#5 Human Partners

Contents

The five people introduced in this chapter are people of the domain. They are alive, exhausted, wounded — and have decided to live through tomorrow regardless. This file covers how the PC becomes entangled in that resolve.

Safety Reminder

Romance with Akihisa (age 16) goes only as far as Affinity 8 (Stage 4) — a promise of marriage within the session. Beyond that is epilogue only, and even then without adult depiction. Session 0 consent is required. Tables that decline deactivate this entry entirely.

#1. Kamijo Akihisa — Young Lord

Kamijo Akihisa, young lord, complete upper body from head to waist, holding his father's wakizashi with both hands, hesitant but formal posture, a tea cup and blank scroll edge.

#Scent — Can He Be Loved?

Akihisa is sixteen. He first became conscious of something called love in the diary from the night of the drift's beginning. But even in that diary he wrote only "I am the one who stands here," and recorded nothing of his own feelings. He was taught that emotion is a luxury a lord cannot afford.

Romance directed toward Akihisa therefore becomes the story of him permitting himself that luxury for the first time. The PC becomes the person to whom that permission is given.

His love is slow. There is no sudden passion. One long glance, a long silence, and a quiet confession on the final night. Even that confession will come in the form of "I cannot say it yet."

#Basic Information

  • Age: 16
  • Status: kokujin local lord, head of the Kamijo clan
  • Preferred Heart: 慈 · 忠
  • Rejected Heart: 魔 · 虛
  • Base Difficulty: 7
  • Starting Affinity: 2
  • In-Session Maximum Stage: 4 (Affinity 8, "a promise of marriage")

#Affinity Stage Attitude Changes

Officially endorses Akihisa's judgment+1
Shares late-night tea during long work hours+0.5

Evades responsibility when casualties occur-2
Disrespectful speech or conduct toward residents (betrays Heart 慈)-2
Insults the clan-3

#Stage 2 Event — "Tea at Midnight"

Unlock: Affinity 4.

Scene: Mid-Chapter 2. Akihisa is writing in his diary in the study when he sees the PC passing by through the window. He fiddles with the kettle and asks, "Would you step inside for a moment?"

Content:

  • Akihisa brews the tea himself. His hands seem to tremble — or perhaps not.
  • Conversation topics: the first night of the drift, his father, the names of the residents.
  • Akihisa asks about the PC's past for the first time. "Where are you from?"

Check: Negotiation or Wisdom. On a great success, a fragment of the diary is revealed:

"Today I served tea to ___. I do not know whether it is proper for a lord to serve tea. Yet before this person I was able to be, for a brief moment, something other than a lord. What kind of mistake this is, I will understand later."

#Stage 3 Event — "The Night of the Scroll"

Unlock: Affinity 6.

Scene: Akihisa is about to open his father's sealed scroll for the first time. He asks the PC, "Would you be willing to be beside me?"

Content:

  • The scroll contains a warning his father left just before the drift — that the Kagamiyama Domain is "a land holding the magnetic force of the Spirit Realm," and "if this land should fall, I pray the path I chose was right"
  • Akihisa reads it and is silent for a long time. He takes the PC's hand (the first time in his life he has reached for another person's hand first).
  • "Thank you… for being here."

Check: Bearing. On a success, enters Stage 3; Affinity +2.

#Stage 4 Event — "The Night of the Promise of Marriage"

Unlock: Affinity 8.

Scene: Chapter 4 or Chapter 5. The night before the campaign's pivotal decisive battle. Akihisa calls the PC out.

Content:

Akihisa is in the courtyard. Moonlight illuminates one half of his face. He has drawn his father's wakizashi from his hip and holds it in both hands. He says:

"I may die tomorrow. You may die tomorrow. I know that.

Only this — if I live and come of age, let me say these words once more at that time. Words I have no right to say now, being still unformed. Will you wait for me?"

He hands the wakizashi to the PC. "I entrust this to you. If I live and am unable to come for it, that will be my answer."

Check: None. The PC's response is itself the check.

  • If PC accepts: Stage 4 confirmed. Obtains Akihisa's wakizashi (symbolic).
  • If PC refuses: Affinity drops to 7; relationship shifts to "trusted confidant." Wakizashi remains with Akihisa.
  • If PC defers: Affinity held; reunion at the ending.

#Epilogue — Marriage or Reunion (equivalent to Stage 5)

#Ending A (Return) — Marriage

If the PC returns to the core-book world:

  • 3 years pass. Akihisa is 19. The PC seeks out the Kagamiyama Domain again (core-book world geography).
  • Akihisa formally proposes marriage, according to clan protocol.
  • After the marriage, the PC becomes a member of the Kamijo clan — or maintains a separate household by agreement.

#Ending B (Settlement) — Spirit Realm Marriage

  • Akihisa is 18. Coronation as Spirit Realm lord. Marriage immediately follows.
  • The PC becomes a kokujin consort of the Spirit Realm.
  • Children are born as "Spirit Realm native humans."

#Ending C (Transformation) — A Promise of Parting

  • If the PC has undergone Transformation, Akihisa promises one reunion per year in place of marriage.
  • After 7 years of this ritual, Akihisa marries in the core-book world. The PC withdraws quietly.

#Akihisa's Unique Ending — The Wakizashi of Soundlessness

Akihisa's wakizashi bears an imprint reading "soundless (無聲)." When the PC, having maintained Affinity 8+ through the ending, returns the wakizashi, Akihisa:

  • Asks that new characters be added to the blade: "Two Hearts"
  • Engraves one character of the PC's name onto the sword
  • This sword is afterward passed down to Akihisa's descendants. "Your name remains in our clan."

#Safety Guidelines

  • Physical contact extends to holding hands and embracing. Stage 4, "The Night of the Promise of Marriage," also remains at the level of hand-holding.
  • Adult depiction is prohibited. Stage 5 "marriage" is epilogue narration only — no concrete scene.
  • If the table is uncomfortable, deactivate this entry entirely. Can be run with Affinity capped at 3.

#GM Notes

  • Akihisa's love is indistinguishable from duty: His treating the PC as "precious" does not necessarily mean love. This ambiguity is both the appeal and the tension.
  • He does not say it in words: Akihisa's feelings come through action, silence, and gaze. Words like "I love you" do not appear until Stage 4.
  • Depict his age: Do not omit the awkwardness of a sixteen-year-old boy. Nearly dropping the teacup; looking away.
  • His father's shadow: Every one of Akihisa's feelings carries the legacy of his father. For the PC to understand Akihisa is also to read the father's scroll together.

#2. Kagemitsu — Young Samurai

Kagemitsu, young retainer samurai, complete upper body from head to waist, training sword lowered after practice, fierce open expression, one protective step forward, practice.

#Scent — Love Like Fire

Kagemitsu is twenty-two. He lost his father, lost his mother, and now serves Lord Akihisa as one might serve a god. His world consists of roughly three people — the lord, Toma, and himself. When the PC enters the circle of those three, Kagemitsu's world is reorganized.

His love is ardent. He has never learned to conceal his feelings, nor does he intend to. If he likes the PC he says so; if he wants to protect the PC he puts his own neck forward first. But that it might become a burden — this he only understands later.

#Basic Information

  • Age: 22
  • Status: Kamijo retainer, samurai rank 1
  • Preferred Heart: 覇 · 忠
  • Rejected Heart: 虛 · 魔
  • Base Difficulty: 6
  • Starting Affinity: 2
  • In-Session Maximum Stage: 5

#Affinity Stage Attitude Changes

AffinityAttitude
0~2Polite address. "Honored one." Treats PC as a colleague
3~5Casual speech mixed in. Can request Swordsmanship instruction
6~7Calls PC "you" (plain form). Together at the training ground
8~9No hesitation in open expressions of affection
10"I offer this sword" — identification of loyalty with love

#Affinity Changes — Kagemitsu Specific

#Rise Factors

ActionIncrease
Saves Kagemitsu in joint combat+2
Offers sincere thanks when Kagemitsu saves the PC+1
Trains Swordsmanship together+0.5 (1 time/session)
Takes the lead in defending the lord+2 (覇 alignment)
Publicly praises Kagemitsu's swordsmanship+1
Shares drinks together+0.5

#Fall Factors

ActionDecrease
Speaks ill of the lord in the lord's presence-3 (lethal)
Openly mocks Kagemitsu-2
Prioritizes retreat or flight-1 (betrays 覇)
Openly flaunts intimacy with Komachi-1 (jealousy)

#Stage 2 Event — "Night at the Training Ground"

Unlock: Affinity 4.

Scene: End of Chapter 1 to Chapter 2. Kagemitsu is alone in the training ground swinging a wooden sword. When the PC enters, he turns around.

Content:

  • Kagemitsu asks for "a round." Wooden-sword sparring.
  • After the sparring, wiping sweat, he says: "What did you come all the way here for, anyway. This domain — it's the Spirit Realm, and it could fall apart any moment."
  • Depending on the PC's answer, he asks his first personal question.

Check: 2d10 + Courage + Swordsmanship >= 13 (sparring standard). Great success (double) → Affinity +2; ordinary success → +1; failure → +0 (no ill feeling).

#Stage 3 Event — "Mother's Keepsake"

Unlock: Affinity 6.

Scene: Kagemitsu calls the PC to his room. He opens a small box — a silver mirror. His mother's.

Content:

"When I look at this mirror, I find myself thinking about why I was angry. Mother taught me that.

Today I was looking at the mirror and… I wasn't angry. It was something else.

It's your fault. Not that I dislike you — I just now realized that I like you."

Check: None. The PC responds.

  • PC accepts: Stage 3 confirmed. Affinity +2.
  • PC refuses: Affinity -1; Kagemitsu keeps his distance for a while. Retry possible after 3 sessions.

#Stage 4 Event — "The Night of Gyoei"

Unlock: Affinity 8.

Scene: Kagemitsu carries his katana "Gyoei (曉影)" and calls the PC to the courtyard.

Content:

"This sword is my father's. I believed that using this sword to protect you was how I served my father. But now — I'm using this sword for you. Not for my father.

I don't know whether this is loyalty or betrayal. I say it to you only: this sword is yours now. My life is an extension of that."

Check: None.

  • Accept: The PC keeps the katana "Gyoei" overnight. Returns it the next day, but from then on Kagemitsu considers this sword the PC's. Affinity +1 = 9.
  • Refuse: Affinity -2 = drops to 6. Kagemitsu withdraws.

#Stage 5 — Union

Conditions to reach Affinity 10:

  • After Stage 4, the PC and Kagemitsu together fulfill a shared duty (lord escort, decisive battle, etc.)
  • The PC walks with Kagemitsu without shaking his Heart 覇
  • Chooses "marriage" in Ending A or B

Upon union:

  • Ending A (Return): Kagemitsu accompanies to the core-book world. Founds a new clan or joins the PC's clan.
  • Ending B (Settlement): Kagemitsu founds a new clan in the Spirit Realm. PC accompanies.
  • Ending C (Transformation): Kagemitsu cannot follow through Transformation. Tragedy branch (below).

#Kagemitsu's Unique Ending — "The Inheritance of Gyoei"

Ending after reaching Affinity 10:

  • Kagemitsu's katana "Gyoei" is fully transferred to the PC. His father's keepsake is now the PC's.
  • Kagemitsu changes his name to the PC's clan name (a redefinition, not annihilation of ego).
  • If children are born, "Gyoei" is passed to the eldest son.

#Tragedy Branch — "The Cost of Fanatical Loyalty"

Kagemitsu is the partner most likely to die before the PC, because he repeatedly leads with "I'll go first" in sieges and decisive battles.

  • If Kagemitsu falls in battle while at Affinity 8+:
  • His death causes the PC's Three Ways and Six Hearts 虛 +3 tilt (loss).
  • His katana "Gyoei" remains in the PC's hands. Thereafter, when the PC fights with this sword: additional attack +1, Defense -1 (the violence of grief).
  • Kagemitsu's final words (example): "You live. Live and… live. That was all I could do."

#Safety Guidelines

  • Ensure Kagemitsu's intense emotions do not become a burden on the player. Agree in advance: "Tell me if it feels like too much."
  • His fanatical loyalty is both an appeal and a toxin. The GM balances both sides.

#GM Notes

  • Repeated passion grows tiresome. One or two intense confessions outweigh continuous declarations.
  • The fracture point: Kagemitsu serves the lord like a god, but when the PC clashes with the lord he wavers for the first time. That wavering is the drama.
  • The language of the sword: He expresses himself through the sword more than through words. Training together is, in itself, a date.

#3. Komachi — Female Shinobi

Komachi, female shinobi, complete upper body from head to waist, hand closing a small lacquer box with no markings, eyes turned away as if hiding a truth, castle wall line barely.

#Scent — A Hand in the Shadows

Komachi is twenty-four. She has never loved. She believes she has never been loved. Her world is made of reports, Infiltration, and information, and emotion is a flaw that damages her world's efficiency. But even flaws find their place.

Romance with the PC begins in darkness. She does not speak to the PC in daylight. In the night corridor, in a room where moonlight does not enter, in places filled with smoke. The day she tells the PC she loves them may never come — and yet she acts in ways that make the PC notice.

#Basic Information

  • Age: 24
  • Status: Kamijo retainer, ninpo user rank 3 (double loyalty)
  • Preferred Heart: 虛 · 眞
  • Rejected Heart: 覇 (showing off)
  • Base Difficulty: 8
  • Starting Affinity: 1
  • In-Session Maximum Stage: 5

#Affinity Stage Attitude Changes

AffinityAttitude
0~2Only watches. Avoids eye contact
3~5Brief night conversation. Shares a cigarette
6~7Discloses part of a secret. Teaches poison-making
8~9Reveals double loyalty. "I leave the choice to you"
10Single employer (PC). Shinobi missions only on PC's orders

#Affinity Changes — Komachi Specific

#Rise Factors

ActionIncrease
Keeps Komachi's secret+2
Quiet conversation (not public)+0.5
Scouting or Infiltration together+1
Does not pry into her past+1 (respect)
Tells the truth (Deceit detected)+1 (眞 alignment)

#Fall Factors

ActionDecrease
Reveals her secret to others-5 (lethal)
Public affectionate address as "Komachi-san"-2
Gets caught lying-2
Treats her only as "a shinobi worker"-1

#Stage 2 Event — "The Night Rampart"

Unlock: Affinity 4.

Scene: Komachi is smoking on the castle rampart at night. The PC approaches.

Content:

She has known the PC was coming since she heard the footsteps, a while ago. Yet she does not turn around.

"… You have no sense. You don't know whether I want to be alone, or want to be with someone."

(After silence) "One of the two is right. Figure it out."

Check: Wisdom or Negotiation. On a great success, she makes room beside her (Affinity +2).

On a failure, she stands and leaves (Affinity -0.5).

#Stage 3 Event — "The Lacquered Box"

Unlock: Affinity 6 + after double loyalty is revealed.

Scene: Komachi calls the PC to her room. She opens a lacquered box with a key worn at her neck.

Content:

Inside the box: a bundle of sealed letters. Orders from a former employer (another clan).

"This is what I really am. I had no reason to show you. But today I show you.

Because you're watching me. Even when I'm not here, it seems like you're watching me. It isn't surveillance. I know surveillance better than anyone. This is something different.

… I don't know what this is. Do you?"

Check: Bearing. On a success, enters Stage 3 + Affinity +2. On a great success, translates the letters (Komachi's full past revealed).

#Stage 4 Event — "The End of Smoke"

Unlock: Affinity 8.

Scene: Komachi stands like a shadow before the PC's door. Without a sound.

Content:

"Can I come in?" (The first time she, who always entered without permission, asks.)

(She enters and sits. She removes her face covering — the first time, a fully revealed face.)

"Almost no one has seen this face. Except my mother. You're the second.

… If you want, I'll stay. Not just tonight — every night. But I don't know what that is. You won't either. Let's just start."

Check: None. Fade out.

  • Accept: Stage 4 confirmed. Affinity +2.
  • Refuse: Affinity -3. Komachi returns to her room; keeps her distance for 3 sessions.

#Stage 5 — Union

Conditions to reach Affinity 10:

  • After Stage 4, the PC takes Komachi's side in the double-loyalty incident
  • Disposes of the former employer's letters together (burns them or uses as evidence)
  • Converts Komachi to "single employer" — the PC — at the ending

Upon union:

  • She may abandon the name "Komachi" — using the PC's clan name, or choosing a new name.
  • She may not formally marry. She maintains the relationship in the form of a "contract". She insists it is "a stronger promise than marriage."

#Komachi's Unique Ending — "The Silver Ring"

A small silver ring on Komachi's right ring finger. Something she could never remove since childhood.

  • At Affinity 10 union: She allows the ring to be cut for the first time.
  • The PC asks the blacksmith Yukichi to cut the ring. The inscription on the inside: her mother's name.
  • The moment Komachi sees that inscription, she cries for the first time. That night is her night of emotional release.
  • The ring is melted down and made into a pair of new rings — one each for the PC and Komachi.

#Tragedy Branch — "The Blade of Betrayal"

If Komachi's double loyalty is never resolved and reaches the ending:

  • In the final decisive battle of Chapter 5, Komachi betrays or sacrifices herself for the PC.
  • If Affinity was 8+: She takes her own life after the betrayal. Final words: "Protecting you — this was the best I could do."
  • PC's Three Ways and Six Hearts 虛 +5 tilt. Difficult to recover even after the campaign.

#Safety Guidelines

  • Komachi's poor emotional expressiveness is part of her appeal. Avoid the excessive "ice queen" cliché. Depict mistakes and awkwardness.
  • The betrayal risk of her double loyalty applies only with the player's prior consent.
  • Her former employer (possibly a rival clan depending on PC background) influences the ending.

#GM Notes

  • Use night scenes: All of Komachi's important scenes involve night, smoke, and darkness.
  • The conversation of eyes: She speaks through her gaze. Describe the length and angle of her glances.
  • Omit the words: Do not spare the "…" pauses. Her appeal lies in what she does not say.
  • The silver ring is the last: The revelation of the inscription in the silver ring happens once in a campaign. Hold it in reserve.

#4. Minako — Female Physician

Minako, woman physician, complete upper body from head to waist, holding a blank foreign medical book and a simple medicine pouch, calm cold mercy in her gaze, sleeves and book.

#Scent — Cold Mercy

Minako is thirty-one. She lost her parents to the persecution of Christianity and lives with her faith hidden inside her clothes. Her mercy is a physician's mercy — saving patients is a duty, not an emotion. At least on the surface.

Romance with the PC is defined by the gap between surface and interior. The day she says "I love you" to the PC may never come. Instead she will say "Please stay with me." She does not want a traditional marriage. She wants neither a wedding vow nor membership in a clan. Only to be together.

#Basic Information

  • Age: 31
  • Status: Physician resident at Kamijo, Outsider rank 1 (secret Kirishitan)
  • Preferred Heart: 眞 · 慈
  • Rejected Heart: 覇
  • Base Difficulty: 7
  • Starting Affinity: 1
  • In-Session Maximum Stage: 5

#Affinity Stage Attitude Changes

AffinityAttitude
0~2Professional manner. Speaks only during treatment
3~5Personal conversation. Medical discussion permitted
6~7Reveals cross necklace. A few words of Portuguese
8~9"Let us stay up through the night together" — accompanies research and care
10Companion relationship (not marriage, not contract — "being together")

#Affinity Changes — Minako Specific

#Rise Factors

ActionIncrease
Jointly treats the seriously wounded+1
Respects her medical advice+0.5
Shows willingness to learn Western texts or Portuguese+1
Keeps her secret (Christianity)+2
Sincere conversation+1 (眞 alignment)

#Fall Factors

ActionDecrease
Condemns Christianity-3 (lethal)
Treats her Western knowledge as superstition-2
Interferes with treatment decisions through emotional appeals-1
Repeatedly asks about "your homeland"-1 (wounds)

#Stage 2 Event — "The Night of Latin"

Unlock: Affinity 4.

Scene: Late at night, Minako is reading an old book in the infirmary. The PC enters.

Content:

She does not turn the pages. She has been looking at the same page for a long time.

"… This book was my mother's. My mother knew Latin. I am still learning.

What is written on this page is … Memento mori. It means 'remember death.' A fitting phrase for a physician. It is also a phrase my mother left behind."

Check: Wisdom or an Interpretation trait. On a success, Affinity +1. On a great success, learns one Portuguese word (if used in a later conversation: +1).

#Stage 3 Event — "The Cross"

Unlock: Affinity 6 + the stage at which Minako's Christian secret is revealed.

Scene: Minako calls the PC to her room. She closes the door and draws a small wooden cross necklace from inside her kimono.

Content:

"I show you this. I believe you will not report me for seeing it.

This was my mother's. My mother wore this at her neck when she burned to death.

I wore this and survived. That is my guilt — and my duty as well.

I ask you: how do you see me?"

Check: Bearing or Negotiation. On a success: Stage 3 + Affinity +2. On a critical failure: she hides the necklace and leaves; Affinity -3.

#Stage 4 Event — "A Night Together"

Unlock: Affinity 8.

Scene: Minako asks the PC, "There is too much work tonight for me to manage alone."

Content:

They stay up through the night in the infirmary. She cleans Western surgical instruments; the PC sits beside her, reading or talking.

Near dawn, she says:

"I will not marry. I will not become a member of any clan. Such things — I cannot bear them.

But… if you are willing, I would like to spend a few more nights like this together. That is all I can give you."

Check: None.

  • Accept: Stage 4. Affinity +2. Minako thereafter often spends nights with the PC (whether for medical care or conversation).
  • Refuse: Affinity -1. Minako nods as if she understands and returns to her usual manner. Difficult to retry.

#Stage 5 — Union

Conditions to reach Affinity 10:

  • After Stage 4, the PC protects Minako when her Christian identity is in danger of exposure
  • Chooses to accompany Minako at the ending branch
  • Maintains the promise of "being together"

Upon union:

  • Companionship without marriage. The same house, the same night.
  • Whether to have children is Minako's own choice (she generally does not want to — she does not wish to perpetuate her bloodline).
  • The domain residents call this relationship "husband and wife," but Minako neither corrects nor affirms it.

#Minako's Unique Ending — "Mother's Book"

Minako's Latin medical text — Padre Lorenzo holds part of it. When the PC reaches Affinity 10:

  • Lorenzo delivers the remaining portion of the book to the two of them.
  • The complete book becomes a comparative study of the 5 Hells and the Christian Hell.
  • Minako calls this book "ours" — her "ours" includes both her mother and the PC.

#Tragedy Branch — "The Flame of the Forbidden Faith"

  • Ending A (Return): The ban on Christianity in the core-book world becomes a real threat. Minako may choose to go into hiding upon returning. She parts from the PC but exchanges letters occasionally.
  • Minako's death: She sacrifices herself while treating the seriously wounded during Chapter 5's decisive battle. At Affinity 8+, PC's Three Ways and Six Hearts 慈 +3.
  • Refusal of forced apostasy: External pressure demands she renounce Christianity. Minako chooses death. Whether the PC can intervene determines the branch.

#Safety Guidelines

  • The depiction of Christian persecution is historical fact, but emotionally heavy. Table must agree in advance.
  • Minako's "refusal of marriage" comes from her wounds, not from a declaration of anti-marriage ideology. Do not distort this nuance.

#GM Notes

  • Maintain the cold surface: Keep Minako's physician's restraint even during romance. Her love shows in small actions (she is the first to notice the PC's wound).
  • Latin and Portuguese as a tool: Her Foreign Language is an emotional device. When she starts speaking Portuguese to the PC, it is a sign her feelings are deepening.
  • Companionship without marriage: This ending is unconventional even for the Sengoku era — which gives it more weight. Depict the domain residents' whispers and gradual acceptance.

#5. Uta — Drifted Half-Blood

Uta, mixed-heritage drifter between two worlds, complete upper body from head to waist, travel cloak and small keepsake at the collar, looking toward an unseen road, two grave.

#Scent — Daughter of Two Worlds

Uta is nineteen. She is the product of an earlier drift — her father was a drifter from the core-book world, her mother a humanoid entity of the Spirit Realm (a completed Transformation subject). She does not belong to the Kagamiyama Domain. In Chapter 4 the PCs encounter her at the border of the Screaming Hell and Shonetsu.

Her eyes are one gray, one gray-green. Her skin is pale. She speaks little, and neither the Spirit Realm's language nor human language is fully hers. A person who belongs completely to neither world.

#Basic Information

  • Age: 19
  • Status: former drifted half-blood, unaffiliated
  • Preferred Heart: 眞 · 魔
  • Rejected Heart: 忠 (one who was betrayed — her father's clan abandoned her)
  • Base Difficulty: 6
  • Starting Affinity: 0 (encounter begins from Chapter 4)
  • In-Session Maximum Stage: 5

#Encounter Conditions

Uta can only be encountered from mid-Chapter 4 onward. She lives alone in a hut at the border of the Scorching Heat Hell. Encounter conditions:

  • Chapter 4, Act 2 or later
  • One of the PCs discovers traces of the earlier drift (Ayaka's information, etc.)
  • Approach to Uta's hut (random encounter or specific quest)

#Affinity Stage Attitude Changes

AffinityAttitude
0~2Alert. Draws bow. Does not speak
3~5Brief conversation. Reveals her name
6~7Lets the PC inside the hut. Speaks of her parents
8~9"Will you come with me?" — requests companionship
10Proposes Transformation or companion marriage

#Affinity Changes — Uta Specific

#Rise Factors

ActionIncrease
Does not treat her as an "outsider"+1
Listens to her parents' story+2
Uses a few words of the Spirit Realm's language+1
Accompanies negotiations with a yoma partner+1
Tells the truth+1 (眞 alignment)

#Fall Factors

ActionDecrease
Draws a distinction like "you're human in the end"-2
Boasts about core-book clan lineage (flaunting 忠)-2
Attempts to forcibly incorporate her into the domain-3
Belittles her mother's yoma nature-3

#Stage 2 Event — "Parents' Graves"

Unlock: Affinity 4.

Scene: Uta guides the PC to two graves behind the hut. One is human-style; one is Spirit Realm-style.

Content:

"My father was human, and my mother was not.

My father wanted to return to the domain, and my mother wanted to stay here.

Neither of them got what they wanted. Both of them were buried here.

I am their daughter. I do not choose one of them over the other. I am both."

Check: Bearing. On a success, enters Stage 2 + Affinity +2.

#Stage 3 Event — "The Song of the Half-Blood"

Unlock: Affinity 6.

Scene: Uta sings inside the hut, playing an old instrument (a Spirit Realm variant of a koto or biwa).

Content:

The song's lyrics are half human words and half Spirit Realm syllables. A song her mother taught her.

"I am the only one who completed this song. And the only one who can teach it.

… Shall I teach it to you? If one more person knows this song, it will not die."

Check: Music or Foreign Language. On a great success, the PC learns the Song of the Half-Blood — special effect in combat (calming Spirit Realm entities +1, restoring Heart of human entities +1).

#Stage 4 Event — "The Choice of Two Worlds"

Unlock: Affinity 8.

Scene: Uta asks the PC about choices from her own past.

Content:

"Do you wish to return to the domain? Or to stay here?

My mother said that returning to the domain means ceasing to be human, and my father said that staying here means ceasing to be human.

Both of them were right.

What I want to know is — where do you wish to place me? In your domain? In this hut? Or… beside you, wherever that may be?"

Check: None. The PC's response decides.

  • Accept "beside you": Stage 4. Affinity +2. Uta accepts becoming the PC's companion.
  • Propose "to the domain": Affinity -1. Uta follows but cannot be incorporated.
  • Propose "stay in the hut": Affinity -2. Uta is hurt.

#Stage 5 — Union

Conditions to reach Affinity 10:

  • After Stage 4, participates with Uta in Chapter 5's decisive battle
  • The PC accepts Uta's half-blood nature at the ending
  • Chooses Transformation or companionship

Two paths at union:

#5a. Human Union (Companionship)

  • Uta participates in the human-side ending as the PC's companion.
  • Upon returning to the core-book world, Uta's half-blood nature receives yoma suspicion in the core-book world. She lives in concealment.
  • If children are born, they are 1/4 yoma.

#5b. Transformation Union

  • The PC follows Uta's path into half-Transformation. Part of the PC becomes yoma.
  • This confirms Ending C (Transformation).
  • The two remain in the Spirit Realm as successors to the hut.

#Uta's Unique Ending — "The Song of the Half-Blood Does Not Die"

When Affinity 10 is reached:

  • Only Uta and the PC together can perform the "Song of the Half-Blood" in full.
  • After growing old while singing this song, they pass it down to any children.
  • If Ending A is chosen, this song becomes the sole artifact of Spirit Realm culture that remains in the core-book world.

#Tragedy Branch — "The Last of the Abandoned"

  • If the Chapter 4 encounter fails, Uta does not appear.
  • If they met but parted with Affinity below 5, Uta remains in eternal solitude. By the ending she has quietly taken her own life or completed her Transformation.
  • If the PC desecrates Uta's parents' graves or tries to forcibly incorporate her into a clan: Uta becomes hostile. She can appear as an enemy in Chapter 5.

#Safety Guidelines

  • The half-blood and inter-species theme is connected to histories of discrimination. Avoid real-world discriminatory language; handle it in a fantasy context.
  • The question of "is she human or not" belongs to Uta herself. The PC cannot answer it.
  • Transformation union involves a physical change to the PC. Player's prior consent required.

#GM Notes

  • Details of two worlds: Mix traces of both cultures into Uta's lines, actions, and habits. Do not tilt toward either side.
  • Abundance of silence: A low-speaking NPC. Fill the silences with description.
  • The sanctity of the hut: Uta's space is one of the only sanctuaries in Chapter 4. Do not taint it with scenes of violence.

"My father said love was a luxury. But since this domain fell, I have learned that luxury is the one thing we possess. People take hold of today's hand from a place where they may die tomorrow. If that is luxury, then this luxury defends my domain." — Kamijo Akihisa, diary four months into the drift.
