#Conversion Design Notes (IP safety · setting integration · 0.9.4 consistency)
Contents
#§ 0. Settling This-Expansion 0.9.4 Consistency (mandatory compliance)
This expansion 55, from 4 onward, enforces 100% compliance with the core 08-02 yoma bestiary standard and this expansion's 00-05 own mechanics 0.9.3 settled rules.
#0-1. Enforcing the Core Standard Stat Block
Every converted yoma uses the core 08-02 §stat-block format format:
Name (kanji) — Grade
Wounds X, Defense Y, Energy Z (Mob/Minion/Veteran have no Energy / squad order)
Courage+a, Finesse+b, Physique+c
Techniques: <technique name>[Energy, effect] / <technique name>[Energy, effect] / <defense technique>[reservation/improvised]
Special: [name] — [effect]
Domination +N
6 attributes only: use only Courage·Finesse·Physique·Wisdom·Presence·Fate. Invented attributes (Spirit, Psychic, Thought, etc.) are forbidden.
Check formula: 2d10 + attribute + proficiency ≥ Defense (core 03-03). Abstract "attack +N" notation is forbidden.
#0-2. Applying the Domination Conversion Formula
Consistent with the core 08-02 §Domination conversion formula:
| Grade | Base Domination | When forming a squad |
|---|---|---|
| Mob | +0.5 | squad(3–5) +1 |
| Minion | +1 | squad(4–5) +2 |
| Veteran | +1 | squad(3–4) +3 |
| Elite | +4 | — |
| Lord | +1.5 + Presence aura | — |
#0-3. Damage Unit
Consistent with the core 00-05 §3. All damage a yoma inflicts on a PC is in Wounds units.
| Damage intensity | Current notation |
|---|---|
| Light direct damage | 1 Wounds |
| Strong direct damage | 2 Wounds |
| Wide-area strong damage | wide-area 2 Wounds |
Principle: damage notation in the form "Energy -N" lacks rule meaning (core Energy auto-recovers each round). All damage notation is unified as Wounds ±N.
#0-4. Recovery and Energy Aid
Consistent with the core 00-05 §3 Category A·B:
| Effect character | Current notation |
|---|---|
| Regeneration/trauma treatment | [upkeep] recover Wounds +1 (1 lull 1 time) |
| Direct recovery | [upkeep] recover Wounds +N |
| One-breath temporary extension | Energy aid B-1 |
| 0-count extra action | Energy aid B-2 |
Principle: core Energy is an action resource that returns to maximum automatically each round. Recovery/aid effects are handled as Wounds recovery or Energy aid according to their character.
#0-5. Multiattack → Cap of 2 per Round
Consistent with the core 03-04 §rule 3 + 00-05 §7:
| Conversion pattern | Application |
|---|---|
| A. Reduce to 2 per round | a solo Elite/Lord yoma (selecting and casting two techniques) |
| B. Dispersed Casting (00-05 §1) | a 5-headed Hydra, etc. (prepare in one round + trigger next round) |
| C. Squad-order conversion | depicting many enemies (conversion to squad units) |
D&D-original "3 attacks" or "5 heads at once" notation is forbidden.
#0-6. Non-corporeal · [Incorporeal] Attack Unification Rule
Mandatory application of the core 08-02 §Non-corporeal unification rule. All incorporeal yoma (zombie, wight, vampire, banshee, specter, yuan-gui, shi-hai, green-robe gui, night-gaunt, etc.):
Special: [Non-corporeal] — physical attacks negated on d10 1〜5 (50%). Exorcism Novice(1 point)+ exempt. `[Incorporeal]` attacks exempt. See [§Non-corporeal unification rule](../../co/co-08-gm-tools/co-08-02-monster-templates.md#비실체-통일-규칙).
For incorporeal attacks, the [Incorporeal] tag (§Defense/Pierce system) + §Exorcism exemption table link are mandatory.
#0-7. Critical Hit Notation
D&D-style Critical Hit notation ("1d10 = 9-10", "1d10 = 8-10") is forbidden. Use the core Critical Hit (2d10 double) or this expansion's 00-05 §15 Critical Expansion (adjacent faces 28%):
| Effect character | Current notation |
|---|---|
| Lethal additional effect | added on a Critical Hit (apply the core Critical Hit or §15 Critical Expansion) |
#0-8. Handling Outside Morale Effects
Consistent with the core 00-05 §12. The core defines only Cohesion (squad Cohesion). Morale is compatible only in the 1st campaign (domain morale) or when using the 30-03 variant:
| Effect character | Current notation |
|---|---|
| Squad shrinking | squad Cohesion -1 |
| Fear Aura | adjacent enemy squad Cohesion -1 |
#0-9. Stating the 30-10 Grimdark Dependency
Mechanical effects of madness, trauma, nightmare, mind shock, hallucination, and Fear depend on the 30-10 grimdark option or 30-03 variant B:
| Effect | Notation principle |
|---|---|
| Inflict madness | "madness when 30-10 or 30-03 variant B is used / otherwise GM-discretion narration" |
| Inflict trauma | "trauma when 30-10 grimdark is used / otherwise GM discretion" |
| Nightmare effect | "nightmare when 30-10 grimdark is used / otherwise GM-discretion narration" |
| Mind shock | "mechanical effect when 30-10 grimdark or 30-03 variant B is used / otherwise narration" |
Campaigns that do not use it handle these as GM-discretion narration (no mechanical effect).
#0-10. Guide to Avoiding Collisions with Same-Name Core Yoma
Avoiding collisions with names already listed in the core 08-02 bestiary:
| This-expansion name | Core same-name | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Nine-Tailed Fox (55-08) | core Nine-Tailed Fox (Lord-grade) | integrate into the core — removing this conversion recommended. If named separately, "Chinese Nine-Tailed Fox" |
| Nue (55-08) | core nue (Elite-grade) | integrate into the core — removing this conversion recommended. If named separately, "Shanhaijing Nue" |
| Gaki (55-09) | core gaki (Minion-grade) | integrate into the core — removing this conversion recommended |
Principles:
- Avoid using yoma names that already exist in the core bestiary.
- When naming separately, use a source/culture prefix ("Chinese", "Shanhaijing", "Tibetan").
- When integrating into the core, delete this conversion's material. Update the 99-04 integration index.
#0-11. Attack Bonus +5 or More · Instant Death Requires 2+ Limiting Conditions
Consistent with the core 00-05 §10. An attack +5 or more, or an instant-death effect, must simultaneously satisfy 2 or more of the following limiting conditions:
- Stance/waiting accumulation
- Designated target (prearranged, lifelong, ritual)
- User Energy -N (self-cost)
- Accompanied by an instant-death check
- Justification/environment limit (night, stealth, mounted, rugged terrain, plain)
- Critical-Hit-accompanied limit
This expansion's Red Dragon(+8), Blue Dragon(+7), Gold Dragon(+9), Archangel(+9), Guan Yu(+9), Dragon Kings of the Four Seas(+9), Basilisk instant death, Seraph instant death, green-robe gui instant death, etc., mandatorily add 2+ limiting conditions.
#§ 1. IP Safety Review
#Public Domain vs Media Origin
| Source | Public domain? | This-expansion handling |
|---|---|---|
| Greek myth | public domain | use original names (Hydra, Chimera, Aegis) |
| Celtic myth | public domain | use original names (Banshee, Leprechaun) |
| Norse myth | public domain | use original names (Beowulf, Gungnir) |
| Arthurian legend | public domain | use original names (Excalibur, Durendal) |
| Shanhaijing/Three Kingdoms | public domain | use original names (Guan Yu, etc.) — but avoid collision with core same-names (Nine-Tailed Fox, nue, gaki) §0-10 |
| Lovecraft 1928–1937 | entered public domain | use original names (Shoggoth, Dagon) |
| D&D generic humanoids (goblin, troll, dragon) | generalized/near public domain | use original names or alter |
| D&D-specific (Mind Flayer, Beholder) | media origin | alteration required (Brain-Eater, Many-Eyes) |
| Tolkien-specific (Balrog, Hobbit) | media origin | alter (Balrog → Balrog variant) |
| Manga media (specific characters) | media origin | alter + borrow motif only |
#Alteration Principles
- Name: kanji or Korean alteration (e.g., Mind Flayer → Brain-Eater).
- Appearance: borrow the motif only. Change the exact appearance description.
- Abilities: convert into the core technique format. Original abilities as-is is X.
- State the source: an academic-citation format such as "Original: D&D Mind Flayer".
#§ 2. Setting Integration
#Placing into the Core World
A converted monster, in the core world:
- Spirit Realm: fits the 1st-expansion Spirit Realm environment (a non-mundane being).
- Outer reaches/foreign lands: fictional outer reaches beyond Japan (West, China, Arabia, etc.).
- Ancient ruins: mountain ruins, tumuli, caves.
- Outer-reach trade: a Nanban merchant ship brings it in by chance.
- Fiend influence: appears in Japan through contact with the 12 Fiend Classes.
#Differentiation from Core Yoma
Clarifying differentiation from core Japanese yoma:
- Core: traditional Japanese yoma (tengu, kappa, oni, onryo, etc.) + common-name Eastern yoma (Nine-Tailed Fox, nue, gaki)
- This expansion 55: fictional outer-reach monsters (conversions). When colliding with a same-name core yoma, integration into the core takes priority (§0-10).
A PC may meet both core yoma and this expansion's converted yoma. Distinguish them by differences in weakness/efficacy.
#§ 3. Conversion Balance
#Avoiding Conversions That Are Too Strong
- Mapping a D&D 16+ HD monster directly to a core Lord-grade overwhelms core PCs.
- A GM-discretion -20% to the values is recommended (depending on campaign tone/PC count).
- Attack +5 or more · instant-death effects mandatorily apply the §0-11 2+ limiting conditions.
#Avoiding Conversions That Are Too Weak
- An HD 1 monster is basically a Mob. Rather than solo combat, run it as a squad of 5 Mobs, traps, terrain, and alongside a higher-grade commander.
- To use it as the center of a solo encounter, declare a Minion variant separately. In that case, also set Wounds 1 · Defense 11–13 · whether it is a squad-order target.
- Recognize that a Mob = Wounds 0, no techniques, squad decoration. Basic humanoids like goblins and kobolds are standard as Mob squads.
#Special-Ability Balance
- Mapping a powerful original-D&D special ability (e.g., Petrifying Gaze instant death) as-is overwhelms PCs.
- Transform it to fit the core rules (e.g., instant-death check + Critical Hit + 2+ limiting conditions — §0-11).
- Multiattack must obey the cap of 2 per round (§0-5).
#§ 4. Matching the Campaign Tone
#Horror Tone
- 55-12 the Cthulhu series fits.
- The 30-10 grimdark variation is recommended (activates the madness/nightmare/trauma mechanics).
- §0-9 stating the 30-10 dependency is mandatory.
#Cinematic Tone
- 55-04 magical beasts/creatures (Pegasus, Unicorn) fit.
- The 30-11 heroic tone is recommended.
#Simulation Tone
- 55-02 Western basics (goblin, orc) fit.
- The 30-12 d10 stabilization modifier is recommended.
#§ 5. PC Prior Consent
- Horror-tone conversions: prior PC consent (introducing madness/trauma — §0-9 30-10 dependency).
- Heretical-thought conversions: possible conflict with PC faith/thought (e.g., a Catholic demon/devil).
- IP-safety conversions: all PCs are aware of the altered names (especially altered-name conversions).
