#4 Standalone Endings - Completion If Playing Only This Chapter

#Ending A - "The First Night Endured"

Conditions: Barrier HP 40+, onmyoji survives, tyrant withdrawal/defeat succeeds, Akihisa survives.

Ending Scene:

Dawn came. The Barrier remained, trembling, and the residents looked at the sky through gaps in their windows. Lord Akihisa spoke from atop the shrine steps — "We survived the first night."

What comes after those words — tomorrow will bring it. For today, this is enough.

Gensho falls asleep inside the shrine. It is his first daytime sleep in 40 years. His hands do not shake.

The PCs return to their places. The weight of the first night still remains in their bodies. That weight is — now their own.

Aftertaste: This is the standard ending. It is enough to close a one-shot, and it also leads naturally into Chapter 2.

#Ending B - "The Lord's Choice"

Conditions: Barrier HP 15~39, onmyoji weakening 6+, tyrant withdrawal fails or 2+ retainers are killed.

Ending Scene:

Dawn came. The Barrier is half-broken. Gensho cannot rise inside the shrine. Lord Akihisa comes out of the shrine.

He stands in the center of the Barrier. The residents gather around him. He chooses one of two paths.

"We will live here" — Settlement route. Fortify the domain. Give up on the Barrier and focus on physical defense.

"We will find a way out of this land" — Exploration route. Dismantle the domain and move deeper into the Spirit Realm.

Aftertaste: This ending changes the entry conditions for Chapter 2. In the settlement route, Chapter 2: Black Rope becomes "external defense"; in the exploration route, it becomes "Spirit Realm travel."

#Ending C - "The Fallen Night"

Conditions: Barrier HP 0, or the tyrant successfully enters the inside of the Barrier.

Ending Scene:

The Barrier made a sound as it broke. It sounded like boiling water. After the sound came — stillness. Even the residents' screams were swallowed by that stillness.

Even when dawn came, the stillness remained. Generations later, another domain will fall here, and they will find strange ruins in this place. A collapsed manor, a broken sword, and — the hilt of a wakizashi bearing a name.

Aftertaste: A one-shot ending. In Chapter 4 (Scorching Heat), the ruins from this ending may reappear as "previous drifters."

#Ending D - "Flight"

Conditions: Just before the Barrier collapses, the PCs flee deeper into the Spirit Realm with some residents.

Ending Scene:

Behind you, the Barrier went out. Thirty-six people followed you across the iron-colored plain. No one knows how many of them will see the next dawn.

Ahead of you lies the outside of Reviving Hell. No one knows how far the iron-colored plain stretches.

But you are going. You did not live through the first night. You are trying to live through the second.

Aftertaste: The darkest standalone ending of the campaign. It can close as a one-shot or restructure the campaign into "Spirit Realm Wandering."

#Bridge Narrative - Into Chapter 2

If Ending A (or the special route of Ending B) is achieved, this becomes a natural bridge into Chapter 2, Black Rope Hell.

#Three Threads of the Bridge

#Thread 1 - Bronze Scroll Fragment

The scroll fragment recovered from the Nameless One's possession in Act 3.

  • Decoding begins in Chapter 2, Act 1.
  • It points to the "sealed forest" in the Black Rope Hell direction.
  • Decoders: Gensho (if weakening is low) · Myoen · Lorenzo (the priest's Latin knowledge can be used).

#Thread 2 - The Tyrant's Last Words

One sentence left by the tyrant as he withdrew.

"They are coming soon — dragging black thread. Your Barrier is thin before that thread."

  • The "black thread" is the hint for Chapter 2: Black Rope.
  • The tyrant did not betray his master, but he did not speak that master's name.

#Thread 3 - Akihisa's Diary

Akihisa adds one line to his diary of the first night.

"Today, I drew my brother's wakizashi. I cut a person down with my own hands."

  • This sentence is the starting point for Akihisa's mental shift in the early part of Chapter 2.
  • If the wakizashi was offered, the sentence changes: "Today, I gave up my brother's wakizashi. I left my brother's name — in Reviving Hell."

#Chapter 2 Starting Point

Chapter 2 begins 3~7 days after the end of Chapter 1. During this period:

  • Gensho partially recovers (weakening naturally recovers 1/day)
  • some domain facilities are rebuilt (resource expenditure)
  • resident morale adjusts naturally (+1 or -1)
  • attempts to decode the scroll begin

#GM Transition Guide - From Session 4 to Chapter 2 Session 1

#Final 5 Minutes of Session 4

GM read-aloud at session end.

"Dawn came. Then morning came. The Barrier stands — in a slightly different shape. The lord sits at the shrine. Gensho sleeps. The residents returned to their homes. Smoke rises from a kitchen — this time, it is real."

"This is the end of your first night. When the next night comes, you will remember this night."

#Chapter 2 Session 1 Opening Read-Aloud (Smooth Entry)

"One week has passed. Gensho can now stand. Three pages have been added to the lord's diary. The Barrier is — stable. But that stability is thin."

"This morning, one retainer found a single strand of black thread north of the Barrier. Black thread on iron-colored ground. It stretches long in one direction — toward the Barrier."

"You do not yet know what it is. But Gensho saw it — and stopped breathing."

#If the One-Shot Ends Here - Epilogue Read-Aloud

GM final read-aloud if closing as a one-shot.

"You survived the first night. That is all."

"How this story will continue, whether the domain will see the next night, whether your names will be carved anywhere — no one knows."

"But today, you stand inside the Barrier. Alive. That is — a small victory."

"Reviving Hell is a hell that sets the wounded up as mirrors. Your mirror did not break tonight."

#Failure Response - GM Recovery Guide

#If the Players Do Not Want Ending C

If Barrier HP has reached 0 but the players show that they "still want to survive":

  • The GM offers one final chance.
  • The onmyoji's extreme sacrifice (weakening 10 · unconscious · Barrier HP +30)
  • The narrative sacrifice of 1 PC (killed · Barrier HP +40)
  • A group ritual by 10 residents (morale -5 · Barrier HP +25)

This choice can switch the result to Ending B.

#If the Players Choose Ending D

The campaign must be restructured. Switch to "Spirit Realm Wandering" mode.

  • all domain resources are limited to what can be carried
  • no Barrier — Spirit Realm threats are front and center every session
  • Chapter 2 changes structure into "finding refuge"

#If the Players Give Up Completely

If the GM notices player fatigue during Session 4:

  • at the 3-hour point, the GM may declare "reaching dawn" (natural Ending A or B)
  • compress remaining narrative into an epilogue
  • split into the next session if the players want

#Closing - The Essence of Chapter 1

#What This Chapter Taught

  1. The Barrier is both protection and limit. It is not possible to live only inside the shield.
  2. Yoma are not just killed; they are handled. In Reviving Hell, defeating them is not everything.
  3. The lord is a decision-maker, but he needs advisers. Akihisa's strength comes from the PCs' support.
  4. The first night becomes memory. Scenes from this night return throughout the campaign.
  5. Leaving and staying carry equal courage. The moral weight of squad slots A/B is here.

#What Remains With the Players

After this chapter, the players carry the following as their own.

  • the sense of reading the Barrier HP value like a heartbeat
  • the name of one retainer (or the weight of their death)
  • the aftertaste of the tyrant's last words
  • the first name of the yoma they cut down
  • the memory of the lord's first wavering

#Before Moving to the Next Chapter

The GM and players are encouraged to spend about 10 minutes after Session 4 sharing "how this chapter felt." That sharing determines the tone of Chapter 2.

"Those who did not die on the first night remember the first night." — Hoshino Gensho, from a prayer on the second day of the Drift.

"We are here. Today, too. Tomorrow, too — we will be here. That is our victory." — Kamijo Akihisa, at the dawn of the first night.
