English edition v1.3.3

#Gazu Hyakki Yagyo (畫圖百鬼夜行)

Contents

Ongoing Quest (Long-Term Commission). This is not a single-scenario problem to solve, but a long-term commission accumulated across multiple campaigns. Whenever the party encounters yoma in any scenario, they collect observation data and report it to an entertainer-painter. As the total rises, masterworks, accessories, and a secret manual are awarded in order. The players' "motivation outside the fight" -- an incentive for exploring the setting.

  • Recommended setup: any party of 3rd dan or higher. Valid across all dan ranges. Recommended for long campaigns.
  • Difficulty: none (the commission itself is harmless). The difficulty of yoma combat itself is separate.
  • Rules covered: ongoing quest operation / observation score table / tool, accessory, and sacred-object equipment slots (Principle 3) / masterwork acquisition / turning setting knowledge into assets

#Nature of This Adventure

It is not solved all at once. The commission can be accepted in any domain castle, then progresses across months to years of campaign time. It functions as a side objective while the party undertakes main scenarios (09-01~09-10, etc.).

Economic Tier Label: This quest's gold rewards belong to the Long-Term Quest Tier(co-08-05 §6.2). A single report may pay tens to hundreds of gold, but because the acquisition cycle is spread across a 1~2-year campaign, it is not directly compared to the Combat Tier cap (20 gold) or Scenario Tier scale (3~80 gold). The cumulative total is also designed to converge around 10~20 main-scenario rewards.

#Structure Summary

  1. Accept the commission (first meeting, Act 1).
  2. Observe + report (repeat, after each yoma combat).
  3. Milestone rewards (cumulative 5, 10, 20, 30, 50).
  4. Final reward (on reaching 50 yoma, the secret manual "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo").

This adventure does not replace other scenarios. It runs in parallel.

#Scent (香)

#Sensation of the Opening Scene

Wandering painter at the Kamo riverbank before a half-finished hyakki-yagyo scroll (oni outline only), inkstone, one firefly

The sun is setting on the bank of the Kamo River. Kiyomizu has spread a single sheet of cloth over the gravel and sits seiza upon it. A stone inkwell sits in one corner, with three brushes and two sticks of ink. Before her lies a scroll still half empty -- only the outline of an oni has been drawn, and the horns are not yet fully filled with black. Wind blows in from the river and slowly lifts the edge of the paper. The bitter smell of ink, the fishy smell of river water, and from somewhere far away, the mugwort smoke of a mosquito fire.

One firefly lands on the scroll, then lifts clear of the characters and rises again. Kiyomizu does not look up. Only her breath is faintly audible -- the breathing of someone focused on the brush tip. The surroundings are utterly quiet, but this quiet is not empty. It is the quiet of something nearby watching for the picture to be completed. Whether that something is a yoma, the soul of her dead master, or the party she has not yet met.

#Voices of the Major NPC

Kiyomizu Kusamura (setting down the brush, quietly): "I cannot stand on a battlefield. So -- I want to borrow your eyes. You need not cut anything down. All you have to do is look. Tell me how the yoma moved, what its eyes were like, what it smelled like. I will capture it as a painting."

Kiyomizu (shy, but serious): "Could I perhaps -- have a single fragment of bone from the oni you cut down? Ah, no, that is an impolite request. Please forget it. ... But if you gave it to me, I would grind the bone and mix it into ink. A painting made that way comes alive. I do not know whether you will believe that."

Kiyomizu (just before the 50-yoma milestone, in a low voice): "Only one remains. The final one. I know that when this book is completed, part of my soul will move into it. You ask if I am afraid? Yes, I am. But -- this is the only blade I can wield."

#Mood Turning Point

The turning point of this scenario is not combat, but the moment of reunion. Every time the party meets Kiyomizu again after several months, the scent of her studio changes a little. At first there was only the plain smell of ink and paper. After passing 10 yoma, the ink mixed with yoma bone powder gives off a faint blood-fishy smell. After passing 30 yoma, a thin yoma aura (妖氣) begins to steep the whole studio -- Kiyomizu herself does not notice, but a PC with high Perception can feel it.

On the day 50 yoma are complete, she calls the party into the garden. The air that day is perfectly clear. All the yoma aura that had soaked into the place has condensed into one book and left the room. Kiyomizu herself has grown slightly thinner, and her voice is fainter than before. It is the moment when the silence of the observer -- has become the silence of the creator.

#Background Music and Color

The color tone is thin ink (薄墨) -- cloudy gray made by watering down black ink. Over it, one green point of firefly light. The music is a low koto note, one that is held long and fades away. During observation scenes, it is fine to turn the music off. The moment the painting is completed -- the sound of the brush leaving the paper replaces the entire background score.

Scents of three scenes:

  • Kiyomizu's studio -- the scent of ink, paper, and mugwort. Calm and old. Many bookshelves.
  • Night yoma hunting -- the scent of sulfur, blood, and dew. Just after the fight ends, when a PC crouches to observe, the smell of soil rising from the ground is what remains most clearly.
  • The observer's silence -- no scent (無香). The moment Kiyomizu listens to the PC's report and takes up her brush without a word. Because the air is empty, the moment is sharpest of all.

#Client NPC

#Kiyomizu Kusamura (清水 草叢)

Entertainer 8th dan. Wandering painter. Age 30-something.
Attributes: Presence +3, Wisdom +3, Fate +2, Finesse +1, Physique +0, Courage +0.
Energy: 11. Wounds: 4. Defense: 11 (self-defense dagger + winter clothing).

Background: She is painting the Hyakki Yagyo Album (百鬼夜行帖) at the request of a high official of Kagura Domain. This album is not just an artwork, but an attempt to gather human understanding of yoma into a single book. Testimony, sketches, and combat records from those who have witnessed yoma are collected into one integrated bestiary. Once completed, it will be used as reference material by Kagura Domain's exorcism officials, castle-defense staff, and scholars.

Kiyomizu knows that she cannot stand on the battlefield. Presence +3 is superb for a painter, but Courage +0 is worthless for a warrior. So she chose to borrow the eyes of warriors. The party is her eyes.

Personality:

  • Fanatical about art. Someone who sees the yoma's "beauty." "I am the only one who knows how exquisite that oni's horn angle was."
  • She holds warrior PCs in awe, but sometimes shyly asks for a bone fragment from a dead yoma.
  • Practical: she scores observations fairly and always pays the promised reward.
  • Narrative weakness: she tends to romanticize the nature of yoma too much. She may first call a dangerous yoma "beautiful."

NPC Grade: Observer -- no threat, ally category. However, if the PCs put her in danger, progress on the Hyakki Yagyo Album stops (if she dies, the quest ends permanently; there is no successor painter).

#Act 1 — Accepting the Commission

#First Meeting (Trigger Conditions)

  • When the party is staying at an inn or teahouse in Kagura Domain or a neighboring domain, or
  • When a party with experience defeating at least 1 yoma is in a narratively relevant area (market, front of a domain castle, temple/shrine front), or
  • When the GM places her arbitrarily (Kiyomizu approaches the party).

#Scene

Kiyomizu approaches after overhearing the party's story by chance -- or through someone's introduction.

"Excuse me, but have you ever cut down an oni? Ah, no, I do not mean to be rude. I am a painter. Someone who paints. I am currently preparing a Hyakki Yagyo Album, but because I cannot stand on the battlefield -- I desperately need testimony from people who have directly seen yoma. I will pay you. I certainly will. The project is sponsored by the domain lord, so there is gold. And -- once it is complete, I may be able to give you one more very special book..."

If the party accepts the commission, Kiyomizu gives them a copy of the Hyakki Yagyo Album (副本). This is a handout for the PC players. They write the yoma they have observed so far into this notebook.

If they refuse, Kiyomizu understands and leaves. If the party meets her again in another domain, she can make the offer again.

#Act 2 — Observation and Report (Ongoing)

#Observation Score Table

After the party engages a yoma, the GM calculates an observation score out of 5 based on the contents observed.

CategoryScoreAchievement Condition
Appearance (外觀)+1The PC directly sees the yoma's appearance, size, color, and features (automatic on simple sighting).
Combat Behavior (戰鬪行態)+1Engage for at least 1 round and observe attack, movement, and defense patterns.
Special Ability (特殊能力)+1Identify at least one of the yoma's unique techniques, illusions, poison, intangibility, or yoma aura with a Perception check (2d10+Wisdom+Perception ≥ 11).
Sociality/Negotiation (社會性)+1Successfully perform negotiation, conversation, or intimidation with the yoma (2d10+Presence+Negotiation ≥ the relevant Target Number). Or observe interaction among a group of yoma.
Origin/Derivation (起源)+1Before or after combat, grasp the lore of the yoma through an Exorcism or Sorcery check (2d10 + Wisdom + higher proficiency between Exorcism and Sorcery >= 13). Local legends or documents can also confirm it.

5-point maximum. Even in a short fight, 2~4 points are possible depending on observation.

#New Yoma Bonus

  • First observation (when recording that species of yoma in the Hyakki Yagyo Album for the first time): convert the base score to 150%.
  • From the second time with the same species onward, use only the base score (repeat observation supplements the prior record).
  • A variant of the same species (different region or different state): 75% new value (GM judgment).

#Basic Reward by Grade (Gold)

Observation score × grade coefficient = gold reward.

Yoma GradeGold per 1 Point
Mob (雜)1 gold
Minion (卒)2 gold
Veteran (練)4 gold
Elite (將)10 gold
Lord (主)25 gold

Examples:

  • Ko-oni (Minion-grade), 3-point observation: 6 gold.
  • Oo-oni (Elite-grade), new 5-point complete observation: 10×5×1.5 = 75 gold.
  • Tamamo-no-Mae (Lord-grade), new 5-point complete observation: 25×5×1.5 = 187 gold (rounding → 188).

#Complete Observation (5 Points) Special Bonus

Each yoma's 5-point completion report provides a permanent asset in addition to simple gold:

  • In the party's future engagements, maintain attack +1 against that yoma species (applies to all PCs).
  • That yoma stat block is recorded in the Hyakki Yagyo Album -- afterward, even if another PC meets the same yoma, its weakness can be understood immediately.
  • Kiyomizu shares this content with Kagura Domain's exorcism officials -- if that yoma appears in domain territory, domain squads automatically prepare a response (setting asset).

#Reporting Method

The party must meet Kiyomizu at least 1 time per month (in-session/out-of-session RP). A domain-castle teahouse, inn, shrine, etc. On reunion:

  1. A PC organizes that period's observations in the Hyakki Yagyo Album copy and submits them.
  2. Kiyomizu asks questions, sketches, and confirms details.
  3. The GM decides the score and reward.

If they do not meet her for a long time: observations fade from memory and scores are reduced (after 1 month or more, -1 point/yoma, GM discretion).

#Act 3 — Milestone Rewards (By Cumulative Yoma Count)

#5 Yoma Observed

Reward:

  • Gold +20 (one-time bonus, separate from observation rewards).
  • Basic Brush-and-Ink Set (基本筆墨): portable tool. Not an equipment slot (Principle 3 does not apply). Observation recording speed +1 thereafter (GM discretion +0~+1 when evaluating observation score).

#10 Yoma Observed

Reward: 1 masterwork tool.

  • Painting Brush "Sansuiboku" (山水墨) -- masterwork tool. Not an equipment slot. While carried, Exorcism and Perception checks +1 (automatically applies when using the Hyakki Yagyo Album). A brush used by Kiyomizu's master.
  • Or, if the PC refuses, 80 gold as an alternative.

#20 Yoma Observed

Reward: 1 masterwork accessory.

  • Divine Beast Inkstone "Sengan-en" (先眼硯) -- masterwork accessory category. While carried, Perception checks +2, initiative modifier against yoma +1. The original owner was an onmyoji from 100 years ago. Kiyomizu bought it as an old object.
  • Principle 3 Equipment Slots: Consumes 1 accessory slot. If another accessory is already worn, it must be replaced.
  • Or 200 gold as an alternative.

#30 Yoma Observed

Reward: 1 masterwork weapon or armor (PC can choose).

Options:

  • A. Weapon "Yomakiri" (妖魔切) -- masterwork uchigatana. Attack +1, yoma-slaying special effect against yoma (on hit, 1→2 Wounds). Principle 3 weapon slot 1. If the PC has the Dual Wielding trait, dual wielding is possible.
  • B. Armor "Yoma Ofuda Armor" (妖魔御札甲) -- masterwork light armor. Defense 13 (light armor normally 12, so +1). Immune to forced Cohesion -1 from yoma attacks. Principle 3 armor slot 1.
  • C. 500 gold as an alternative.

#50 Yoma Observed — Final Reward: Secret Manual "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo"

Completion Scene: Kiyomizu calls the party to a quiet garden in Kagura Domain. Before her lies one completed bestiary. It is thick. The cover is pure white. The book itself gives off a faint light.

"It is complete. This is ... not a simple book. Everything about the 50 yoma you saw is contained here. And -- I attached part of my soul to this book. If you stand before a yoma while holding it, the yoma's name will shine in the book. Understanding them and fearing them are not the same thing. ... Please take it. You are the first owners of this book."

See the separate section below for detailed specifications.

#Step-by-Step Progression Guide

Because this adventure is an ongoing quest, it is presented not by "acts" but as one 5-step table keyed to observation milestones 5, 10, 20, 30, and 50. Each milestone spans different seasons, regions, and psychological phases of the campaign.

#Milestone Progression Guide

50 yoma observedJust before campaign end (16~25 sessions)Place Lord-grade yoma at least 1~2 times; respectfully stage the completion sceneComplete observation of Lord-grade yoma; final reportSecret manual "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo" awarded
  • Success Branch: reach the 50 milestone 1~3 sessions before the campaign climax → the secret manual award is integrated as part of the main campaign story's rewards. The completed bestiary becomes a setting asset for a sequel campaign.
  • Failure Branch: Kiyomizu is attacked and killed → the quest ends permanently, with no successor painter. Only the handouts collected by the party remain (emotional legacy).
  • GM Control: Milestones are reward days, but also narrative turning points for Kiyomizu as a character. At each stage, 5→10→20→30→50, her studio, voice, and health should change little by little. At 10 she is excited. At 20 she is focused. At 30 she is exhausted. At 50 she is calm. This change is the device that makes the party worry about her, and the emotional engine of the ongoing quest. Milestones should be felt not as numbers, but as changes in seasons and in a person.

Narrative Turning Hints by Milestone:

  • 5: Kiyomizu begins to see the party not as "strange clients," but as "reliable witnesses."
  • 10: Stories about Kiyomizu's master begin to emerge -- her personal history opens.
  • 20: Yoma aura begins to steep the studio -- only PCs with high Perception feel it.
  • 30: Kiyomizu says "I am tired" for the first time. The party re-recognizes her as someone to protect.
  • 50: The day of completion. Part of Kiyomizu's soul is transferred into the book. She is alive, but looks a little more transparent than before.

#Secret Manual "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo" — Final Reward Details

#Equipment Classification

  • Category: sacred object/talisman (Principle 3 standard).
  • Uses a slot separate from accessory slots. Can be carried at the same time as the Divine Beast Inkstone (accessory).
  • Because it is a sacred object, the Devotion technique [Understand] condition applies.

#[Understand] Path

This secret manual is a sacred object within Japanese culture, so it differs slightly from foreign sacred-object paths (A-E). Access paths:

  • Automatic for those who complete this quest: if the PC completed this scenario and received it directly from Kiyomizu, automatic resonance (all effects activate immediately).
  • 2nd transferred holder: must be one of the Entertainer, Scholar, Onmyoji, Jodo Monk, Esoteric Monk, or Shugenja classes, and have Master (4 points) or higher in one of Bearing, Sorcery, or Exorcism. If not met, it is just a thick book (no value beyond decoration).

#Effects (When Owner Conditions Are Met)

EffectDescription
Bestiary LookupAt combat start, if the engaged target is one of the 50 yoma recorded in the Hyakki Yagyo Album, automatically reveal 1 known weakness of that yoma (the GM gives the PC actual weakness information, limited to 1 time per combat).
Yoma Negotiation +3Negotiation check modifier from bestiary knowledge. Applies when speaking with that yoma.
Exorcism Support +1Exorcism, barrier, and sealing checks +1 in the same squad and same zone (self or ally support).
Yoma Knowledge Trait EnhancementIf the PC has the [Yoma Knowledge] general trait, 1 additional weakness is revealed (stacks).
Setting ReputationThe book's holder has reputation +3 among exorcism officials of Kagura Domain and neighboring domains. Automatic bonus in political and negotiation scenarios.
Copies Cannot Be MadeBecause part of Kiyomizu's spiritual soul is attached to this book, it cannot be copied. Kagura Domain scholars can study it and make only partial excerpts (GM discretion).

#Special Restrictions

  • If the owner dies: the secret manual closes and waits for a new owner. Another qualified PC in the party can inherit it.
  • Yoma-transformed user: if a PC becomes "a being on the yoma side" through half-yoma or fiend transformation, the secret manual rejects them -- effects are lost. They return after liberation.
  • Loss/destruction: the GM should handle this carefully. If lost, Kagura Domain launches a major search commission (turns into a scenario hook).

#Yoma Grade Reference (Observation Score Coefficient)

This scenario uses the co-06-units classification:

  • Mob (雜): the weakest yoma, killed instantly when attacked (kozubu-oni, lesser yoma).
  • Minion (卒): Wounds 1 squad-unit yoma (ashigaru-grade oni, packs of wolf-people).
  • Veteran (練): Wounds 2~3 mid-tier yoma (trained oni, karasu-tengu).
  • Elite (將): Wounds 3~4 individual yoma (oo-oni, spider oni).
  • Lord (主): Wounds 3+Physique or higher legendary yoma (Tamamo-no-Mae, Shuten-doji).

Note: heroic spirits, fiends, and humans (including villains) are not yoma → outside the Hyakki Yagyo Album's target scope. Limited to pure "yoma" species. If ambiguous, the GM decides.

#Cumulative Observation Reward Example

73 graveyard yoma speciesnewmultiple species~180
81 Lord-grade yoma new (complete observation)new + 5 points5 × 1.5 × 25 = 187 + bonus~200
  • Cumulative observed yoma count: about 15~20 species. The 2nd-stage milestone (10) is guaranteed, and the 3rd stage (20) is near.
  • Cumulative gold: 900~1200.

On a 12~15-session campaign, the 30 milestone is reached; with 20~25 sessions, 50 is completed. This is equivalent to a 1~2-year real-time campaign. It is a long journey.

#GM Operation Tips

#1. Observation Incentive Mechanism

If PCs usually focus only on combat and neglect detailed observation, their score is low. Guide PC attention through description:

  • "The oni's horn slants left. It is not natural."
  • "The color of the kappa's plate is not the green of usual legend -- it is red."
  • "The ash this yoma left after death is not ordinary ash."

#2. Observation Itself Contributes to Combat

Observation category 3 (special ability identification) requires 1 Perception check. If this check succeeds during combat, the PC understands that yoma's special-ability weakness in real time. It is not merely "report after observation"; it contributes to victory in combat.

#3. Managing Threats to Kiyomizu

Kiyomizu has no combat power. Bringing her to the battlefield is dangerous. If the PCs want to bring her along, convert it into an escort mission. If she is attacked and killed, the quest ends permanently (no successor painter).

#4. Rhythm of an Ongoing Quest

  • Last 5 minutes of the session: "summarize yoma encountered this session + calculate observation scores."
  • Reunion with Kiyomizu is a monthly 1-time mini-RP. 5~10 minutes.
  • When milestone rewards are given, stage a respectful scene -- not just item delivery, but a small ceremony.

#5. Later Setting Use

If the campaign continues after the secret manual "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo" is completed:

  • Other domain lords or monk groups covet the book or try to borrow it (political hook).
  • Follow-up research based on the secret manual (developing counters to new yoma) can become the axis of the next campaign.
  • Kiyomizu retires into seclusion or starts a new project after completing the work (sequel scenario hook).

#6. Match the 50 Milestone to the Campaign Ending

The GM should tune this quest so it works as a subplot for the entire campaign. Reaching 50 within 1~3 sessions before the campaign end is ideal. At that point, the secret manual award = part of the campaign climax reward.

#Advancement and Growth Effects (Rules Consistency)

Konsei Reiyotan has no XP system. This quest contributes to Advancement Conditions as follows:

  • Repeated success on Perception checks (Perception, Exorcism/Sorcery) → can count as "realization related to skill use" (1 time per session at GM discretion).
  • Milestone reached (10, 20, 30, 50) → each can count as 1 "narrative milestone."
  • Secret manual award scene → major narrative milestone.

Cumulative advancement contribution is enough to contribute meaningfully to 2~4 advancements over a very long campaign (about 2 years).

#Gold Reward Summary

  • 06-units — yoma grade classification (Mob/Minion/Veteran/Elite/Lord).
  • co-08-02 Yoma Bestiary — stat blocks for each yoma. Observation target pool.
  • co-04-07-12 Entertainer Class — Kiyomizu's basis.
  • co-07-02 Masterwork Catalog — registration point for additional masterwork rewards from this quest, such as Sansuiboku, Sengan-en, Yomakiri, and Yoma Ofuda Armor.
  • co-07-04 Foreign Sacred Objects — reference for the Devotion technique [Understand] path (the secret manual is a domestic sacred object, but uses a similar mechanism).
  • Core Interpretation Principles — direct application of Principle 3 Equipment Slots (accessory vs sacred-object/talisman distinction). The secret manual uses a sacred-object/talisman slot, while the inkstone uses an accessory slot → both can be equipped at the same time.
  • co-04-02 Progression — advancement contribution rules.

"She has never held a blade. But the bestiary she completed may be stronger than a thousand blades. Because that book says: We know what you have seen. For the first time, truly, the yoma are afraid."
