#Props — The Things Carried Onstage
Contents
This document belongs to front. All props below are a Variant (opt-in) Data Catalog — valid only when the table adopts them. Stage-prop modifiers work within the prop-aid +1 cap of
02, and do not stack with one another (see the Note below).
#Data — Meibutsu (名物) and Ordinary Tools
Tools come in two grains. An ordinary tool merely serves to set the stage and grants no bonus to a check (you are in trouble without it, but having it does not make you excel). Only a meibutsu (名物) — a single named piece — touches a performance check. A meibutsu carries the masterwork-and-sacred-object thinking of fc05 over to objects of art, is usually reckoned in gold, and holds a provenance and an ownership history.
| Prop | Kanji | Class | Effect (if adopted) | Value (detailed economy) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| meibutsu biwa | 名物 琵琶 | instrument | Performance check +1. At a requiem / summoning (02) seat, an extra +1 against spirit targets only | 8~20 gold |
| seven-color fan | 七色扇 | dance prop | +1 to a dance performance check (shirabyoshi, kabuki, etc.) | 30 silver ~ 5 gold |
| noh mask | 能面 | mask | Staging for noh performance. The hannyamen (般若面) gives +1 to requiem / summoning, but a spiritual accident widens on a Fumble | 20 silver ~ 6 gold |
| meibutsu tea utensil | 名物 茶器 | tea ware | At a tea ceremony seat, +1~2 to [Negotiation] / social checks, and a daimyo's favor | 10~30 gold |
| fine incense & censer | 名香·香爐 | incense ware | +1 to a performance at a kodo seat, and aid in perceiving spiritual presences (GM's discretion) | 40 silver ~ 8 gold |
| kabukimono costume | 傾奇者 衣装 | dress | First-impression / Bearing staging +1. But it stands out, so it works opposite to [Disguise] | 20~80 silver |
| show banners & curtains | 幟·幕 | stage installation | Raises a street performance one step (target number -1, 1 time per seat) | 50 copper ~ 20 silver |
| drum & flute (ensemble gear) | 鼓·笛 | instrument | When two or more play together, scale +1 step for the stage (no effect alone) | 5~30 silver |
Self-defense gear is separate. The kaiken (concealed dagger) and hankyu (short bow) an entertainer keeps close are recommended gear for the Entertainer class and canonical entries in
co-07. This issue does not restate those numbers — for self-defense onstage, use that document as is.

#Note — A Short Guide for the GM
1. Bonus cap. Take prop modifiers only within the prop +1 cap of 02. Even carrying a fan and a costume together, the performance-check modifier is capped at +1 (only modifiers on a different axis stack separately, such as the tea utensil's +1 at the different field of a tea ceremony, or the extra +1 against spirit targets at a requiem seat). This is to prevent builds that pile up numbers through objects.
2. Using them as rewards. A meibutsu is a rare jackpot atop the loose-change economy (co-08-07). The Critical Hit special effect of 02 (a patronage offer), a gift granted before a daimyo, a meibutsu bestowed before the Lord of the Realm — an entertainer's meibutsu suits coming to hand this way rather than through money.
3. Spirit Realm hook. A meibutsu carries a story. A meibutsu biwa that has sounded for a hundred years begins to play the Heike on its own (the threshold of the tsukumogami), a hannyamen reflects the grudge of the one who wears it, and daimyo draw their swords over a single meibutsu tea utensil — a single object becomes a whole scenario.
4. Even without an entertainer. These props are not exclusive to the Entertainer class. A general who has mastered Bearing sounds out an enemy commander's heart with a meibutsu tea utensil at a tea ceremony, and a spy draws gazes with a kabukimono costume — they are used offstage as well.
#Scent — One Sentence
"An object takes on a story the moment it earns a name — and in an entertainer's hands, that story weeps once more."
