#Scent — This Palm-Sized Land
Open the map, and the domain is palm-sized. Fold it, and it fits in a pocket.
From north to south is less than half a day. Even a child's pace takes only half a day. In the old days, that isolation was a blessing. Sengoku's chaos could not reach this far. The Kamijo family, kokujin local lords, protected it for 3 generations not because of valor, but because no one looked closely at them.
Now it is different. This smallness is the size of a prison. Within the Barrier, you can walk from end to end in half a day. Stand at that end, and if you stretch out your hand, you can touch the Barrier. Do not touch it, the onmyoji says. If the Barrier remembers human warmth, the area on that side grows thin.
800 people live on this palm. What happens at the eastern edge can be known at the western edge within an hour. Distance cannot be hidden. Secrets cannot be hidden. Death cannot be hidden.
When the morning mist clears, the map appears. One fortress, one shrine, one well, one smithy, five pieces of farmland, and 120 village houses. That is all. All of it is what we must protect.
#Law — Overall Domain Structure
#Basic Dimensions
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Domain area | about 2 ri × 2 ri (real-world 4km × 4km) |
| Barrier radius (spherical) | about 1 ri (2km) — from domain center |
| Barrier height | about 500 ken (900m) — dome apex |
| Ground elevation difference | high north, low south — about 80 ken (140m) difference |
| Resident living area | domain center 0.7 ri × 0.7 ri (1.4km square) |
| Farmland area | about 30% of domain area |
#Directions And Terrain
- North: mountain(Kagamiyama branch ridge). Outside the Barrier is the binding forest of Black Rope Hell.
- East: stream and reservoir. Outside the Barrier is the boiling lake of Screaming Hell.
- South: connected to an old official road(官道). Outside the Barrier is the blood-bleeding wilderness of Reviving Hell.
- West: cliff and abandoned quarry. Outside the Barrier is unclear boundary, mist. (unknown in the current session)
The west is unlocked for exploration after Chapter 3. Expeditions in Chapters 1~2 are limited to the 3 directions of north, east, and south.
#6 Zone Details
The domain interior is divided into 6 major zones. Each zone is treated as a single zone under the Zone Tactics rules. If combat occurs, apply that zone's terrain traits.
#1. Fortress (城砦) — Main Hall
Location: northern hill of the domain, lower south slope of Kagamiyama
Scale: main building 1, annex buildings 3, inner courtyard 1
Personnel: lord's family 7 + retainers 20 + servants 15 (total 42)
Materials: stone, wood, earthen walls
The Kamijo family's residence and the heart of domain administration. A 3rd-generation building; the last expansion during his father's life was 15 years ago. Too small to be a Sengoku castle, too heavily armed to be a residence.
- Inner courtyard (内庭): a gravel courtyard where the morning meeting is held every day. One old pine stands at the center.
- Main room (主室): Lord Akihisa's office. His father's scrolls are stored here.
- Guest hall (客殿): for receiving outside guests. Since the drift, almost always empty. Can also be used as a temporary shelter.
- Watchtower (櫓): a 3-story watchtower attached to the main building. It overlooks the whole Barrier. See 01-04 Facilities.
GM operation: Fortress scenes suit political and private scenes. Duel and training scenes can also happen in the inner courtyard.
#2. Shrine (神社) — Center Of The Barrier
Location: northeastern forest of the domain, 20 minutes on foot from the fortress
Scale: main sanctuary 1, worship hall 1, shrine office 1, ritual implement storehouse 1
Personnel: onmyoji Hoshino Gensho + shrine maidens 2 + chief priest(神主)1 + laborers 3 (total 7)
Materials: fine hinoki, lacquerware, spirit stones
The physical anchor point of the domain Barrier. The place where Hoshino Gensho performs Barrier maintenance rites. A core-fusion altar can be installed beneath the main sanctuary(01-05 Upgrades).
- Main sanctuary (本殿): where the sacred body(神體) is enshrined. Entry forbidden to ordinary people. Barrier maintenance rites are performed here.
- Worship hall (拝殿): for ordinary worshippers. Residents come here every morning. Group prayer can grant a morale +1 bonus(see 01-06).
- Shrine office (社務所): the onmyoji's office and lodging. Gensho's private space.
- Ritual implement storehouse (祭器庫): stores ritual tools. Can also be used as core storage.
GM operation: Barrier check scenes, onmyoji RP scenes, major ritual scenes. End Sunday night sessions here.
#3. Village (村) — Central Settlement
Location: middle of the domain, crossing point south of the shrine and south of the fortress
Scale: about 120 houses, central square 1, many alleys
Personnel: about 480 residents (60% of the domain's total population 800)
Materials: thatch, wood, straw roofs
The heart of Kagamiyama. The houses spread radially toward the central square, with the well at the center.
- Central square: the yard with the well. Domain gatherings, festivals, and notices happen here. Group event space.
- Nagaya street: row houses for artisan and merchant families.
- Farmer residential quarter: village edge. The side closest to the fields.
- Community facilities: clinic(醫院), granary, mill. See 01-04 Facilities.
GM operation: default stage for resident interaction scenes. Most everyday scenes. Present resident morale through this zone's sounds and smells.
#4. Well (井戶) — Heart Of The Central Square
Location: middle of the village central square
Scale: diameter 1 ken(1.8m), depth 12 ken(22m)
Personnel: well attendants 2 (weekly rotation), users 80/day
Materials: stone and wood (bucket)
The domain's only drinking water source. One well supplies water for 800 people. It was so before the drift, and it remains so after the drift.
- Water quality: clear. No Spirit Realm aura dwells in it — the onmyoji claims the earth vein pierces beyond the Barrier.
- A depth of 12 ken is strangely deep. They say it might go deeper if dug further.
- Prayer water: the first bucket drawn every morning for the shrine. Used as purification water.
GM presentation points:
- If the well dries up, the domain dies. That fact alone creates tension.
- The wellside is where information moves fastest. Default background for resident conversation scenes.
- Event where yoma intrude into the well → chain with a Barrier crisis. See 01-04.
#5. Smithy (鍛冶場) — Heart Of Fire
Location: western edge of the domain, between village and fields
Scale: furnaces 2, workshop 1, storehouse 1, lodging 1
Personnel: master Nohachi(67 years old) + son Kansuke(28 years old) + apprentices 3 (total 5)
Materials: firebrick, cast iron, charcoal
The only artisan facility responsible for the domain's weapons and farming tools. Hammering can be heard from every morning until night. If that sound stops, something is wrong.
- Main output: yari(spears), uchigatana(swords), farming tools, kettles, nails.
- Monthly production: about 4 weapons, about 10 farming tools.
- Upgrades: 01-05 Smithy 1~3 stages — unlocks heavy armor and masterwork weapons.
GM presentation points:
- Rhythm of hammering = pulse of the domain.
- Loss of the smithy is a critical hit. Weapon supply stops + domain morale -2.
- Master Nohachi's son Kansuke is a strong candidate among squad replenishment reserves.
#6. Fields (田畑) — The Domain's Stomach
Location: southern plain of the domain, 5~15 minutes on foot from the village
Scale: five pieces (large paddies 3, dry fields 2), total about 120 cho
Personnel: farmers 380 (half the domain population)
Materials: levees and irrigation channels (connected to the well and Barrier earth vein)
The basis of the domain's food self-sufficiency. Annual income of 5,000 koku comes from here. After the drift, the soil began to change subtly — rice grains have become slightly darker than usual, and yield has dropped by 10%.
- 3 paddy pieces: north, central, and south paddies. Water is irrigated from the stream northeast of the Barrier.
- 2 dry field pieces: vegetable cultivation and silver mining(silver is a specialty of the old domain).
- Crops other than rice: buckwheat, beans, sweet potatoes, daikon, green onions.
- Livestock: 6 cattle, 60 chickens. 3 horses are in the fortress(for the lord and retainers).
GM presentation points:
- Field events connect to weekly supply checks. A poor harvest gives morale -2.
- The field edge is the Barrier boundary line. Barrier Boundary Events can trigger there.
- Because of the Spirit Realm's influence, crops slowly changing is a long-term tension element.
#Spirit Realm Boundary — Scenery In 3 Directions
Outside the Barrier is no longer Japan. Three landscapes each connect to a different hell. (The west can be explored after Chapter 3, through the mist.)
#Northern Boundary — Black Rope(黑繩) Forest
Scenery: black trees begin growing from 50 ken outside the Barrier.
The trees use **iron chains** as bones. When wind blows, chains scrape together.
Sound: metal scraping. Constantly. Heard even in daytime.
Smell: rusty blood. Smell it long enough and the tip of the tongue tastes rust.
Visibility: impossible beyond 30 ken inside the forest. Distance twists beyond comprehension.
First yoma met: black slave(Minion), chain serpent(Veteran) — main stage of Chapter 2
#Eastern Boundary — Screaming(叫喚) Lake
Scenery: beyond 100 ken of flat ground outside the Barrier, a vast boiling lake.
The water is red and always boiling. Steam flows west.
Sound: boiling water + occasional human screams.
(the screams belong to an old fishing village sunk at the lake bottom)
Smell: boiling blood. Salt. Burned flesh.
Visibility: by day, up to half a ri across the lake. At night, steam blocks even 50 ken.
First yoma met: drowned ghost(Minion), lake slave(Veteran), giant crab yoma(Elite) — main stage of Chapter 3
#Southern Boundary — Reviving(等活) Wilderness
Scenery: a dry plain stretching endlessly beyond the Barrier. No grass, only bloodstains.
Old prison ladders stand here and there — once you lose, they spit earth.
Sound: wind. Sometimes distant drums (from nowhere identifiable).
Smell: old blood. Dust.
Visibility: open plain, visible far away. However, **the horizon curves upward**.
First yoma met: reviving oni(Minion), eternal sick one(Veteran), repeating killer(Elite) — main stage of Chapter 1
#Western Boundary — Realm Of Mist
Scenery: unlocked after Chapter 3. Beyond the cliff is a **boundary blocked by mist**.
A **faint gate** casts a shadow in the mist. Distance unknown.
Sound: none. Sound is absorbed.
Smell: none. Smell is also absorbed.
Visibility: 10 ken or less.
First yoma met: Scorching Heat yoma (Chapter 4), Mugen contact NPC (Chapter 5).
#Defense Structure — 3-Layer Defense Line
Domain defense has 3 layers, from inside to outside.
#1st Layer — Barrier (Outermost)
- Spherical Barrier covering the whole domain.
- See 01-02 for the Barrier HP 100 system.
- Physically invisible, but when you approach the Barrier line, you can see a faint blue tremor.
- Touching the Barrier directly numbs the hand + Energy -1 (per contact time).
#2nd Layer — Gates And Fence (Middle)
A physical defense line built so that the domain center is not exposed immediately even if the Barrier breaks.
| Direction | Structure | State | Defense |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Gate | stone/wood composite, 3 ken wide | good | guards 2 daytime, 3 nighttime |
| East Gate | wood/plank, 3 ken wide | middling (needs repair) | guards 2 daytime, 2 nighttime |
| South Gate | stone/wood composite, 4 ken wide | good | guards 3 daytime, 3 nighttime |
| Fence | wooden fence, height 2 ken | good (old) | patrol 1 time/2 hours |
There is no west gate. The western cliff is a natural barrier.
#3rd Layer — Fortress And Village Surroundings (Inner)
The final defense line of the domain center. The fortress functions as a small stronghold.
- Stone wall around fortress exterior(height 2 ken, thickness 1 ken)
- Emergency bell in fortress inner courtyard — if rung, whole-domain alarm
- Area around the well in the village center serves as final shelter
- See Shelter Facility.
#3-Layer Breach Scenario
If the Barrier(1st layer) → gates/fence(2nd layer) → fortress surroundings(3rd layer) are breached in that order, it becomes the domain-collapse ending. This can occur only at the climax.
- 1st layer collapse: Barrier HP 0.
- 2nd layer breach: one of the north, east, or south gates falls.
- 3rd layer breach: invasion of the fortress inner courtyard.
At each stage, domain morale -3 and transition into a state where Barrier HP cannot be restored.

#Weekly Movement Rules (Inside The Domain)
Movement inside the domain is basically immediate. There are only a few exceptions.
| Movement Segment | Time | Check |
|---|---|---|
| fortress↔village center | 15 minutes on foot | not needed |
| village↔shrine | 20 minutes on foot | not needed |
| village↔smithy | 10 minutes on foot | not needed |
| village↔field edge | 5~15 minutes on foot | not needed |
| fortress↔Barrier edge (north) | 40 minutes on foot | not needed |
| circuit of Barrier edge (whole) | 2~3 hours on foot | not needed, but morale -1 at night |
#Night Movement
The domain changes at night.
- The Barrier glows faintly → the whole domain takes on a blue aura.
- Norm against moving alone (custom that residents move in groups of 2 or more).
- Approaching the Barrier edge is very dangerous — rumor says yoma watch from outside the Barrier.
- During night movement, roll
2d10. On a 1-1 critical failure, the character sees "something strange at the Barrier boundary"(see Barrier Boundary Events).
#Connection Between Geography And Facilities
| Zone | Main Facilities | Upgrade Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Fortress | main hall, watchtower | after Chapter 2 |
| Shrine | shrine main sanctuary | after Chapter 1 |
| Village | clinic, well, shelter | condition by facility |
| Smithy | smithy | after Chapter 1 |
| Fields | farm, storehouse | Chapters 2~3 |
| Gates | gates (3) | after Chapter 1 |
For each facility's details, see 01-04 Domain Facilities, and for upgrade routes, see 01-05.
#GM Operation Tips — Keep Geography Alive
#Keep The Palm-Sized Feeling
- State distance in time units. "15 minutes on foot" is clear.
- Have residents be called by name. Better "you passed Gorobe's house" than "you passed that house."
- Return to the same places several times. The well, central square, and shrine worship hall are recurring backdrops.
#Build Directional Awareness
- At the start of a session, describe "what the northern sky looks like today" in one sentence.
- Chain sounds, boiling water, wilderness wind — let the signature sounds of each boundary direction be faintly heard inside the domain.
- Changes in the scenery outside the Barrier are foreshadowing for major Barrier events.
#Scenes This Geography Can Support
- Night well scene: a resident drawing water alone, the sense that someone outside the Barrier is watching.
- Field patrol scene: the lord touches the rice to check whether it has changed.
- Watchtower scene: a family waiting for an expedition's return. Standing all afternoon.
- Smithy scene: the hammering once stopped. Because the artisan was sick. The domain felt strange all day.
- Barrier boundary scene: a resident stands on the boundary line, looks outside, and unconsciously reaches out.
#Rhythm Of Revealing The Map
- Chapter 1: only the domain center is clear. The 3 directions outside the Barrier are treated as "mist."
- Chapter 2: unlock the northern Black Rope forest(only areas exploration completed).
- Chapter 3: unlock the eastern Screaming lake.
- Chapter 4: unlock as far as the depths of southern Reviving Hell.
- Chapter 5: unlock the western mist boundary.
