#§ Check Procedure (Core Reuse)

Checks for this section's 6 skills (Military Science・Negotiation・Intimidation・Bribery・Agitation・Deceit) are handled by applying core 03-09 Non-Combat Checks Target Number 11-17 + 04-01 Skills. This extension adds no new Target Number table; it adds only school bonuses.

morale ±N policy: This section's "squad morale ±N" notation is, with the core alone = squad Cohesion ±N (06-units). When using a 1st-extension campaign it is auto-compatible with domain morale; when using the 30-03 variant it is auto-compatible with this extension's morale — see the mapping at 00-05 §12.

#Identity

The core's 6 Command skills (Military Science・Negotiation・Intimidation・Bribery・Agitation・Deceit) have no schools at all. This extension establishes schools for all 6 skills. Command-skill schools answer the varied table demands of political campaigns, diplomatic play, mass combat, and court intrigue.

#§ Scent — The Same Formation, A Different Name

A military camp in Zhejiang of Ming. A junior officer of Qi Jiguang's unit was calling the roll of his own infantry rank. The first rank knelt, the matchlocks in their hands firing at once. The next rank, after one breath, fired a volley. The next rank, again one breath. It was the three-rank volley.

In another corner of the same camp, a military advisor who had come from the Netherlands was drawing in his own notebook. He pointed his finger at the formation of Qi Jiguang's unit. Then he showed the drawing in his own notebook. Maurits van Nassau's countermarch. The Dutch infantry formation established in 1594 by Count Maurits van Nassau.

Qi Jiguang's unit commander looked at the drawing. It was the very same formation as his own.

"This is our Square Formation (正方陣)," said the commander.

"It is our countermarch," answered the Dutchman.

The two compared each other's formations. The command signals differed — Ming with drums, the Netherlands with horns. The rank length differed — Ming with 9 men, the Netherlands with 12 men. Yet the essence was the same. While one rank fired, the next rank loaded, the next rank next, next, next — an unbroken flow of firepower.

"Who found it out first?" the commander asked.

The Dutchman smiled. "You did it in the 1560s, and Maurice did it in 1594. We were late."

"We too were late. I heard those who shot the crossbow (弩) in the Han era used the same formation."

The same breath is discovered separately in different eras, on different continents. Command is that kind of art — not a question of who was first, but of who made it more their own formation.

"Words travel farther than the blade. A lie, farther still."
