#Scent - The Feel of This Session
#Opening Read-Aloud
"The sun sets. Two moons rise at the same time. Tonight, the domain faces its first test."
"Immediately after the Act 3 return - Gensho sits at the end of the shrine's stone steps. Inside his sleeve, his right hand trembles. That trembling spreads across the cloth. The lord stands beside him."
"The lord says in a low voice - 'Tonight?' Gensho nods without lifting his head - 'Tonight.'"
"Beyond the castle gate, at the far end of the iron-colored plain, a red shadow rises above the horizon. That shadow moves. One step spans six jo (六丈). Two steps bring it before the castle gate. It is coming toward you."
"You do not yet have a name for it. The onmyoji calls it '蘇生暴君, the Tyrant of Revival.' Tonight, it strikes the barrier."
#Sense Card - The Air of Act 4
- Sound: the ground trembles from far away. That tremor climbs the wooden frame of the castle gate and reaches the soles of the PCs' feet. The sound of iron shards striking each other mixes with the wind.
- Smell: the iron smell is like the smell of gunpowder. This concentration is three times that of Acts 2 and 3. Breathing grows shallow.
- Light: the two moons turn blood-red. The barrier's blue light looks even thinner within that blood-red glow.
- Touch: something is in the air. A resistance that feels almost touchable if a hand reaches out. The frequency of the trembling barrier reaches the roots of the PCs' teeth.
#Sense Density
This act is dominated by the feeling of a siege against the barrier. The GM reveals the Barrier HP number every combat round. The goal is for the players to read the number like their own heartbeat.
Time notation: this act is one night. Divide it into 4 stages: early night (初夜) → Rat hour (子時) → Ox hour (丑時) → dawn. Each stage is about 2 rounds.

#Nature of This Session - "Siege Format"
Act 4 is not ordinary combat. It is a siege with the barrier as the central coordinate. The PCs cannot directly kill the "Tyrant of Revival." Instead, the PCs do the following.
- Manage barrier cracks - seal cracks that appear in the barrier, in order.
- Defend against remnants - stop Minion- and Veteran-grade yoma squads that surge toward the barrier.
- Assist the onmyoji - provide resources, time, and attention so Gensho can maintain emergency maintenance.
- Use the environment - create "cumulative strikes" using domain facilities such as the castle gate, shrine, well, and brazier.
When cumulative strikes reach the threshold, the tyrant withdraws. The goal is not defeat, but expulsion.
#Target Number Guide (Act 4 Only)

#Major Encounters - Act 4 Structure
#Overview - The Four Night Phases
Act 4 is a siege over one night. Along the timeline, it has 4 phases.
| Phase | Approx. time | Central event | Barrier HP change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 · early night | session start + 20~45 minutes | tyrant appears · 1st wave | -5 |
| Phase 2 · Rat hour | 45~90 minutes | 2nd wave · crack sealing · onmyoji first emergency | -10 |
| Phase 3 · Ox hour | 90~150 minutes | tyrant direct hit · 3rd wave · retainer sacrifice | -15~20 |
| Phase 4 · dawn | 150~210 minutes | tyrant withdraws · recovery · morning | 0 (stable) |
#Phase 1 · Early Night - Tyrant Appears
- Location: barrier before the domain's castle gate. Distance where the tyrant's silhouette is visible from the domain center.
- Appearing: tyrant (distant view), 8 subordinate reviving gaki squad members, 3 rusted kubikiri.
- Purpose: begin the siege. Establish PC placement. Let the first Barrier HP drop be felt.
#Phase 2 · Rat Hour - First Crack in the Barrier
- Location: just inside the castle gate + eastern 1/4 point of the barrier (Gensho's shrine location).
- Appearing: tyrant approaches. 2nd wave. First crack appears in the barrier.
- Purpose: first trigger of Gensho's emergency maintenance procedure. Initiative over crack sealing.
#Phase 3 · Ox Hour - Tyrant Direct Hit
- Location: barrier front. The tyrant brings both iron cudgels (鐵棍) directly down on the barrier.
- Appearing: tyrant, 3rd wave (5 rusted kubikiri + 12 reviving gaki + 6 blood-mist lesser oni).
- Purpose: the night's greatest crisis. Barrier HP approaches the threshold. Retainer sacrifice enters the story.
#Phase 4 · Dawn - Tyrant Withdrawal
- Location: barrier front. The first dawn light erases the two moons.
- Appearing: tyrant (retreating), remnants disappear.
- Purpose: end the siege. First great victory. The aftertaste of Act 4.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opening read-aloud | 0~5 minutes | read opening box | listen | first description of ground trembling |
| Declare placement | 5~15 minutes | reveal domain map · require PC placement choices | choose among 4 points | each point's name is called |
| Gensho's first notice | 15~20 minutes | publicly declare "Barrier HP starts at 75" | record number | Gensho's trembling hand is visible |
| Tyrant silhouette | 20~25 minutes | distant description + two-step approach description | react | first wave of fear |

#Phase 1 PC Placement Options
PCs choose placement among 4 points.
| Point | Role | Advantage | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| castle-gate turret | ranged/command | battlefield overview · Command bonus +1 | poor close-response |
| shrine steps | Gensho assistance | emergency-maintenance assistance check +2 | immediate exposure if barrier shatters |
| eastern barrier edge | crack watch | preemptive response to cracks | 1st wave hits directly |
| inner gate square | mobile response | can move to all points | no bonus anywhere |
For 4 PCs, place 1 at each point. With 3 PCs, leave one point empty. With 5 PCs, put 2 at one point.
#Phase 2 - Crack at Rat Hour
| Checkpoint | Timing | GM | Players | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tyrant approaches | 0~10 minutes | tyrant approaches to 2 jo before the castle gate | long-range shot possible | tyrant's face is seen for the first time |
| 2nd wave | 10~25 minutes | squad combat · strike barrier outer wall | decide combat | Barrier HP -5 (cumulative -10) |
| First crack appears | 25~35 minutes | describe eastern barrier crack (draw one line) | stand by to assist sealing | Gensho rises at the shrine |
| Onmyoji emergency maintenance | 35~55 minutes | demonstrate emergency-maintenance procedure · PC assistance intervenes | attempt assistance checks | Gensho weakening +1 |
| Crack sealing succeeds | 55~70 minutes | crack stops as a line | brief relief | Barrier HP held at 65 (decrease stops) |
| Phase 2 close | 70~90 minutes | tyrant takes one step back · describe preparation for next wave | catch breath · can redeploy | one retainer name is called |
#Onmyoji Emergency Maintenance Procedure
Gensho's emergency maintenance proceeds in 4 steps. Each step has a PC assistance check.
| Step | GM description | PC assistance check | Gensho weakening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Liturgy cutting | Gensho scatters ash on the floor and draws characters | assist Target Number 11 · on failure, liturgy delayed | +0 |
| 2. Blood signature | Gensho cuts his finger and signs over the liturgy | staunch bleeding assist Target Number 11 · on failure, +1 weakening | +1 |
| 3. Core summoning | summon 1 core from core storage (Minion-grade) | core supply automatic · storage -1 | +0 |
| 4. Sealing | place the core on the liturgy and bind it to the barrier crack | Perception assist Target Number 13 · on failure, +1 weakening | +1 cumulative |
Total weakening increase: base +2 (liturgy + sealing), +4 if all assistance fails.
If weakening exceeds 5, Gensho falls unconscious. Keeping it at 5 or lower is the top priority of Act 4.
#Barrier Crack Sealing Check
When a crack appears, PCs respond with one of the following.
| Response | Check | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Onmyoji assistance (standard) | 4-step assistance above | crack stopped + weakening increase |
| Direct core injection (emergency) | automatic success | consume 1 core + crack stopped + Barrier HP +3 |
| Retainer sacrifice (extreme) | narrative check | crack stopped + Barrier HP +5 + 1 retainer severely wounded/killed |
| Lure outside the barrier (heroic) | Target Number 15 | change tyrant's attack line · castle gate temporarily exposed |
#Phase 3 - Direct Hit at Ox Hour
This phase is the peak of Act 4. Barrier HP approaches the threshold.
| Checkpoint | Timing | GM | Players | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Declare tyrant direct hit | 0~10 minutes | describe tyrant bringing iron cudgel down on the barrier | free reaction | Barrier HP -10 (1 hit) |
| 3rd wave | 10~30 minutes | rusted kubikiri, reviving gaki, and blood-mist lesser oni join | decide combat | Barrier HP -5 (cumulative -15) |
| Retainer danger | 30~45 minutes | 1 retainer severely wounded · PCs choose rescue | rescue vs hold line | retainer name called |
| Second crack | 45~60 minutes | northern barrier crack appears | onmyoji emergency 2nd time | Gensho weakening +2 |
| Akihisa sortie | 60~75 minutes | lord stands before the castle gate · "I will speak with that one" | dissuade vs accompany vs allow | possible image of Akihisa forced to his knees |
| Tyrant conversation | 75~105 minutes | tyrant's first line (see below) | answer | Heart tendency branch |
| Phase 3 climax | 105~135 minutes | Barrier HP in the 40~50 range · risk of tyrant's second direct hit | decisive choice (below) | Barrier HP low point |
| Phase 3 close | 135~150 minutes | tyrant pauses one beat · onmyoji collapses or PC decision | transition | just before dawn |
#Tyrant's Line (Phase 3)
The tyrant speaks from outside the barrier to Akihisa (or to the PC commander).
"Little one. Your barrier is thin. Thinner than the speed at which my flesh grows. You will know this - my flesh grows every moment. Your barrier thins every moment."
"This comparison is not on your side."
"And yet I have not eaten you yet. Because one of you has something to hand me. The old blade on the little one's shoulder. That blade is mine. Give it to me, and tonight ends."
#Akihisa's Choice - Elder Brother's Wakizashi
What the tyrant demands is the wakizashi left by Akihisa's elder brother. There is half a truth in this demand - the wakizashi was a "spiritual blade" that sealed the soul of a yoma in battle before the drift, and that yoma is the tyrant's previous life (前生).
| PC intervention | Effect |
|---|---|
| allow Akihisa to go + surrender the blade | tyrant withdraws immediately · Barrier HP recovery +10 · Akihisa Heart tendency 覇-2 慈+1 · "unarmed lord" in the next chapter |
| Akihisa goes + dialogue to preserve the blade | Target Number 15 Negotiation · on success, tyrant withdraws + blade preserved · on failure, tyrant resumes direct hits |
| PC takes the duel instead | tyrant resumes direct hits · Barrier HP continuous -15 · if held until dawn, victory |
| dissuade Akihisa + PC defense | standard route · naturally enter Phase 4 |
#Phase 4 - Withdrawal at Dawn
| Checkpoint | Timing | GM | Players | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First dawn light | 0~10 minutes | two moons lean west, eastern sky grows pale | observe | tyrant looks at the sky |
| Tyrant withdraws | 10~25 minutes | tyrant takes one step back · "Today ends here" | final shot possible | tyrant's back |
| Remnants disappear | 25~40 minutes | remnants around the barrier scatter into iron shards | clean up | morale +1 |
| Barrier recovery | 40~55 minutes | Gensho collapses · PC care · reveal final Barrier HP | Nursing check | Barrier HP fixed |
| Retainer recovery | 55~75 minutes | confirm severely wounded/killed retainers · funeral or healing | judgment · honorifics | names fixed |
| Face residents | 75~95 minutes | residents gather in the mansion yard · lord's words | one line from each PC | final morale |
| Session close | 95~120 minutes | "the first night is over" · one emotional sentence from each PC | each says one line | fadeout |
#Four Dawn Ending Tones
The GM chooses the dawn scene's tone according to the result of Phase 3.
| Condition | Tone | Key sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier HP 60+ · onmyoji weakening ≤3 · retainer casualties 0 | solid victory | "We held it back." |
| Barrier HP 40~59 · onmyoji weakening 4~6 · 1~2 retainers severely wounded | narrow victory | "We survived." |
| Barrier HP 20~39 · onmyoji weakening 7~9 · 1 retainer killed | deadly victory | "What did we pay?" |
| Barrier HP 0~19 · onmyoji unconscious · 2+ retainers killed | defeat-victory | "We never speak of that night again." |
#Barrier Siege Format - Standard Procedure
#Round Flow
The siege proceeds every round in this order.
- GM declaration - Barrier HP · onmyoji weakening · enemy action this round
- Enemy action check - tyrant + wave + crack occurrence dice
- PC action declaration - declare one action for each PC
- PC checks - each rolls 2d10 + modifiers
- Apply results - Barrier HP · weakening · enemy Wounds changes
- GM description - describe this round's result (within 45 seconds)
One round = 5~8 minutes of real time.
#Tyrant Action Table
The tyrant determines action each round with d10.
| Die | Action | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1~2 | iron cudgel slam (barrier direct hit) | Barrier HP -10 |
| 3~4 | lateral turn (barrier crack occurs) | 1 crack occurs · Barrier HP -3 |
| 5~6 | command remnants | wave +1 strengthened |
| 7~8 | rest (flesh regenerates) | tyrant appearance recovers · Barrier HP -1 |
| 9 | speak to Akihisa | Heart tendency branch |
| 10 | attempt barrier penetration (extreme) | Barrier HP -20 · negated by Target Number 15 shot |
#Wave Action Table
Each round, the remnant wave determines joining numbers with d10.
| Die | Join |
|---|---|
| 1~3 | 2 reviving gaki |
| 4~6 | 3 reviving gaki + 1 rusted kubikiri |
| 7~8 | 4 reviving gaki + 2 rusted kubikiri |
| 9 | 5 reviving gaki + 2 rusted kubikiri + 1 blood-mist lesser oni |
| 10 | special join (GM design) |
#Success / Failure Branches
#Victory Conditions (conditions to enter Phase 4)
Enter Phase 4 when one of the following is achieved.
- Cumulative strike threshold: 15 successful cumulative checks against the tyrant (including shots, taunts, and crack sealing)
- Reach dawn: keep Barrier HP at 1 or higher until the end of Phase 3
- Offering ending: Akihisa offers the wakizashi
#Defeat Conditions
- Barrier HP 0 → tyrant enters inside the barrier → Ending C, "Fallen Night"
- Onmyoji weakening 10 → barrier collapses immediately → Ending C
- Akihisa killed → narrative defeat → Ending B, "Lord's Choice" branch (choose successor)
#Partial Victory
| Axis | State |
|---|---|
| Barrier HP 60+ | solid victory - Ending A |
| Barrier HP 40~59 | narrow victory - Ending A (stigma) |
| Barrier HP 20~39 | deadly victory - Ending B |
| Barrier HP 1~19 | defeat-victory - Ending B (despair) |
#Final Barrier HP Changes
| Cause | Normal | Worst |
|---|---|---|
| 1st wave | -5 | -8 |
| 2nd wave | -5 | -10 |
| tyrant direct hit | -10 | -20 |
| 3rd wave | -5 | -10 |
| unsealed crack | -3 per round | -5 |
| core injection | +3 (each) | +5 (Lord-grade fragment) |
| retainer sacrifice | +5 | +8 |
#Final Onmyoji Weakening
| Timing | Expected |
|---|---|
| end of Phase 2 | +2 |
| end of Phase 3 | +4~6 |
| end of Phase 4 | +5~8 (final) |
If weakening is 8 or higher, Gensho loses his speech until the start of Chapter 2. Recovery point is Chapter 2, Act 2.
#GM Controls - Pacing and Tone Adjustment
#Pacing
Act 4 is the longest session. Expect 3~4 hours. If the pace drags, omit remnant waves and focus on the tyrant.
| Situation | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| players are confused and cannot decide placement | GM presents recommended placement · 30-second limited decision |
| combat runs too long | omit remnant 3rd wave · go straight to tyrant direct hit |
| players show signs of giving up | insert one dramatic retainer sacrifice · restore morale |
| players win too easily | extend 2nd crack into 3rd · bias tyrant action table toward 7~8 |
#Avoiding Tone Traps
- Do not let the siege become a numbers game. Every round, the GM must give one sensory scene description.
- Do not turn the tyrant into a cartoon villain. The tyrant has "tragic roots." The previous life of one once sealed in the elder brother's wakizashi.
- Do not drive Gensho into martyrdom. His weakening is duty, not a choice.
- Do not force Akihisa's choice. Give PCs enough room to intervene.
#Session-End Declaration
| Signal | Example line |
|---|---|
| dawn reached | "The two moons lean west. We stand here." |
| tyrant withdraws | "His back disappears beyond the horizon. He will not return today - but he will come again." |
| emotional climax | "The residents look at you. You stand before them. One line each." |
| fadeout | "The first night ended." |
#Environmental Use Rules - The Last Use of Domain Facilities
In Act 4, PCs can use domain facilities as one-use assets. Each facility use is a permanent loss.
#Facility Use Table
| Facility | Use | Effect | Permanent loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| castle gate timbers | drop upper structure | instantly wipe out 1 reviving gaki squad | castle gate half-destroyed · repair needed in Chapter 2 |
| shrine brazier | ember explosion | flames in 3m radius outside barrier wall · delay 2 rusted kubikiri | brazier destroyed · onmyoji ritual impossible |
| well | evaporate well water | destroy 1 blood-mist lesser oni | drinking water -3 weeks |
| rice storehouse | pour rice (temporary fill for barrier crack) | Barrier HP +5 | food -2 weeks |
| elder brother's wakizashi | offer to tyrant | tyrant withdraws immediately | Akihisa disarmed |
| Akihisa family banner (旗) | detonate banner | all PCs next round +2 morale bonus | banner lost · morale -1 |
| all talismans around the domain radius | consume at once | Barrier HP +10 · skip 1 next wave | all talisman storage gone |
#Environmental Use Check
Environmental use is an environmental check, Target Number 13. On check failure, facility loss + half the desired effect.
#Narrative Meaning of Environmental Use
When PCs use a facility, the GM clearly describes what is lost. This is the Act 4 tone of "what do we pay."
#Clues - What This Act Solves / Plants
#Clues Solved in This Act
| Clue | Source | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Acts 1~3 "Reviving Hell revival principle" | fragment gained in Act 3 ruins | in Act 4 Phase 2, the onmyoji explains the "mirror law" |
| Act 1 "Akihisa's elder brother's wakizashi" | blade on the Act 1 council-room table | tyrant demands it in Act 4 Phase 3 |
| Act 3 "previous drifter clue" | corpse that does not revive | not touched in Act 4 (carried to Chapter 3) |
#Clues Planted in This Act (for the next chapter)
| Clue | Planting scene | Next chapter answer |
|---|---|---|
| tyrant's previous-life identity | Phase 3 line | tyrant's record found in Chapter 2, Black Rope Hell |
| Gensho's hidden liturgy | paper Gensho takes from his robe during Phase 2 emergency maintenance | same handwriting as the Chapter 3 sealing records |
| truth of Akihisa's elder brother's death | hinted in tyrant's Phase 3 line | elder brother's diary found in Chapter 2 |
#Retainer Sacrifice Narrative - Emotional Core of Act 4
#Why Retainers Die
Act 4 assumes that "the PCs survive." Instead, severe wounds/deaths among 1~2 retainers carry the narrative weight. A retainer's death must be the result of a player choice.
#Retainer Sacrifice Pattern
The moment PCs choose one of the following, 1 retainer is placed in danger.
| Choice | Retainer placed in danger (example) |
|---|---|
| not enough cores to seal the barrier crack | Yamaguchi (retainer 1) - "I will go in place of the resource" |
| protect Akihisa just before the tyrant's blow | Sakurai (retainer 3) - blocks the lord's front |
| conversation to lure the tyrant outside the barrier fails | Ino (retainer 2) - goes out as the lure |
| secure PC retreat during 3rd wave | Tsukahara (retainer 4) - holds the rear |
#Apply Sacrifice Results
When a retainer is severely wounded/killed, apply the following effects.
- Barrier HP +5 (narrative reward)
- resident morale -1 (if the retainer dies)
- memorialize that retainer's name in the next chapter (if dead)
- PC Heart tendency: 慈 +1 (if rescue attempted), 覇 +1 (if sacrifice allowed)
Which retainer to place as the sacrifice is the GM's choice. The GM decides before this session. If the GM deliberately chooses the retainer who spoke most with the PCs during the Act 1 patrol, the emotion becomes heavier.
#Limits on Retainer Sacrifice
No more than 2 retainers may die in one session. More than that is narrative overload. If the PCs' emotional defenses break, play quality drops.
#Player Action Pattern Guide - Open Choices in Act 4
#Siege PC Action Categories
| Category | Main action | Example |
|---|---|---|
| defensive | wait inside barrier · defend against remnants | drive off a gaki squad inside the castle gate |
| support | assist onmyoji/residents | assist emergency maintenance · resident evacuation |
| assault | close combat outside barrier | break through the kubikiri screen |
| sniper | key long-range strikes | attempt shots at tyrant eye/neck |
| lure | draw attention through negotiation/taunts | speak to tyrant to buy time |
| environmental | use facilities | order castle-gate upper structure to fall |
For 4 PCs, each PC specializes in 1~2 categories. If everyone is assault, barrier defense collapses. If everyone is support, the front disappears. The GM guides balance during placement.
#Action Economy - What Can Be Done in One Round
One PC can do one of the following in one round.
- Standard attack (2d10 check + damage)
- Maneuver (Core 03-07)
- Environmental use (Target Number 13)
- Onmyoji assistance (Target Number 11~13)
- Guide resident evacuation (Target Number 11)
- Special shot (Target Number 15)
- Retainer rescue (maneuver adjustment)
Within one round: movement + one action. Long-distance movement consumes 1 action.
#After This Session - Next
- Rewards, domain changes, and bridge: 10-07 Rewards and Bridge
- Chapter NPCs: 10-05 Chapter NPCs
- Chapter Yoma Stats: 10-06 Chapter Yoma
