#Mountain / Yoma Scenario Seeds

Contents

Fiction-Only. This document holds 7 scenario seeds of the mountain / yoma-subjugation side of a Heian campaign. Each seed is 1~2 sessions in length. For the court / aristocratic side, see fc04-06-01-aristocratic.md. This volume's spec — minimize new sheets. Prioritize the reuse of co and ex2.

#Opening Fragment — The Answer of the Mountain Road

To have lost the way in a mountain scenario was no mistake. The road chose the people. At the first fork stood an old Jizo statue, at the second a broken horagai, and at the third no marker at all.

"On the map it's to the right," the scholar PC said.

The yamabushi shook his head. "The map draws the mountain of day. Now it is the mountain of night."

The samurai grew irritated. "Do you mean the mountain changes its roads between day and night?"

"Do people not say different things by day and by night?" The yamabushi listened. From far off came a sound like a child's cry, and soon it turned into the sound of a horagai. "That sound is not calling us. It is waiting for us to follow."

At the fourth fork there was no sound at all. And so everyone looked that way. A mountain scenario begins the moment you lose the way, and deepens further the moment the road answers.

#This Document's Place

Seeds of the mountain / yoma-subjugation side of a Heian campaign. PC squad composition: samurai PC 1~2 + onmyoji PC 1 + shugenja PC 1 is the standard (the Yorimitsu type).

Each seed is in the structure of "Trigger, Conjecture, PC Role, Effect, Sheet Handling."

#Seed 1 — "The Remnant of Mt. Oe (殘者)"

#Trigger

Some years after the Shuten-doji subjugation. The retainer oni left on Mt. Oe begin to stir again. The people of the foothill villages are vanishing. One farmer's testimony: "In the mountains an old song can be heard — it is Shuten-doji's banquet song."

#Conjecture

A surviving retainer, not in Shuten-doji's direct line. See the "Remnant of Shuten-doji" item of this volume's fc04-04-01-shutendoji.md.

#PC Role

A Yorimitsu-type squad — samurai + onmyoji. Subjugation. But the PCs of this scenario are not Yorimitsu's own squad, rather a squad of a later generation.

#Sheet Handling

  • the remnant = Elite-grade (Wounds 5~6, one step below a plain oni king)
  • use the co-11-18-monster-template.md form
  • reskin co's ordinary "oni" sheet (adding only the flavor of being a direct retainer of Shuten-doji)

#Effect

EffectCategory
the remnant's strikeenemy PC Wounds -2
the remnant's song of madnessPC Mental Save — on failure, Wounds -1 (mental damage)

#Seed 2 — "The Procession Across the River"

#Trigger

As a PC tries to cross Shijo Bridge at midnight — from across the bridge a Hyakki Yako procession draws near. A hundred lanterns. The sound of singing. It is the set hour.

#Conjecture

A set Hyakki Yako. The PCs must survive by the correct talismans, stances, and utterances.

#PC Role

  • onmyoji PC — casting a Barrier. Putting everyone inside the Barrier.
  • shugenja PC — holding a talisman (a mother's or a master's). The correct stance, silence.
  • samurai PC — never draws the blade. Does not take up the bow. Silence.

#Sheet Handling

The procession as a whole is not made into a sheet. Follow the handling guide of fc04-02-01-hyakkiyako.md — co's co-09-11-hyakki-yagyo.md scenario can be used as-is.

#Effect — Handling "One Drawn Into the Procession"

StageHandling
1. advance warningat the scenario's start, the GM explicitly advises "death risk if you take up blade or bow"
2. evasion checkupon gaze or utterance toward the procession — roll an evasion (Target Number 13, hard). On failure, a "drawing-in attempt" triggers
3. drawing-in attemptthe PC's Mental Save (Target Number 15, very hard). On failure, the PC begins to be drawn into the procession
4. rescue possibilityanother PC casts Energy 5 + a Target Number 17 mental rite to pull them out (must be attempted within 1 breath to succeed)
5. failure cushion — rescue after Spirit Realm abductionthe drawn-in PC is not killed instantly but abducted into the Spirit Realm. In a later scenario, another PC squad runs a rescue scenario (1~2 sessions)

#Seed 3 — "The Tsuchigumo of the Mountain Village"

#Trigger

A giant spider appears in a mountain village. The villagers vanish one after another. A PC squad that has gone deep into the mountain forest — discovers a large cave filled with spider-webs.

#Conjecture

A variant tsuchigumo of fc04-04-02-tsuchigumo-rashomon.md. See the fc04 main-text sheet.

#PC Role

Subjugation. Coping with both the spider-webs and the venom.

#Sheet Handling

Use the tsuchigumo sheet of fc04-04-02 as-is. It can be weakened one step in the form of a "remnant of the mountain village" (Wounds -1, etc.) — at the GM's discretion.

#Effect

EffectCategory
web bindingan Energy effect — PC Energy -1 (recovers next breath) + nullifies distance effects
venom strikea Wounds effect — PC Wounds -3 + an additional -1 next breath
the samurai PC's famed-blade striketsuchigumo Wounds -N

#Seed 4 — "The New Guest of Rashomon"

#Trigger

At Rashomon, once again a beautiful woman beckons — the same figure as in Tsuna's anecdote (60 years ago). At the capital's main gate near Shijo Bridge, the PC samurai PC meets her on a rainy night.

#Conjecture

A descendant of Ibaraki-doji? Or another shapeshifting yoma? "Has Ibaraki returned again?" is the scenario's mystery.

#PC Role

The Tsuna type — famed blade + resolve. Suspicion of the woman's identity, a strike.

#Sheet Handling

Use the Ibaraki sheet of fc04-04-02-tsuchigumo-rashomon.md as-is. Or weaken it one step as a "descendant of Ibaraki."

#Effect

EffectCategory
transformation effect (transforming into a beautiful woman)mental damage → PC's own evasion -3 (Defenseless against the next strike)
famed-blade strike (samurai PC)enemy Wounds -N (additional damage to yoma by the Higekiri effect)
Ibaraki's ambush strikePC Wounds -3

#Seed 5 — "Tengu Mountain"

#Trigger

The monk of a certain mountain temple has turned into a tengu. That monk warns the PCs in the mountains — "Leave my mountain." The testimony of the villagers below the mountain: that monk suddenly began to change a month ago.

#Conjecture

A corrupt monk turned into a tengu — the standard motif of the Heian tengu legend. A lust for power, arrogance, and the like made him a tengu.

#PC Role

  • shugenja PC — attempting a purification rite. Trying to return him to human.
  • onmyoji PC — blocking the tengu's flight with a Barrier.
  • samurai PC — the subjugation option. But the PCs face a "purification vs subjugation" moral choice.

#Sheet Handling

Use the tengu sheet of co-08-02-monster-templates.md, or part of the Tengushi class of co-04-07-28-villain-tengushi.md. This seed places no separate new sheet.

#The Moral Choice

  • purification — return him to human. But after returning to human, the possibility that he takes his own life over his sins (a scenario aftershock).
  • subjugation — kill him. But the possibility that his descendants or family become the PCs' enemy in a later scenario.
  • leaving it be — depart the mountain. But the possibility that he harms another mountain village.

All three choices carry a different aftershock — the model of a Heian moral choice.

#Seed 6 — "The Echo of the Sessho-seki"

#Trigger

In late Heian (after 1156), a traveler died in the field of Nasuno. Beside the corpse — the grass has all withered, and small birds have fallen. That spot is — near the Sessho-seki.

#Conjecture

The Sessho-seki after Tamamo-no-Mae's death. The model of the Sessho-seki's environmental effect of fc04-04-03-tamamonomae.md.

#PC Role

  • onmyoji PC — investigating the identity. A Barrier rite (permanent purification is impossible in this volume's era — deferred to the priest Genno of the Muromachi period).
  • shugenja PC — a talisman (a timed Barrier).
  • samurai PC — escort. Does not go near the Sessho-seki.

#Sheet Handling

EffectCategory
1 zone near the Sessho-sekieach breath, PC Wounds -1 (a Curse effect)
direct contact with the Sessho-sekiPC Wounds -3 instantly + a recovery penalty -1 (1 scenario)
the onmyoji's Barrier castingEnergy 5 + Target Number 17 (extreme). On success, nullifies the effect for PCs inside the Barrier for 1 breath
Barrier failurecaster Wounds -2

#Handling in This Volume's Era

In this volume (up to 1185), permanent purification is impossible. The PCs block the Curse with a temporary Barrier and depart — the Sessho-seki remains right there. Permanent purification is the work of the priest Genno of the Muromachi period.

#Seed 7 — "The Shugenja's Cave"

#Trigger

A certain shugenja, while meditating in a mountain cave — came back as a different person. His appearance is the same, but the look in his eyes and his manner of speech differ. A fellow shugenja who knows him informs the PCs.

#Conjecture

A yoma within the cave has possessed his soul. The original shugenja's soul — where has it gone?

#PC Role

  • onmyoji PC — a Possession-release rite. Barrier + purification.
  • shugenja PC — tracing the original shugenja's soul (through dreams and visions).
  • samurai PC — subduing the possessed shugenja (but not killing him — for the soul's recovery).

#Sheet Handling

StageSheet
before Possession (the original shugenja)the base-class shugenja sheet
after Possession (the possessed cave yoma)a separate NPC sheet — the possessing yoma's Energy / Wounds
the original shugenja's soultrapped within the cave. A separate "Incorporeal" — Energy / Wounds very low
after Possession-release (recovery)returns to the original shugenja sheet. But a recovery penalty of 1 scenario

#Effect

EffectCategory
the onmyoji PC's Possession-release riteEnergy 8 + Target Number 17 + a time-unit rest
rite failurecaster Wounds -3 (backlash) + the Possession strengthens (the next attempt Target Number 19, impossible)
the possessed shugenja's strikePC Wounds -2
the samurai PC's subdual (not killing)possessed shugenja Energy 0 (unable to act) — securing time for the rite

#Usage Guide

  • Each seed is 1~2 sessions in length. Do not make it a long arc.
  • Recommended squad: samurai + onmyoji + shugenja (3~5 members).
  • Minimize new sheets — prioritize the reuse of co and ex2. Use a separate sheet only for the truly necessary named figures.

#Combining Seeds

  • Seed 1 (The Remnant of Mt. Oe) → Seed 3 (The Tsuchigumo of the Mountain Village) → Seed 4 (The New Guest of Rashomon) = a Yorimitsu-descendant campaign (3 scenarios, late Heian).
  • Seed 5 (Tengu Mountain) → Seed 7 (The Shugenja's Cave) = a mountain religious-figure campaign (2 scenarios).
  • Seed 6 (The Echo of the Sessho-seki) = a one-shot scenario. Limited to late Heian (after 1156).

#In One Line

"The mountains are farther than the capital — but those who dwell within them are closer than the capital."
