#Dan 7 — Those Whose Names Carry Across One Region

Dan 7 Use Standard. Dan 7 is an odd-numbered dan — the first advanced class talents (Dan 7 list) open (cumulative: total attribute bonuses +6, 15 skill points, 9 talents[gaijin 10, Commoner 8], 3 licenses, 1 Master). Masterworks and Divine Treasures first appear (Master[4 points] prerequisite — Dan 7 is the lower bound). Masterworks and Divine Treasures follow the rules in co-07-02, co-07-03, and fc05-04-01.


#Scent — The Peak of One Region

Dan 7 is people whose names carry across one region. They are not yet realm-scale, but their names have weight in one land. Having gained their first advanced talent, their one move can no longer be imitated.

From this dan onward, the objects in their hands also change — a sword inherited through a house, a mirror recovered from a ruined temple, a tea bowl fired from clay across the sea. Masterworks and Divine Treasures first appear, and they are not simple bonuses but the character's story itself.

#Law — Character Distribution in This Chapter

The five standard/dual-class NPCs were drawn one each from five role groups (Front Zone / defense, ranged / bombardment, support / healing, mobility / assassination, control / terrain). Their origins were chosen from five different entries among the ten regions of fc09, and each has a regional-name byname ("X of Y") (standard in the regional cross-reference table).

The roles, purposes, role groups, and regions of the five standard/dual-class NPCs do not overlap. The two dual builds (Gunsmith and Dharma Music) are combinations first shown in this volume. The Commoner slot (No. 6) is a separate axis (ex1-99-06).


#1. Shibata Unsai (柴田雲斎) — Dan 7 Samurai

Shibata Unsai, seventh-dan samurai, complete upper body from head to waist, sword held in formal readiness, regional authority suggested by a single banner shape left blank.

The house sword does not know how to stop in his hand.

The head of a Kanto warrior house. To avenge his destroyed house, he took up the heirloom blade Unryumaru. His sword name carries across one region, but the sword's curse prevents him from stopping.

Masterwork "Unryumaru(雲龍丸)" [co-07-02 masterwork rules / fc05-04-01 ownership bond · narrow Canon] — Ownership Condition: inheritance through Shibata bloodline (only the head-of-house heir can use it fully). Masterwork Technique: Cloud Dragon Flash[form] (Swordsmanship Master(4 points) prerequisite — satisfied at Dan 7). Curse[aptitude]: cannot voluntarily stop during battle (no retreat or surrender). Cost: at the end of each battle, pressure toward Demon in Three Ways and Six Hearts. This is not a simple bonus, but a blade bound to revenge.

  • Operation. Front Zone anchor (Immovable Formation), Duel Declaration (1:1 challenge), Musou (Dan 7 advanced — area), Swordsmanship Master (offense-defense unity). Masterwork Unryumaru (Cloud Dragon Flash, Master prerequisite). Non-combat: regional warrior-house military affairs and retainer command. Weakness: bound by the masterwork's curse (no retreat) and revenge — a blade that cannot stop.
  • Backstory. Someone who took up the heirloom blade at the end of a destroyed house. It is unclear whether the sword grips him or he grips the sword.
  • Relationship Hook. If the target of his revenge becomes entangled with the PCs, he is an adversary. Unryumaru's curse blocks reconciliation.
  • PC Conversion. Samurai Dan 1→7. Priority: Courage axis / Swordsmanship Master / 3 licenses / Dan 5 revenge branch / Dan 7 Musou. The masterwork technique is used after Dan 7 (Master).

#2. Joao "Teppo Jubei" (鉄砲十兵衛) — Dan 7 Gaijin + Artisan Dual Build

Joao Teppou Jubei, foreign gunsmith-warrior, complete upper body from head to waist, matchlock held carefully across the body, Japanese work apron over foreign details, no smoke.

Gun and bullet alike: he makes them himself and fires them himself.

A marksman from across the sea who settled among the Saika teppo group in Kii. He shoots guns, makes them, and repairs them. The regional peak of teppo craft — the path of the Gunsmith (銃匠), who "makes both gun and bullet." The village calls him "Teppo Jubei."

Self-Made Masterwork Teppo "Saikamaru(雑賀丸)" [co-07-02 masterwork rules · narrow Canon] — Ownership Condition: because the Gunsmith himself made it, only he handles it fully (self-made). Masterwork Technique: Three-Stage Pierce[form] (Archery Master(4 points) prerequisite). Cost: in rain or underwater, the gunpowder dies and becomes powerless (same as the gaijin weakness). No curse — a gun trained to the hand that made it.

  • Dual Build. Primary gaijin Dan 7 / secondary artisan (declared at Dan 3). Prerequisites: Physique +1 · Wisdom +2 · Disable Licensed (artisan prerequisite: Physique+1, Wisdom+1, Disable trained+). Borrowed talent: 1 general slot is replaced with the artisan Dan 3 talent Trap Installation. Secondary Renown Title, secondary Dan 1 automatic, and Dan 7+ are not gained. Core Zone entry follows the primary gaijin (forced Breakthrough; teppo cannot be used in the Core Zone). Dan 10 = Gunsmith (銃匠).
  • Operation. Teppo sniping (Foreign Gunpowder — [Pierce all], fixed 11), Rapid Fire, Repeating Gun, Cannon (Dan 7 advanced), self-made masterwork (Three-Stage Pierce, Master prerequisite), teppo crafting and improvised traps (secondary artisan). Non-combat: teppo crafting, repair, interpreting, foreign knowledge. Weakness: powerless in rain or underwater.
  • Backstory. The making hand and the shooting hand belong to one person. That is why his gun is his alone.
  • Relationship Hook. Provides the PCs with teppo, bullets, and firepower (ally). Competes in technique with Yazo the Gunsmithing Craftsman (Dan 5).
  • PC Conversion. Gaijin Dan 1→7, declare secondary artisan at Dan 3. Why two paths: when the shooter learns how to make them, the guns do not run dry. Dan 10 = Gunsmith.

#3. Gyonen (暁念) — Dan 7 Pure Land Monk + Entertainer Dual Build

Gyonen, Pure Land monk-entertainer dual build, complete upper body from head to waist, prayer beads and blank fan, gentle performer-monk expression.

Sutra and song come from one mouth and become Amida's song.

A preacher of a Hokuriku Ikko dojo. Sutra and song come from one mouth and are known as "Amida's song (Dharma Music)." As the axis of one regional faith community, he binds people through nembutsu and supports morale through song.

  • PC Conversion. Pure Land monk Dan 1→7, declare secondary entertainer at Dan 3. Why two paths: song opens hearts that sutra alone cannot reach. Dan 10 = Dharma Music.

#4. Kuro of Izumo (出雲の九郎) — Dan 7 Shinobi

Kuro of Izumo, seventh-dan shinobi, complete upper body from head to waist, dark travel cloak, short blade and cord, face mostly white and unreadable.

Every shadow in Izumo belongs to Kuro.

The head of a local intelligence zappa in Izumo, Sanyo-Sanin. He has laid the path of shadows across one region. He is not a popular-image ninja, but the real form of a rogue who holds local intelligence — people say there is no information in this land he does not know.

  • Backstory. The hand that holds one region's shadows. It is not popular-image illusion magic, but a net of information and people.
  • Relationship Hook. Buys and sells information, trading or clashing with the PCs (informant). Connected to Kurosuke (Dan 2) and Jingo (Dan 4) through the world of shadows.
  • PC Conversion. Shinobi Dan 1→7. Priority: Finesse axis / Ninjutsu Master / 3 licenses / Dan 7 Vanish. Core Zone freedom is automatic at Dan 1.

#5. Dosetsu of Oku (奥の道雪) — Dan 7 Feng Shui Master

Dosetsu of Oku, seventh-dan fengshui master, complete upper body from head to waist, travel staff and blank geomancy board, mountain wind and terrain implied by spare strokes.

A mirror recovered from a ruined temple reflects the power of the land.

A leyline practitioner from the Ou borderlands. He acquired the Divine Treasure "Mirror of Leylines" from a ruined temple and uses the power of the land. He is a regional peak of magic who creates zones and awakens leylines — but the mirror drinks him as much as the land's power.

Divine Treasure "Mirror of Leylines(靈脈の鏡)" [co-07-03 Divine Treasure rules · narrow Canon] — Acquisition: Spirit Realm relic excavated from a ruined temple. Ownership Conditions: Barrier Master(4 points) + faith match (Onmyodo origin -> Way of Mystery, Truth). Devotion Technique: Open Leylines[form] (usable when aligned with Way of Mystery). Blessing[aptitude]: automatically activates the leyline in your barrier zone. Curse[aptitude]: at the end of each battle, Wounds -1 (the leyline drinks the practitioner). If Heart Shift occurs (Three Ways and Six Hearts change), the devotion technique may become unusable.

  • Operation. Zone Domination manipulation (Twist Leyline), Zone Creation (Dan 7 advanced), Barrier Master (Guardian Field), Divine Treasure (leyline activation and Open Leylines, Master + Way of Mystery prerequisite). Non-combat: feng shui, leylines, barrier advice, fortune. Core Zone entry is forced Breakthrough. Weakness: Divine Treasure curse (Wounds -1 after battle), cannot stay in one place.
  • Backstory. Someone who borrows the land's power. The more the mirror reflects, the more the mirror drinks him.
  • Relationship Hook. Teaches a PC practitioner leylines, barriers, and Divine Treasures (mentor). A higher state of Genan (Dan 3).
  • PC Conversion. Feng shui master Dan 1→7. Priority: Wisdom axis / Barrier Master / 3 licenses / Dan 7 Zone Creation. The Divine Treasure devotion technique is available after Dan 7 (Master + Way of Mystery).

#6. Tosan of Sagi Village (沙器村の土山) — Dan 7 Commoner · Livelihood:Pottery (Master Artisan)

Tea people say one of his tea bowls is worth a castle.

A potter (陶工) from across the sea. In a Kyushu kiln, he reached the level of Master Artisan (名匠). Daimyo and tea people compete for his tea bowls — people say "one tea bowl is worth a castle." His name carries beyond one region.

  • Operation. Non-combat — pottery production (Livelihood:Pottery Master Artisan +3 — a name carrying beyond one region, cannot be used for battlefield checks), sense for clay and water (Perception), trade (Negotiation). Local figure and Master Artisan: a potter from across the sea; daimyo and tea people compete for his tea bowls. His tea bowls are masterwork candidates — connects to fc05 Meitoki and tea culture. On the battlefield, he is an untrained Commoner -> treated as rabble (雜) (Wounds 0, instant death).
  • Backstory. A hand brought across the sea. People say the clay fired by that hand changed the tea gatherings of an era. (Master Artisan = someone whose name carries beyond one region, one or two in a lifetime.)
  • Relationship Hook. PCs, daimyo, and tea people become entangled over his tea bowl (local figure). Connected to the tea gatherings of Sotoku the Magnate (Dan 5).
  • PC Conversion. Commoners cannot be used as PCs. To move him into play, rebuild him as a main-text artisan (potter) or similar.

#Closing Dan Note — Peaks of One Region

  • Sword and Mirror. Unsai's (avenging head of house) Unryumaru and Dosetsu's (leyline practitioner) mirror are both objects that drink the person — together, they show how masterworks and Divine Treasures become "axes of story."
  • Gun and Clay. Jubei (teppo self-sufficiency) and Tosan (potter) are both peaks of "the making hand" — one hand shapes guns, the other shapes tea bowls.
  • Shadow and Dojo. Kuro (intelligence) and Gyonen (Ikko dojo) each hold a region's darkness and faith — when information and popular sentiment clash in one domain, shadows can shake the dojo.
