#Heian Yawa (平安夜話)

Contents

Tales of the Heian Night cover

Campaign Module + Scene Tool + Reference blend. This volume covers the figures, yoma, Onmyodo, and scenarios set against the Heian era. The sheets and the Onmyodo additional spells are fc04's internal campaign module; the samurai variant rules and the spirit-realm model are optional scene tools; the narrative and historical commentary are reference material. Where it conflicts with co·ex2 Canon, the main volumes take priority.

Onmyodo spell-use label: The Seimei-school and Doman-school spells are permitted only in campaigns that use the ex2 spell structure. A table that does not use ex2 uses only the co onmyoji class abilities, and does not open the fc04 spell tables as independent spell slots.

#Opening Words

Heian's four hundred years — from the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo in 794 to the fall of the Heike at Dan-no-ura in 1185. It was the longest age of peace in Japanese history, and the age in which nearly every archetype of the Japanese yoma tale was forged.

The Hyakki Yako crossed the Shijo bridge, and Shuten-doji drank sake on Oe-yama. The jealousy of one consort killed another; the resentment of one scholar dropped lightning upon a city. There lived an onmyoji who purified the dark with a single mantra, and in that same era there also lived an onmyoji who commanded the dark to kill people.

This volume covers the five people who lived within those four hundred years, the three yoma they encountered, and the two Onmyodo (陰陽道) they refined. At the end it places two kinds of scenario seeds — in the court, and in the mountains.

#Opening Fragment — The Closed Folding Screen

Behind the folding screen, someone laughed. None of the nobles in the room turned to look. For the moment one turned, one would have to decide whether it was a person or a ghost.

A young lady-in-waiting halted, an incense box in her hands. "Just now... did you hear it?"

The master closed his fan. "I did not hear it. In this room there are also sounds for which not hearing is the courtesy."

But the onmyoji was different. He sat before the folding screen and folded a single talisman. "The sound one may pass over with courtesy and the sound that takes a person away if passed over are not the same."

The laughter beyond the screen drew a little closer. The noble still faced only forward, the lady-in-waiting bowed her head, and the onmyoji calculated the hour of the stars. No one drew a blade. The Heian night begins in just this way. Within an elegant room, the first thing to move is always the shadow.

#One-Line Description

"Under one roof, humans and yoma lived together. The name of that roof is Heian."

This volume presents a model different from the Sengoku era (fc02), where the gate of the spirit realm was thrown wide open. Heian's spirit realm is not closed, yet not wide open either. Here and there are faded gates, and humans and yoma walk the same roads. They simply do not look.

#The Three Faces of This Volume

#1. Figures — The Five Faces of Heian

  • Abe no Seimei (921~1005) — the pinnacle of Onmyodo
  • Minamoto no Yorimitsu + the Shitenno (10th–11th centuries) — the squad of the Shuten-doji subjugation
  • Sugawara no Michizane (845~903) — a scholar's tragedy, the posthumous Tenman-Tenjin
  • Murasaki Shikibu (c. 970 ~ c. 1019) — the author of The Tale of Genji
  • Taira no Kiyomori (1118~1181) — the pinnacle of the Heike, the heart of Heian's final act

#2. Yoma — Three Great Incidents

  • Shuten-doji (the Oe-yama subjugation tale)
  • Tsuchigumo and the oni of Rashomon (the two episodes of Yorimitsu and Tsuna)
  • Tamamo-no-Mae (the India–China–Japan 9-tailed white fox)

#3. Mechanics — The Two Onmyodo and Their Surroundings

  • Seimei school (orthodox) / Doman school (heterodox) — additional spells from 1st to 10th dan
  • Yabusame samurai — the Heian warrior variant rule (centered on bow, horse, single combat)
  • Kuge PC Guide — scholar, onmyoji, feng shui master, and performer builds
  • 33-Class Heian Application Guide — the era-fit of the entire co class roster
  • Heian spirit-realm model — the "faded gates here and there" that differs from Sengoku's "wide open"

#Volume — Manifest Exception

This volume, at 25 documents, exceeds the ≤ 20 .md ceiling of the fc spec (co-99-03-fc-spec.md). This volume recognizes it as a manifest exception and maintains 25 documents as the canonical volume.

#Grounds for the Exception

GroundsContent
The richness of Heian's four hundred years5 figures + 3 yoma incidents + two Onmyodo schools (each with 1st–10th dan additional spells) + two scenario bundles (court and mountain, 7 each) — the minimum unit to condense into one volume
The two axes of era colorIntegrating the scenario seeds of the two domains, court and mountain, would mix the branching of moral choice with the tone of investigation and subjugation, losing readability
The operational discretion of the specThe fc spec sets automatic provisions, but per-volume explicit exception recognition is the discretion of the spec operator. This volume puts the exception in plain writing at the front of the index, avoiding the automatic provision

This volume's 25 documents are an intended volume, and remain compatible with the "compact" identity of the fc series spec.

#Additional Connections

VolumeConnection point
fc05Reference when reinforcing the famed blades of the Genji and Heike, the warriors of the Tenka Goken, and the relationship of master and weapon.
fc08Reference when treating the Hyakki Yako, Shuten-doji, Tamamo-no-Mae, and Heian-archetype yoma as era variants.
ex3Reference when comparing how Heian's yoma tales transform into Edo ghost stories and the Hundred-Tale Society.

#One-Line Invitation

"It was an elegant age. Its shadow, too, was elegant."

Seimei departed, Michizane departed, Shikibu too departed — yet their shadows still walk the streets of Kyoto. To walk those streets together, one opens this volume.

The Heian night does not end — even after the lamp goes out, the shadow reads on.
