[New Rule] Barrier Anomaly d100

The core rules only have "damage" and "maintenance" for the Barrier. This supplement quantifies 100 tremors in intermediate states. It includes not only weakening and strengthening, but also anomalies: narrative events beyond raw numbers.


#Scent — When the Thin Skin Breathes

The Barrier is one thin sheet of skin.

The hemispherical wall Hoshino raised that night is called a Barrier, but its shape is closer to skin. It breathes. It trembles. It hurts. It itches. Sometimes it sings.

This skin has no eyes, no mouth, and no ears. But it senses.

When a chain grows from outside and touches it, it itches. When a black, blood-colored wind blows, it shrinks. When residents pray, it warms. When a child cries, it trembles. When Hoshino weakens, it thins with him.

Each week, one of 100 tremors occurs.

This table organizes those 100. Most can be converted into numbers. Some cannot be converted into numbers. Those we call anomalies.


#Law — Rolling Protocol

  • Timing: Every week, on Sunday night immediately before the Barrier maintenance check, or as an extra roll if the Barrier HP changes by more than 5 during the week.
  • Secret roll recommended: Present it as something only Hoshino knows. Whether to relay the result to the PCs is Hoshino's judgment.

#Commentary — Using Each Segment

#Accumulation Logic of the Weakening Segment

The 40 weakening results accumulate. A single -2 can be recovered with one infusion. But if -2 appears for 4 weeks in a row, the domain cannot keep up with infusions.

The key is that small weakening accumulates every week. Several small events are more dangerous than one large event.

What the GM should watch in the weakening segment:

  • Manage core stock with the possibility that 01~40 can appear every week in mind.
  • PCs can mitigate weakening when they intervene actively (see choices).
  • Hoshino's weakening can become the hidden cause of weakening.

#Rarity of the Strengthening Segment

The 25 strengthening results are rare. The 41~65 range on d100. A 25% die chance.

However, the GM can openly guide conditional strengthening. Example: hint that "if the residents pray, the Barrier grows stronger."

Especially important in the strengthening segment:

  • 49 core synthesis and 54 Lord core link directly through the core economy.
  • 52 Lord-grade yoma kill week is the emotional ripple of a delayed reward.
  • 60 Hoshino's Awakening is rare. 1~2 times per campaign.

#Narrative Weight of the Anomaly Segment

The 35 anomalies carry meaning that cannot be converted into numbers. Barrier HP may change, but the essence is story.

Four layers for interpreting anomalies:

  1. Warning (73, 76, 92, 97, etc.): Signals a coming crisis.
  2. Gift (70, 73, 81, 95, 99, etc.): A blessing received without a reason.
  3. Trial (66, 67, 71, 86, 91, etc.): Demands a PC choice.
  4. Turning Point (75, 93, 98, 100, etc.): Changes the campaign flow.

Principle when the GM uses an anomaly: do not interpret it immediately. It is better to leave anomalies to the players' imagination. Say only "the Barrier smells of flowers" and do not explain why. It is better if the reason emerges a few weeks later.


Many Barrier events connect to Hoshino's weakening.

#Hoshino Burns His Life

Moments when Hoshino burns his life for emergency Barrier maintenance are explicitly marked in the following weakening-segment events:

  • 19 Hoshino's Cough (-1/6)
  • 27 Hoshino Collapses (-1/4)
  • 35 Barrier Aging (-1/8)
  • 39 Lord-Rank Yoma Almost Breaks Through (-1/3)

If these incidents accumulate, Hoshino becomes completely spent in Chapters 4~5. The GM can deliberately design that timing.


#Chapter 1 (Reviving Hell) — Basic

All events as written. The weakening segment appears in its lightest form.

Frequency of 11, 31 in the weakening segment +10%. Scenes of chains growing outside the Barrier repeat.

Frequency of 71, 76, 79, 82, 87, 92 in the anomaly segment +10%. Sounds from the Barrier become a major motif.

Frequency of 17, 24, 37 in the weakening segment +10%. Temperature changes inside the Barrier. Iron taste in the air.

#Chapter 5 (Avici Hell) — All Anomalies Weighted

Overall anomaly-segment frequency +20%. Especially 66, 71, 86, 91, 93, 98, 100. The Barrier itself seems to gain a self.


#Barrier Maintenance Routine (Hoshino Scene)

Every Sunday night. Roll this table together with the Barrier maintenance check.

#Standard Routine

  1. Sunday evening: residents gather before the shrine.
  2. Hoshino kneels before the Barrier. Akihisa stands beside him.
  3. Roll this table's d100. (secret)
  4. Based on the result, Hoshino requests the needed cores.
  5. A PC delivers the cores. Hoshino infuses them.
  6. Barrier maintenance check 2d10 + proficiency. Target number 11.
  7. On success, Barrier HP is maintained. On failure, add Barrier HP -3.

#PC Roles

  • Core transport: Check stock, choose the appropriate grade.
  • Onmyoji assistance: Target Number 13. On success, maintenance check +2.
  • Handling residents: Lead the prayer. Target Number 11. On success, morale +1.

#Example — One Week's Barrier Roll

Chapter 2, week 6. Sunday night.

The GM rolls d100 (secret). Result: 34.

34 Two Impacts — Two different yoma each strike once. Barrier HP -8.

GM presentation:


Sunday evening. Hoshino kneels before the shrine. Suddenly his body bends backward. His eyes roll white.

"From the north... two came."

Hoshino's fingers tremble. Akihisa grabs his shoulder. Hoshino speaks again.

"They struck twice. It did not break. But... deep. They went deep."

If you look up at the Barrier's northern face, blue light still remains. But from a distance, one northern section is clearly thin.

Current Barrier HP: 67 → 59.

PC choices:

  • Immediate infusion: Use 2 Veteran cores. Barrier HP +30. Final Barrier HP 89.
  • Conservative infusion: Use 1 Minion core. Barrier HP +7. Final Barrier HP 66.
  • Delay infusion: Keep Barrier HP as is. Accept next week's crisis risk.


#Appendix — Expanded Notes on Selected Anomaly Events (10)

#71 The Barrier Speaks

One of the heaviest anomalies on this table. The Barrier says one sentence: "I remember."

Interpretation:

  • Who remembers? The Barrier? Hoshino? The domain itself?
  • What is remembered? The past? The future? The cause of the drift?
  • Why speak now? Why does only this PC hear it?

GM recommended handling:

  • Do not explain it. Let it speak and wait for the PC's reaction.
  • It is effective if Hoshino casually mutters the same words a few days later.
  • Leave the meaning of this one sentence as a maze until the campaign's later half, then connect it in the final chapter.

#75 Past Life Inside the Barrier

An anomaly linked to a PC's personal arc. At one point in the Barrier, one PC's past life is visible.

Example scene:

  • The PC sees themselves in another age, with another name and another face.
  • The past-life PC also sees the current PC. Their eyes meet.
  • After a moment, the scene disappears.

Linking:

  • Add one line to that PC's backstory.
  • No attribute modifier. But it is a narrative root.

#86 New Door in the Barrier

The most dangerous story trigger on this table. One door appears in the western Barrier.

GM handling:

  • No one made it. Hoshino is surprised too.
  • What is there if the door opens? The GM decides. It can link to a Chapter 3 branch.
  • Sealing it causes Barrier HP -3. But it is safe.
  • Investigating creates a major story turn. Very dangerous, but worthwhile.

#92 Bird Perches on the Barrier

Warning anomaly. One black bird perches on the Barrier and says: "The king is coming."

Meaning:

  • The "king" may be a king of hell, another lord, or the ruler of a Lord-grade yoma.
  • The GM plans to fulfill this prophecy 2~3 weeks later.
  • Fear +3. An extremely intense scene.

#99 Barrier Bud

The rarest positive anomaly. A bud of a new Barrier blooms from the Barrier surface.

Meaning:

  • The fruit of Hoshino's public service, or of the PCs' good deeds.
  • Barrier HP +20 is a large reward. More important than that: it suggests the Barrier has its own will.
  • In the Chapter 5 final battle, this bud may grow into a second Barrier.

#100 Threshold of Avici

The most ultimate anomaly on this table. A door appears inside the Barrier. Beyond it lies Avici Hell.

GM handling:

  • The start of Chapter 5 developments.
  • One PC is drawn to this door. The GM designates which PC.
  • Hoshino says: "This is... inside us."
  • Exposure +2 occurs simply from seeing that door.

"The Barrier is a single breath." — Hoshino Gensho.

"The Barrier is skin. If it does not tear, it trembles." — Hoshino Gensho, teaching Akihisa the core of Barrier maintenance.

"Every night I speak to the Barrier. There are days it does not answer. There are days it answers. The days it does not answer are more frightening." — Hoshino Gensho, just after the night the Barrier spoke.


#Appendix B — Barrier Event Interaction Matrix

Barrier events have single occurrences and chain occurrences. When the GM rolls an event for a week, consider its relationship to the previous week's event.

If weakening appears for 2 consecutive weeks, the GM may explicitly increase the chance of strengthening. Reasons:

  • Residents voluntarily increase prayer.
  • Hoshino enters a tense mode.
  • PCs raise the priority of core procurement.

This is "narrative balancing." Story rhythm adjusts numeric randomness.


#Appendix C — Barrier Erosion Tendencies by Hell

The 5 hell chapters each exert a distinct influence on the Barrier.

#Reviving Hell (Chapter 1)

Barrier erosion is light. Most events are in the weakening -2~-4 range.

Unique tendencies:

  • "Forms reflected in the Barrier like ghosts" (anomaly 66 often)
  • Low-frequency "footsteps heard from outside the Barrier"

#Black Rope Hell (Chapter 2)

Chain scratches on the Barrier become common.

Unique tendencies:

  • Weakening 11 and 31 each +10%
  • Narrative scenes of chains growing into the inside of the Barrier (linked to 20-03 anomaly 80)
  • Northern Barrier face especially vulnerable

#Screaming Hell (Chapter 3)

The Barrier makes sounds. Weeping, songs, screams.

Unique tendencies:

  • Anomaly 70, 76, 82 frequency +10%
  • Hallucinations of boiling water inside the Barrier
  • Residents begin singing the Barrier's song (morale ±1)

#Scorching Heat Hell (Chapter 4)

The Barrier heats up. Internal temperature changes.

Unique tendencies:

  • Weakening 17, 24, 37 frequency +10%
  • Barrier briefly turns red
  • Hoshino sweats before the Barrier (a phenomenon not seen before)

#Avici Hell (Chapter 5)

The Barrier thinks. A bud of selfhood.

Unique tendencies:

  • Overall anomaly frequency +20%
  • Barrier reacts selectively to PCs
  • Actual occurrence chance of 99 "Barrier Bud" is highest
  • 100 "Threshold of Avici" is the final trigger

#20 One Point Goes Out

The most ominous weakening event. One part of the Barrier goes completely out for a moment.

Presentation:

  • Midday or early evening.

GM recommended response:

  • After this event, Hoshino says one sentence: "That place is weak. Remember it."
  • Recommend reinforcing scouting in that direction.

#59 One Breath of the Barrier

The greatest strengthening in the strengthening segment. It has the same name as positive event 30 in 20-01, but here it is the Barrier's own response.

Presentation:

  • Dawn. A few residents feel it first.
  • Air is drawn in once, then breathed out.
  • The whole Barrier brightens once.
  • Hoshino says, "It remembers us."

Effect:

  • Barrier HP +10 immediately.
  • Morale +2 (indirect).
  • Hoshino weakening -0.5 (very slight recovery).

#73 Reflection of the Domain Inside the Barrier

The most poetic anomaly.

Presentation:

  • The Barrier reflects inward like a mirror.
  • For 30 minutes, the whole domain appears on the Barrier surface.
  • PCs and residents see themselves. But without mirror reversal.
  • Hoshino says, "This is how the Barrier remembers you."

Effect:

  • Morale +2.
  • Barrier HP +3.
  • One PC may see a hidden mark in this reflection (GM-set).

#87 Knock from Outside the Barrier

The most frightening anomaly.

Presentation:

  • Midnight. Several residents wake.
  • From outside the Barrier: knock. Knock. Knock. Three times.
  • Human-hand sized.
  • Location: western Barrier.
  • No one answers.

Effect:

  • Fear +2.
  • A special clue may be found in the next scouting to the west.
  • Possible warning related to 20-04 rumor 62, "a giant king in the east."

GM recommendation:

  • After this event, Akihisa may issue an order forbidding approach near the Barrier.
  • But if the PCs go to check, there is nothing outside. Whoever knocked is gone.
  • This mystery remains for a few days, then at some point is completely forgotten. As if it never happened.

#99 Barrier Bud

The most positive anomaly.

Presentation:

  • Just before dawn. Hoshino runs out of the shrine.
  • A small new Barrier blooms at one point in the Barrier.
  • Size of Hoshino's handprint.
  • This small Barrier emits light inward into the larger Barrier.
  • Hoshino laughs and cries.

Effect:

  • Barrier HP +20 immediately.
  • Morale +3.
  • Long-term effect: This bud can grow into a second Barrier in the next Chapter 5 final battle. The GM should reflect it in the scenario.

Narrative meaning:

  • The moment Hoshino's life bears fruit.
  • Proof that the domain can bring forth life even in the Spirit Realm.
  • Akihisa's leadership bears fruit on the spiritual level.

#Appendix E — PC Onmyoji Barrier Assistance

Special interaction if one of the PCs has the onmyoji class.

#Basic Assistance Rule

  • PC onmyoji attends the Sunday night Barrier maintenance check.
  • Target Number 13 (based on PC attributes). On success, Hoshino check +2.
  • On failure, no effect (Hoshino checks alone).

#Deepening Assistance

If the onmyoji PC becomes close to Hoshino (Affinity 5+):

  • Joint infusion becomes possible. One core increases Barrier HP recovery by +5.
  • Purification rite unlocked. Purify Spirit Realm energy inside the domain 1 time (1 time per week).
  • Dream transfer becomes possible. The PC shares Hoshino's dream.

#Cost to the Onmyoji PC

The more the onmyoji PC helps the Barrier, the more they are also consumed.
