exorcism, Wounds are steadily reduced.
- PC operation limits: because it has no movement/conversation, it suits NPC lord-grade enemies or environmental obstacles better than PCs. If used as a PC, noncombat RP is extremely limited.
#Typical Breath Pattern (5th Dan)
The Kaibutsu does not "choose" actions. Constant effects apply automatically.
Count 12 — First breath:
Holy Fire Domain(automatic) + Automatic Barrier(automatic) + maintain Silent Sutra stance = 0
→ yoma in the zone Defense -2. Allies hit by `[Incorporeal]` attacks are treated as 1 Exorcism stage higher
Count 8 — Second breath:
Silent Sutra recovery(2) + Protection of Kumano(3) = 5
→ 1 ally in the same zone recovers 1 Wound + allies in the zone gain Defense +3
Remaining Energy: 11 - 5 = 6 (because the Kaibutsu cannot move, Energy focuses on support inside the barrier)
Enemy response: an exorcism specialist must enter the Kaibutsu's zone.
#Zone Bonuses
| Zone | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Front Zone | Turns the Front Zone where the Kaibutsu sits into a purification stronghold. Enemy exorcists can also approach more easily. |
| Rear Zone | Safe, but Holy Fire Domain remains in its own rear zone. Focuses on rear protection and defense of the exorcism ritual. |
| Core Zone | Cannot enter. The Kaibutsu cannot sit in the Core Zone. |
| Outside Zone | Most common placement. A scenario about seeking the Kaibutsu sitting in the mountains. |
#Three Ways and Six Hearts Conflict
The Kaibutsu's core drama is the boundary between compassion and attachment.
- "Is this compassion, or attachment?" The Kaibutsu chose Buddhahood to protect sentient beings. But if it clings to the world and cannot enter nirvana, is that not a Buddhist failure?
- "Can a buddha involve itself in war?" The Kaibutsu's Holy Fire Domain helps allies and harms yoma. But what of the precept against killing? Is a buddha who takes sides still a buddha?
- Choice of Nirvanic Stillness: if the Kaibutsu voluntarily enters deathly peace, it can purify the battlefield. But that is "death." When a buddha chooses to die, is it liberation or suicide?
- Relationship with allies: the Kaibutsu cannot speak. If allies misunderstand its will and use its power as a tool of war, the Kaibutsu cannot refuse. Drama of "humans using the mountain buddha as a weapon."
- Kumano Mountains vs battlefield: if the Kaibutsu is moved from the mountain to the battlefield (Wounds plummet on movement), it loses the power of buddhahood. Ethical issue of "dragging a buddha onto the battlefield."
"Sitting in the mountains, chanting sutras. A hundred years, a thousand years. Until all beings are saved, the buddha does not move."
