#Dan 10 — Those Who Became Legend

Contents

Dan 10 Use Standard. Dan 10 (master) is the terminal dan — all advanced class talents and Renown Title open (cumulative: total attribute bonuses +8, 19 skill points, 14 talents[gaijin 15]). A Renown Title is not a numeric bonus, but a Dan 10 title + 1 capstone talent (co-04-05), and is itself a campaign-ending device. Commoners cannot become Dan 10, so slot No. 6 is a Dan 9 Commoner Master Artisan (no Renown Title).

#Scent — The Seat That Ends by Name Alone

Dan 10 is a legend whose name is known across the country. By his name alone, one side of a battle withdraws, and the scene ends before he draws the sword. Every person from Dan 1 to Dan 9 has ultimately walked toward this seat, or has revered someone in this seat as mentor or enemy.

But the five in this chapter are not dangerous because they are strong — they are dangerous because the story ends the moment they become legends. A Renown Title is not data to run, but a person for one scene that closes a campaign.

#Law-Ω — Renown Title Operation Warning (Scene Tool · Chapter-Specific)

These five are not "strong enemies to run constantly." This transfers the GM warning in co-04-05 into card operation.

  • Renown Titles intentionally invalidate core systems. Renown Titles are designed to break core rules such as Domination, Breakthrough, Energy economy, incapacitation, and checks. When putting these cards into play as enemies or allies, the GM must understand their weight.
  • Renown Title stacking warning. If a Dan 10 NPC is placed on the same battlefield as a PC with a Renown Title, core mechanisms may all collapse (for example, Dharma King + War God in the same place makes victory and defeat impossible to calculate).
  • Operation guideline. Therefore, use these cards as "people for one scene that ends the story" — a node that appears once and closes one campaign. Their weaknesses, regrets, and relationships are made thick so that Renown Title does not cover everything.

#1. Hojo Gensetsusai (北条玄雪斎) — Dan 10 Samurai · Renown Title: Peerless Full Body (武雙全身)

Hojo Gensetsusai, tenth-dan samurai with Muso Zenshin renown, complete upper body from head to waist, armored but still, sword guard centered, immovable battlefield wall presence.

When he stands in formation, one army withdraws before drawing its swords.

A realm-scale commander who holds Kanto in one hand. He began with revenge for a destroyed house and crossed beyond one region. When he draws "Tenka Muso," the ending of a campaign hangs on that one stroke.

Wounds 6, Defense 17(masterwork heavy armor "Teppeki no Gusoku"), Energy 12. Courage+3, Physique+3, Finesse+2, Presence+1, Wisdom 0, Fate-1.

Source: co canon + masterworks "Teppeki no Gusoku" and "Tenka Muso" = narrow Canon (this volume only).

Renown Title "Peerless Full Body(武雙全身)"[stance] — samurai class capstone (co-04-05). Title + capstone talent. Not a "+N numeric" effect. Core-invalidating tier — campaign-ending device.

Masterwork "Tenka Muso(天下無雙)"[co-07-02 · narrow Canon] — Ownership Conditions: Peerless Full Body Renown Title and Swordsmanship Master. Masterwork Technique: One Blade Under Heaven[form] (Swordsmanship Master prerequisite — met). Curse[aptitude]: this sword passes only to one who defeats its wielder (ownership = recognition of martial strength).

Masterwork Heavy Armor "Teppeki no Gusoku(鐵壁具足)"[co-07-02 · narrow Canon] — Ownership Condition: recognition of military merit (bestowed by a lord). Defense 17(masterwork heavy armor). Masterwork Technique: Ironwall[form] (Fighting Spirit Master prerequisite — met). Blessing[aptitude]: Defense +2 against yokai attacks.

  • Operation. Front Zone anchor (Immovable Formation), Musou, Invincible Under Heaven, Against Ten Thousand (advanced), Swordsmanship and Fighting Spirit Masters, masterwork Tenka Muso (One Blade Under Heaven) and Teppeki no Gusoku (Ironwall), Renown Title Peerless Full Body (core invalidation — §Law-Ω warning). Non-combat: head of a realm-scale warrior house. Weakness: still bound by the revenge where he began — a regret he cannot release even while holding the realm.
  • Relationship Hook. Realm-scale commander who can end the campaign (adversary). First retainer Jingoro (Dan 8) and swordmaster Muso (Dan 9) revere or oppose him — the destination of Dan 1-9 warriors.
  • PC Conversion. Samurai Dan 1→10, choose Renown Title Peerless Full Body at master. Renown Title is a campaign-ending device — if a PC reaches this point, that campaign is in its final chapter.

#2. Nameless Sword Demon (無銘の剣鬼) — Dan 10 Ronin · Renown Title: Sword Saint (劍聖)

The Nameless Sword Demon, complete upper body from head to waist, face partly lost in hair shadow but skin left white, sword already half-drawn, body edges fading into blank white.

He has neither name nor dojo — but when he draws, he does not miss.

A swordmaster secluded in the mountains of Ou. He discarded even his name and is called the "nameless sword demon (無銘)." His Swordsmanship has reached the state of a saint (聖人) — his sword does not miss (automatic success). He waits for one disciple to teach the final move, or for one person to end him.

Nameless Sword Demon (無銘の剣鬼) — Dan 10 ronin · mentor(secluded swordmaster)

Wounds 5, Defense 12(light armor), Energy 13. Finesse+3, Courage+3, Physique+2, Wisdom 0, Presence 0, Fate 0.

Equipment: uchigatana(nameless sword) · kodachi · light armor · sedge hat and straw sandals. 3 gold.
Source: co canon — no source badge needed.

Renown Title "Sword Saint(劍聖)"skill saint (co-04-05: Swordsmanship -> Sword Saint). Swordsmanship checks automatically succeed (Saint 5 points — mythic ability). Title + capstone. Not "+N" — an ending-tier automatic success effect.

  • Operation. Swordsmanship Saint (automatic success — myth of the sword), Shadowless, Shadowless Guest, Issen (advanced), free Core Zone entry (Blade of the Wind). Non-combat: final transmission of the sword, seclusion. Weakness: nothing but the sword — regret of a secluded master seeking a place to die. (Because he owns nothing but the one sword in his hand, he keeps neither masterwork nor dojo.)
  • Relationship Hook. The final teaching of the sword (mentor). The one step swordmaster Muso (Dan 9) could not reach — the Sword Demon sits in the place Muso delayed.
  • PC Conversion. Ronin Dan 1→10, choose Renown Title Sword Saint (skill saint — Swordsmanship 5 points) at master. Terminus of a single build that staked a lifetime on one sword.

#3. Soan of Sakai (堺の宗安) — Dan 10 Merchant · Renown Title: King of Finance (財界王)

Soan of Sakai, tenth-dan merchant king, complete upper body from head to waist, blank ledgers and sealed trade cord, power expressed through stillness rather than wealth detail.

When he closes a ledger, a domain's supply is cut off.

A realm-level merchant magnate who holds Sakai in Kinai in one hand. He has gone beyond the go-shu and seized the finance of an age. He has no sword, but one bill of exchange from him moves daimyo and decides battles — he holds the board.

Soan of Sakai (堺の宗安) — Dan 10 merchant · client(realm-scale power broker)
Secondary Class: none (single class)
Wounds 3, Defense 10(plain clothes), Energy 12. Presence+3, Wisdom+3, Finesse+2, Physique 0, Courage 0, Fate 0.

Equipment: kaiken · many bodyguards · abacus, realm ledger, bills of exchange · tea bowl under heaven · silk. 20 gold(cap).
Source: co canon — no source badge needed.

Renown Title "King of Finance(財界王)"[aptitude] — background capstone (merchant's child A merchant-house management -> King of Finance, co-04-05). Permanently cuts off enemy supply · realm-scale funds. Title + capstone. Not "+N" — an ending-tier effect that severs the supply line itself.

  • Operation. Gold tactics, War Economy, Zaibatsu, Merchant Under Heaven (advanced), Negotiation and Bribery Masters, Renown Title King of Finance (permanent enemy supply cutoff — §Law-Ω warning). Core Zone entry is forced Breakthrough. Non-combat: realm-level merchant magnate, power broker, city autonomy head, tea gatherings. Weakness: no martial power (Wounds 3); the realm's wealth is itself the largest target.
  • Relationship Hook. Realm-scale power broker who holds the board (client/political double edge). Magnate Sotoku (Dan 5), head Doami (Dan 8), and Black Merchant Jinsuke (Dan 3) are under his trade rights — peak of this volume's merchants.
  • PC Conversion. Merchant Dan 1→10, Dan 5 merchant-house management branch -> master Renown Title King of Finance (background capstone). The terminus of a build that reaches the realm without a sword.

#4. Dainichibo of Koya (高野の大日坊) — Dan 10 Esoteric Monk + Arahitogami Dual Build · Renown Title: Dharma Body (法身)

Dainichibo of Koya, mikkyo-arahitogami dual build, complete upper body from head to waist, vajra, beads, and broad white robe, divine monk presence in empty space.

A living kami-buddha — the place where he stands is the Pure Land.

A living kami-buddha enshrined in the Koya (高野) temple gate of Saikai. He holds both vajra exorcism and sacred-ground faith in one body and is known as the "Dharma Body (法身)." In the zone where he stands, yokai perish and the dead rise again — his name alone drives back a region's darkness.

Prerequisites: Presence +2 · Wisdom +1 · faith background (arahitogami prerequisites met). Borrowed talent: 1 general slot is replaced with the arahitogami Dan 3 talent Blessing. Secondary Renown Title, secondary Dan 1 automatic (Manifest Divine Majesty), and Dan 7+ are not gained. Core Zone entry follows the primary esoteric monk (Mark of Asura — free Core Zone entry). Dan 10 dedicated Renown Title = Dharma Body (法身).
  • Operation. Free Core Zone entry (Mark of Asura), close exorcism (Unarmed Combat and Exorcism Masters — Human Weapon and Protection of Dainichi Nyorai), sacred ground and Blessing (secondary arahitogami — Faith), Divine Treasure (Sokushinbutsu), Renown Title Dharma Body (automatic Exorcism success inside sacred ground — §Law-Ω warning). Non-combat: living kami-buddha, legendary exorcist, patron of faith. Weakness: loneliness of one who has gone beyond human, the cost of faith and Divine Treasure (burns the flesh).
  • Relationship Hook. Legendary ally who stands with the PCs at the end (ally). Executor monk Kakuen (Dan 6), preacher Gyonen (Dan 7), and the arahitogami revere him as the peak of the temple gate.
  • PC Conversion. Esoteric monk Dan 1→10, declare secondary arahitogami at Dan 3 -> master dedicated Renown Title Dharma Body. Why two paths: sacred-ground faith joins vajra exorcism and becomes a kami-buddha. See dual build patterns.

Ryujinsai of Echigo, fengshui-mikkyo dual build, complete upper body from head to waist, staff and blank geomancy board, leyline wind shown as two black curves.

A practitioner who rules the leylines (靈脈) of Echigo in Hokuriku. He adds esoteric barriers to feng shui earth-veins and is known as the "Ley-Line Master (靈脈師)." When he twists leylines, an ordinary field collapses and a road that did not exist rises — he makes the battlefield itself.

  • Dual Build. Primary feng shui master / secondary esoteric monk (declared at Dan 3) · master (primary+secondary total 10). Prerequisites: Physique +3 · Exorcism Licensed (esoteric monk prerequisite: Physique+2, Exorcism initiated+). Borrowed talent: 1 general slot is replaced with the esoteric monk Dan 3 talent Vajra-Body. Secondary Renown Title, secondary Dan 1 automatic (Mark of Asura), and Dan 7+ are not gained. Core Zone entry follows the primary feng shui master (forced Breakthrough). Dan 10 dedicated Renown Title = Ley-Line Master (靈脈師).
  • Operation. Leyline manipulation (Twist Leyline, Zone Creation, Ideal Realm Creation), Barrier and Geography Masters, secondary esoteric exorcism (Vajra-Body, barrier linkage), Renown Title Ley-Line Master (free zone creation/destruction — §Law-Ω warning). Core Zone entry is forced Breakthrough. Non-combat: realm-level feng shui, leyline and barrier practitioner, fortune. Weakness: ordinary martial power; cannot stay in one place — he holds the land but has no place of his own.
  • Relationship Hook. Leyline practitioner of another power, rival to the PCs' practitioner (rival). Destination of leyline practitioner Dosetsu (Dan 7) and Genan (Dan 3) — peak of this volume's feng shui masters.

#6. Torazo of Bizen (備前の虎蔵) — Dan 9 Commoner · Livelihood:Blacksmithing (Master Artisan)

Torazo of Bizen, legendary smith commoner, complete upper body from head to waist, hammer, tongs, and unfinished blade, old master intensity, no forge clutter.

His sword becomes legend in the hand of a famous commander.

A Master Artisan swordsmith (刀工) of Bizen in Sanyo-Sanin. His blades, known beyond one region, become legend not through him but in the hands of the commanders who hold them. The highest seat Commoners can reach — Dan 9 Master Artisan. Renown Title is not his path, but his swords create Renown Titles.

Torazo of Bizen (備前の虎蔵) — Dan 9 Commoner · local figure(legendary swordsmith) [ex1-99-06]
Wounds 6, Defense 10(work clothes), Energy 12. Physique+3, Finesse+2, Wisdom+2, Presence 0, Courage 0, Fate 0.
Background: farmer (Dan 5 branch A commoner leader) | Path/Heart: Way of Mystery / Truth (Inscribed Heart)
Skills(Dan 1: 9 points[free allocation 5+background 2+free 2] + 4 even-numbered dan +2 = 17 points): Perception Licensed · Disable/Geography/Negotiation Trained · Survival/Agitation/Hardiness/Herbalism/Bearing/Intimidation/Fortune/Prophecy Novice (license 1=Perception) · Livelihood:Blacksmithing Master Artisan [ex1-99-05] is separate
Talents: (no automatic talent — Commoner) Child of the Earth[aptitude](background) · Grasp Popular Sentiment(Dan 5 background branch A) / Skilled, Tough, Long Haul, Indomitable, Danger Sense, Lucky, Quick, Field Command, Yokai Knowledge[aptitude] (9 general, all within the 10 Commoner types)
Equipment: forge(bellows, anvil, water, charcoal) · sword tools · famous blade sample · work clothes, apron · swordmaking register, za license. 8 gold.
Source: Commoner [ex1-99-06] · Livelihood:Blacksmithing [ex1-99-05]. If ex1 is absent — replace with an unranked non-combat legendary NPC.
  • Operation. Non-combat — sword crafting (Livelihood:Blacksmithing Master Artisan +3 — known beyond one region, cannot be used for battlefield checks), za leadership (Grasp Popular Sentiment), trade (Negotiation). Local figure and Master Artisan: legendary swordsmith of Bizen; his swords are masterworks — the masterwork arms in fc05 Meitoki come from his hands. Peak Commoners can reach (Dan 9 Master Artisan), and the last of the 10 Commoners in this volume. On the battlefield, he is an untrained Commoner -> treated as rabble (雜) (Wounds 0, instant death). Individual data is limited to non-combat and narrative moments.
  • Backstory. Renown Title is not his path (Commoners cannot reach Dan 10 or Renown Title). But if the swords he forged are held by Peerless Full Body (No. 1 in this chapter) or Sword Saint (No. 2), legend rises from those swords as well. He reached, through blades, a state no single lifetime could reach alone.
  • Relationship Hook. PCs, daimyo, and swordmasters become entangled over his blades (local figure). The warriors and swordmasters across this volume pass over his anvil — a non-combat axis of an age linking Dan 1-10.
  • PC Conversion. Commoners cannot be used as PCs. (A Dan 9 Commoner Master Artisan is the terminus of Commoners in this volume — Renown Title and Dan 10 belong to the adventurer path.)

#Closing Dan Note — The Terminus of This Volume

These six are the destination of Dan 1-9 figures.

  • Five Roads to Renown Title. Class (Peerless Full Body), skill saint (Sword Saint), background (King of Finance), dedicated (Dharma Body and Ley-Line Master) — the 3-part Renown Title system in co-04-05 and the dedicated dual-build Renown Titles gather on one page. The five show that any road can reach legend.
  • The Sword and the Hand That Made It. The swords held by No. 1 and No. 2 may have passed over the anvil of No. 6 (swordsmith Torazo) — the one who bears a Renown Title and the one who made a Renown Title stand on one page. Legend is not one path.
  • Those Moving Toward the End. As §Law-Ω warns, these five are not data to run but scenes to close with. When they appear, one campaign moves toward its end.

#Scent — One Sentence

"To become legend means there is nowhere left to grow, and so it is time for the story to let him go."
