English edition v1.3.3

#12 Companions·Automata

Contents

Non-NPC companions owned·accompanying a PC. The core squad convention is not applied — 1 per 1 slot, personal support. A mix of Japanese·Western styles such as shikigami·music-box automata. The difference from the 1st-expansion spirit (靈) companions (02-npc/): this section is a PC's possessions·tools, the 1st is an independent intelligence.

#§ Companion·Automaton Operation Procedure

  • Classification: handled as a single minion-grade NPC 1 body (applies the core 06-units minion convention).
  • Action: 1 automatic action right after the PC's action (same round). A complex action (accompanied by a detailed order) is directed at the cost of the PC's 1 action.
  • Values: Energy·Wounds are the minion-grade standard (Energy 5 / Wounds 1) default values. For item-by-item detailed values, the relevant table takes priority.
  • Loss: applies the squad-collapse rule — Wounds 0 = permanent loss or recovery period (recovery period 1 session or more, some automata cannot be repaired).
  • Check: a companion's own check applies the core 03-09 non-combat check. Tracking·perception·carrying, etc.
  • Specified in this §14 (00-05): See 00-05 §14 mapping of undefined concepts to core reuse.

#§ Scent — Another Soul Kept at One's Side

A swordsman does not walk alone. A bird on the shoulder, a dog beside the foot, a shikigami in the bosom. All travel the same road together with a different breath.

#§ Usage Conventions

  • Ownership slot: 1 companion = 1 gear slot (but birds·small shikigami are 3 per 1 slot).
  • PC action priority: a companion's action is automatic after the PC's action (a simple order). A complex action consumes the PC's 1 action.
  • Death·disbanding: at companion Energy 0, death or disbanding. Shikigami·automata can be re-summoned·re-made, ordinary animals die permanently.
  • Difference from the 1st-expansion spirit (靈): this section is tools·possessions. A 1st-expansion spirit is an independent intelligence (capable of dialogue·its own will with the PC). If a PC already holds a 1st-expansion spirit, this section's companions are supplementary.

#§ Design Perspective

  • Distribution of the 12 companions: ordinary animals 4 / shikigami 3 / automata 3 / foreign 2.
  • School·profession linkage: shikigami need an onmyoji·Sorcery License. The golem needs Kabbalah scholarship. Karakuri can be used by ordinary PCs too.
  • Foreign representation: Camila (Arab), music box (Nanban), golem (Jewish), servant bird (Nanban) — strengthens this expansion's foreign-school identity.
  • Combat vs non-combat: a balance of combat use (hunting hawk·hunting dog·Shikigami Same·golem) vs non-combat use (tea-ceremony doll·music box·bird shikigami).

"One hawk doubles one person's field of view. The music of one doll calms one listener's heart."
